Espositore Michele Parma. Volume primo

presso A. Ubicini, 1840. In 8, pp. X + (2) + 260. M. pl. coeva.

- - "The significance of Henle's book lies in its long opening essay 'Von den Miasmen und Contagien,' in which Henle formulated, on the basis of deductive reasoning, his conviction that living organisms were the cause of contagious and infectious diseases. Drawing upon a wide body of work performed by other researchers on the origin of infectious diseases, such as Bassi's recent demonstration of the parasitical nature of muscardine disease of silkworms, Henle argued that infectious agents had to be organic in nature, since they appeared to multiply from the moment of entering the body (a statement supported by the fact that a certain period of incubation usually precedes the outbreak of disease), and only organic life has the property of growth. The fact that infectious agents could be destroyed by heat and disinfectants also suggested their animate nature. Henle assumed that each infectious disease had its own etiology, but realized that such views would be difficult to prove; he therefore proposed that an agent constantly found in association with a particular disease be isolated and tested in its isolated state to see whether it could produce the disease. 'This approach to the proof of the germ theory Henle communicated to his pupil Robert Koch and was, forty years later, to become one of the cornerstones of classical bacteriology under the name of "Koch's postulates" ' Foster - "He laid down postulates on the aetiological relation of microbes to disease which became fundamentals of bacteriology." Long - - Foster, Medical Bacteriology, pp. 8-9; Bulloch, History of Bacteriology, 163-65; G.Rosen, Henle on miasmata and contagia. In Bull. Hist. Med. 1938, 907; Howard-Jones, Frascatoro & Henle. Hist. 1977, 61-68; Sigerist, Große Ärzte, 314-320. - - Brock, Milestones in Microbiology, pp.76-79; Garrison-Morton 2533; Norman 1051; Waller 4336 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

This narrative covers the transactions and events of the ship "Leander" in 1836 including a controversial business arrangement. This narrative documents the 1836 voyage of the brig. "Leander" under Captain Richardson, to Rio for a cargo of Coffee, then to Marseilles, France, where it was consigned to Rabaud Brothers. Andrew Belknap was their agent. Beginning May 10, 1836 the letters detail financing, shipping, receiving and disposition of cargo. The ship "Leander" (A 212 ton brig.) carried flour and sugar to Rio. Parker (agent for Birckhead & Co.) shipped ice aboard the ship, paying port charges in exchange for freight costs, and Richardson shipped sperm candles, to be sold by their agent in Rio. Further letters cover cost and logistical concerns for shipping and receiving 500,000 pounds of coffee. Leander departed Boston on May 20, and a detailed invoice and bill of lading for the coffee was forwarded to Rabaud Brothers on July 10, along with a note stating that they had drawn 12,000 pounds sterling from their British agent to finance the venture. The "Leander" and her cargo of coffee departed Rio on July 20, but it turned out the 12,000 pounds sterling was not enough to cover the expense. A second, smaller invoice was issued. The merchants offered ship owner Richardson the option of assuming debt as an investment, and they assured him the profits from the sale of the sperm candles would be forwarded in due time. However, the Leander ran into trouble and the cargo was lost. The letter dated September 25, 1838, makes it apparent that Parker and Birckhead failed to pay their shares. More letters follow from Belknap and Rabaud Bros., demanding payment of 18,244.20 francs from Birckhead & Co. Birckhead claimed they never saw the bill and that the investment was made by Parker.

Contemp. blindstamped cloth with gilt title to spine. Only edition. One of the best English 19th-c. accounts of Arabia and the Gulf. Wellsted's short career was almost entirely devoted to the surveying of the Red Sea, Arabia and Oman, undertaken on a number of expeditions between 1830 and 1837. On board the surveying ship Palinurus he was the first European to set foot in the interior of Oman. Starting late in 1835 from the easternmost point of Oman, Wellsted made his way westward through the Ja`alan region to the Wahibah Sands and then struck north up the Wadi Batha to Samad. There he was joined by Lieutenant F. Whitelock, also of the Indian Navy, who had set out from Muscat later. Together they reached Nazwa, the ancient capital of Oman, and climbed the lower slopes of the Jabal al-Akhdhar, in central Oman. In January 1836 they arrived on the Al-Batinah coast and then turned west, recrossing the Hajar mountains and emerging on the edge of the Dhaharah, the rocky steppe that stretches west toward the Rub` al-Khali. - Bindings rubbed; spines rebacked. Interior somewhat foxed as common. Removed from the Worcester Public Library. Rare; the Peter Hopkirk copy fetched £3,500 at Sotheby's (Oct 14, 1998, lot 1192).         View of the the Country round Hobart Town in Van Dieman's Land; reduced on zinc by G. Scharf from a drawing by Lycett in the collection of Professor Buckland at Oxford

Charles Hullmandel, London 1840 - Lithograph on paper, 225 x 827 mm.; mounted, and in a handsome nineteenth century frame. A rare and most attractive panorama of Hobart, prepared from a drawing by the famous convict artist Joseph Lycett and possibly based on earlier drawings by G. W. Evans, the deputy surveyor. Joseph Lycett (c.1775-1828) was convicted of larceny and transported to New South Wales for 14 years, arriving on the General Hewitt in 1814. He had been trained as a portrait and miniature painter in Staffordshire, so his services as a professional artist were much in demand in the early years of the colony.Soon after arrival Lycett started working for the Sydney publisher and print maker Absalom West, and was then appointed artist to Major-General Macquarie, Governor of New South Wales. Impressed with Lycett's talents, Macquarie sent three of his drawings to Earl Bathurst, Secretary for the Colonies, who soon after granted a pardon to the artist. Lycett left Sydney in 1822 and whilst living in London produced most of the Australian subjects for which he is now celebrated. This fine lithograph is based on an original drawing and was a commission by Professor Buckland, an Oxford academic and a geologist and palaeontologist. "A letter dated 17 January 1840 from Professor Buckland to the botanist Robert Brown confirms both the date and his ownership of the drawing: 'Scharf is drawing for me on zinc a reduction of my large drawing by Lycett of Hobart Town & I am anxious to get the trees correct. I will thank you to call at 14 Francis Street, Tottenham Court Road - where the drawing now is and give a word or 2 of advice'." (McPhee, Joseph Lycett, p. 271)The lithographer of the print, George Scharf, had studied lithography in Germany before enlisting in the British Army. Later he worked in London with several lithographic publishers including Rudolph Ackermann and Charles Hullmandel. Hullmandel, who printed this panorama, had his own lithographic press: "Hullmandel's refinement of the lithographic process achieved greater subtlety and graduations of tone, as well as the ability to create a soft wash of colour" (McPhee). This fine panoramic view of Hobart is a superbly executed and beautiful lithograph; rare in any form, this is an example of the state with the artist's name reading "Lycet" and "Profefsor" misspelled. In remarkably good condition it is in a handsome nineteenth-century timber frame. Crease to the upper left hand side.
