        Chashitsu okoshi-ezu. [Pop-up Japanese Tea-Houses]

1840. |~||~|CHANOYU TEA HOUSES TANSAI, Nobutatsu. Chashitsu okoshi-ezu. [Pop-up Japanese Tea-Houses]. A Complete set of 65 architectural models of chashitsu, Japanese tea-houses, yoritsuki and koshikake (waiting huts and roofed arbors), plus other "out-buildings" associated with the tea ceremony. Each model on washi or kozo construction paper, with ample information supplying design details, dimensions, textures and materials used, written in black ink in the precise, artistic hand of Tansai Nobutatsu. Each model with his artist's stamp. Housed in two-tier contemporary Japanese wooden box. Manuscript table of contents pasted to inside of the lid. No Date or place, but Kyoto, 1820-40s. |~||~||~||~||~| Exceptionally Rare, complete set of Japanese architectural models of tea-houses (chashitsu) associated with the tea ceremony (chanoyu). These models with manuscript annotations date from the first half of the nineteenth century, probably constructed in Kyoto. This rare survival consists of 65 separate models of folding drawings, called okoshi-ezu, "pop-up" drawings which unfold to create a three dimensional structure. The okoshi-ezu are attached to a large plan representing the floor; the particular tea-house is identified and the stamp of the artist Tansai Nobutatsu appears on this "platform" plan. Onto the platform plan are floor patterns drawn in black ink revealing strict tatami-mat arrangements. The folding flaps of exterior walls, interior walls, ceilings, alcoves, passage-ways, etc., are attached by folding hinges to the platform. These folding flaps possess detailed drawings on both sides of the paper, delineating interior decor, highly refined window structures, tokonoma details, shoji windows or interior shoji walls, holes for windows and openings. Elements such as benches, shelves, shutters, awnings, etc. are secondary folding structures attached to the folding walls. Descriptive Japanese text identifies the structural dimensions, spatial measurements and original materials and textures used. Special attention is paid to bamboo, reeds, vines, and support timbers. The entire structure is flat when the platform plan in unfolded and the tea-house is erected by folding up the walls and attaching them together with the supplied tabs and slots. "There is some disagreement among scholars as to whether okoshi-ezu were used during design or simply served to record existing buildings. The difficulty is that although the okoshi-ezu method seems to have originated early in the Edo period - exactly when or how is not clear - the oldest surviving examples date from the latter part of the Edo period [i.e. 1800-1868]" (Andrew Barrie, Okoshi-ezu: Speculations on thinness, footnote #1). The set includes models of tea houses from the 13th century through the 19th century, many designed by the great names in the history of chanoyu from the inception of the Japanese tea ceremony: Sen-no-Rikyu (1522-1591), Takeno Joo (1502-1555), Genpaku Sotan (1578-1658), Koshin Sosa (1613-1672), Genso Sosa (1678-1730), all iemoto of the Omotesenke Tea School, as well as Edo tea masters such as Kawakami Fuhaku (1716-1807). The first models are of tea-houses designed by Sen no Rikyu, depicting his tearooms of 4.5 jo, 2.5 jo, 1.5 jo, (each "jo" represents the size of one tatami mat - 1.653 square meters or 3.13 x 6.27 feet). There are also models of the famous tea-houses at Fushin-an, the headquarters of the Omotesenke tea-school in Kyoto and of Myoki-an, the Zen temple of the Rinzai sect in the Kyoto prefecture. The Taian teahouse, at Myoki-an represents one of only three tea houses in Japan designated as a National Treasure. Purportedly designed by Sen no Rikyu, it is the oldest surviving Japanese tea-house. Models #45 to 62 include the various shelving for chanoyu utensils in the mizuya or katte kitchen area to the rear of a tea house, plus loose tables, screens, several koshikake or waiting houses, out buildings, bamboo fences, gates, etc. We have been able to locate no surviving Okoshi-ezu models for tea-houses before the nineteenth century. The National Diet Library in Tokyo has a similar set of model tea-houses by Tansai Nobutatsu with 46 plates. The Peabody Essex Museum has a similar set by the same artist consisting of 90 plates housed in two wooden boxes. Peabody Essex dates their set to the 1820. Both of these sets come with similar manuscript lists of the plates pasted onto the inside cover of the wooden boxes. It appears that Tansai Nobutatsu (dates unknown) was either a tea-master himself or perhaps an architect with intimate knowledge of chanoyu. Condition: The 65 models have survived in a very fine state of preservation, especially since they fold flat but were designed to be manipulated and folded into 3 dimensional structures. There is some minor worming to several of the models, mostly however on the plan. The contemporary Japanese wooden box in near-fine condition. See: S. Horiguchi, Chashitsu okoshiezu shu [Folding Drawings of the Famous Tea Rooms], 12 volumes, Tokyo: Bokusui shobo, 1963-67.         The Nelson Debating Club: Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Rules

n.p., n.d. but evidently Newcastle-upon-Tyne, ca. 1840. large sheet of paper mounted on linen (70 x 40 cms), the 14 Rules> in ink in a calligraphic hand, the 27 members' names appended as signatures at the foot. Some dustsoiling but in very good state of preservation, bound into a heavy binding of black half roan over marbled wood boards, loose, spine very worn. [bound with], Nelson Debating Club, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Rules.> n.p., n.d. but evidently Newcastle-upon-Tyne, ca. 1844. large sheet of paper mounted on linen (73 x 40 cms), the 17 Rules> in red and black ink in a calligraphic hand, the 15 members' signatures in ink at foot, in fine state of preservation. A charming pair of documents, the second apparently postdating the first as indicated by revisions to and additions to the rules. These rules included the usual administrative conditions, officers of the Club, subscriptions and procedures. One significant change between the first and second versions involved the crucial choice of a subject for debate. The version one rule was that 'A subject shall be given every week by the chairman or his substitute to be debated on at the next ensuing meeting, notice of which subject shall be sent to members not present'. This was changed to something rather more collegiate: 'Each member shall be at liberty to enter any subject for discussion into a book to be kept for that purpose and that the committee choose from them the subject to be discussed'. A further notable change affected matters of religion and politics. In the first version Rules> it was agreed that 'on account of the conscientious difference of opinion on the subject of religion that subject shall never be debated'. But the draconian regulation in the second version of the Rules> added even tougher censorship: 'On account of the conscientious difference of opinion on the subject of religion and of the height to which party spirit runs on the subject of politics, those subjects shall never be discussed'. It might be surmised that the seven identified resignations and the overall reduction in the number of members was exacerbated by the prohibition on debates on religion and politics. Both, after all, were contentious and therefore highly debateable subjects. The club met weekly (Wednesdays at 7 pm) at the Freemasons Lodge in Nelson Street. Members, whose signatures are appended to each document, included several names recognisable in the public life of the city. (A recent owner of the manuscripts has added several notes in pencil identifying many of the members).

Riche ou pauvre Exposition succincte des causes et des effets de la distribution actuelle des richesses sociales

Paris & Geneva: Librairie d'Ab. Cherbuliez et Ce,, 1840. Octavo (192 x 125 mm). Contemporary marbled boards, flat roan spine ruled and lettered gilt, sprinkled edges. Library stamp of the VSK library to title and free endpaper. Board edges lightly rubbed; a crisp, clean copy. First edition of a work to which Karl Marx devoted an entire chapter in his Theorien über den Mehrwert (Theories of surplus value), writing that this book, together with George Ramsay's Essay on the distribution of wealth, is the only one to have made the distinction (of great importance to Marx) between "constant" and "variable" capital (i.e. wage and non-wage capital). As Marx saw it: "It is an incontrovertible fact that, as capitalist production develops, the portion of capital invested in machinery and raw materials grows, and the portion laid out in wages declines. This is the question with which both Ramsay and Cherbuliez are concerned. For us, however, the main thing is: does this fact explain the decline in the rate of profit?" (Theories of surplus value, book III). In 1835 Cherbuliez, a Swiss lawyer, succeeded Rossi as professor of public law and political economy at the University of Geneva, moving to Paris in 1848, to later return to Switzerland, where he held the professorship of economics at the University of Lausanne before Walras. In political economy he was a follower of Sismondi, with elements of Ricardo, steadfastly conservative and antisocialist. Admired by Mill, Cossa, and Cairnes, his Précis de la science économique et ses practicales applications, a masterpiece of erudition, is described by Schumpeter as "one of the best textbooks of 'classic' economics" (R. F. Hébert in The New Palgrave).

        LE TRIOMPHE DE LA MORT

Paris: Simon Raçon et Comp, 1840. n. Hardcover. 146 x 114 mm (5 3/4 x 4 1/2"). 3 p.l., 47 leaves. Very pleasing 19th century maroon crushed morocco, Jansenist, by Capé Masson-Debonnelle (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with central gilt skull and with crossbone cornerpieces, raised bands, spine panels alternating gilt skull and crossbones, gilt titling, densely gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In a fine black quarter-morocco folding box. WITH 47 COPPER ENGRAVINGS BY CHRISTIAN VON MECHEL, 46 of these after the original designs of Holbein, one (a double-page plate) added by Mechel. A quarter inch at the top of front joint a bit rubbed, occasional faint offsetting from plates, otherwise A VERY FINE COPY, especially clean, fresh, and bright internally, with rich impressions of the plates, and in a lustrous, essentially unworn binding. This is an attractively bound mid-19th century reprint of a beautifully engraved 18th century edition of Holbein's famous "Dance of Death." Mortimer says that Holbein's "Figures of Death" contributed to the traditional "Dance of Death" genre a sharpening of the humor and satire and a heightening of the drama, so that the figures became part of a fully realized scene, not just members of the traditional processional dance. Christian von Mechel (1737-1817) was a prominent Basel engraver and art dealer whose clients included Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Emperor Joseph II; his reproductions of Holbein's engravings have long been admired. Mechel based his work here on drawings said to be by Holbein which were in the collection of Prince Galitzin at the imperial court in Vienna. It was not until the 1970s that experts determined these drawings were not, in fact, by Holbein, but were copies by Dutch artist Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). Capé (d. 1867) was one of the most distinguished binders in France in the middle years of the 19th century, and he was especially well known for the delicacy of his work. He was the binder to the Empress Eugenie, and Béraldi calls him "the Bozérian of the second Empire." Masson and Debonnelle joined the Capé firm later in the master's career, and continued working as bookbinders until 1885.

        American Theatrical Broadside Collection

1840. (DRAMA).American Theatrical Broadside Collection.Boston: circa 1840-1880.Fifty-five individual sheets.Nearly all of these 55 delightful broadsides were published in Boston in the mid-19th century— advertising various Boston venues— romantic dramas, comedies, satires, farces, and even lighter fare.During the 19th century, Boston experienced a conflict between its Puritan background and an emerging trend toward ?"light?" entertainment and artistic freedom. Despite the controversy, theater-going in Boston has always been quite popular, even if not always entirely legal. Newly established burlesque theaters often gave themselves such ?"cultural?" names as the ?"Boston Museum,?" and the ?"Boston Academy of Music,?" in order to disguise their identity, albeit thinly. The growing demand for a night?'s entertainment fostered the appearance of small playhouses in the neighborhoods, rivaling the ?"more prominent theaters located close to Boston?'s commercial center and the Beacon Hill residences of affluent theater-goers?" (Boston Athenæum).Extremely good condition, with minimal edge-wear and fold-lines.

The Ingoldsby Legends Or Mirth and Marvels.

Richard Bentley, 1840-47., London: - Pagination: [2],v,[1],338,[2];vii,[1],288;[2],364pp. Early 20th c. crushed red morocco, gilt rule on covers with corner fleurons in gold with green morocco on-lays, spines banded and gilt with flower devices repeated [by Wood of London], gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, minor rubbing, some darkening on endpapers from turn-ins; exceptionally fine clean copy. Illustrations: 3 engraved t.p.s, Contains 2 ports. and 17 plates by George Cruickshank (8) and John Leech. Barham, Richard Harris (1788-1845) The ÔIngoldsby LegendsÕ would probably never have existed but for his desire to aid his old friend and schoolfellow, the publisher Bentley, in ÔBentley's Miscellany,Õ commenced under the editorship of Charles Dickens in January 1837. The magazine was originally intended to have been called ÔThe Wits' Miscellany.Õ ÔWhy,Õ urged Barham, when the change of title was suggested to him, Ôwhy go to the other extreme?Õ This excellent mot has been erroneously attributed to Jerrold. ÔThe Spectre of TappingtonÕ opened the series, and was speedily succeeded by a number of others, at first derived from the legendary lore of the author's ancestral locality in Kent, but soon enriched by satires on the topics of the day and subjects of pure invention, or borrowed from history or the ÔActa Sanctorum.Õ The later members of the series appeared in the ÔNew Monthly Magazine.Õ The success of the ÔLegendsÕ was pronounced from the first, and when published collectively in 1840 they at once took the high place in humorous literature which they have ever since retained. A second series was added in 1847, and a third was edited by his son in the same year.Barham owes his honourable rank among English humourists to his having done one thing supremely well. He has thoroughly naturalised the French metrical conte with the adaptations necessary to accommodate it to our national genius. French humour is rather finely malicious than genial: Barham carries geniality to the verge of the exuberant. He riots in fancy and frolic, and his inexhaustible faculty of grotesque rhyming is but the counterpart of his intellectual fertility in the domain of farcical humour. There is, indeed, an element of farce in his fun, an excessive reliance on forced contrasts between the ghastly and the ludicrous, and a not unfrequent straining after cheap effects; nor can the most successful work of the professional jester be compared to the recreation of a great poet, such as Browning's ÔPied Piper of Hamelin.Õ It is nevertheless true that no English author, with the exception of Hood, has produced such a body of excellent rhymed mirth as Barham; and that, if his humour is less refined than Hood's, and his gaiety not equally purified and ennobled by being dashed with tears, he excels his rival as a narrative poet. He may, indeed, be said to have prescribed the norm in our language for humorous narrative in irregular verse, which can now hardly be composed without seeming to imitate him." -[DNB].
