Nauvoo, Il.: Stearns...Cincinnati, Ohio, 1840. 12mo. Contemporary sheep, neatly rebacked, original gilt spine laid down, green leather label. Small section at bottom of spine repaired. Corners lightly worn. Titlepage repaired in gutter. Very good, internally clean. Scarce third edition, first state of THE BOOK OF MORMON, published by Ebenezer Robinson and Don Carlos Smith, younger brother of Joseph Smith. This work was actually printed in Cincinnati, despite the Nauvoo imprint. "By December 1839 the Book of Mormon was again out of print, and on the 29th the Nauvoo high council voted to publish a new edition under the supervision of the First Presidency as soon as funds could be raised" - Crawley. Robinson and Smith received permission from Joseph Smith to print 4,000 copies of the book, providing all the necessary funds themselves. The book was stereotyped and printed in Cincinnati, and is known to exist in three states, all printed from the same plates. The present copy is the first state as described by Crawley, who notes that the second and third states may be later impressions struck off in Nauvoo. This edition contains a significant number of revisions and corrections from the 1837 Kirtland second edition. Joseph Smith moved the Church to Kirtland, Ohio in 1831, after founding the movement in Palmyra, New York the previous year. The Church was headquartered in Kirtland until 1838, when Smith relocated to Missouri, and shortly thereafter to the small town of Commerce, Illinois, which Smith re-christened "Nauvoo." It was there that Joseph Smith met his untimely end in 1844, when he and his brother were killed by an angry mob of citizens from neighboring towns. The church remained centered in Nauvoo until 1846 when, amidst a growing sea of hostility, they fled west under the guidance of Brigham Young.

London: William Pickering, 1840. n. Hardcover. Inscribed by the Author to the Book's Illustrator, and in a Fine Hering Binding. 193 x 118 mm (7 1/2 x 4 5/8"). xii, 174 pp. VERY ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY OLIVE GREEN MOROCCO, ELABORATELY GILT, BY HERING (stamp-signed on verso of front free endpaper), covers with delicate gilt frame of drawer handle, floral sprig, and star tools, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with similar tooling, densely gilt turn-ins, pale yellow endpapers, all edges gilt. With frontispiece, numerous representations of hieroglyphics in the text, and three plates. Half title with pencilled PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION FROM THE AUTHOR TO THE ILLUSTRATOR OF THE WORK: "Joseph Bonomi Esq. / from his friend / A. T. Cory"; front pastedown with the engraved bookplate of Samuel Ashton Thompson-Yates. Just the slightest hint of rubbing to joints (well masked with dye), a faint graze on rear cover, spine probably sunned (though the abundance of gilt making this difficult to determine), significant foxing to preliminary leaves, frontispiece, and title page (moderate foxing to plates II and III and adjacent text leaves), but the text otherwise clean and fresh, and the decorative binding lustrous, scarcely worn, and altogether pleasing. This is a desirable association copy of an influential work on Egyptian hieroglyphics, in a binding by one of the most important English workshops of the first half of the 19th century. These interpretations of 189 hieroglyphs is attributed to the fifth century Egyptian Horapollo, or Horus Apollo, with the Greek translation assigned to a certain Philippus. It was first printed by Aldus Manutius in 1505, with Latin, Italian, French, and German translations being issued over the next 50 years. Strangely, no English translation appeared before the present one by Pembroke College scholar Alexander Turner Cory (1814-77), a version first published by Pickering the year before our printing. The illustrations here are by Joseph Bonomi (1796-1878), whom DNB describes as "one of the foremost hieroglyphic draughtsmen of his day." Bonomi contributed illustrations to every major publication on Egyptology from the 1830s through the 1860s, even designing a font for the hieroglyphic dictionary compiled by Egyptologist Samuel Birch, curator of Oriental antiquities at the British Museum. The tasteful and elegant binding here is the work of the firm founded by Charles Hering (d. ca. 1812) and continued by his brother and son until the early 1840s. Although the career of Charles Hering was brief (from about 1795-1812), Ramsden considers his work a memorable representation of the transition in binding styles from those of the German émigrés of the late 18th century to the new generation of binders headed by Charles Lewis, and the volumes bound by his descendants (like this one) continued the Hering tradition of classical elegance.

A huge, attractive, and rare membership certificate for missionaries to China - with an elaborate pictorial engraving, possibly unique

n.p., [c. 1840]. 20.5" x 16". "Partly-printed Document Signed, ""Saml: Miller,"" as President of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church, 1 page, 20.5"" x 16"", [c. 1840], an engrossed membership certificate featuring a superb illustration at center, 13.25"" x 8"", and titled in Chinese and English at top: ""This is the word of the Lord, not by might nor by power, but by my Spring, saith the Lord of hosts"". Two minor expertly repaired tears do not affect text or engraving, typical folds, else very good. The engraving, signed ""Miss M.K.L."" in print below the plate, is dominated by a large view of two populated shores, with a sailing ship at center beneath the words: ""GO YE INTO ALL THE WORLD AND PREACH THE GOSPEL."" At left, an American crowd of well-wishers gather on the dock to bid farewell to departing missionaries with a church and prominent buildings. Just to the left, printed vertically, are the words: ""How shall thy believe in him of whom they have not heard, and how shall they hear without a preacher, and how shall they preach except they be sent."" On the other shore a smaller crowd mingles before several what appear to be several temples exhibiting various Asian architectural styles. Beneath the main plate is an image of a printing press and a globe. To the right, again printed vertically, are the words: ""The people which sat in darkness saw great light and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death, light is sprung up.""Preacher and historian Samuel Miller (1769-1850) was a prolific writer and major figure in the Presbyterian Church. In 1835, while teaching at the Princeton Theological Seminary, he published an influential sermon, ""The Earth Filled With the Glory of the Lord,"" and was instrumental in founding the Board of Foreign Missions in 1837. The Board of Foreign Missions sent its first representatives to China in 1843 and were soon based in Guangzhou, Hainan, Macau, Shanghai, spreading into other parts of the country These Presbyterian missionaries ran hospitals, as well as a type foundry producing Chinese type in seven sizes.Rare. While we have seen membership certificates for the Board of Foreign Missions, we have never encountered one this elaborate or this early. "

        Pilgrim's Progress: In Two Parts

      L. and G. Seeley, London, 1840. Hardcover. Fine. "John Bunyan could be said to have authored one of the most influential books in the English language. But 'The Pilgrim's Progress' is so much more than an historical novel. Bunyan's plan for his readers is for them to travel through this book as an adventure through the Christian life - retold on paper and in pictures. The story of Christian and his companions has been a favourite for generations. John Bunyan's imaginative text brings out the same, practical, necessary lessons that everyone needs to know..." [Pub. Info] With original notes by the Rev. Thomas Scott. Full leather; gold on all page edges; gold tooling on cover; minor wear to hinge areas of outside covers; slight wear to the extremities. This is a deluxe and beautiful edition.

        The Holy Bible. In Tamil.

We are told by Darlow and Moule that this is "A new edition of . . . [the Tamil Bible of 1840]; with fresh chapter-headings and dates, translated from the English Bible by M. Winslow." While Winslow was the translator of these elements, "The Old Testament, [was] translated from the original by J.P. Fabricius; [and] the New Testament by the Rev. C.T.E. Rhenius and revised by the Committee of the Madras Auxiliary Bible Society."The first complete translation of the Bible into Tamil appeared in 1727. This is only the second complete Bible in Tamil in one volume. The English title-page is followed by a title-page in Tamil script; the text of the Bible is => entirely in Tamil script, as is the pagination. The N.T. has a separate title page in English and Tamil. The translators were a German missionary of the Lutheran faith who was a scholar of the Tamil language (Johann Philipp Fabricius, 1711-791) and a German-born missionary of the Church Mission Society (Charles Theophilus Ewald Rhenius, 1790-1838).

A Sketch of the History and Topography of West Point and the U.S. Military Academy.

Henry Perkins,, Philadelphia: 1840 - A charming period piece focussing on the geographical description of the landscape for West Point as a military garrison, a historical description of its prominence and importance during the Revolutionary War, and the establishment of the US Military Academy, its teachers and rules governing the cadets. Slim, small 8vo, brown moire cloth boards, 140 pp, spine sunned, corners bumped, scattered fox spotting throughout not affecting text. Neat previous owner name at front free end paper. We locate only one record of a folding map at page 9, (a Hathi trust digital copy showing the map) which is not present in this copy. Romberg's discussion of tabes dorsalis, lucid in clinical details and brilliant in his surmise as to the site of the initial pathological changes, contains the classic remark that ataxics cannot stand with their eyes shut (Romberg's sign) . . . (ed. 1, p. 795)" Haymaker & Schiller, Founders of Neurology, p. 508. - - "We can regard him as the first clinical neurologist" Spillane, Doctrine of the Nerves, p. 289; 279-89). - - "The first man to bring order and system to neurology was Moritz Heinrich Romberg (1795-1873), professor of pathology and director of the University Hospital in Berlin. (...)Romberg's work culminated in his classic text "Lehrbuch der Nerverkankheiten des Menschen", which was the first systematic treatise in neurology and a milestone in the development of clinical neurology. (...) Romberg accepted the difference between the function of the anterior and posterior roots of the spinal cord und used this distinction in motor and sensory nerves as a basis for the division of his textbook into two sections, "Neuroses of Sensibility" and "Neurosis of Motility". The first section describes abnormal sensory function - including pain, hyperesthesia and anesthesia - affecting various parts of the body; the second section on motor disorders is separated into spasm, tremor and paralysis, and includes other motor symptoms that occur in neurological disease. Although localization of function and disease in the nervous system was not to be clarified for another twenty or thirty years, Romberg had made a significant step in this direction from the old classification of neurological disorders into merly palsy, apoplexy and epilepsy that had generally existed from Hippocrates to Cooke. - In Romberg's "sensory" section there is a description of branchial and sciatic neuritis, peripheral neuritis and causalgia, neuromas, ciliary neuralgia, facial neuralgia, various forms of headache and other conditions recognized today. Romberg also described position sense, pointing out that Bell (1826) first directed attention to this, and saying of Bell that "his observations are as ingenious as they are conclusive". (...)The section on motor diseases contains a long description of muscular spasms, particularly those associated with breathing and talking, as well as presentations of chorea, tetanus, epilepsy, facial paralysis and his classic elucidation of tabes doralis. He recognized tabes as a distinct clinical entity and appropriated for it the designation tabes dorsalis. Not only did Romberg note the insecurity of stance and gait, but he also recognized the occurrence of amblyopia; he even recorded that when the optic nerve is not involved, there is "a change of the pupils of one or both eyes, consisting in contraction with loss of motion". L.C. McHenry: Garrison's History of Neurology 278.ff." - Romberg inaugurated the modern era in the study of diseases of the nervous system. His 'Lehrbuch' is the first formal treatise in this field. - - Garrison-Morton No.4528

To Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria, This Map of the World on Mercator's Projection is most respectfully dedicated .

Published by J. and C. Walker . and William Colling Hobson, London 1840 - Large engraved case map, full period hand coloring, dissected and linen-backed as issued. The map with insets of both poles and surrounded by descriptive panels of text. With early manuscript additions in the Arctic. Housed in the original green cloth case. Stunning large format case map of the World, featuring Texas as a Republic: with beautiful period hand coloring The surrounding panels of text provide an extraordinary amount of information on the countries of the world: population, size of countries, chief productions, important towns and cities, values of imports and exports, national debt, number of naval vessels and distances surround the map of the world. The map itself is highly detailed for a world map, and includes the very latest of the geographic discoveries of its time, particularly along the northwest coast of America and in the Arctic. Indeed, an early owner has furthered this with manuscript ink additions, charting discoveries made by Robert McClure on his first navigation of the northwest passage in 1850-54. Perhaps the most interesting mapping, however, is the bold depiction of Texas as a Republic, here distinctly colored in purple and with a separate entry in the text surround listing its population as 38,000. A wonderful example of a rare and desirable case map of the world. Rumsey 3820. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
