        Libellulinae Europaeae descriptae ac depictae.

      - Lipsiae, Leopold Voss, 1840. Large-4to (315 x 235mm). pp. (4), 180, with 48 lithographed plates of which 46 beautifully handcoloured. Contemporary blind boards (cloth repair at head of spine). The most beautifully produced work on Dragon-flies. Toussaint de Charpentier (1779-1849) edited the second edition of Esper's beautifully illustrated classic on Lepidoptera, and wrote two superbly, by himself illustrated works, one on Orthoptera and another on Dragon-flies. The excellent plates are very detailed and finely handcoloured. The last two plain plates show anatomical details and a fossil Dragon-fly. According to Horn-Schenkling, 'Index Litt. Entomologicae' (1928), the work is rare. An unusually clean copy.Nissen ZBI, 874; Horn & Schenkling 3367; Junk, Rara I, p. 86. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

William Thackeray was an English novelist of the 19th century. He is famous for his satirical works, particularly Vanity Fair, a panoramic portrait of English society. Thackeray saw himself as writing in the realistic tradition, and distinguished his work from the exaggerations and sentimentality of Dickens. Some later commentators have accepted this self-evaluation and seen him as a realist, but others note his inclination to use eighteenth-century narrative techniques, such as digressions and direct addresses to the reader, and argue that through them he frequently disrupts the illusion of reality. The school of Henry James, with its emphasis on maintaining that illusion, marked a break with Thackeray's techniques.

Opera completa. (Bibliografia: Gresse IV, 406). Edizione originale in ottimo stato di conservazione. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A charming and colorful folk-art depiction of George and Martha Washington at their home at Mount Vernon

n.p., c. 1840. 22.5" x 18". "Oil on canvas, 22.5"" x 18"", c. 1840, a folk art depiction of Mount Vernon including the mansion with George and Martha Washington standing at bottom right gesturing toward the view of the Potomac. Mild crazing, cleaned and relined some years ago, housed in A gilt frame, One small repaired tear in the branches of one tree, plus possible restoration to shrubbery in the lower left corner. Overall a bright and cheery painting.A superb folk art depiction of George and Martha Washington at their beloved Mount Vernon. Likely undertaken by an itinerant painter in the early to mid-nineteenth century, satisfying the growing demand for Washington-related iconography in the decades following his death in 1799. In this image, George and Martha Washington stand in front of their Mt. Vernon home. The President and First Lady appear in the right foreground, arm-in-arm, while the General gestures towards a pathway leading to the entrance to their home, extending his welcome. Small sailing boats and a three-masted ship float along the Potomac. Six people (visitors, workers or family members) are depicted, as well. "

Preston's first impressions were gainedunder unfortunate circumstances. He arrived at Quebec in February 1827,was in Montreal during the riot that precipitated the rebellion in thatprovince, and reached Kingston during the height of the excitement overthe outbreak in Toronto under William Lyon Mackenzie. For the rest of hisstay he was employed in Toronto. His bias appears in his criticism of the stagnant' British colonies as compared to the vigorous life of theUnited States, while the emergence of vigorous qualities among the secondgeneration of Canadians is deprecated on the ground that young Canadianswould be far better employed in agriculture or business than inover-crowding the professions and becoming competitors for publicemployment. It was Preston's view that Toronto society was pretentious.(Story). His work in the government service in Toronto 1837-1839;descriptions of the chief towns, politics, economics, business, publicworks, land grants, condition of the Indians, settlers, etc.. Book.         Katagami Japanese Stencil

Circa 1840, Japan - A Japanese Mulberry Paper Stencil (25 x 41 cm sheet size), depicting Vine Leaves and Gourds, retaining the original blue dye meticulously applied by the late Edo dyers 1800-1840; a rare example in excellent condition. The stencils are made of two or more layers of handmade Mulberry paper laminated together, which is hardened and waterproofed with persimmon juice. A matrix of raw silk threads are laid between the layers of Mulberry paper for reinforcement. Many of the more delicately designed stencils are extremely fragile once cut, leaving insufficient paper to hold them together, consequently the silk threads support the floating designs and are so fine that no mark is left when the dye is applied through the stencil. An exceptional survival of a used coloured stencil in fine condition as left by the 19th Century Edo craftsmen.         A NEW PICTURE OF PHILADELPHIA, OR THE STRANGER'S GUIDE TO THE CITY AND ADJOINING DISTRICTS WITH A PLAN OF THE CITY, AND MAP OF ITS ENVIRONS

Philadelphia: H.S. Tanner, Jr.; New York: T.R. Tanner, 1840. 156pp., plus one folding map, "A Map of Philadelphia and Adjacent Country: 1840," 11 x 14 3/4 inches. 12mo. Original brown cloth boards, stamped in blind and gilt. A very good copy. Despite the title, there is only one map. It shows the city and its western suburbs in an arc, from Chester in the South to Norristown in the West, to Andalusia in the north. The map is probably an updated version of the map with the same title published separately by Tanner in 1826, which is described by Rumsey (3014): "The non geological version of the Troost map...Tanner published this map in two forms: colored geologically to accompany Tanner's publication of Gerard Troost's GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF THE ENVIRONS OF PHILADELPHIA, Philadelphia, 1826, and...as a [pocket] map of Philadelphia and adjacent country." To Rumsey's description we can add this third format, as an accompaniment to Tanner's 1840 guide to the city of Philadelphia.

Radjatarangini: Histoire des rois du Kachmir [Rajatarangini: History of the Kings of Kashmir]

Paris: Imprimerie royale (volume 3: Imprimerie nationale), 1840-1852. Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good. The first Western and second-ever publication of the great Kashmiri historical epic, the Rajatarangini, written by the Brahmin Kalhana in the middle of the 12th century. A very scarce and attractive complete set of the first printing of this edition. Three volumes: [vi] xxiv, 584; [iv] 640; [iv] xvi, 723. Published as part of the series Memoires; textes orientaux et traductions publies par la Societe asiatique de Paris. Individual volume titles as follow: Volume 1. Texte sanscrit des six premiers livres et notes [Sanskrit text and notes on the first six books]. Volume 2. Traduction; esquisse geographique et ethnographique du Kachmir ancien et moderne; examen critique des six primiers livres [Translation with geographic and ethnographic sketch of ancient and modern Kashmir, with a critique of the first six books]. Volume 3: Traduction, e claircissements historiques et chronologiques relatifs aux septieme et huitieme livres [Translation and historical and chronological explanation of the seventh and eighth books]. The northern Indian realm of Kashmir was an important center of Hinduism and later of Buddhism, and both subjects are treated in the Rajatarangini, making it an important source for the study of the history of the two religions. The original text of the Rajatarangini consists of eight books. The first three books trace the history of Kashmir from the legendary the times of the Hindu deity Krishna to the ninth century. In the remaining five books, Kalhana recounts the history from the Utpala dynasty (beginning in 855 a.d.) to Kalhana's own time. As an innovative historian, Kalhana drew upon written records, oral histories of the royal courts, and historical inscriptions carved on temples and statues. In the mid-1830s, the Calcutta Baptist Mission Press undertook a project to print the ancient Sanskrit epics for the first time, including an edition of the first six books of the Rajatarangini. Anthony Troyer, a British captain with a talent for languages, acquired a copy of the Calcutta edition and returned with it to Europe in 1835. Over the next five years, he corrected that edition and then reprinted it in Sanskrit with copious notes in French, which were published as volume one of this edition. Troyer's second volume included a translation of the first six books into French (apparently the first European translation of Kalhana's history). He had planned to provide a translation of books seven and eight at the same time, but the manuscript he requested from India went missing and other events conspired to delay publication until 1852. Volume three, which, due to the delay, is often missing from the set, is entirely devoted to a French translation of the final two books of Kalhana's text. Very good in half morocco and marbled paper-covered boards. Spine in six compartments with gilt titles. Wear to bottom edges; old paper shelf label on spines, and stamp of an Arabic or Persian library on title pages. Minor foxing to pages, but generally clean and bright.

Archive of Papers Pertaining to Miles Rock, Chief of the Guatemala Boundary Commission, and his efforts to Demarcate and Resolve the Guatemala - Mexico Boundary Controversy, 1883-1897

No Binding. Very Good. Manuscript archive consisting of 119 manuscript letters, memoranda, minutes, letter copy book, totaling approximately 526 pages, plus manuscript map, and other materials. The present archive of correspondence, papers, journals and other materials relate to the work of Miles Rock (1840-1901), as Chief of the Guatemala Boundary Commission, to resolve the dispute between Guatemala and Mexico regarding the boundary of the two countries, conflict in the disputed territories of Chiapas and Soconuso almost resulted in an armed conflict between the two countries. The two countries decided to have the dispute arbitrated by the United States. Rock was instrumental in Guatemala's retention of the department of Petén, today the country's largest department, Rocks efforts are comprehensively documented in a series of manuscript memoranda and minutes contained in the present archive. Mexico formerly the Viceroyalty of New Spain, declared itself independent from Spain on September 16, 1810. The Captaincy General of Guatemala, which consisted of the provinces of Guatemala, Chiapas, Cost Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, declared its independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. Shortly thereafter, Chiapas declared its aggregation to Mexico, but Guatemala refused to accept the incorporation of Chiapas into Mexico until 1882. Guatemala, along with Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, was annexed briefly by Mexico, from 1822-23, and between 1824 and 1838 the five states were members of the Federation of Central America. On December 7, 1877, a convention was signed by Guatemala and Mexico providing for a commission to survey their common boundary in two sectors: 1. From the vicinity of Ocos on the Pacific coast to Cerro de Izbul, and 2, from the Cerro de Izbul to the Yucatan Peninsula. The survey was never completed, but a treaty delimiting the Guatemala-Mexico boundary was signed on September 27, 1882. In Article 1 of the 1882 treaty, Guatemala renounced forever its rights to the state of Chiapas and its district of Soconuso and consequently considered the said territory to be an integral part of Mexico. Article 3 of the treaty contains the present delimitation of the Guatemala-Mexico boundary as clarified in the Rio Salinas sector by a convention signed on April 1, 1895. A protocol signed on September 14, 1883, provided for the organization of boundary commissions authorized by Article 4 of the 1882 treaty. By May 1899, the demarcation of the boundary with pillars or monuments was completed. In 1883, as a result of the protocol signed on September 14, 1883, Rock was hired by Guatemala as the Chief of its Boundary Commission. Rock was commissioned to locate the boundary. Astronomical stations were to be established along the line, and profile and topographical maps made. The longitude of Guatemala City was to be determined telegraphically by connecting with a point on the coast occupied by the U. S. hydrographic party under Lieut.-Commander Davis. Miles Rock was also commissioned by the Smithsonian Institution to collect notes on anthropology in the country through which the survey extends and to photograph whatever archaeological ruins met with during the course of the survey. Rock discovered previously unknown ruins on a basin of the Lagartero River, a tributary of the Chiapas. The present papers result from Rock's work surveying and demarcating the boundary which today is approximately 598 miles long. It follows three parallels, three geodesic lines, including one meridian, and the courses of the Rio Suchiate, Rio Salinas, and Rio Usumacinta. The boundary is demarcated by rivers or pillars through its entire length. Miles Rock (1840-1901) was born at Ephrata, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, October 10, 1840, and died on January 29, 1901. During his boyhood Rock attended the public schools of Ephrata, and

Erste Ausgabe. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
