Various 1840 - About eighty pamphlets from Italy, printed in the 1840s and 1850s. Most are political, dating from the turbulent period of the Risorgimento when the different states on the peninsula were struggling to unite into a single country. Others deal with politics and religion, as the Papal States under Pius IX resisted unification. As primary sources, these documents may offer valuable insight into a critical historical era. One features a beautifully engraved military map. Shipping weight about 10 pounds. ; 0

Interesting Broadside reaction to a plan by Martin Van Buren to establish a militia of 200,000 men in 1840

"Unusual printed Broadside, two pages, 22"" x 16"", opens to 44"" x 32"" overall, 1840, calling out to ""DEMOCRATS!!! Mechanics, Farmers, and Working Men"" to ""Read Attentively the annexed Bill, for the raising of a Standing Army of 200,000 men... proposed by J.R. Poinsett, the present Secretary of War, and recommended to Congress by Martin Van Buren, President of the United States... when you have read, ask yourself if this is a truly 'Democratic' measure... This is not Democracy; it is Federalism of the deepest dye... "" It goes on to quote the Bill, (which is attached opposite the broadside) which calls for all white males between 20 and 45 to enroll in the National militia, arming themselves at their own expense; of whom 100,000 will be drafted into active duty. The broadside further proclaims ""... should he [Van Buren] be elected, it will undoubtedly become a law of the land. The state of Virginia... has been... strenuously opposed to a large Standing Army, and it was this bill that lost the Van Buren party the election of their Candidates... in April. Mr. Van Buren declared that he had not seen the Bill... and that he ""entertained some doubts about the Constitutionality of the desired measure... "" Prominent among the Broadside's complaints is that those fined for insubordination are subject to imprisonment if they cannot pay up, so that the rich are less severely punished than the poor (it sarcastically refers to this as ""Beautiful Democracy""). Slight age toning and dampstains, some splitting at folds, otherwise very good. Van Buren's career had been made in service to Jefferson's Virginia Democrats, and if anything, his loyalty to Andrew Jackson underscored his commitment to Republicanism. He had avoided war with England over the Canadian border and with Mexico over independent Texas, so there can be no doubt that he envisioned the military as purely defensive. Made the victim of a sharp recession and increasing polarization over slavery, on which he was a moderate, Van Buren was trounced in the 1840 election by William Henry Harrison of the upstart Whig Party."

The Life and Services of General Lord Harris,

London, John W. Parker, , 1840 . during his Campaigns in America, the West Indies, and India. Octavo, contemporary diced calf by W. H. Dalton, dark red morocco label, spine gilt in compartments, single gilt ruled panel to the boards, tan endpapers, edges sprinkled to match. Stipple-engraved portrait frontispiece, folding plan of the Battle of Mallavelly, dispositions hand-coloured. A little rubbed, front hinge slightly cracked, light off-set from the frontispiece, very mild toning to the text, a very good copy. First edition. Harris fought at Lexington as Captain of the Grenadier company of the 5th Foot, losing half his men as casualties. At Bunker Hill the 5th again suffered heavily and Harris received a head wound which required trepanning. He rejoined the campaign in New York in January 1776 and was wounded during the Philadelphia campaign the following year. In 1778 he served under Medows in the West Indies, and in 1780 his decision to sell up following his being ordered back to America, was overturned by the offer to join his old chief, recently appointed Governor of Bombay, as secretary and a-d-c. He fought through the Third Mysore War under Medows and then Cornwallis, and in 1794 was "promoted to major-general and appointed commandant of Fort William at Calcutta. In January 1797, with the local rank of lieutenant-general, he succeeded to the command of the Madras army." (ODNB) He led the successful assault on Seringapatam in which Tipu Sultan was killed. Official disapproval of the alleged rapacity of the conquerors of Seringapatam seems to have resulted in Harris feeling that he had not received full recognition of his achievements, and it was only in 1815, after the publication of a public memorial to the Prime Minister and the Commander in Chief, that he was elevated to the peerage. Controversy followed him beyond the grave, in the year of Harris's death Sir David Baird's biographer Theodore Hook published a series of letters written at the time of Seringapatam alleging that favouritism had been shown in the selection of Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington, as governor of the newly-conquered city. Harris's son-in-law Lushington published the present biography as a rejoinder to Hook's " ungenerous conclusions.

Plain Facts, Showing the Falsehood and Folly of the Rev. C.S. Bush, (A Church Minister of the Parish of Peover,) Being a Reply to His Tract Against the Latter-day Saints

Manchester: W.R. Thomas, Printer, [1840]. 16pp. Duodecimo [19.5 cm] sewn wrappers. Two inch closed tear to first page. Minor age toning. Half of the leaves uncut. Variant printing with "Price One Penny Wholesale, and Three Half-pence Single." We can locate a single institutional copy of this variant. According to Crawley "'Plain Facts' marks a small bibliographical milestone: it is the first reply to an anti-Mormon book published in England. Even though Parley Pratt is not designated as the author in the tract, it is certain that he was. He so identifies himself in his 'Reply to Thomas Taylor', and he is listed as the author in the catalogue of publications in the Millennial Star, July 1, 1847. As the title indicates, 'Plain Facts' was written in response to C.S. Bush's 'Plain Facts, Shewing the Falsehood and Folly of the Mormonites, or Latter-day Saints' which grew out of Rev. Bush's anxiety over the Book of Mormon missionaries in his parish. Since it was advertised for sale on the back wrapper of the 'Millennial Star' for August 1840, it was probably published in July before Pratt left England to return to the United States for his family. For the most part 'Plain Facts' deals with the Spaulding-Rigdon theory of the origin of the Book of Mormon. Bush's main weapon was a letter of Solomon Spaulding's widow, Matilda Davison, which Parley Pratt had earlier encountered in New York. At the time he wrote a letter himself in response to Mrs. Davison in which he described his role in converting Sidney Rigdon to Mormonism and denied any part Rigdon may have played in the production of the Book of Mormon. Plain Facts' reprints this letter along with the Davison letter and one from Sidney Rigdon refuting the Spaulding-Rigdon theory." Crawley 80. Flake/Draper 6615a. Mormon Imprints 7.

Two Abolitionist Salt Cellars, or Small Vases

Two small footed salt cellars or vases. Approximately 2.25" tall and 2.25" in diameter. White soft paste porcelain, each bearing the classic image of a kneeling chained female slave. On the opposite side of each is the printed phrase: "Take courage -- go on -- persevere to the last. Thomas Clarkson Age 84." Clarkson actually uttered the phrase at age 80 in 1840, at the anti-slavery convention in Freemasons' Hall, London. Presumably these vases would date from between 1840 and 1845, and were almost certainly either manufactured in England for the American export market (slavery having been abolished in England with the passage of the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833, after which Clarkson focused his efforts on abolishing slavery in the U.S.), or manufactured in America itself. While we are somewhat out of our depths identifying porcelain, our consultations with others more expert lead us to believe the former. Fine condition, with no visible flaws. Rare -- while we have seen other vintage abolitionist china -- most notably the jasper ware "Slave Medallion" depicting the famous and similar image of a kneeling male slave, made by Josiah Wedgwood, we have never encountered these vases, and can find no reference to them. .

[Attributes: Soft Cover]
