KLEMM, Gustav Friedrich
1837. vi, 328 pp. 8vo, cont. half-sheep & marbled boards, flat spine gilt, green leather lettering piece on spine. Zerbst: G.A. Kummer, 1837.First edition of this valuable, detailed, and surprisingly scarce history of Church, public, and private collections of art, books, manuscripts, and natural history specimens (wunderkammern) in Germany from the medieval period to the present date. Klemm (1802-67), anthropologist and librarian of the Royal Library of Saxony, was also inspector of the royal collections of porcelain, and a member of many cultural organizations throughout Germany. According to the Encycl. Britannica, Klemm developed the concept of "culture." Following his death, the British Museum purchased his large collection of central European prehistoric antiquities. In this work, Klemm considers churches as the museums of the Middle Ages. As one might expect, the book is rich in bibliographic details. This work was one of the standard 19th-century guides to the subject.Fine and handsome copy.

Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards ornamented in blind (rebacked, retaining most of the original back-strip); pp. xvii, errata slip, 477, 12 (publisher's catalogue); wood-engraved frontispiece of Mount Ararat, four tinted lithographic plates, one engraved folding map; small marginal repair to map, which is a little brown-spotted, minimal spotting only here a nd there, a very good copy.First edition, scarce. Wilbraham was Captain of the Seventh Royal Fusiliers, attached to the British embassy in Tehran. A lull in duties in the summer of 1837 allowed him to visit "the interesting countries lying between the Caspian and the Black Sea", that is, Georgia and Armenia. After some intial observations on Persia and the Persians, the author recounts his travels from Tabriz to Yerevan (Erivan) and Tiflis (Tbilisi), thence across the Caucasus to Pyatigorsk (a "Russian Cheltenham"). Returning to Tbilisi, Wilbraham headed west, passing through Kars, and then south around the two lakes of the title, returning to Tabriz and finally to Tehran. En route he met Kurds, "Chechenses", Armenians, Russian notables, and various other groups, attended a Nestorian wedding, sampled the local wines, and generally enjoyed himself. A fascinating account of a region not often visited.#2105517
