Lyon, Vue Prise de la Guillotiere / Vista Tomada desde la Guillotiere

      V. Turgis, editeur, 10 rue Serpente, Paris 1840 - A picturesque view of Lyon from the Guillotiere after a drawing by the celebrated French painter Nicolas-Marie Joseph Chapuy. Chapuy has chosen to depict Lyon from the Guillotiere neighborhood, with the winding river running through the middle of the image. The docks next to the bridge are scattered with large stones and lumber and many small boats are moored along the banks. The bridge is crowded with pedestrians who make their way across the busy thoroughfare. Domes and spires crowd the horizon, and two large boats hurry down the river. This sweeping view is a wonderful example of Chapuy's considerable talents and picturesque eye, and a beautiful glimpse of Lyon in the early decades of the nineteenth century. Nicolas-Marie Joseph Chapuy was born in Paris in 1790 and in his early life became an officer in the Navy. An accomplished architect and landscape painter, Chapuy is perhaps best known for his stunning lithographs. He exhibited regularly at the Salon and in 1833 won a third class medal for his lithography. He produced a wide array of lithographs which varied in subject from historical scenes to architectural views. Yet it was his landscape prints which received the most praise and garnered him his celebrated reputation. This impressive view of Lyon is a fantastic example of Chapuy's talents. The image includes a numbered key at the bottom of the sheet which lists all the principal buildings and monuments in the image and provides their exact location. Benezit. Dictionnaire Critique et Documentaire Des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs, Vol. 3, p. 487. Tinted lithograph with original hand colouring. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition. Image size: 12 3/8 x 17 5/8 inches.

London: House of Commons, 3 August, 1840. Folio, 207 pp., dusted and a little marked; in the original blue printed wrappers, torn with small loss to front, spine worn away revealing the gathers; good original condition. An important report in good original condition: "valuable and historical" (Hocken). Regarding this now rather scarce report, Hocken wrote: "Prompted and promoted by the New Zealand Company, an influential meeting of merchants, bankers, shipowners, and others was held at the Guildhall on 15th April, 1840, to petition Parliament in favour of a systematic colonisation of New Zealand and to preserve it to the Crown… This report was the outcome, and was favourable. The witnesses were E.G. Wakefield, Saxe Bannister, John Blackett, R.N., John Ward, Dandeson Coates, Rev. Drs. Hinds and Beecham, Charles Enderby, W. Hutt, and Alex. Busby. Their evidence gives and account of the natives and their lands, mission labours, origin and history of the New Zealand Company, and the necessity for government and regulated colonisation."

The Amistad: an Arresting Engraving of the Revolt

1840 - Broadside Print, Death of Capt. Ferrer, the Captain of the Amistad, July, 1839. Original hand coloring. Originally appeared with an 1840 New Haven Pamphlet, A History of the Amistad Captives. Also An Account of the Trials. The caption reads: "Don Jose Ruiz and Don Pedro Montez, of the Island of Cuba, having purchased fifty-three slaves at Havana, recently imported from Africa, put them on board the Amistad, Capt. Ferrer, in order to transport them to Principe, another port on the Island of Cuba. After being out from Havana about four days, the African captives on board, in order to obtain their freedom, and return to Africa, armed themselves with cane knives, and rose upon the Captain and crew of the vessel. Capt. Ferrer and the cook of the vessel were killed; two of the crew escaped; Ruiz and Montez were made prisoners."On July 2, 1839, slaves aboard the Spanish schooner Amistad staged a revolt off the coast of Cuba, killing Captain Ramon Ferrer and the ship's cook. They were taken into custody by the United States' Navy near Long Island on August 26 and brought to Connecticut. Charges were filed alleging mutiny and murder, but the Circuit Court ruled that it lacked jurisdiction because the mutiny had occurred on a Spanish ship in Spanish waters. Various parties then filed property claims to the slaves, and the Spanish government asked that the ship, cargo and slaves be restored to Spain under the Pinckney Treaty of 1795.In 1840, a federal trial found that the initial transport (not involving the Amistad) of the Africans across the Atlantic had been illegal and that they were not legally slaves but free. The U.S. Supreme Court [case 40 U.S. (15 Pet.) 215] affirmed this finding on March 9, 1841, and the men were returned to Africa in 1842.

London: sold by John Weale, [n.d., 1840]. - 4to, pp. [2] + 31 engraved plates; a crisp clean copy in contemporary quarter niger and paste boards, spine lettered gilt, skilfully rebacked, extremities rubbed Only 1 copy recorded in OCLC (New York Public Library); see Fleming and Honour, The Penguin Dictionary of Decorative Arts, pp. 418-419 The designs are not in fact by Chippendale as the title suggests, but are the work of Thomas Johnson , later restrikes, with Johnson’s signature removed and Chippendale’s added (of the 31 plates, 19 are signed "T. Chippendale del. "). The designs are mostly in Johnson’s exuberant rococo style, with sharp, spiky decoration, interspersed with chinoiserie and "gothick" motifs.Thomas Johnson (1714-c.1778), English Rococo furniture maker and designer was born in London and established himself as an independent craftsman by the later 1740s. "All the furnishings for which Johnson published design are of a type known at the time as ‘carvers’ pieces’. They include no case-furniture or seat-furniture. They are limited to such objects as girandoles, mirror frames, side- or console-tables, candle-stands, etc., all pieces which are decorative rather than useful and allow scope for the carver’s fantasy. Stylistically they owe much to France" (Fleming and Honour).

Texas in 1840, or the Emigrant's Guide to the New Republic; Being the Result of Observation, Enquiry and Travel in That Beautiful Country. By an Emigrant, Late Of the United States

New York: William W. Allen, 1840. 12mo., (7 4/8 x 5 inches). Lithographed frontispiece with original hand-colour "City of Austin the New Capital of Texas in January 1. 1840" by J. Lowe after Edward Hall (first and last leaves stained, some occasionally heavy staining throughout). Original blue cloth, covers decorated in blind, spine lettered and decorated in gilt (extremities worn with minor loss, stained, bookplate removed from front pate-down). First edition, with William Cullen Bryant's poem "Prairies of Texas" at the end, and the EARLIEST FIRST-HAND BIRD'S-EYE VIEW OF AUSTIN, and thus by default a very early view of Texas, and an early bird's-eye view of any town in the West. The accompanying description of Austin is one of the most extensive of the period, and contains chapters describing all aspects of life in the state, with accounts of the geological, zoological, and botanical aspects too. The supposed author, Rev. A. B. Lawrence, was editor of the New Orleans Presbyterian, and pages 29-80 of this volume reflect his diary which he kept of his journey from Galveston to Austin via Houston, Washington-on-the-Brazos, Rutersville, La Grange, and Bastrop. There is a long interview with Gen. Edward Burleson, who mounted many campaigns against Texas tribes in the outlying. Chapter 9 contains discussion of how simple it is raise cattle herds in Texas and states that cattle left running wild will increase on their own, "doubling their number every three or four years" (page 131). Subsequent issues of the book came out in 1842, 1844, and 1845 (Streeter 1361A-C), but the print of Austin appears in only two versions, the later version redrawn, uncolored, and probably an engraving. Dr. Kelsey (Engraved Prints of Texas 1554-1900, figure 361) includes the redrawn print in his survey.         Design for a locomotive, circa 1840

      - An early locomotive such as the one in the present watercolour, was also known as a 'Portable Engine', and was used mostly by farmers for agricultural tasks such as ploughing and threshing. The difference between a Portable Engine and a so-called 'Traction Engine' is that the latter is self-propelled. From the 1850s and 1860s onwards the Traction Engine replaced the Portable Engine for many jobs, but there were still instances where the simplicity and efficiency of the older design won out, and they were built up until the 1960s. "Apart from threshing work, portable engines were used to drive corn-mills, centrifugal pumps, stone-crushers, dynamos, chaff-cutters and hay-balers. They were even used to generate electricity for floodlighting at football matches, the first instance being at Bramall Lane, Sheffield in 1878. In general, the portable engine is hauled to the work area, often a farmyard or field, and a long drive belt is fitted between the engine's flywheel and the driving wheel of the equipment to be powered. In a number of cases, rather than being towed from site-to-site, the portable engine was semi-permanently installed in a building as a stationary steam engine, although the wheels were not necessarily removed. A more extreme use occurs where the engine is removed from the boiler and is re-used as a stationary engine. Often, the boiler is also re-used (without its wheels) to provide the steam. As of 2007, there are still examples of such dismantled portable engines working commercially in small rice mills in Burma." (wikipedia). Pen and grey ink, signed 'John Haveron' (upper left). Wove paper, watermark 'J Whatman'. Sheet size: 14 7/8 x 20 inches. Provenance: E.S.K. (perforated ownership stamp at lower left).
