        Pickwickian Illustrations.

8vo., sometine bound in patterned paper covered boards retaining the original gilt-lettered black paper label. 20 plates. A little loss to spine of wrappers, otherwise a very good clean set. First edition with the publisher's imprint on the first four plates. A scarce set of illustrations by William Heath who was the leading caricaturist, prolific alike in social and political satire, in London during the 1820s and early 1830s. "When on 1 January 1830 Thomas McLean, the leading purveyor of comic art, launched a monthly magazine of caricatures, available in plain and hand-coloured versions, called the Looking Glass, he advertised it as having been ?drawn and etched? by ?William Heath? for whom he acted as ?sole Publisher?. Clearly Heath's name was the selling point, yet after seven issues he was replaced by Robert Seymour. Perhaps McLean felt that Seymour's lithographs better expressed the new spirit of delicacy to which he was attuning himself. Or perhaps he had become exasperated by Heath's ?careless habits--drink, debts and unpunctuality? (a contemporary collector, quoted by George, Catalogue, 10.xciii). In any event, after 1830 Heath's output of caricatures declined rapidly. He concentrated instead on topographical illustration, such as his panorama of Dover (1836)." (ODNB). Notwithstanding McLean issued this series of Pickwickian Illustrations by Heath in 1837. Pickwick Papers, Dickens's first novel was a great success and many other artists, beyond the three official illustrators, created drawings without the approval of the author or publisher, sometimes for bootleg copies or hoping that ?Extra Plates? for the original issue would be included in later issues. The artists included, as here, William Heath, Alfred Henry Forrester ("Alfred Crowquill"), Thomas Onwhyn (who sometimes signed as "Sam Weller") and Thomas Sibson. Yale/Gimbel H1089

        MOBILE SHIPPING AND COMMERCIAL LIST

Mobile: Commercial Register and Patriot, 1837. [2]pp. printed in three columns on a folded folio sheet. Third page with an autograph letter, signed, from Toulmin, Hazard, and Company, commission merchants in Mobile. Addressed in manuscript on the fourth page and sent by Express Mail to New York at a 75-cent rate. Old folds. Some bleed-through from the manuscript letter onto the fourth page. Slight wear. Near fine. Excellent evidence, in a printed commercial list and accompanying manuscript letter, of the commerce between the agricultural South and the manufacturing North during the land and cotton boom which the write Joseph Baldwin dubbed "The Flush Times", about to come to an abrupt end in the Panic of 1837. The price list and manuscript letter are exemplary of the South's predicament in this era - rich in raw materials but dependent on the North for cash and manufacturing. The MOBILE SHIPPING AND COMMERCIAL LIST ran from late 1833 to early 1839, published every Saturday morning by the COMMERCIAL REGISTER AND PATRIOT. This is the issue of April 22, 1837, and contains much information on the market for cotton - how many bales were brought into the port the past week and the year to date, how much was exported to the Northeast, England, and France, and a report on the market in Liverpool. Also noted are wholesale and retail prices on various goods, a list of vessels in port, and brief reports on the markets in Havana, New York, and Baltimore. The autograph letter, signed, on the third page of this bifolium was written by Toulmin, Hazard, and Company, commission merchants in Mobile, to the Abraham Bell & Company firm of New York City. The Toulmin firm had a long relationship with Bell, usually dealing in cotton. This letter relates to the accounts between the two firms, the Toulmin firm's difficulty in obtaining checks from Mobile banks, and the expectation that local banks will soon have funds in New York, enabling their commerce to continue. OCLC locates scattered issues of this shipping and commercial list (some apparently electronic reproductions) at the University of Alabama, the Huntington Library, the American Antiquarian Society, and the Harvard Business School Library. A valuable source of information on the market for cotton and other goods in Mobile and the South, and the financial ties between South and North. OCLC 12533715.

        The Philosophy of Natural History

Scott, Webster & Geary, London 1837 - Duodecimo, frontispiece and engraved title-page; contemporary roan with gilt to spine and boards. An attractive fore-edge painting based upon the famous Sydney Cove view engraved by Edward Dayes. This image, transmitted through various forms (from oil on canvas to engraving to fore-edge painting) is believed to be the work of convict artist Thomas Watling. Engravings by Dayes after originals by Watling feature in the First Fleet accounts of Collins and Hunter, and are now iconic Australiana images. The present for-edge rendition is skillfully executed, painted under the gilding and only to be revealed only when the pages are gently fanned. An old clipping from a booksellers catalogue advertising this book (circa 1930) notes the Sydney view, and the pastedown bears the bookplate of New Zealand book collector and art critic E. C.         Two ALS sent from Sydney to George Birnie in England

Sydney, 1837. Both with old folds and both damaged where originally opened; otherwise very good.. Two autograph letters on different paper stock (the first 230 x 190, the second 200 x 320 mm.). Two revealing letters written by a prominent woman trader regarding life in Sydney and with much on the difficulties being endured by her husband, who had been declared insane in 1825. James and Martha Matilda Birnie both arrived in New South Wales in 1809 on the Mary Ann, where James was to kick off his career as the local agent for his brother Alexander Birnie. James Birnie worked as a whaler and sealer, but also began to speculate in other trading ventures, and the couple became reasonably prominent in Sydney, particularly the society of religious leaders including Samuel Marsden, Bishop Broughton and the Hassalls. The Birnies took up some large land grants but James developed serious mental health problems, being pronounced insane around 1825. With her husband incapacitated Martha Matilda was called on to run most of their affairs. The present pair of letters are written by Martha Matilda to her nephew George Birnie in London, and show that Birnie was still well-connected with many of the religious and reforming figures in Sydney. The first letter starts with a charming description of how her husband James is in improving health, reading and walking out, and that his old acquaintance are pleased by "the sweet change in him, in his advanced age". Much of the letter is taken up with her description of the receiving and sending of all manner of seeds: she has had "garden seeds" from England, and returns the favour with a "tin box" full of local seeds including those of the "Moreton Bay Chestnut" and the "Norfolk Pine" (the letter is still early enough for these to have been interesting and valuable acquisitions, and young George is evidently a keen gardener). The second letter is full of Birnie's comments on the small society of Quakers, noting the very good work being done by Daniel Wheeler and his son, as well as the famous visit of James Backhouse and George Washington Walker. Birnie makes the comment that she wishes that Elizabeth Fry, the social and prison reformer, would actually visit Sydney. In a postscript she adds that "our dear old friend Mr Marsden "is gone to see what benefit he can be for good to the New Zealanders at his advance age, upwards of seventy… We live in great friendship with each other which is truly pleasant in this place."

Cultura e opulencia do Brazil, por suas drogas e minas ….

Rio de Janeiro, J. Villeneuve (sold by Souza & Comp.), 1837.. 4°, twentieth-century (ca. 1980) dark green morocco, spine with horizontal fillets in blind, raised bands in six compartments, short author in gilt in second compartment from head, short title gilt in fourth compartment, place and date gilt at foot, forest green endleaves. Minor foxing. Half title slightly soiled. All pages have 3 small holes at head, middle, and foot, probably from being stitched together. Nevertheless a neat, clean copy: overall in very good to fine condition. Copious marginal notes and 6 manuscript leaves by Capistrano de Abreu bound in; also 4 manuscript leaves in another hand. vii, 214 pp. *** Second complete edition and first Brazilian edition of a work originally published pseudonymously in Lisbon, 1711. "It is hardly possible to overestimate the importance of Antonil's @Cultura e opulencia do Brasil for the period of which it treats and indeed for many subsequent decades. Every serious modern work which deals with eighteenth-century Brazil has relied on it heavily ..." (Boxer, @Some Literary Sources p. 7). J.H. The first edition was suppressed and Boxer knew of only seven copies, in the national libraries of Paris, Lisbon, Rio de Janeiro (two copies), at the British Library, the University of São Paulo, and in a private collection in Rio de Janeiro. Although part of the work was published by José Mariano da Conceição Veloso in 1800, the whole work did not appear again until this edition of 1837, which was done from a manuscript copy at Rio de Janeiro. It includes an introduction by the Brazilian writer José Silvestre Rebello. @Cultura e opulencia deals first and foremost, but certainly not exclusively, with the agricultural and mineral wealth of Brazil. The first and longest part (36 chapters) deals with the cultivation, refining and exportation of sugar; the second (twelve chapters) with the cultivation, curing and export of tobacco; the third (seventeen chapters) with the recently discovered gold mines in Minas Geraes; and the fourth (six chapters) with cattle ranching and the export of hides and leather. In the course of giving his exacting report of economic conditions, the author also gives much information about social life: for example, the migrations to the gold-mining regions, race relations in Minas Geraes, slavery, mores of hospitality, means of communication, and family structures. The Overseas Councillors, at whose request the work was suppressed, argued that the detailed information given about the gold mines would cause foreigners to try to steal what rightfully belonged to the Portuguese. Portuguese officials did have some grounds for feeling threatened: the publication of @Cultura e opulencia coincided with the final stages of the War of the Spanish Succession, the outbreak of the Guerra dos Mascates in Pernambuco, and the capture and sack of Rio de Janeiro by the French, and came soon after the Guerra dos Emboabas. Even when matters were more stable, however, little information about Minas Geraes was allowed to be published until the early nineteenth century. André João Antonil is the pseudonym of João Antonio Andreoni (1649-1716), a Jesuit born at Lucca, Italy, who travelled to Brazil with P. António Vieira in 1681. He professed at Bahia, before P. Alexandre Gusmão, and took up a position as teacher of rhetoric there; later he served as Rector of the Colégio da Bahia and as Provincial. He strongly disagreed with Vieira on the questions of black and Indian slavery. @Provenance: The manuscript notes in this copy were made by João Capistrano de Abreu, one of Brazil's greatest historians: he "achieved an incomparable eminence in his generation because of his theoretical interpretation, tireless research, creative imagination, special qualities, new capabilities and style" (J.H. Rodrigues, "Capistrano and Brazilian Historiography," in @Perspectives on Brazilian History, ed. E. Bradford Burns, p. 172). The author of @Cultura e opulencia remained unknown until Capistrano solved the puzzle in 1886. His delight at his discovery is recounted in a letter to Afonso de Taunay (excerpts reprinted in J.H. Rodrigues, @História da história do Brasil pp. 395-6). Capistrano intended to produce an edition of the work, which explains the copious notes in the margins and at the end of this copy. However, in the end he left the task to Taunay (Rodrigues, p. 397). *** Borba de Moraes (1983) I, 40: "a standard textbook of Brazilian economic history and an obligatory reference book."         The Philosophy of Natural History.

London: Scott, Webster & Geary, 1837. Duodecimo, frontispiece and engraved title-page; contemporary roan with gilt to spine and boards. C. Simpson. Binding lightly rubbed, very good overall.
