Im k. k. Prater Haupt-Allee beim 1. Kaffee-haus im runden Salon. Linien-Kriegs-Schiff.

Insgesamt sehr gutes Exemplar!

        De la Démocratie en Amérique

Charles Gosselin, Paris 1840 - (7 7/8 x 5 7/8 inches). Half-titles. 1 folding hand-coloured lithographic map. Expertly bound to style in green calf over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, the spines divided into five compartments by gilt filets, black morocco lettering pieces in the second and fourth compartments The first editions of both parts of Tocqueville's famous classic Democracy in America. From the time of its first publication, Democracy in America enjoyed the reputation of being the most acute and perceptive discussion of the political and social life of the United States ever published. The first part was published in an edition of less than 500 copies in January 1835. The book was an instant and sustained success and numerous editions, many with revisions, followed quickly, so that the second part, first published in April 1840, was issued concurrently with the eighth edition of the first part. The origins of the book lie in the observations Alexis de Tocqueville made during a nine month tour of the United States starting in the spring of 1831. He was accompanied by his friend and fellow student, Gustave de Beaumont, and their original goal was to study the penitentiary system of the United States. After visiting prisons in the East, they undertook a tour of the South as far as New Orleans, ascended the Mississippi, visited the Great Lakes and Canada, and returned via New York. After writing their report on prisons, Tocqueville worked on the first part of Democracy in America in 1833-1834, publishing it in Paris in 1835 to great acclaim. The 1840 second part was equally as successful and the book remained in print throughout the 19th century: there were probably more than fifty editions in English and French published before 1900, besides numerous translations. Considering the many editions of the first part prior to the publication of the second part, along with the limited print run of the first edition of the first part, sets containing the first editions of both parts, as here, are particularly rare and desirable. Clark III:111; Howes T-278 & T-279; Sabin 96060 & 96061; Library of Congress, A Passion for Liberty, Alexis de Tocqueville on Democracy & Revolution (Washington, 1989); Nolla De la Démocratie en Amérique (Paris: 1990) II, pp.334-335.         Costumes of British Ladies from the time of William the 1st to the reign of Queen Victoria

London: Dickenson & Son. Full Morocco. Near Fine. N.d., circa 1840. Folio, 48 hand-colored lithographed plates, some heightened in gilt, all mounted on card, as originally issued. Each accompanied by brief caption relating to authorities upon which illustration was based, and this caption is on separate leaf's verso, and there is a tissue guard sheet between this and the related plate. Title page with lovely hand-colored floral border. Followed by list of subscribers, which contains 171 names, and this must surely have been the extent of the entire issue since copies are extremely scarce. (Obviously the book has been mined many times as a breaker for plates.) The original gutta percha binding has been replaced with a sewn casing that is far more durable. Modern green full morocco and marbled endpapers. Gilt edges. Offsetting onto tissues. Small discreet library stamp on versos of plates -- otherwise no signs of ex-library whatsoever. Very occasional light fox marks.

Autograph Letter, Signed. To Col. William Davenport

New York: Astor House, 1840. 1 1/4 page letter with initialed postscript, with integral blank. 4to (10 x 8 inches). Old folds. SECOND SEMINOLE WAR Letter to Colonel William Davenport, 1st Infantry, United States Army West Florida, written prior to Scott's return to Florida in 1840. Scott writes "I begin to entertain hopes that the Florida War may be terminated by the negotiations ... A deputation has arrived from the Arkansaw & another, it is said, is expected at Washington from Florida. Something may come out of this double diplomacy to enable us to withdraw our troops from those miserable swamps." Unfortunately for the men, the fighting in the swamps continued for two more years. In 1842 the Seminoles remaining in Florida were allowed to stay, providing they confined themselves to the established reservation. Scott is the longest serving general of any man in American history, and many historians rank him as the best American commander of his time, as do other military men like the Duke of Wellington, who called Scott the greatest living general after Scott captured Mexico City in 1847. Scott was also the commanding officer in charge of the removal of the Cherokee from Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama. In an interesting postscript to this letter, Scott asks Davenport to attend to a sartorial matter, a black cashmere vest, made of the finest material, and a sidearm pocket for spectacles.

        Master Humphrey's Clock

London: Chapman and Hall, 1840-41. First Edition in Book Form. Master Humphrey's Clock was planned to be a collection of stories and sketches told by Master Humphrey and his circle of friends, as Dickens outlined in his preface - written in weekly parts over 40 months. Bound from the original parts. 3 tall octavo volumes (26cm); publisher's purple-brown vertical-ribbed cloth, covers decorated with blind border of thick and thin fillets and broad elaborate flower leaf and stem design, with spines lettered and decorated in gilt with five scrolled shields and three leaf-bulb designs; primary binding, with the hands on gilt clocks on each front cover pointing to the hour which corresponds to the appropriate volume number; variant marbled endpapers; [2], [iv], 306; [vi], 306; [vi], 426pp; illus. with three frontispieces and numerous wood-engravings in text by George Cattermole and Hablot K.         Fine collection of watercolors of French garden designs

S.l. (France), n.d. (ca. 1840-1850). IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. Collection of 10 large watercolor drawings, ca. 42 x 26 cm. Minor wear or thumbing. Preserved in a green cloth protective case An fascinating archive of watercolor garden designs, no doubt executed by a landscape architect as working drawings for clients. Such preliminary renderings as these were almost never saved; thus the present collection is of especial interest. Three clients are specified. 1. "M. Arnaud a la Noëveillard a Pornic" (Pays de Retz, the southernmost port in Bretagne). Three gardens of distinction are preserved at Pornic, including that of Auguste Renoir, Jardin de Gourmalon, and the Jardin de la Fontaine aux Bretons. If the present plans were in fact realized, it does not appear that the gardens have survived. 2. "Mr. Ferronnier a St. Aignon" (i.e. St. Aignon, near Tours). 3. "Jardin a Mr. Loche" which is among the more interesting of the drawings since two different possible garden designs are here proposed. All of the designs feature curved and interlocking paths that surround the buildings of the estates. Seven of the sheets are English and are watermarked "J. Whatman Turkey Mill" (date beneath is "184[?]"). Three of the sheet are Dutch and are watermarked "D & C Blauw." The presence of 7 sheets of English paper in an archive consisting of 10 watercolors is most curious; was this particular landscape architect of English origin?

Partly-Printed Autograph Document Signed (by election official).

      - 16th president of the United States. Partly-printed ADS (by an election official, not Lincoln), 2pp (recto and verso), 7 3/4" X 13", Appalonia Precinct, IL, 1840 November. Near fine. Minor, even age toning. Lincoln ran for elector in the William H. Harrison vs. Henry Clay presidential election of 1840. He failed to get elected as elector, though the Whig candidate Harrison won. In this rare poll book leaf, headlined "Poll Book for Appolonia Precinct, Nov. 1840" partly in print, the registered voters names run down the left margin (26 on each side, numbered pages 1 and 2) -- all penned in the same bold hand, no doubt an election official. A printed column running across the top, labeled "For Presidential Electors," lists ten elector candidates -- the last being Lincoln, whose name is misspelled "Abram Lincoln." (Fellow Lincoln colleague, legislator and future Union general John A. McClernand, 1812-1900, is also listed.) The five Whig candidates seem to have performed quite poorly in this particular precinct, gathering far fewer votes than the five Democrat candidates. A rare relic of one of Lincoln's first political disappointments at age thirty-one.
