        Tower of London, The

Richard Bentley London 1840 - First Edition, Near Fine/ No Jacket as Issued, Full-Leather. This exquisite volume was published by Richard Bentley in 1840, around the time that he was working with Dickens. Bentley also published the first edition of Oliver Twist. This volume is illustrated by George Cruikshank, the genius of 19th century literary illustrations. There are 40 full-page steel etchings as well as 58 woodcut illustrations. It is beautifully bound by Riviere in full red straight-grained morocco with green silk endpapers. The spine is very richly gilt in an ornate six compartment design with raised hubs. There is a little splitting of the silk at the inner joints but they are still quite solid. All edges are gilt and there is virtually no foxing to the fine textblock, even on the plates. The binding is tight and there is a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. The bookplate depicts a fellow sitting in his reading chair before a fireplace. There is gold decoration on the inner dentelles and this is a very handsome copy of this important volume. The book is in a beautiful custom-made slipcase of the finest leather and the inside of the slipcase is fully lined in a marbelled red. A mylar wrapper further protects the book within the case. In size, the book is a tall octavo and it is quite heavy. The novel itself is a work of fictionalized history and takes place in sixteenth century England. This writing format holds a twofold interest for the reader. Firstly, it tells a Romantic story and secondly, it tells a story that is partly true. The Tower of London also brings to the reader a lively description of one of the most famous structures in England. The story itself is concerned with the troubled reign of Queen Mary, one of the least understood by lovers of history and literature. This beautiful offering in it's Fine binding looks stunning on the shelf and will please any discriminating collector of Fine literature. We are pleased to send pictures on request.         Operations Carried on at the Pyramids of Gizeh in 1837: with an account of a voyage into Upper Egypt

James Fraser, London 1840 - Description: 3 volumes. xx+292+[errata] pages with frontispiece, fold out site map, and 30 additional plates (many folding); x+368+[errata] pages with frontispiece and 27 additional plates (many folding); xii+148 with frontispiece, 25 maps and views (many fold out), 49 plates (many folding) this volume is the index. Quarto (11 1/2" x 7 1/2") bound in latter green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. First edition. At Giza Richard Vyse and John Shae Perring worked with gunpowder forcing their way into several monuments, including the burial chamber of the pyramid of Menkaure. Vyse's gunpowder archaeology made one highly notable discovery in the Great Pyramid of Giza. Giovanni Battista Caviglia had blasted on the south side of the stress-relieving chamber (Davison's chamber) on top of the King's chamber, a chamber discovered by Nathaniel Davison in 1765, hoping to find a link to the southern air channel. But while Caviglia gave up, Vyse suspected that there was another chamber on top of Davison's chamber, since he could thrust a yard long reed though a crack up into a cavity. He therefore blasted straight up on the northern side, over three and a half months, finding four additional chambers. Vyse named these chambers after important friends and colleagues; Wellington's chamber (Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington), Nelson's chamber (Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson), Lady Arbuthnot's chamber (Anne Fitzgerald, wife of Sir Robert Keith Arbuthnot, 2nd Baronet) and Campbell's chamber (Patrick Campbell, the British agent and Consul General in Egypt). Just as amazing as the chambers were Vyse's discovery of numerous graffiti in the chambers, in red paint, dating from the time the pyramids were built. Along with lines, markers and directional notations were work gangs names, including cartouches of several pharaohs, concentrated in Lady Arbuthnot's and Nelson's chamber, but all four chambers contained graffiti. The previously discovered Davison's chamber contained no graffiti. The now famous single instance of Pharaoh Khufu's name, compounded in a work gang inscription is found on the south ceiling towards the west end of Campbell's chamber. Today this chamber also contains a fair amount of 19th and 20th century graffiti. The other similar famous "Khnum-Khuf", also part of work gang graffiti, is found in Lady Arbuthnot's chamber. Several other compound cartouches can be found in this chamber. Condition: Small perforated letter "SCL" on titles, rebound in modern green cloth, volume two has not been read with many of the pages still attached, slight bump at heal edge else a very nice set.         The Picture Alphabet

Houndsditch: Bishop & Co., circa, 1840. Duodecimo, 12 pp. in total, woodcut illustrations throughout; a charming copy in the original green printed wrappers, just lightly chipped at head of front, folded (not sewn) as issued. A delightful Alphabet, fully illustrated throughout in woodcut. Here are many favourites - the Fox, the Goose, and the Lamb - but where necessary, the publisher's evidently felt capable of stretching their young audience. Not only is K for Kangaroo, but there are more unusual inclusions such as I for Ibex, and even M for Mermaid. Sadly, inspiration only went so far; here, X is for the Letter X. The work also includes a child's ditty, slightly clipped in the original printing: "When school is done, g[o] home loiter not on the wa[y] / Come to school clean and play not by the way."

The Tower of London. A historical Romance

London - Richard Bentley 1840 - The Tower of London is a novel by William Harrison Ainsworth serially published in 1840. It is a historical romance that describes the history of Lady Jane Grey from her short-lived time as Queen of England to her execution. Illustrated by George Cruikshank with frontispiece and illustrated half title and engravedplates. Firstedition, bound from parts with stab holes from binding to gutter of pages. William Harrison Ainsworth (1805 - 1882) was an English historical novelist. His first success as a writer came with Rookwood in 1834, which features Dick Turpin as its leading character. A stream of thirty-nine novels followed, the last of which appeared in 1881. George Cruikshank (1792 - 1878) was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the modern Hogarth during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience. Condition: In a half crushed morocco binding withmarbled papercovered boards. Externally, generally smart but with slight wear to extremities, and rubbing andmarks to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with occasional slight scattered foxing and handling marks, with odd slight tidemarks to plates. With the occasionalclosed tear and aprevious repair to closed tear to plate (page 48) and slight marginal loss to title. Overall: GOOD [Attributes: Hard Cover]

18 - [EHON] Katsushika HOKUSAI. EHON TEIKIN ORAI Zen. Nagoya: Eirakuya Toshiro. N.D. [Probably 1840's - originally published in 1820's]. 22.7 x 15.6 cm. String-bound, Japanese-styel, fukuro toji. Each of the three volumes consists of thirty sheets, making for a total of 90 sheets and nearly 200 Hokusai designs - landscapes, genre scenes, historical vignettes, fish, flowers, etc., etc. This guide to domestic behaviour with its charming illustrations is by no means common. Our copy is bound three volumes in one (as the Eirakuya editions are) with the original covers and printed paper title label. The Eirakuya editions, of which this is an early example, reprinted the volume one, done some 20 years earlier by Eijudo of Edo, but then added two more volumes worth of new material. Our copy is a Forrer F-23a, without the second preface, thus probably dating from the late 1840's. The impressions in the first volume are good only, but are better in volumes two and three, as you would expect from the work's bibliographic history. All in all a remarkable archive of images. The blue-green covers are bit soiled, there is a wormtrack through the first few pages, but overall in good condition.

Two small footed salt cellars or vases. Approximately 2.25" tall and 2.25" in diameter. White soft paste porcelain, each bearing the classic image of a kneeling chained female slave. On the opposite side of each is the printed phrase: "Take courage -- go on -- persevere to the last. Thomas Clarkson Age 84." Clarkson actually uttered the phrase at age 80 in 1840, at the anti-slavery convention in Freemasons' Hall, London. Presumably these vases would date from between 1840 and 1845, and were almost certainly either manufactured in England for the American export market (slavery having been abolished in England with the passage of the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833, after which Clarkson focused his efforts on abolishing slavery in the U.S.), or manufactured in America itself. While we are somewhat out of our depths identifying porcelain, our consultations with others more expert lead us to believe the former. Fine condition, with no visible flaws. Rare -- while we have seen other vintage abolitionist china -- most notably the jasper ware "Slave Medallion" depicting the famous and similar image of a kneeling male slave, made by Josiah Wedgwood, we have never encountered these vases, and can find no reference to them. .

Lyon, Vue Prise de la Guillotiere / Vista Tomada desde la Guillotiere

      V. Turgis, editeur, 10 rue Serpente, Paris 1840 - A picturesque view of Lyon from the Guillotiere after a drawing by the celebrated French painter Nicolas-Marie Joseph Chapuy. Chapuy has chosen to depict Lyon from the Guillotiere neighborhood, with the winding river running through the middle of the image. The docks next to the bridge are scattered with large stones and lumber and many small boats are moored along the banks. The bridge is crowded with pedestrians who make their way across the busy thoroughfare. Domes and spires crowd the horizon, and two large boats hurry down the river. This sweeping view is a wonderful example of Chapuy's considerable talents and picturesque eye, and a beautiful glimpse of Lyon in the early decades of the nineteenth century. Nicolas-Marie Joseph Chapuy was born in Paris in 1790 and in his early life became an officer in the Navy. An accomplished architect and landscape painter, Chapuy is perhaps best known for his stunning lithographs. He exhibited regularly at the Salon and in 1833 won a third class medal for his lithography. He produced a wide array of lithographs which varied in subject from historical scenes to architectural views. Yet it was his landscape prints which received the most praise and garnered him his celebrated reputation. This impressive view of Lyon is a fantastic example of Chapuy's talents. The image includes a numbered key at the bottom of the sheet which lists all the principal buildings and monuments in the image and provides their exact location. Benezit. Dictionnaire Critique et Documentaire Des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs, Vol. 3, p. 487. Tinted lithograph with original hand colouring. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition. Image size: 12 3/8 x 17 5/8 inches.

Report from the Select Committee on New Zealand ; together with the Minutes of Evidence taken before them, and an Appendix and Index

London: House of Commons, 3 August, 1840. Folio, 207 pp., dusted and a little marked; in the original blue printed wrappers, torn with small loss to front, spine worn away revealing the gathers; good original condition. An important report in good original condition: "valuable and historical" (Hocken). Regarding this now rather scarce report, Hocken wrote: "Prompted and promoted by the New Zealand Company, an influential meeting of merchants, bankers, shipowners, and others was held at the Guildhall on 15th April, 1840, to petition Parliament in favour of a systematic colonisation of New Zealand and to preserve it to the Crown… This report was the outcome, and was favourable. The witnesses were E.G. Wakefield, Saxe Bannister, John Blackett, R.N., John Ward, Dandeson Coates, Rev. Drs. Hinds and Beecham, Charles Enderby, W. Hutt, and Alex. Busby. Their evidence gives and account of the natives and their lands, mission labours, origin and history of the New Zealand Company, and the necessity for government and regulated colonisation."
