Mexico, 1837. "Texas Independence Issues. A Rare Mexican Imprint". Item #15898 Jean Pierre Purry was a Swiss entrepreneur promoting a settlement along the Savannah River in South Carolina. From Carolina.com: A lonely, cross-shaped monument of stone on the banks of the Savannah River marks the site of Purrysburg, an early Swiss settlement that eventually failed. In 1731, the King of England granted land on the Savannah River to Swiss colonizer Jean Pierre Purry. Hundreds of German speaking and French speaking Swiss colonists arrived with the dream of establishing a silk trade in the new colony. But malaria and other hardships proved fatal to the European colonists, and the settlement died a slow death. Purrysburg lingered on until the time of the American Revolution, serving as the first headquarters of the American army under Major General Benjamin Lincoln. After the Revolution, Purrysburg was granted a US Post Office that remained open until 1848, and the town could be found on many … [Click Below for Full Description]

Aesop
lithographed for the Bombay Native Education Society, 1837. Lithographed throughout. Approx. 7-3/4" x 6" (197 x 150 mm), title leaf plus 186 leaves, paginated in Marathi: [2], 14, 357, [1]; 184 lithograph illustrations (each approx. 54 x 72 mm) after woodcuts illustrating 184 fables; contemporary and likely original native maroon goat, 5 sets of double fillets on spine; minor cracks at spine ends, rear hinge with a 2" crack at the top; light overall wear; 2 gatherings extended; very good copy. A very rare book. OCLC locates 9 titles published by the Bombay Educational Society 1828-1837. The first, Anwari Sohili: a Paraphrase, in Persian, of the Fables of Pilpay, shows 8 locations in OCLC. All the others are found in 2 or fewer locations, and this one in only one: Albion College in Michigan. Not in COPAC. Not in the Carlson Collection at Creighton University. Not in the Heffelfinger Collection at Minneapolis Public. This appears to be the last production of the press. The text is based on Croxall's English translation. A note at the bottom of the first page of the table of contents notes that it was the 20th edition which was used, i.e. the London, 1810 edition. The numerous illustrations seem to follow the format of the small neat illustrations attributed to Elisha Kirkall in the 1810 edition; at least one cut in that edition is signed 'E. Dyas scul.' These Indian lithographs are far enough removed from those in the 1810 edition that they warrant their own inspection and appreciation. Not the first translation of Aesop into Marathi, as that distinction belongs to the 1809 T … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dickens, Charles
London: Chapman and Hall, 1837. Browne, Hablot Knight; Buss, Robert William; Seymo. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Good. Illustrated by Robert Seymour, Robert William Buss, and Hablot Knight Browne (Phiz). First edition in book form. Bound in 3/4 gilt stamped morocco recased over cloth with marbled boards and page edges. Binding is moderately rubbed and tight. Scattered foxing, mostly to illustrations, with some loss and old tape repairs to several pages. Still a very presentable copy of an early Dickens first edition. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club was originally published serially in twenty numbers, bound in nineteen monthly installments from April 1836 - November 1837. This first edition was published shortly after on November 17, 1837. The project was originally conceived by illustrator Robert Seymour, who envisioned a series of humorous stories about the adventures of amateur Cockney sportsmen. Chapman and Hall employed Dickens to create a cohesive narrative that provided a background story for the illustrations. However, the bold young writer purportedly wrote with little regard to the illustrations, even making suggestions for their alterations at times, much to Seymour's displeasure. After the second installment was completed, Seymour committed suicide and was replaced in the Pickwick project by Robert Buss. However, Dickens found Buss's work unfavorable, and Hablot Knight Browne, who would continue to illustrate many of Dickens' subsequent novels, took over as the Pickwick illustrator. Smith comments on the complicated history of Pickwick's illustration: "The … [Click Below for Full Description]

Very scarce. Foxing to plates but in better condition than usually seen. A large edition of this work, which has twenty five poetic and dramatic scenes designed and etched by David Scott. Scott was a Scottish historical painter. Collated, complete. 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' is Samuel Taylor Coleridge's longest major poem. It tells the tale of a sailor who narrates his story to a gentleman who is on his way to a wedding ceremony. The poem is laced with numerous narrative techniques such as personification and repetition to build various atmospheres throughout. It is said that James Cook's second voyage of the South Seas and the Pacific Ocean may have inspired this poem as Coleridge's tutor was an astronomer on Cook's flagship and had a good relationship with him. William Wordsworth noted that the poem was inspired when Coleridge, Wordsworth and his sister were walking through the Quantock Hills in Somerset. L'ouvrage comprend une grande carte dépliante de la régence d'Alger et deux vues panoramique dépliantes, l'une d'Alger, l'autre de Constantine. MONOGRAMS
each elaborately designed to be a unique mark of the owner, many in glowing colours, assembled by Mrs Wakelin, (b. 1837 or 1838, née Conway, later Mrs William Morter), nanny to the children of Imperial Crown Prince Friedrich (III) and 'Vicky', eldest daughter of Queen Victoria, from about 1860 till 1879, neatly cut from letters and envelopes received by Vicky from European and British Royalty and higher nobility, including Sweden, Denmark, the German States and Austria, about 15 are addresses such as Prussia House, S.W. or Frogmore, three are vignette photos including Ludwig II of Bavaria, over 200 items of which about 25 are duplicates, circa 1870 - a few small defects, some faint traces of gum expertly removed Particularly striking are the large designs of Crown Princess Victoria, with her and her husband's arms asymmetrically arranged, of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, and of Queen Louise of Denmark in a tall column. Occasionally the same design is found in varied colours or in black for mourning, as with the small AE within the garter for the Prince of Wales (Edward VII). The 1870s may be reckoned the high-water mark of these designs for variety and ingenuity.

BURROUGHS, John
BURROUGHS, JOHN. (1837-1921). American naturalist and essayist who influenced the American conservation movement. SP. ("John Burroughs at 'Slabsides'"). 1p. Large oblong 4to. (West Park), N.d. (after 1895). A sepia photograph of Burroughs sitting on the steps of his summer cabin Slabsides, signed and identified by Burroughs as such on the lower blank margin. Born on a farm in the Catskills, Burroughs was an ardent lover of nature who expressed his feelings through his writing. Burroughs' professional writing career began in 1860, with the publication of his essay Expression in the Atlantic Monthly. Editor James Russell Lowell initially thought it had been plagiarized from Ralph Waldo Emerson who was incorrectly credited as its author in subsequent publications. Encouraged by his close friend poet Walt Whitman, Burroughs published a collection of essays, Wake-Robin, in 1871 while working as a federal bank examiner in Washington, D.C. Burroughs' work combined observations of nature with philosophy, religion and literature and made him a popular figure during his day. Among his fans was Theodore Roosevelt who, after meeting him in 1889, became a close friend for the next three decades. Burroughs' essays also appeared in such collections as Locusts and Wild Honey, Squirrels and Other Fur-Bearers, Songs of Nature, Ways of Nature, and Camping and Tramping with Theodore Roosevelt. In 1873, Burroughs purchased a farm in the Hudson Valley town of West Park and built an estate called Riverby, where he continued to write and cultivate various crops. In 1895, he constructed Slabsides, … [Click Below for Full Description]
