Musee des Lepidopteres. Collection de papillons de toutes les parties du monde.

. Paris, [ca. 1840]. Folio (42 x 30 cm). Gilt-lettered title page, 12 chromolithographed plates with captions, finished by hand, some heightened with silver and gum arabic. Contemporary style red half cloth over marbled, gilt-bordered boards with gilt title on the spine. Contained in a recent red cloth clamshell box with original rich gilt embossed cloth mounted on the front.* An unrecorded and very important publication on the larger and most colourful butterflies of the world with very fine, detailed, and beautiful images of Macrolepidoptera with many new, available names and quite possibly including several that are the valid names of the species figured. This publication is not recorded by any bibliographer, such as Brunet, Hagen, Horn-Schenkling, and Junk, nor can it be found in any library on the planet, thus of cosmic rarity. Which is very peculiar because the images are very well excecuted, accurate and certainly with scientific merit. It was apparently published, or to be published, by the author, Jean Delarue, an accomplished bird painter. He contributed to Alcide d'Orbigny's "Galerie ornithologique", published between 1836-1839 (vide Sitwell), and at least two other very rare bird books, namely "Etudes d'animaux dans le paysage"; "Oiseaux d'Europe" and at least one big and important work on entomology "Histoire naturelle des lepidopteres ou papillons de France" by Godart, J. and P. Duponchel. Delarue was a highly gifted artist in natural sciences about whom little seems to be known. He was responsible for 30 superb plates in Alcide d'Orbigny's Galerie Ornithologique (1836-1839), for many insect plates in Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionaire Universel (1849), and also, according to Ronsil (p.69) in his "L'Art Francais.."(1958) for the four plates in John Kirk Townsend's aborted and mythically rare "Ornithology of the United States of North America" (1839), sometimes mistakenly attributed to "Delorme". In describing this and the similarly formatted work by Delarue and de Vresse, "Oiseaux d'Europe", Ronsil remarks (p. 69) in "L'Art Francais": Soigneusement colories au pinceau a lepoque, la plupart de ces lithographies constituent de delicieuses petite estampes d'une extreme delicatesse.." Mrs. Jackson, in her "Dictionary of Bird Artists of the World" (1999) tells us (p. 220) that Jean Delarue was the name of both a father and son who specialized in various aspects of natural history depiction." (Richard L. Soffer, in Amherst.edu). Regarding the Jackson quote, Benezit lists two Jean Delarue's; however, one is from the 16th century. After a few plates were printed by Delarue, it must have been handed over to another more experienced publisher, namely Arnauld de Vresse, who in turn must have done little to distribute the work although half the plates and the gilt-lettered title page were printed on his behalf. The butterflies depicted have been named according to the Linnaean binominal system the localities for each are given. We have never seen or heard of this work in all the years we have been dealing in rare books. It definitely deserves the attention of one or several specialist lepidopterologists, if only to discover exactly how important this unknown book is and exactly where it stands in the history of entomological science. Some few plates a bit spotted, but in all, a very good copy. Bezenit 3, p. 144; Ronsil, Bibl. Ornith. Fr. 780; Ronsil l'Art Francais, p. 69; Sitwell, p. 92..

Verso of front free endpaper with engraved bookplate of Alfred Henry Wiggin, front flyleaf with engraved bookplate of [Lynde] Selden (both loose, and with a circular glue stain from a fugitive bookplate). A CHOICE COPY, the binding lustrous and unworn, and the clean, fresh text with no signs of use. This item features the work of a major 18th century English poet, a leading 19th century English printer, and a sumptuous binding by a prominent 20th century English workshop. Although he was primarily a scholar, and although he never became a professional or even a dedicated poet, Gray (1716-71) was offered the laureateship in 1757, upon the death of Colley Cibber (he refused the honor). Gray had begun to write poetry as early as 1742, but it was not until 15 years later, after the publication of his "Works," that he had become generally recognized as the foremost poet of the day. In his highly polished verse, one can easily trace the decay of Neoclassical and the development of Romantic strains in English poetry. In 1828 Pickering began to use the familiar anchor and dolphin device employed by the Aldus family of Venetian printers in the 16th century, and he had the same purpose behind his work as did his Aldine predecessors--to provide the public with well printed texts that were nevertheless obtainable even by a person of modest means. As part of this effort, in 1830 Pickering began publishing his famous "Aldine Poets" series, a project that, with reissues, covered more than 20 years and involved the production of 53 volumes, each carefully edited by one of a group of reputable scholars. The present volume is part of that series. The so-called "Cosway" binding, with one or more painted miniatures inlaid in handsome morocco, has traditionally been thought to originate with the London bookselling firm of Henry Sotheran about 1909, the year G. C. Williamson's book entitled "Richard Cosway" (dealing with the British miniature painter, Richard Cosway,1742-1821) was remaindered by Sotheran and presumably given this special and, in this case very appropriate, decorative treatment. The name "Cosway" has subsequently been used to describe any book so treated, whoever its author and whatever its subject. Such bindings were a specialty of Sangorski & Sutcliffe, one of the two or three preeminent workshops operating in London during the last century.

        Tower of London, The

Richard Bentley London 1840 - First Edition, Near Fine/ No Jacket as Issued, Full-Leather. This exquisite volume was published by Richard Bentley in 1840, around the time that he was working with Dickens. Bentley also published the first edition of Oliver Twist. This volume is illustrated by George Cruikshank, the genius of 19th century literary illustrations. There are 40 full-page steel etchings as well as 58 woodcut illustrations. It is beautifully bound by Riviere in full red straight-grained morocco with green silk endpapers. The spine is very richly gilt in an ornate six compartment design with raised hubs. There is a little splitting of the silk at the inner joints but they are still quite solid. All edges are gilt and there is virtually no foxing to the fine textblock, even on the plates. The binding is tight and there is a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. The bookplate depicts a fellow sitting in his reading chair before a fireplace. There is gold decoration on the inner dentelles and this is a very handsome copy of this important volume. The book is in a beautiful custom-made slipcase of the finest leather and the inside of the slipcase is fully lined in a marbelled red. A mylar wrapper further protects the book within the case. In size, the book is a tall octavo and it is quite heavy. The novel itself is a work of fictionalized history and takes place in sixteenth century England. This writing format holds a twofold interest for the reader. Firstly, it tells a Romantic story and secondly, it tells a story that is partly true. The Tower of London also brings to the reader a lively description of one of the most famous structures in England. The story itself is concerned with the troubled reign of Queen Mary, one of the least understood by lovers of history and literature. This beautiful offering in it's Fine binding looks stunning on the shelf and will please any discriminating collector of Fine literature. We are pleased to send pictures on request.         Operations Carried on at the Pyramids of Gizeh in 1837: with an account of a voyage into Upper Egypt

James Fraser, London 1840 - Description: 3 volumes. xx+292+[errata] pages with frontispiece, fold out site map, and 30 additional plates (many folding); x+368+[errata] pages with frontispiece and 27 additional plates (many folding); xii+148 with frontispiece, 25 maps and views (many fold out), 49 plates (many folding) this volume is the index. Quarto (11 1/2" x 7 1/2") bound in latter green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. First edition. At Giza Richard Vyse and John Shae Perring worked with gunpowder forcing their way into several monuments, including the burial chamber of the pyramid of Menkaure. Vyse's gunpowder archaeology made one highly notable discovery in the Great Pyramid of Giza. Giovanni Battista Caviglia had blasted on the south side of the stress-relieving chamber (Davison's chamber) on top of the King's chamber, a chamber discovered by Nathaniel Davison in 1765, hoping to find a link to the southern air channel. But while Caviglia gave up, Vyse suspected that there was another chamber on top of Davison's chamber, since he could thrust a yard long reed though a crack up into a cavity. He therefore blasted straight up on the northern side, over three and a half months, finding four additional chambers. Vyse named these chambers after important friends and colleagues; Wellington's chamber (Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington), Nelson's chamber (Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson), Lady Arbuthnot's chamber (Anne Fitzgerald, wife of Sir Robert Keith Arbuthnot, 2nd Baronet) and Campbell's chamber (Patrick Campbell, the British agent and Consul General in Egypt). Just as amazing as the chambers were Vyse's discovery of numerous graffiti in the chambers, in red paint, dating from the time the pyramids were built. Along with lines, markers and directional notations were work gangs names, including cartouches of several pharaohs, concentrated in Lady Arbuthnot's and Nelson's chamber, but all four chambers contained graffiti. The previously discovered Davison's chamber contained no graffiti. The now famous single instance of Pharaoh Khufu's name, compounded in a work gang inscription is found on the south ceiling towards the west end of Campbell's chamber. Today this chamber also contains a fair amount of 19th and 20th century graffiti. The other similar famous "Khnum-Khuf", also part of work gang graffiti, is found in Lady Arbuthnot's chamber. Several other compound cartouches can be found in this chamber. Condition: Small perforated letter "SCL" on titles, rebound in modern green cloth, volume two has not been read with many of the pages still attached, slight bump at heal edge else a very nice set.         The Picture Alphabet

Houndsditch: Bishop & Co., circa, 1840. Duodecimo, 12 pp. in total, woodcut illustrations throughout; a charming copy in the original green printed wrappers, just lightly chipped at head of front, folded (not sewn) as issued. A delightful Alphabet, fully illustrated throughout in woodcut. Here are many favourites - the Fox, the Goose, and the Lamb - but where necessary, the publisher's evidently felt capable of stretching their young audience. Not only is K for Kangaroo, but there are more unusual inclusions such as I for Ibex, and even M for Mermaid. Sadly, inspiration only went so far; here, X is for the Letter X. The work also includes a child's ditty, slightly clipped in the original printing: "When school is done, g[o] home loiter not on the wa[y] / Come to school clean and play not by the way."

Two Unsigned Watercolour Views: Mindelo, St. Vincent - Washington's Head, St. Vincent [Cape Verde Islands].

1840 - Ca. 1840. Watercolours each ca. 16x34 cm (6 ½ x 13 in). Recently matted in one mat, watercolours in near fine condition. The two well executed watercolours show: 1) Mindelo with its harbour and several boats and ships; 2) Washington's Head with a ship and launch with sailors diving and swimming in the foreground. St. Vincent (São Vicente) "was discovered on Saint Vincent's Day (January 22) in 1462. Due to its lack of water, the island was initially used only as a cattle pasture by some proprietors of the neighboring island of Santo Antão. The island remained practically uninhabited until the middle of the 19th century. It was only in 1838, when a coal deposit was established in Porto Grande to supply ships on Atlantic routes, that the population started to grow rapidly. Due to the lack of rain and consequent lack of natural resources, the economy of São Vicente is based mainly on commerce and services.,Because of its excellent harbour, Mindelo (on the island of São Vicente) became an important commercial centre during the 19th century" (Wikipedia).

The King of Oude, his Brother, and Attendants. Sketched while of their Visit to England, by a Lady.

London: Ackermann and Co., [1840] - Small octavo (179 × 142 mm) Original red cloth, elaborate panel in blind, title in gilt to upper board, neatly rebacked in burgundy morocco with title longitudinally in gilt. Boards a little rubbed, some ink spatter to the upper board and worm traces to both boards, short split to title page, archivally repaired, mild, scattered spotting, occasional bleed from the colouring onto the guards, one plate with minor adhesion to the gum-arabic, about very good. 8 lithographic plates, hand-coloured and heightened in gum arabic. First and only edition. Extremely uncommon: BL copy only on COPAC and OCLC; not in Abbey. The plates, which are signed in the stone "HJ", were the work of "a lady, then an invalid" who was "staying in the same hotel in London in which the Prince had taken his residence." She "endeavoured to draw the different costumes with as much accuracy as the transient glances she could obtain of the individuals when passing up and down stairs, or moving to or from their apartments, would permit." The profits from the work were to be given to the Consumption Hospital, Brompton. Iqbal al-Daula Muhsin 'Ali Khan was the son of Shams al-Daula Ahmad 'Ali Khan and grandson of Sa'adat 'Ali Khan, Nawab of Lucknow, 1798-1814. He visited England in 1838 to put forward his claim to the throne of Oudh. The presence of this exotic entourage stirred considerable interest, and the strangely "snatched", paparazzi-like quality of these drawings (the interpreter is shown from behind, and several images show figures on the stairway) seems entirely in keeping. Having failed to persuade the government to reverse the ruling against him, he spent the rest of his life in Turkish Arabia, being a familiar figure in Baghdad. He published his memoirs under the title Iqbal-i-Farang, died in 1887. An attractive, highly allusive, and elusive piece of Victorian Orientalism. [Attributes: First Edition]
