        Camp of the Gros Ventres

1840. First Edition . BODMER, Karl. Camp of the Gros Ventres of the Prairies on the Upper Missouri. Paris: Arthus Bertrand (Imprimé de Bougeard), [1840]. Original hand-colored aquatint, plate impression measures 17 by 13 1/2 inches; window matted, entire piece measures 23 by 20 inches. $1800.Fine hand-colored folio plate (number 38), first state, from the magnificent Atlas volume for Maximilian Wied-Neuwied's Travels in the Interior of North America (1839-43).MaximilianÂ’s monumental work was originally published in German (1839-41); a French translation followed in 1840-43 and an English translation in 1843. A picture-atlas of eighty-one plates (48 folios and 33 “vignettes”) after paintings by Karl Bodmer was issued in Paris, and accompanied all three of these editions. This Atlas is now regarded as one of the most comprehensive and memorable visual surveys of the western territories ever produced. Unlike some other painters of the American West, Bodmer tried not to romanticize his subjects, but show them as they really were. “BodmerÂ’s watercolors are perhaps the most accurate works of art ever made of American Indians during the 19th century. His attention in detail to beadwork, personal symbols, clothing, accoutrements, and facial expression make these portraits precious documents of a lost world” (Robert Moore). This superb hand-colored aquatint depicts the events of August 5th, 1833, when Prince MaximilianÂ’s 60-foot keelboat Flora anchored opposite a Gros Ventre encampment at the mouth of the Judith River. The camp contained over 200 tipis and the boat was soon surrounded by visitors looking to trade. MaximilianÂ’s party was far outnumbered and the situation became somewhat tense. In his journal entry for that day, the Prince noted, “If it was their intention to treat us in a hostile manner, there was no way for us to escape; and how easily might the most trifling dispute with these rude men lead to a breach, by which fifty whites, in the power of eight or nine hundred Indians, would have had no chance. They were therefore treated with much apparent confidence and familiarity, and everything went off very well.” This wonderful print is folio number 38 (with the requisite three separate imprint statements, captions in German, French, and English, and the artistÂ’s embossed stamp: “C. Bodmer Direct”). First state, without date in the imprint statement. Ruud, 202-03. See Howes M443a; Wagner-Camp 76; Streeter 1809. Hand-coloring vivid and colors true, faint “speckled” foxing (not affecting the quality of the image). A very desirable and rare Bodmer, in extremely good condition.

Blokhuis, verkoopt men manufacturen. Bakker.Tussen Beide Markten anno 2015Prijs: ?925,-.

Group of large autograph leaves of reminiscences and reflections, unsigned, (John, 1801-1870, Painter and Sculptor)

1840 - and apparently unpublished, in his fine hand, including a striking and accomplished pencil drawing, 'Sir Francis Chantrey's visit to see my Model' (of 'Adam and Eve lamenting over the dead body of Abel', exhibited in 1823), together 12 sides on 10 sheets18" x 13¾", loose in a contemporary portfolio, no place, no date but watermark Wood was the son of a drawing master in Whitechapel. He painted portraits (including Peel and Earl Grey) and his historical and literary subjects had an assurance and power of invention which brought him a great reputation at the time. His reminiscences are under various headings, some dramatic - "A life trial or adventure", "Scene - My father's house in Whitechapel", - and some reflective, "A Tableau of the Past". They begin with his first day as an apprentice, at Rudolf Ackermann's in the Strand. Believing he would be engaged in drawing and design, he was set to copy a manuscript on to a stone for printing, and in bitter disappointment walked home, to explain all to his parents. Studying at Henry Sass's school, he was given some clay and a modelling tool, with which he made the subject of the present drawing. He tells of Chantrey's only adverse comment, whereupon he seized some string, decapitated Abel and at once made the neck somewhat shorter, while Chantrey looked on. Then at the R.A. schools, he won the gold medal for painting, and he tells in affectionate terms how Lawrence, P.R.A., interviewed him and advised him to take lodgings in the West End. Wood's father "expostulated" but did not hold him back. The last four sides tell of his intense gratitude to Providence, and his pleasure that his father lived to know of his success.

Publisher's original dark red-brown diaper cloth, vertically-ribbed, with gilt spine lettering (imprint present); arabesque design in blind to the boards. Average wear to extremities; spines sunned; light foxing and occasional edge-darkening to plates. VG.. Three volumes: [2], 331, [1, blank], [4, ads] pp.; [2], 307, [1, blank] pp.; [2], 315, [1, blank] pp. 24 engraved plates by George Cruikshank. 8vo. 8-1/4" x 5" Volumes I and II of the Bentley's fictitious "new edition," printed from the plates of the Second Edition, with Vol III of the 1840 publication (this volume entirely reset and printed by Schulze). Given the matched casings, we presume the sheets were sent by the publisher to bindery at the same time and so sold as a set in 1840. Tillotson mentions having seen only one other copy of the New Edition, at the London Library, rebound and lacking the advertisements; Smith notes that it is "[v]ery scarce" and adds that the 1840 issue is also "quite scarce."

Narrative of an Expedition to the Polar Sea

1840. First Edition . (WRANGEL, Ferdinand von.) SABINE, Edward, editor. Narrative of an Expedition to the Polar Sea, in the Years 1820, 1821, 1822, & 1823. Commanded by Lieutenant, now Admiral, Ferdinand von Wrangell, of the Russian Imperial Navy. London: James Madden, 1840. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter green morocco. $1500.First edition in English of this report of a Russian naval expedition in the Arctic Sea, with a large folding map of Northeastern Siberia.Von Wrangel (whose name also appears in transliteration as Vrangel or Wrangell) headed a Russian government expedition to survey the coast eastward from the Kolyma River and northward in the East Siberian Sea for new land. The expedition was able to establish that north of Cape Shelagsky was only open sea, and not land; charted the Siberian coast from the Indigirka River to Kolyuchinskaya Bay; and collected data on climate, geomagnetics, glaciers, natural resources and population. “These explorations seemed to confirm the existence of an open and navigable sea deep in the Arctic” (Hill 1916). Von Wrangel went on to become the Russian governmentÂ’s chief administrator of Russian settlements in North America, and later president of the Russian-American Company and the Minister of the Russian Navy. He opposed the 1867 sale of Alaska to the United States. This edition is a translation from the 1839 German edition “with some abridgement of text, and the omission of meteorological tables in appendix” (Arctic Bibliography 18994). Sabine was himself an arctic explorer, having served in expeditions under John Ross and Edward Parry; the text of this edition was translated by SabineÂ’s wife Elizabeth. The Russian edition, with the title Expedition Along the North Siberian Coast and in the Arctic Sea during the Years 1820-1824, was not published until 1841. Fitzgerald 760. Ex-library, with library bookplate. Bookseller ticket.Light soiling and finger marks to text, with embrowning of preliminary and concluding leaves, including folding map. Map backed in silk.       1840 - [a handsome copy] With Illustrations by George Cattermole and Hablot Browne. [In Three Volumes.] London: Chapman and Hall, 1840/-41/-41. Original blind-stamped purple-brown cloth with gilt-decorated spines and front covers. First Edition in book form of THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP and of BARNABY RUDGE. After NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, Dickens decided that all his future novels would be issued as loosely-connected tales presented by one Master Humphrey; furthermore, serialization would be weekly, and with illustrations printed within the text rather than on separate plates. MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK was initially issued in 88 weekly (and also grouped as 20 monthly) parts; the three volumes in cloth were accordingly published separately, at intervals of about seven months. Simultaneous with the publication of Vol III, MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK was divided and issued as two separate one-volume novels -- at which time Dickens gave up on the experiment, and reverted to the old formula (monthly serial parts, with separate plates) for MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT and subsequent novels.~This set is in the primary (and usual) binding, with the gilt front cover clock whose hands point to the appropriate volume number. Subscribers to serial parts could have them bound into this "original publisher's cloth" at a multitude of places, so variations of endpapers and edges are many. We have seen copies of MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK with several variations of endpapers: marbled, light coffee-brown, plain white, and (as here) pale yellow. The page edges are plain (some copies with marbled endpapers also have marbled edges).~The condition of the volumes is very good-plus: there is very slight wear at a few extremities (bottom edges) and some of the endpapers have minor cracking, but there is less than the usual fading of the spines, the cover gilt remains nice and bright, and there is scarcely any foxing within.       - Hocken, Bibliography . New Zealand, 34 note (p. 507); Williams, Bibliography of printed Maori 44 (citing Bleek, p. 40 & Hocken, p. 507). Untrimmed and partly unopened copy of an early Maori edition printed in New Zealand, containing the beginning of the Book of Daniel (1-7: Nebuchadnezzar's dream and Daniel's dream) and the whole of the Book of Jonah (1-4: Jonah and the whale), translated into Maori and printed and published by the missionary press in the town of Paihia on the northernmost island of New Zealand. A nearly identical edition, also published in 1840 does not include Daniel 7 (hence "e witu" [= seven] in the present title and "e ono" [= six] in the other). The mission had been established there in 1826 and the press produced its first work, selected epistles from the New Testament, in 1835.Waterstains throughout and several small holes in the outer margins of the least leaf, likely already present before printing. Still a reasonable copy, wholly untrimmed. One of the earliest examples of printing in the Maori language, from New Zealand's first successful printing office.

9 volumes, octavo (200 x 122 mm). Contemporary marbled boards, spines ruled gilt, gilt lettered paper labels, top edges stained red. Ownership inscription of Malikow Michael Weltzien dated 1841 to first free endpaper, with his occasional contemporary underlining and marginalia in ink, bookplate of August Weltzien to front pastedowns. Volume I neatly rebacked preserving the original spine, two spine labels replaced with gilt lettered cloth labels to style; spine ends, corners and board edges somewhat worn, marbled paper of the last 4 volumes slightly different. Some marginal dampmarking, occasional offset and spotting; withal a very good set. First edition of Savigny's massive work - over 4000 pages long - which demonstrated the great and living unity of much of the Roman law. His earlier writings, with their emphasis on the Volksgeist and their application of the historical method, had expressed his reaction, influenced by romanticism, against the natural law theories of the French Revolution and of liberalism generally. In his dogmatic teaching, however, he not only affirmed the doctrines of eighteenth-century rationalist jurisprudence but made these doctrines the basis of his system. The System is "based on fundamental notions of German natural law theory as well as on Kant's legal philosophy. Within the framework of these categories, Savigny transcended Roman law in many respects, adapting it to modern requirements or developing new solutions, many of which have become influential in German and other legal science; for example, his doctrines of contract and corporation, and particularly his system of private international law - which, like the systems of Story and Mancini, counts among the classic theories in this branch of law." (IESS 14, p. 22).

SIERRA LEONE / MANUMISSION OF SLAVES: Map of Part of the Western Coast of Africa extending from the Isles de Loss to Sherboro Island. Particularly Exhibiting the Discoveries lately made to the N.E. of Sierra Leone by Surgeon O’Beirne and Major Ling. Compiled from original Documents in the Colonial Office.

London, [circa ]. 1840 - Steel engraving with original outline hand colour, on 2 sheets joined with original linen tape (Excellent, exceptionally magnificent original outline colour, a stellar example), 65.5 x 97 cm (26 x 38 inches). James Wyld the Younger’s important map of Sierra Leone, featuring the tracks of British expeditions into the interior, a stellar example featuring unusually magnificent original hand colour. This gorgeous, large format and historically important work was perhaps the best known early map of the British Colony of Sierra Leone, home to one of the Empire’s most curious socio-political experiments. The map embraces what are today northern Sierra Leone and the southeastern extremity of Guinea. It shows that while the coastlines are mapped with trigonometric accuracy (by the Royal Navy), the European knowledge of the interior is uneven, with some corridors having been recently explored and well mapped, while adjacent areas are left blank, being completely enigmatic. The area of British colonial control, around the capital Freetown, is outlined in yellow, and features numerous villages and roads, as well as the routes of ‘proposed roads’ into the interior. Beyond, the country is shown to still be under the control of the named indigenous nations, with each of their territories outlined in it own bright hue. Interestingly, the map marks the routes of four major British exploring expeditions into the interior. The dotted ochre line marks the route of Thomas Masterman Winterbottom, who in 1794 followed a route in the north, from southern Guinea to the city of Timbo. The green line follows the 1821 outward and return routes of Brian O’Beirne, an army surgeon, pursued from Port Locca up to Timbo. The red line follows both of Major Gordon Laing’s 1822 expeditions, the first being from Freetown to Malacoore (Guinea) and the second from Freetown to Fembo. Finally, the yellow line follows Jack Le Bore’s route from Malacoore to Fembo. The map is replete with interesting explorers’ annotations on the nature of the countryside. The Sierra Leone Experiment -Britain’s 1807 decision to ban the international slave trade left it with many new responsibilities and problems. Not surprisingly, slave traders did not accept the ban, and the Royal Navy had to expend vast resources enforcing a blockade of the West African coast to enforce the edict (not always successfully). Britain was also left with the charge to care for large numbers of free former slaves who had no place to go. Britain was under pressure to develop new bases to suppress the slave trade along the West African coast, while creating new colonies specifically designed to accommodate displaced freed slaves. Just as the United States would develop Liberia, from the 1820s, to accommodate free slaves, Britain developed Sierra Leone. While Sierra Leone’s coasts had been frequented by Europeans since the 15th Century, until the end of the 1700s there was no permanent European presence in the region, which was still controlled by its traditional indigenous nations. In 1792, the British Sierra Leone Company founded Freetown and the Sierra Leone colony to accommodate displaced ex-slaves, in advance of the 1807 slave trade ban. After 1807, this mandate attained greater urgency. Freetown was ramped up as naval base, and an elaborate scheme was developed to settle and employ thousands of former slaves.
