Small lacuna in address leaf where seal was broken (not affecting text), a few pin-holes, 19th-cent. printed biographical notice of Herschel tipped to top margin.</p><p>Herschel&#39;s letter to his fellow astronomer Francis Baily refuses an invitation and alludes to his own astronomical work:</p><p>My hands are so full that I find it impracticable to come up either tomorrow or Friday so that I must with many thanks & reluctantly deny myself the pleasure of being your guest.</p><p>I have no means of pointing my telescope on the comet&#39;s place-and I have no telescope to point.</p><p>Believe me, my dear sir, yours very truly, J. Herschel.</p><p>The comet mentioned in Herschel&#39;s letter might have been Comet C/1840 B1, discovered by Johann Gottfried Galle (1812-1910) in January 1840.</p><p>Herschel was one of the most important men of science of the Victorian era, making significant contributions to astronomy, mathematics, chemistry and photography. He was the author of Results of Astronomical Observations made at the Cape of Good Hope (1847), a survey of the stars of the Southern Hemisphere, in which he proposed the names still used today for the seven then-known satellites of Saturn. A few years later, he gave the four then-known satellites of Uranus their present names. He is also famous for having coined the term "photography" and for applying the terms "positive" and "negative" to photography. Francis Baily, whom Herschel had known since his student days at Cambridge, is best known for his description of "Baily&#39;s Beads," an optical phenomenon seen during solar eclipses. Baily was a founder of the Royal Astronomical Society. Dictionary of Scientific Biography. </p>

Voyages of the Dutch Brig of War Dourga, Through the Southern and Little-Known Parts of the Moluccan Archipelago, and along the previously unknown southern coast of New Guinea, Performed during the years 1825 & 1826

James Madden and Co, London 1840 - Octavo, two maps; moderate offsetting affects the title-page, otherwise a very nice copy in nineteenth century polished full black calf (joints expertly repaired retaining original backstrip). Tribal cultures of the Moluccas. A last gasp of Dutch interest in the seas off the northern coast of Australia, translated and published by George Windsor Earl, (?1813-1865) an important figure in the repeated attempts to settle the north coasts of Australia. Kolff's book includes two good maps of coastal Australia and the islands to the north. 'In 1824 small British settlements were formed at Melville Island and at Raffles Bay, with the object of opening up trade with the Arru (Aroe) Islands. The vessels which went out with this object in view were seized by the natives and their crews massacred. The Dutch government then decided to investigate the locality, resulting in this voyage. Kolff wrote of explorations made in the Molucca and Java Seas to Timor, the Serawatti Islands, Lakor Island, the Arru Islands, the Tanimbar Islands, and New Guinea. The first edition, in Dutch, was published in 1828' (Hill). Although written with the expected reservations of a Dutch naval officer, Kolff's account nonetheless describes indigenous island cultures of the Moluccas in some detail, recording life-world's now long since past.         Ischoha-Kakoschochata, Vig. XXV (Dance of the Mandan Indians)

London, published by Ackerman & Co. 1840 - Karl Bodmer illustrated plate from "Travels in the Interior of North America Paris", 1832-1843 Hand-colored aquatint engraving Paper size 12 1/2" x 18&#148;. Framed Karl Bodmer was a little-known Swiss painter when he was chosen by Prince Maximilian of Prussia to accompany his voyage to America, in order to document in pictorial terms the expedition. With the rest of Maximilian&#146;s company, the two traveled among the Plains Indians from 1832 to 1834, a time when the Plains and the Rockies were still virtually unknown. They arrived in the West before acculturation had begun to change the lives of the Indians, and Bodmer, who was a protegé of the great naturalist von Humbolt, brought a trained ethnologist&#146;s eye to the task. The Bodmer/Maximilian collaboration produced a record of their expedition that is incontestably the finest early graphic study of the Plains tribes. Maximilian and Bodmer journeyed from St. Louis up the Missouri River on the American Fur Company steamboat &#147;Yellowstone,&#148; stopping at a series of forts built by the Fur Company and meeting their first Indians at Bellevue. The travelers continued on another steamboat, &#147;Assiniboin,&#148; to Fort Union, where they met the Crees and Assiniboins. The expedition spent its first winter at Fort Clark, where the Mandans in particular excited Bodmer&#146;s attention, although he was also to draw the Minatarri and Crow peoples. The explorers continued by keelboat to Fort Mackenzie, which proved to be the westernmost point of their journey. After living among and studying the Blackfeet for several weeks, Maximilian decided that it was too dangerous to continue, so the travelers returned southward, reaching St. Louis in May 1834. After the conclusion of the journey, Bodmer spent four years in Paris supervising the production of the aquatints made from his drawings. These prints rank with the finest Western art in any medium, and they are the most complete record of the Plains Indians before the epidemics of the mid-19th century had decimated their numbers, and before the white man&#146;s expansion had taken their lands. In contrast to other artist-explorers of the 19th century, such as George Catlin, Bodmer was well-trained in the classic European tradition. The work that he did in America is considered to be the high point of a distinguished career. Perhaps more significant, the plates made from Bodmer's sketches were the first truly accurate images of the Plains Indians to reach the general public. Because the 1837 smallpox epidemic killed more than half the Blackfeet and almost all the Mandans, Bodmer&#146;s visually striking work, together with prince Maximilian&#146;s detailed studies of these tribes, form the primary accounts of what became virtually lost cultures. This hand-colored lithograph, &#147;Ischoha-Kakoschochata&#148; (Dance of the Mandan Indians) is in excellent condition and vividly shows this group of Native Americans performing a dance. The Mandan Indians are a tribe historically located along the banks of the Missouri River, where they were first encountered by Europeans in 1738. In the winter of 1804-1805 they met adventurers Lewis and Clark and had friendly relations with Europeans in the area. The vivid white of their headdresses are highlighted against the rich blue and black feathers. The men are shown in an intimate dance with other members of the tribe looking on.

Nauvoo, Il.: Printed by Robinson and Smith, Stereotyped by Shepard and Stearns...Cincinnati, Ohio, 1840.. [5],8-571,[2]pp. plus two preliminary blanks. 12mo. Contemporary sheep, neatly rebacked, original gilt spine laid down, green leather label. Small section at bottom of spine repaired. Corners lightly worn. Titlepage repaired in gutter. Internally clean, very good. Scarce third edition, first state, of THE BOOK OF MORMON, published by Ebenezer Robinson and Don Carlos Smith, younger brother of Joseph Smith. This work was actually printed in Cincinnati, despite the Nauvoo imprint. "By December 1839 the Book of Mormon was again out of print, and on the 29th the Nauvoo high council voted to publish a new edition under the supervision of the First Presidency as soon as funds could be raised" - Crawley. Robinson and Smith received permission from Joseph Smith to print 4,000 copies of the book, providing all the necessary funds themselves. The book was stereotyped and printed in Cincinnati, and is known to exist in three states, all printed from the same plates. The present copy is the first state, as described by Crawley, who notes that the second and third states may be later impressions struck off in Nauvoo. This edition contains a significant number of revisions and corrections from the 1837 Kirtland second edition. Joseph Smith moved the Church to Kirtland, Ohio in 1831, after founding the movement in Palmyra, New York the previous year. The Church was headquartered in Kirtland until 1838, when Smith relocated to Missouri, and shortly thereafter to the small town of Commerce, Illinois, which Smith re-christened "Nauvoo." It was there that Joseph Smith met his untimely end, in 1844, when he and his brother were killed by an angry mob of citizens from neighboring towns. The church remained centered in Nauvoo until 1846, when, amidst a growing sea of hostility, they fled west under the guidance of Brigham Young. FLAKE 597. CRAWLEY 83. HOWES S623, "aa." SABIN 83040.

[Germany. ca. ]. 1840 - [32] watercolors with individual text, each on paper panels measuring 5 1/4 x 4 inches, totaling about 132 inches all told. Modern brown linen case with decorative ribbon ties. Panel of watercolors attached to front board only at beginning of sequence. Each panel mounted on linen, with creases at each fold in an accordion-style binding. Each panel consists of a single watercolor of a cake or tort, with handwritten text below the image. Images fresh and lively, colors still strong. Inoffensive soiling (perhaps from closely observant baking practitioners?). In very good condition, housed in a linen clam- shell box with paper label on front board. A marvellous and enticing collection of thirty-two watercolors of cakes and tortes, presented together in a folding framework which, when extended, measures over eleven feet long. The individual desserts are presented in a naive, yet solid, style with each image accompanied by identifying and explanatory text. Certain words specific to Germany in the 1840s strongly suggest that these illustrations were utilized as something akin to a baker's catalogue, to be shown to customers who could then order specific items for particular occasions. Alternatively, the images may have been used a illustrations in a shop or window display to advertise the baker's skills. In addition to the expected chocolate cakes and apple and linzer tortes, are more curiously-named creations including a Brassilianer. A wonderful watercolor series advertising the baker's craft in mid-19th-century Germany.

The magazine was founded in 1787 by William Curtis and has continued publication to the present day. 'The reputation of the magazine has always resided in the accuracy of its portrayal of plants.' Curtis' principal artists were William Kilburn + James Sowerby and Sydenham T. Edwards. These skilled artists worked with him for 28 years and it was they who were responsible for most of the plates that appeared in the magazine. From October 1834 Walter Fitch became the main artist - a post that he would hold for 40 years. 'In the confident hands of a botanical artist like W.H. Fitch lithographs have an immediacy and spontaneity encountered usually only in original works of art.' Some very slight offsetting to some of the text and plates. Includes Plate 3723 which is very rare as it is one of the only plates in the magazine depicting a scene. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Pêcheurs Napolitains sur le Golfe de Naples

Veuve Turgis, Paris 1840 - Ferdinand Perrot (1808-1841) (artist and lithographer); Translation: Neapolitan Fishermen on the Gulf of Naples. Veuve Turgis, Paris: c. 1840; Hand-colored lithograph. View of the Bay of Naples with an assortment of boats traversing the choppy waters. In the foreground, five Neapolitan fishers go about their tasks in a boat filled with nets and baskets, apparently unperturbed as Mount Vesuvius spouts lava and a plume of ash in the background. Lit by early morning or late afternoon light, the composition is suffused with a delicate, luminous glow from the blue-green sea to the golden haze of the sky. This print was based on an 1839 painting by Ferdinand Perrot; he produced it as a lithograph in 1840. It is just one of many works Perrot made of maritime scenes in Naples. In 1838, a series of lithographs by Perrot was published under the title of Voyage sur les Côtes d'Italie de Nice à Naples [Voyage Along the Italian Coast, from Nice to Naples]. Indeed, in general Mt. Vesuvius on the Bay of Naples was a popular subject for paintings and prints from the days of the Grand Tour in the late 18th century. Such works were sometimes sold as souvenirs to tourists visiting Italy Ferdinand Perrot was French painter and lithographer, known for his landscapes and as one of the great French maritime painters of the 19th century. His talent was recognized early, and he completed his first commission, an Assumption of the Virgin, for a local church at the age of 15. He then moved to Paris to study with the maritime painter Jean Antoine Théodore Gudin, and exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1831 until 1844, which was three years after his death. Many of his paintings portray Brittany, the Loire region of France and Mediterranean coastline between the French Riviera and Naples. His works demonstrate a variety of moods and subjects, from peaceful harbors to storms at sea, also numerous depictions of naval battles and historical events such as the explorer Jacques Cartier discovering Canada. He was invited to St. Petersburg by the Russian royal family in 1840 and awarded a large commission of a series of topographical views of Russia and the coast of Finland and ten collections of prints. He also was made a member of the Academy of St. Petersburg. However, he died suddenly in 1841 at the age of 33, having completed only two of the commissioned series. Three views of St. Petersburg painted by Perrot are in the collection of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. Veuve Turgis, literally "Widow Turgis," was a print publisher in Paris run by Madame Turgis, widow of Louis Turgis. The firm was active from at least 1826 to 1864. Full publication information: Peint d'apres nature et lith. part Ferdinand Perrot. Paris V've. Turgis éditeur, 10 rue Serpente. Condition: Generally very good with the usual light toning, handling, and wear. Few old restorations of short tears verso. Overall with bright colors and attractive.

François Delarue, Paris 1840 - 546 x 413 mm (21 1/2 x 16 1/4"). Attractively matted. A LOVELY HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPH OF PINK AND YELLOW ROSES BY GROBON FRÈRES AFTER REDOUTÉ, the image with arched top, done on a thick piece of creamy-white stock, the flowers against a light gray background. A number of tiny, faint freckles of foxing to background, otherwise clean and bright, with strong, pleasing colors. This very charming work is based on the famous rose illustrations by Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), the Belgian painter and botanist known as the "Raphael of flowers." His talent was such that he weathered the turbulent political times and served as court painter both to Marie Antoinette and to Napoleon's empress, Josephine, for whom he immortalized the blossoms in her famous garden at Malmaison. The lithographers, François Frédéric Grobon (1815-1901/1902) and Anthelme Eugène Grobon (1820-78), were brothers trained in Lyon who produced several collections of botanical prints as well as a book of instruction, "Méthode Grobon frères, études progressives de Fleurs et de Fruits, depuis les premiers éléments jusqu' à la compostion des groupes" (1850), for aspiring artists. The delicate delineation and careful coloring give the roses here an extremely realistic, almost three-dimensional, quality--one is sure the drop of dew on the leaf will fall on one's hand. This print may have been part of the Redouté "Collection de Beaux Bouquets Lithographies" published by Delarue ca. 1845 and listed in "Great Flower Books" on page 131. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
