History of the Inductive Sciences [and] The Philosophy of the Inductive Sciences

London: John W. Parker, 1837 & 1840. First editions. "History" in three volumes, "Philosophy" in two. 8vo. Uniformly bound in tan full calf, spines with raised bands, gilt lettered labels, all edges marbled. Slight darkening to the spines, an attractive set. Whewell was a prolific writer and something of a scientific polymath, concerning himself with the development and understanding of the wider reaches of the subject rather than specialising in specific branches. Indeed, it was said that Charles Lyell initially regretted that his contemporary didn't concentrate his great intellect on particular sciences, but subsequently came to the opinion that "by being a universalist rather than a specialist he was assisting the progress of science". (ODNB) These were his two most important works: in the first Whewell sought to provide an introductory explanation of the subject, whilst in the latter he sought to provide a philosophical grounding for the development of science and knowledge in general.

Vienna: Tobias Haslinger, [1837]. - First trade edition (P N: T.H. 6801) after the limited Haslinger Prachtausgabe (Deluxe edition) of 48 cm (18.9 in). Black cloth spine with original thin yellow cardboard binding with elaborately decorated red border with black lettering of title, author, publisher, etc on front cover. 8 unnumbered preliminary sheets with dedications to the attending monarchs, delegates, advisors, and a printing of the words of the cantata. 200 pages of the full score for orchestra, vocal soloists and chorus. 33 x 26 cm (13 x 10.2 in.) 1.16 kg (2 lb 12 oz). Very Good Plus copy with some soiling to outside of covers, but with original covers, scattered foxing, mostly in the margins, a few wrinkles, and one sheet of text detached, as part of its interior margin has adhered to previous sheet; this could be restored bya competent book or paper repairer. Anton Schindler, Beethoven’s secretary, wrote in his biography of Beethoven that there were 6,000 people in the great hall of the Congress of Vienna when the work was performed, and that it made a wonderful impression on the delegates and the audience as a whole. The text addresses the 3 powerful monarchs present, and each of these has an elaborately engraved page in the score with crowns, heraldic crests, etc.: Franz I, Emperor of Austria; Nicholas I, Emperor of Russia; Friedrich Wilhelm III, King of Prussia. The orchestra contained 68 string players, plus the usual winds and percussion, making it the largest orchestra of any Beethoven premier and, as far as is known, the largest orchestra provided for any of his works during the life of the composer. There were large choirs of women, men and children, with 4 soloists representing Vienna, Scherinn. Genius, and Führer des Volkes. Both Carl Czerny and Carl Reinecke made piano reductions of the score. The score was not published until 1835 and then only in a 48 cm. format; KVK and WorldCat find the only libraries that hold this are in Vienna and Lucerne. This regular edition of the orchestra score in 1837 was its last printing by Haslinger. KVK and WorldCat show this edition in a library in Munich, Frankfurt, Vienna, Amsterdam, at Royal College of Music and The British Library in London, U. of Texas at Austin, Washington U. in St. Louis. Also see Kurt Dorfmüller et al, Beethoven: Thematisch-bibliographisches Werkverzeichnis (2014), pages 894-914. The work runs about 35 to 40 minutes; hear uninspired recordings at YouTube or Spotify.         Middle East Campaigns. Watercolours and sketches from the Bosporus, Syria, and Egypt, signed "J. C." Various places, c. 1837-1845.

1837. Folio (290 x 441 mm). 23 watercolours, 11 pencil drawings, mounted. Brown quarter calf with contemporary marbled boards. Stunning collection of paintings and drawings by Sir John Corbett, realized during his naval campaigns in the Ottoman Mediterranean. Corbett joined the Navy in 1835 and was promoted to the rank of Commander in 1852, then to Captain in 1857. He served in the 1856-60 Second Opium War, fought by Britain and France against the Qing dynasty of China, and was made Commander in Chief, East Indies, in 1877. An amateur painter, he regularly brought home drawings and watercolours from his travels. The present collection comprises his earliest such works, prepared between the ages of 15 and 22 during service in the Mediterranean - at the beginning of his career both as a sailor and as a painter. While the first series of the album, the work of a talented boy still honing his skills, is dedicated to Turkey and the Bosporus (1837-38), the second, showing the coasts of Syria, Mount Lebanon and Egypt (1840-1841), reveals a more fully developed draughtsman and colourist. The collection also includes sketches of Malta (1843), Tangiers (1845), Liverpool, and Lisbon. The sun-drenched coastal views of Middle East, the scenes of attack on Tortosa in Syria and of the English armada at Beirut to which he was a witness are mostly signed and captioned, sometimes on the reverse, sometimes with an additional label added later by the artist. A beautiful set.

Autograph letter signed "Stoltz Rosine" to Mr. [François-Joseph] Fétis, Director of the Conservatoire

The present letter was written shortly before Stoltz made her Paris Opéra début, as Rachel in La Juive, on August 25, 1837. She remained there for ten years, and created a number of roles, including Ascanio in Berlioz's Benvenuto Cellini (1838) and Léonor in Donizetti's La Favorite (1840). Scandal forced her to resign in 1847, but she returned in 1854. She was especially praised for the intensity of her acting, and her vocal color and broad palette of timbres. Mary Ann Smart in Grove Music Online. Gilbert Duprez, whom the letter mentions, made his highly successful début at the Paris Opéra in Rossini's Guillaume Tell on April 17, 1837. When in the same year first tenor Adolphe Nourrit had to resign from the Opéra due to vocal problems, Duprez, his successor, had to take over many of his roles. "[Duprez] gradually... became the first great tenore di forza, despite a vocal tessitura limited in its lower range... In France he was praised as the first true Romantic tenor and for his excellent declamation and the smoothness of his canto spianato... Presumably through forcing his voice, and also because of the great number of performances he gave during his years in Italy where he had to sing as many as six times a week, a decline set in early; Berlioz greatly admired him in the vigorous music of Benvenuto Cellini in 1838, though noting (Mémoires) that his voice had coarsened somewhat. The story of the famous tenor's rise and fall in Berlioz's Les soirées de l'orchestre is largely based on Duprez's career. He composed a number of operas and his writings include L'art du chant (1845) and Souvenirs d'un chanteur (1880), a valuable account of his times and distinguished contemporaries." Sandro Corti in Grove Music Online. Fétis was "among the most influential musical figures in continental Europe for most of the 19th century, occupying key posts within the Franco-Belgian musical establishment and initiating significant cultural trends through his theoretical works and his concert activity... [He] was at the centre of a network of historians, librarians and early-music performers active in France and Belgium throughout the 19th century. His writings, though recognized as flawed, provided a reference point for such musicians and often offered valuable methodological models regarding the use of primary and secondary sources in the quest for historical information... His vast library and important collection of early instruments... were bequeathed to the Belgian nation: his library is housed in the Bibliothèque Albert Ier, his instrument collection forms part of the museum of the Brussels Conservatory." Katharine Ellis et al. in Grove Music Online. An interesting letter linking three important 19th century musical figures.. 1 page of a bifolium. Quarto. Postmarked Paris, June 3[?], 1837 and Brussels, June 4[?], 1837. In Ink. With integral autograph address panel to verso. In French (with translation). Stoltz graciously thanks Fétis for his letters of recommendation. She had wanted to wait until after her début to thank him, but that has been postponed, perhaps until the end of the month She will sing in Halévy's La Juive alongside Gilbert Duprez, who must learn his role. She is taking advantage of the delay by taking lessons with the noted tenor, Louis Ponchard, four times a week. "I was waiting to give you all my thanks until I had made my début, in order to disturb you just one single time from your serious work... The first role that I am to play is La Juive. Mr. [Gilbert] Duprez does not know the role of Eléazar at all, so he must learn it before then. He also has to perform [Louis Niedermeyer's] Stradella, [Meyerbeer's] Robert [le diable], and [Auber's] La Muette. You see from this list that there will be some time before I appear on the stage of the opera... " Slightly worn, soiled and foxed; creased at folds and corners; slightly faded; remnants of wax seal and minor abrasion and perforation to upper edge of second leaf; previous owner's small round blindstamps to lower margin. Together with a carte-de-visite waist-length photographic reproduction of the noted French mezzo-soprano published in Paris by Pierre Petit. Ca. 103 x 63 mm. with red borders.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. Stuttgart, 11. V. 1837.

1837. 1 S. Gr.-4to.

[ref: 90977] MAJOR ABBEY’S FINELY BOUND COPY OF AN ORCHID MASTERPIECE - THE MOST DESIRABLE OF ALL ORCHID COLOR PLATE BOOKS WITH A STERLING PROVENANCE. Limited to 125 copies, the work is "probably the finest, and certainly the largest, botanical book ever produced with lithographic plates. In size and in splendour, Bateman's giant folio eclipses the works of all who went before or came after him. Maxim Gauci, who was born in Malta, executed the forty lithographs. a master of the process, he ranged his tone from the palest of silvery greys to the richest velvet black; his outline is never mechanical or obtrusive; and the hand-colouring -- whoever may be responsible for it -- is executed with consummate skill" (W. Blunt, The Art of Botanical Illustration, 1994, pp.249-251). Bateman was a pioneer of the culture of orchids. "In 1833 he sent at his own expense, the collector Colley to Demerara and Berbice to collect plants. Shortly afterwards he induced G. Ure Skinner, a merchant trading in Guatemala, to send him orchids. In 1837, he commenced the publication [of the present work]. which he completed in 1843. Bateman was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society. 1833 and of the Royal Society. 1838. In 1867 he issued A Second Century of Orchidaceous Plants. Between 1864 and 1874 he published A Monograph of Odontglossum. Bateman was not only the pioneer of orchid culture; he was also one of the first to advocate 'cool' orchid cultivation" (DNB). Sarah Anne Drake (1803-1857) and Augusta Innes Withers (ca 1793-1864), the two principal artists, produced 37 of the 40 original watercolors. Miss Drake of Turnham Green, as she was known professionally, was born in Norfolk. From about 1832 until 1847 she was a botanist and orchidologist, John Lindley's principal botanical artist, and also a member of his household. She returned to Norfolk in 1847 and married in 1852, but died of diabetes in 1857. Mrs. Withers worked for the Horticultural Society in the 1820s and was appointed flower painter to Queen Adelaide in 1830, and later became Flower and Fruit Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria. Little more is known of her life other than her work. Major Abbey, the eldest son of William Henry Abbey, a brewer, was probably the pre-eminent book collector in the middle part of the twentieth century. He formed outstanding collection consisting of over 1,300 colour-plate books, illuminated manuscripts, and fine bindings. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LETTERS TO THE RIGHT HONOURABLE LORD BROUGHAM AND VAUX; PRESENTING RAMBLING DETAILS OF A TOUR THROUGH FRANCE, SWITZERLAND, AND ITALY; WITH SOME REMARKS ON HOME POLITICS

London: John Macrone, 1837. [2],iv,[3-]350pp. Original paper boards, printed spine label. Lower board detached, upper board nearly so, spine chipped, edges worn. Copious pencil notations on endpapers and titlepage, pencil drawing on rear pastedown, with a few additional notation marks scattered through the text. Light tanning and occasional foxing. Good plus. In a half calf box. A copy of Arthur Brook Faulkner's travel narrative, styled as letters to Lord Henry Brougham, well annotated by William Thomas Beckford, writer and author of the Gothic novel VATHEK. Faulkner was an Irish physician and author known for his accounts of continental travel. Here, he writes rather snobbishly of his tour through France, Switzerland, and Italy in early 1837. Beckford, however, was not amused, and amongst his entertaining notes opined that, "This rambling author runs his furious truck & vulgar rig against established... governments with such umitigated virulence that one can hardly help feeling surprised that even Ld Brougham should have accepted the dedication of such a farrago of rank abuse & hackneyed ribaldry." Beckford's further detailed observations are written onto the front and rear endpapers as well as the verso of the titlepage, ranging from short quotation of passages to poltical commentary and notes on mythology. On the rear pastedown, there is a pencil drawing in Beckford's hand of a book cabinet designed for his home in Bath, Lansdown Crescent, where he housed a large portion of his library. A unique record of a prominent author's literary habits and opinions.

Autograph letter signed ("Felix"). Leipzig, 20. XI. 1837.

1837. Large 4to. 2 pp. To an undisclosed recipient: "When I posted the letter to you the day before yesterday, I already half suspected that yours would come yesterday - and it really did, and scolded me, and I deserved it, too. But write me again soon and tell me how you are. Your letter is in a bad mood, and it couldn't very well be otherwise; but tell me, couldn't you undertake some good and proper project of your own, in seclusion, as a comfort and therapeutic? [...] I am sending this letter with Rosen's portrait to Paul in Hamburg, who has just arrived there and will be staying there a few months; he will certainly be able to send it to you soon. I hardly think the sketch will be of any use because it was done so very hastily; but I find the likeness so very good, and I ask particularly to see to it that I get it back undamaged. When you write of the dead season again, and I think again of the despairing foggy days I was amazed to see this time in James Park, and when I then also see the disgusting snow that has been lying here for several days, then I say Germany forever, after all. Small and miserably dead it is here, and yet there is much to live for. If I had enough character to turn down the next Rhinish Music Festival, it could be possible that I would stay entirely, my whole life, sitting here in Leipzig, and I and my art, we would be only the better for it. But I fear I am too vain for them; and yet I must do it sooner or later. We are furnishing our flat - as people say - i.e., there has been constant talk of wallpaper, curtains, and furniture, and in a week we are supposed to be able to move in, although we don't want to until 4 weeks from now; in a new house standing alone, on the third floor, the view to the South over the fields and the forest, to the North on the promenade and the city and towers, to the West on a big water mill with its wheels, then you only have to drop in, your quarters are ready; in a room papered with bouquets of flowers you are to have lodgings, and the white hall and our rooms are completely at your disposal. You shall hear music, half as much as I in the last weeks, i.e., up to your ears - singing, piano, quartets, of whatever kind you want. And better than all that you will find my Rüdesheimer 1834 wine. I picked it out in Bingen, had a cask of it transported here, and am creating a huge furor with it here in Leipzig because they aren't used to things like that. And now even you, who has had to make do with the barbaric [...] things: Hock [Hochheimer is a wine from the Main area], and still have a German heart - you will like it [...]" (transl. from the German original). - Mendelssohn paraphrases the quote from the opening poem of Goethe's collection of poetry, The West Eastern Divan: "North and West and South splinter, thrones burst, kingdoms tremble; fee to taste the air of patriarchs in the pure East". Rosen, to whom he refers, is the Sanskrit scholar Friedrich Rosen, who had died in London on September 12, 1837. Cecile Jeanrenaud is Mendelssohn's wife, who he had married on March 28, 1837. - Crude repair to marginal tears.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. Jena, 10. X. 1837.

1837. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to.

      - Warrington, Londres 1837, In 12 oblong (13,5x10,5cm), (4) 24pp., Plaquette brochée.
