Pl. 196 Crested Purple Finch The Birds of America, from Drawings Made in the United States and Their Territories

New York & Philadelphia:: Audubon, J. J. & Chevalier, J.B.,, 1840-44.. First Royal Octavo. Matted in Ivory Rag Board . Fine condition with bright original hand-coloring/ . A fine original hand-colored lithograph on paper. Sheet size: 6.5 x 10.25 inches. Drawn from nature by J. J. Audubon, FRS, FLS and lithographed, printed and colored by JT Bowen, Philadelphia from The First Royal Octavo Edition of John James Audubon's The Birds of America. Includes the text from Audubon's Ornithological Biography. The Royal Octavo Edition of The Birds of America represents John James Audubon's desire to create a democratic (affordable) work based his magnum opus; the Double Elephant Folio Edition of The Birds of America. Satisfied with his research, as well as his portrayals of North America's native and distinct bird species, J.J. Audubon here rendered a miniature yet unique version of The Birds of America. As is the case with prolific artists, Audubon continued to improve upon a body of work which was viewed as perfection. During the mid-19th century, there were no photomechanical means of reproduction, every composition was then redrawn by hand, with the aid of the Camera Lucida. For this Royal Octavo Edition Audubon and his assistants translated the 435 compositions of the Double Elephant Folio edition into 500 unique compositions of individual species. Previously documented groups of heretofore unrelated birds were now separated and divided according to species, and portrayed either on a new botanical perch or within a renewed landscape. Unlike the life-sized portraits of the Double Elephant Folio edition each bird was now sized to scale on the octavo-sized plate; approximately 6.5 x 10.25 inches. With this slight alteration, Audubon created a perfected composition, and thus offered a charming vignette view of the bird, or family of birds in its natural setting. For the Royal Octavo Edition, Audubon enlisted America's premier lithographers, JT Bowen and Co. in Philadelphia and Endicott in New York to produce the work. Every composition was drawn on a limestone tablet, inked, printed and then hand-colored with watercolor. In this format Audubon presented the undocumented birds discovered during his explorations of the American West, but not previously included in the Double Elephant Folio Edition of The Birds of America. As with the folio edition, the Royal Octavo Edition was sold by subscription. One hundred individual packets of five hand-colored lithographs and accompanying text; Audubon's Ornithological Biography, was sent to the subscriber. It was issued the first and fifteenth of each month for four subsequent years. The pagination of the Royal Octavo Edition was organized to be bound in seven volumes. This successful and popular work of American ornithology was produced in an eventual eight editions, the final edition of which was issued in 1870 by George Lockwood, New York. (Wood, Casey. An Introduction to the Literature of Vertebrate Literature. London: Oxford University Press, 1931. Tyler, Ron. Audubon's Great National Work. Austin: University of Texas Press, 1993. )

Geschichte des osmanischen Reiches in Europa (7 Bände & Registerband).

Hamburg, Perthes, 1840/63..

Doch schon bald geriet Delaroche in Vergessenheit.

Atlantic Voyage - Burning of the "Poland"

Boston, 1840. Boston, 1840. Manuscript account, 38 pages, of the fateful voyage of packet ship 'Poland' which caught fire on 16 May on route from New York to Le Havre in France, her passengers being rescued two days later by Captain J.B. Ingersoll with the Clifton. 8vo. journal by W. B. Clarke & Carruth of Boston, black leather binding, measuring approximately 13,5 x 19 x 1 cm. Penned and signed by Elise R. Tyson (daughter of a China Trade merchant), as narrated to her by one of the surviving passengers, Mr. J.H. Buckingham of the Boston Courier. Some wear to boards, otherwise in very good condition, internally near fine. This journal comprises a personal and very detailed account of the final fated voyage of a packet ship that was brought down by a lightning induced fire about 25 miles south of Nantucket Shoals. From the beginning of the journey, to the devastating storm and subsequent fire to the cotton in the cargo hold, measures taken by crew and passengers for survival, the struggles and the collaborative efforts, the slowly passing and uncertain hours are recounted in detail until the final rescue. The man whose story is told was one of the few who remained on the vessel after most were placed on longboats. Not knowing if he would survive at all, his observations are detailed, compassionate and calm, his recollection vivid and sincere. The firsthand narrator of this account, and survivor of a frightful conflagration at sea is Mr. J.H. Buckingham, a descendent of Thomas Tinker, one of the Pilgrim Fathers on the Mayflower, his father being Hon. Joseph Tinker Buckingham (1771-1861), politician, journalist and founder of the Boston Courier in 1824. J.H. Buckingham is also associated with the Boston Courier, for many years serving his father's enterprise as editor, publisher, and reporter. Before this voyage he had just resigned as publisher of the Boston Courier in 1939, but would return as a reporter shortly thereafter. In July 1847 he made a stage-coach trip to Chicago and throughout Illinois, as a delegate to the River and Harbor Convention and as a reporter for his father's paper, accompanying none other than (later President) Abraham Lincoln. The writer appears to be Elizabeth (Elise) Russell Tyson, daughter of George Tyson, a railroad official and former merchant in the China trade and Sarah (Anthony) Tyson. She lived with her family at 314 Dartmouth Street in Boston, and in 1915 married attorney and fox hunting aficionado George D. Vaughan. 'Poland,' an American built packet ship laden with a cargo of flour and cotton was headed into the Atlantic when she came ablaze in a lightning storm and met her demise. On 11 May 1840 she left New York with a total of 63 persons on board, 24 being cabin passengers. On the 16th she was struck by lightning, a disastrous event which resulted in a fire being sparked onboard, creating a desperate situation which, just in time, ended in a most fortuitous rescue. On the 18th, the Boston built 'Clifton' commanded by Captain J. B. Ingersoll, bound from Liverpool to New York with two hundred and fifty steerage passengers, came upon the Poland with her passengers sequestered to the vessel's bow. She took all persons onboard, along with any salvageable provisions, until the Captain deemed it unsafe to continue. At the time of the last load being removed, Poland's decks had become too hot to stand upon. The deeply grateful group watched the Poland burned into the sea, knowing that they had so narrowly escaped the same end. The loss of property to the Poland was estimated at $150,000. The captain, crew and all passengers were saved - within only hours of the ship's sinking. A gripping, eloquently stated firsthand recollection by a shipwreck survivor on the great Atlantic Cotton Route. . Very Good.

1840. To William Pickering Concerning the Book of the Great Sea Dragons Hawkins, Thomas (1810-89). Autograph letter signed to publisher William Pickering (1796-1854). Sharpham Park, Augst. 4, 1840. 1 page plus integral address leaf. 227 x 190 mm. Stamp cut out from address leaf, not affecting text, light soiling & fraying. From fossil collector and dealer Thomas Hawkins, known for his collections of ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs, some of which are still on display at the Natural History Museum in London. Hawkins was the author of several works, the most famous of which is his Book of the Great Sea Dragons, Ichthyosauri and Plesiosauri, published in 1840 by William Pickering and referred to in the present letter, which is written in the third person: "Mr. Hawkins with compts. to Mr. Pickering, will be glad to know why any delay should have occurred in verifying the plates sent by Mr. Standidge. "He will also be glad to hear what state his Poem is in. And also when the letter (which was enclosed to Mr. P. for the Russian Ambassador) was sent him, with a bound copy of the Sea-Dragons.""Mr. Standidge" is a reference to Standidge & Co., the London firm of lithographers.         I Principj della Economia Sociale Esposti in Ordine Idealogico.

Napoli, Dalla Tipografia di Gennaro Palma, 1840. 8vo. In contemporary full blue cloth with blindstamped title to spine. Remains of paper-label to to lower part of spine. Extremities with a few bumps and light soiling. Internally with light brown-spotting throughout. 379, (1) pp.. The exceedingly rare first edition of Scialoja's seminal first publication. Scialoja - by Schumpeter characterized as a person of "conspicuous brilliance" - here presents himself as a follower of Say; to a large extend, his work is a tribute to French though. Scialoja published his work at the age of 23 and "I principj" is today being regarded as one of the landmark works of 19th century Italian economics. It anticipated many of the thoughts presented by Keynes in the first half of the 20th century and it was instrumental in the economic development of the Resorgimento. For Scialoja the main cause of underdevelopment and imbalances that prevent a balanced growth of the economy must be sought in the undeveloped agricultural sector and lack of capital. According to Scialoja you can still talk about underdevelopment if economic growth is not used to make further developments in the agrarian sector. Because of the need of continuous development (economic and techinically) Scialoja consider the business owner the most important part in the healthy growth. Public intervention is particularly wanted - and in this regard he anticipates Keynes by almost a century - to correct and guide the country's economy to prevent instabilities. Antonio Scialoja (1817 - 1877) graduated in law at Naples in 1841 and became a professor of political economy at University of Turin in 1846. Antonio Scialoja is considered a leading figure in the economic policy of the Risorgimento. As a close ally of Cavour he was one of the chief archictects of the economic aspect of the Risorgimento and functioned as Minister of Agriculture and Commerce in the Liberal government of Carlo Troja, finance minister in the interim government of Garibaldi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture in the first Ricasoli Government of the Kingdom of Italy, counselor of the Court of Auditors and senators from 1862, Minister of Finance in the Government of La Marmora, second Government of Ricasoli and finally Minister of Education in Government Lanza and in the second Government Minghetti. In 2006 the work was republished with a new introduction. Goldsmiths 31364Carl-Menger=Bibliothek 720The catalogue of Mattioli holds several later works by Scialoja but not the present. The catalogue of Einaudi lists the second edition (1846) and the first French translation (1844) but not the present first
