James Fenimore Cooper announces his impending arrival to his publishers, so "that the printers may be in readiness, as I desire to return home by the 3d prox. in order to assist in making Martin Van Buren, President of the U. States of America."

New York, October 16, 1840. 8.25" x 9". "James Fenimore Cooper Autograph Letter Signed written aboard the U.S.S. Macedonia off the Battery [New York], October 16, 1840; one page, 8.25" x 9". The letter is gently toned, with bold ink and has been tipped into a slight larger sheet. Expected folds. Docketed at top left by the recipient. Accompanied by a fine engraving of Cooper, 4.5"" x 7.25"" laid into a page, along with documented provenance as noted below. Cooper is writing to his publishers, Lea and Blanchard of Philadelphia:""Gentlemen,I sail for New York to-morrow in this ship. We shall probably get in on Monday, and I hope to be in Philadelphia by the 20th, when I wish to finish printing Mercedes, without delay. I write that the printers may be in readiness, as I desire to return home by the 3d prox. In order to assist in making Martin Van Buren, President of the U. States of America.Yours in haste,J. Fenimore Cooper""Cooper, a prolific writer, had published his History of the Navy of the United States of America and a book on the USS Constitution the year before. A few months prior to writing the letter offered here, Cooper had published the final installment of his Leatherstockings series, featuring his most famous character Natty Bumppo, the central figure of The Last of the Mohicans. In Mercedes of Castile, the book referenced in this letter, Cooper tells the story of Christopher Columbus, marking his literary return to the sea, his first love.It is important to note that Cooper is writing from aboard the USS Macedonian, an active Navy frigate carrying 36 guns assigned to the West Indies squadron as a deterrent to Caribbean pirates. Cooper had served in the Navy and dedicated much of his life to recording its history. His work as a historian as well as his political connections would have given him access to use of naval frigate for his personal travel. The Macedonian was assigned to scouting the Caribbean seas and was likely on its way to another tour. Cooper is anxious to return to the campaign trail, as he notes in his letter. Despite his efforts to get President Van Buren re-elected, William Henry Harrison would prove victorious. Although letters by Cooper are not uncommon, those referencing his literary work in any way appear with far less frequency. The letter offered here is particularly desirable as it evidences his political interests. The last Cooper letter to appear at auction with literary content sold in excess of $7475 in 2013. Provenance: This item was recently discovered in an extra illustrated volume of "History of the City of New York" by Mary L. Booth, New York W. R. C. Clark, 1867. Originally two volumes, the monumental task of expanding the work to 21 volumes by none other than Emery E. Childs esquire of New York City. In volume 1 of this work exists a lovely india ink Drawing of Mary L. Booth along with a notation "presented by her to E E C" in pencil. Next to the title page we find an original letter of Booth to Childs dated April 4, 1872 " I am in receipt of your favor of the 4th inst., and am grateful to hear that you are taking the trouble to illustrate my History of the City of New York in the manner you describe. I shall be happy to see you, should you favor me with a callas I am usually in my office during business hours and should be pleased to facilitate your Enterprise by any means in my power"It is assumed that the book took several years to assemble at which point, assumedly through Childs, it made its way to Senator Charles B. Farwell of Chicago who took the seat of John A. Logan in 1887. Farwell had an extensive library that fortunately survived the great Chicago fire in 1871 having been housed in his Lakeside home. In the American Bibliopolist of November 1871 there is an article about the devastation to libraries caused by the tragedy . "Mr C. B. Farwell's library is also fortunately far out from the city, at his country house, and is safe, The same remark will also apply to the extensive collection of books and curiosities belonging to Mr. E. E. Childs." This establishes the Chicago connection between Childs and Farwell. That these letters were preserved for over 140 years and have never been on the market for that period is remarkable on many levels. It is the state of being wedged in these volumes that also account for what is mostly the pristine state of preservation."

Alfred Guesdon was born in Nantes, June the 13th 1808. Once he finished his classical studies, in 1829, he went to Paris, to study architecture as a pupil of Antoine Martin Garnaud. Starting from 1830, he devoted himself to experimentations and researches on the art of lithography, especially on historical subjects, views and landscapes he took from his many trips around Europe. The distinctiveness of these views is the fact that they are the first representations of the cities from above, realized on board of an air balloon.

L’Atlante Corografico, come consuetudine all’epoca, uscì a dispense. Dimensioni 900 610mm

n.p., Portsmouth, N.H. 1840 - 34 pp. Signed by the author, the grandson of the subject. Includes one page manuscript (once bound in) called "Description of Gov. Langdon" by a contemporary of his who also remarks that he had heard of a [this] pamphlet written by Langdon's grandson. Thus two contemporary descriptions of one of the Founding Fathers. John Langdon (1741-1819 ) was a vigorous supporter of the Revolution, sat on the New Hampshire committee of correspondence and a nonimportation committee. In 1774 he participated in the seizure and confiscation of British munitions from the Portsmouth fort. He had "contracts to build ships for the Continental navy, including the Ranger, which Captain John Paul Jones made famous during the war. In addition, Langdon worked to raise manpower and bring in French supplies for Continental forces. He not only helped to finance, but, as commander of a militia unit, he accompanied General John Stark's summer 1777 expedition that contributed to American victory at Saratoga. He was speaker of the New Hampshire legislature from 1777 to 1781. elected president of New Hampshire in 1788, Langdon resigned a year later to accept a seat in the U.S. Senate, which he held from 4 March 1789 until 3 March 1801. Shortly after arriving in New York he was elected the first president pro tempore of the Senate. In the early 1790s Langdon voted consistently with the Federalists, supporting Alexander Hamilton's plans to fund the national debt and establish a national bank" (ANBO). He returned later to New Hampshire and was elected to the State house and from 1805 to 1812 with the exception of one year, he was Governor of New Hampshire.       , 1840. 1840. POE, Edgar Allan. TALES OF THE GROTESQUE AND ARABESQUE. Two Volumes. Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1840. Small octavos, fine-grained brown full- levant morocco leather with gilt borders on covers & gilt-tooled spines; marbled endpapers, top edges gilt; 243 pages & 228 pages. Binding by Alfred Matthews. First Edition. with page 213 correctly numbered rather than having "321"; with the "i" in "ing" present on the thirteenth sentence from the bottom of page 219; and with the hyphen at the end of the sixth sentence up on the same page located in its proper place. A front blank page in Vol. 1 is lacking. [BAL 16133]. John W. Robertson's bibliography of Poe (which gives the best collation) states that the earliest issue has page 213 misnumbered. Only 750 copies of the first edition were published- contains stories like "William Wilson" and "MS. Found In A Bottle." Lea and Blanchard decided to print the book after the success of Poe's story "The Fall Of The House Of Usher." However, Poe was to receive no royalties except for 20 free leather-bound copies, of which only a few remain today. [Antic Hay Books had one of these copies several years ago, inscribed by Poe and with an unknown original poem]. From the distinguished collection of important 19th Century Literature of Charles B. Foote, with his personal bookplate on the front pastedown in each volume. Foote's collection was auctioned in 1894 and this item, which originally included an original prospectus of "The Stylus" with five lines written by Poe in pencil, was lot #210. Very Good (covers nice and professionally reattached by a notable bookbinder; little occasional scattered foxing). Enclosed in a handsome cloth & leather clamshell box. [See images]. $20,000.00.

(Mit einer typometrischen Karte des Wiener Umlandes). Linien-Kriegs-Schif.

[London: R. and E. Taylor], 1840. First edition. 4to., 59 pp., 2 leaves of plates. Later wrappers with printed labels on the front wrapper and spine. Extracted from Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Volume 130. Fine. Housed in a newly made pamphlet case of cloth-backed paper over boards, with printed labels on the upper cover and spine. Sir John F.W. Hershel (1792 - 1871) was the son of the renowned astronomer, Sir William Herschel. His university years showed him to be a gifted mathematician, resulting in his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society. After brief forays into legal studies and an academic career at Cambridge, he became his father's assistant late in 1816. His independent means allowed him to pursue his interests in the sciences; among them was the study of light. In the spring of 1831, he conducted a series of experiments on the light sensitivity of salts of platinum; his earlier experiments with hyposulphites to dissolve "muriate of silver" applied to those with platinum salts, brought him to the edge of codifying the photographic process. He shared the results of these experiments with his friends, David Brewster, Charles Babbage, and William Henry Fox Talbot. His enduring scientific pursuit was the study of light, and as the first to embrace photography as a scientific tool, he invented numerous processes. With the announcement of Daguerre's process on 22 January 1839, and Talbot's announcement within a few days, he made and fixed his own paper based photographs by 30 January 1839, and he had the foresight to reverse the negative to positive tones. Herschel presented his findings in a paper he read to the Royal Society on 14 March 1839, in which he stressed the superior qualities of hyposulphite of soda to common salt for the "fixing" of photographs. He withdrew his paper from publication out of consideration for his friend, Talbot, and only a brief abstract was published. In, On the Chemical Action of the Rays of Light..., his first full published paper on photography, he stresses the necessity of using achromatic lenses, he introduced the terms negative and positive into the nomenclature, he described a process for making direct positive photographs and both negative and positive photographs on glass, the superiority of silver bromide over other silvers salts, and he predicts full color photography, having made a color photograph of the spectrum in 1839, in which he was unable to "fix" the colors.WorldCat locates nine copies. Gernsheim - Incunabula of British Photographic Literature No. 1068. Roosens and Salu fail to list this.
