Observations on the Mussulmauns of India: descriptive of their manners, customs, and habits, and religious opinions. . . .

Full calf, each volume bearing a spine label and the gilt stamp of ?The Society of Writers to the Signet? on all four covers, both rebacked; occasional annotation in pencil. Unidentified bookplate on the paste - down of each volume. First edition. No mere travelogue, this fascinating and often overlooked work is an important account of the customs, beliefs, and practices of Muslims in India during the early nineteenth century. Written in the form of 27 letters by an Englishwoman who spent twelve years in northern India with her husband, an employee of the East India Company, this account challenged many of the reigning stereotypes held by Westerners at the time. Although she remained a Christian, the author gained intimate knowledge of the community in which she lived and included detailed descriptions of daily life and customs, including everything from the role of charity in Muslim culture to interactions between masters and slaves. Indeed, she even accounts on the life of Musalman ladies, describing religious feasts and fasts, marriage ceremonies and that of the surroundings of a native household. This occurred during the reigns of Ghazi - ud - din Haidar and Nasir - ud - din Haidar, who occupied the throne during her residence at Lucknow. Avoiding many references to the palace intrigues and apparent mis - administration, she makes only apologies for the disorganized state of the country. Apparently after the author returned to England, it is likely that she was attached in some capacity to the household of the Princess Augusta (d.1840), as the list of subscribers to her book is headed by Queen Adelaide, the Princess Augusta, and other ladies of the Royal Family. She must have been in good repute among Anglo - Indians, because several well - known names appear in the list. According to the preface to the second edition of 1917 by William Crooke: ?The value of the book rests on the fact that it is a record of the first - hand experiences of an English lady who occupied the exceptional position of membership of a Musalman family. She tells us nothing of her friends in Lucknow, but she had free access to the houses of respectable Sayyids, and thus gained ample facilities for the study of the manners and customs of Musalman families. Much of her information on Islam was obtained from her husband and his father, both learned, travelled gentlemen, and by them she was treated with a degree of toleration unusual in a Shi?ah household, this sect being rigid and often fanatical followers of Islam.?

Saunders' Portraits and Memoirs of Eminent Living Political Reformers. The Portraits by George Hayter and other Eminent Artists, and the Memoirs by a Distinguished Literary Character. [With] a Sketch of the Progress of Parliamentary Reform

Published by the New Proprietor, J. Dowding, 1840. Roy. 8vo., First Edition, with a fine engraved portrait frontispiece and 27 fine engraved portrait plates (all original tissue guards present), some very light and generally inoffensive foxing, a few guards offset as intended; contemporary half calf, marbled boards, gilt back, sprinkled edges, covers lightly age-marked and rubbed at extremities else a remarkably bright, clean copy with excellent impressions of the plates. Includes (in alphabetical order, and each with a portrait): Bowring, Buller, Buxton, Byng, Codrington, Durham, Ebrington, Grey, Grote, Holland, Hume, James, Lansdowne, Leader, Melbourne, Morpeth, Mulgrave, Palmerston, Roebuck, Russell, Spencer, Talfourd, Thompson, Thomson. Wakley, Warburton and Wyse. An important text in the literature of parliamentary reform in Britain. Though the work is often noted for the excellent likenesses of its plates (the majority engraved by Mote and Hull from work by Hayter and others), it would be a mistake to under-value Saunders' assessments, which comprise a key series of contemporary appraisals of biography, character and achievement not easily found elsewhere. Text by novelist John Saunders (1810-1895); the majority of portraits by William Hayter (1792-1879); Sketch of Parliamentary Reform by William Howitt (1792-1871). Scarce, especially in this condition. . Catalogs: political economy.

Is not Stanfield jealous in voting against it, or is not S:P: jealous that Stanfield 's beauty should be confirm'd and his doubtful?" 7) To R[obert?] BENT, postmark 13 April 183[3?], 1 p., thanking him for the offer to notice his work in the monthly list but wishes his subscribers to have their copies before he advertises it as published. Robert Bent was a son of William Bent who founded 'Bent's Literary Advertiser.' This may refer to his most famous and important lithographic work "Fascimiles of Sketches made in Flanders and Germany and drawn on Stone." (1833). 8) To E. MAGRATH, at the Athenaeum, 20/12/36, 2 1/2 pp., commenting that HUNT's prices "are beyond what I mentiond yet the labour, & expense of models, demand something above such house-painters as Prout." The two paintings they'd preferred: "the boy praying is 15 or 17 Gs " and the "boy tired of the sermon, ranks first, & will be 20 or 25." He sends a message to STANFIELD that he's not without hope and said that something similar might be said to [J. M.] WILLIAM TURNER. 9) To his friend, the eminent dealer D. COLNAGHI, 1836, 2 1/2 pp., enquiring about the Caneletto etchings and sending regards to his friends DAVID ROBERTS & BROCKEDON 10) To S. FOX at St. Leonards, [watermarked 1839], 1 p., cancelling an appointment due to ill health 11) To "My dear Sir", 26 October 1841, 2 1/2 pp., obviously a friend writing "My promise was to send you half a dozen specimens of subjects for a vol of LITHOGRPHY. I have 3 in hand but they are not what I wish...I have nothing which would answer in a small size but gateways, towers and an old archway." He compliments the recipient on his "Woods & Forests".

Schirmer (1802-1866) und A.F.
