A Review, Financial, Statistical, & Commercial, of the Empire of Brazil and its Resources: Together with a Suggestion of the Expediency and Mode of Admitting Brazilian and other Foreign Sugars into Great Britain for Refining and Exportation.

      - London, Effingham Wilson, 1837. 8vo. Slightly later dark green pebble-grained cloth, spine lettered in gilt, yellow endpapers; pp. viii, 151, large folding table, others in the text; very light marginal wear, title and last leaf a little spotted due to offsetting from fly-leaves; provenance: from Gloucestershire County Library with their stamps and shelfmarks; contemporary engraved armorial bookplate G. R. Porter inside front cover. Very rare first edition of this economic study of Brazil at the beginning of the Victorian era, with the aim of attracting British investment to the recently established independent country, 'now possessed of a well-ordered, economical, and popular Governement' (p. viii). Johann Jakob Sturz was born in Frankfurt (1800) to a Bavarian civil servant, who had 12 children. He became a merchant, and driven by wanderlust did business in Mexico, before he was hired by a London gold mining company active in Brazil. Disgusted by the treatment of the black workforce, he quit this good position after two years. He then campaigned for free trade with Brazil, linking the country with the world economy, against slavery, and after long negotiations and after having invested much of his own wealth, a British steam ship company gained access to Brazilian rivers and ports in 1838. He devoted the rest of his life (he died in 1877) to philanthropic causes, and campaigned against cruelty to animals. All of his books and pamphlets are of great rarity. Borba de Moraes 841.       Quatriéme édition, considerablement augmentée par M.Andral. - Paris, J.S. Claudé, 1837, 8, XXVIII, 672 pp., 2 ll., 704 pp. + 2 ll., 580 pp., 4 lith. Doppeltafeln, 3 Halbledereinbänden der Zeit mit reicher Rückenvergoldung. This three volumes are uniformly bound in half calf, richly gilt decorated. Ex library copy (Yale Medical Library). A small hole in the title page of vol. 1, but a clean and well preserved, nice set.THE GREAT ANDRAL EDITION. The Publication of this work revolutionized the study of diseases of the Thoracic Organs. R.Th.Laennec (1781-1826) was something much more than the discoverer of auscultation. He was a distinguished anatomist and great clinician. The invention of the stethoscope was remarkable, but even more remarkable was what he himself did with the instrument. Gabriel Andral (1797-1876), clinician and teacher, was one of the outstanding figures in the golden days of 19th century Parisian medicine. The works by Andral are clinically significant and characteristic of the best medical practice more than a century ago. cf. Garrison & Morton, No 2673 + 3219 Bedford No. 457

Stemmi e intitolazioni di Sua Maestà Imperiale Reale Apostolica Ferdinando I.° Imperatore d'Austria.

Milano, dall'Imperiale Regia Stamperia, 1837. - Folio (230 x 340 mm). (20) pp. With 4 lithographed plates (one folded, measuring 48 x 59 cms). (Includes): Wappen und Titel Seiner kaiserlichen königlichen Apostolischen Majestät Ferdinand des Ersten, Kaisers von Oesterreich. (20) pp. Small folio. Publication of the official titles and styles of Ferdinand, who had become emperor of Austria in 1835 and would be crowned King of Lombardy-Venetia in 1838 (a mere formality, anticipated here). Gives the long, middle, and short titles in both Italian and Latin, a detailed Italian description of Ferdinand's coats of arms (also in its full, medium, and small versions), and the Latin titles to be used in as seal legends with these coats of arms. All three versions of the arms are illustrated; in addition, a diagram explains the extremely detailed Great Coat. - A single ink annotation (to the explanation of the arms of Trieste); a tear to the folding illustration of the Great Coat has been repaired. Very rare: apart from the copy in the Austrian National Library, catalogues list a single copy in the U.S. (University of Illinois) and two in Italy (Biblioteca della Fondazione Biblioteca San Bernardino and Biblioteca della Fondazione Bruno Kessler, both in Trento). - Included is the slightly smaller German version, not illustrated, but prefixing a publication of the official decree of 23 September 1836, and giving the titles in Latin and German, the heraldic description of the various titles (annotated in red crayon and ink, taking particular exception to the description of the arms of Bregenz as turnips: "Nonsense! They are ermine tails"), and the seal legends. - Some brownstaining and a few edge flaws to the German publication. OCLC 883395896.

SOUTH AFRICA - EASTERN CAPE / XHOSA WARS: [UNTITLED MANUSCRIPT SKETCH MAP OF THE ‘EASTERN FRONTIER’ OF THE CAPE COLONY / GRAHAMSTOWN-GREAT FISH RIVER AREA].

Manuscript, pen and brown ink, with pencil, on paper (Good, chipping along edges with minor loss, old folds), 39 x 20.5 cm (15.5 x 8 inches). - [‘Eastern Frontier’, Cape Colony], 1837. An original manuscript sketch map of the Grahamstown-Great Fish River region of South Africa, the strategically critical ‘Eastern Frontier’ of the Cape Colony, made immediately in the wake of the Sixth European-Xhosa War (1834-6). - This intriguing manuscript sketch map was made by an English settler, in 1837, and depicts the ‘Eastern Frontier’ region of the British Cape Colony, in the immediate wake of the Sixth European-Xhosa War (1834-6). Importantly, and as will be explained further, the map features the locations of several of the conflict’s key battles. The map’s scope embraces the "Sea" (Indian Ocean) coast roughly between the mouths of the Kareeg and Great Fish Rivers, and extends inland to include Grahamstown, a good stretch of the Great Fish River, a tract of the Keiskamma River, and further inland to a point just beyond Beaufort. Most of the territory depicted, being the lands west of the lower Great Fish and the Kat Rivers (known as the Albany and Beaufort Districts), is implicitly assumed to the part of the Cape Colony, inhabited largely by recently arrived English settlers. The territory beyond the lower Great Fish and Kat Rivers is labeled ‘Kafir Territory’, also known as Kaffreria, being the lands of the Xhosa, a nation of skilled warriors who had long resisted European encroachment. It is important to note that ‘Kafir’ is today considered a derogatory term for Black Africans, although curiously the word originally comes from an Arabic term for "infidel". The English settlements along the Eastern Frontier of the Cape Colony were anchored by the centres of Grahamstown, Bathurst and Beaufort, as shown here. However, the map features a wealth of other information, revealing the region to be a military frontier, including the locations of current and former British army outposts, such as "Fort Brown" and "Fort Willshire (abandoned)" (a forward position located in Xhosa territory); numerous trading posts; .

Ferguson III, 3026 Howgego V, Imaginary Voyages, L1.

Autographed Letter, Signed "Secy. Mahlon Dickerson," to Nicholas Biddle, President of the Bank of the United States, responding to Biddle's proposal to make funds available for Navy Pensions

Washington, D.C., 1837. 1-1/2 pages, pen and ink on paper. Folio. Old folds, else fine. 1-1/2 pages, pen and ink on paper. Folio. A PROPOSAL TO FUND NAVY PENSIONS. A chronicle of the short-lived Bank of the United States and it's continued involvement in US Navy pensions. After the demise of the Second Bank of the United States in 1836, a result of the historical "Bank War" between US President Andrew Jackson and Bank President Nicholas Biddle, Biddle attempted to resuscitate the institution as a commercial bank chartered by the State of Pennsylvania. The former bank's stock holders (excepth the US govenrment) voted to transfer the old bank's assets and liabilities to the new bank, which made it difficult to disentangle the dealings of the defunct bank with the newly stae-chartered one. This letter, from Secretary of the Navy, Mahlon Dickerson, discusses arrangements for The Bank of the United States to fund Navy Pensions and is an example of it's continued involvement with the US Government after the Second Bank of the United States charter had expired. Reading in part: "I have received your letter of the 19th inst. and agree to the arrangement you propose, that for the funds you may place at the disposal of this department for the payment of Navy Pensions, credit shall be given on the Bond from the Bank of the United States chartered by the Legislature of Pennsylvania to the United States..." Written at the onset of the Panic of 1837, Biddle would fail to replicate the success he experienced as President of the Second Bank of the United States, and resigned as President in 1839. The Bank of the Unites States failed in 1841. Biddle faced financial ruin and was arrested for fraud but was acquitted before his death in 1844. Born in Hanover Township, New Jersey, Mahlon Dickerson (1770-1853) was a cavalry veteran of the Whiskey Rebellion, who would go on to be elected Governor of New Jersey, serve as US Senator, receive two appointments as Secretary of the Navy, and be confirmed as a judge for the United States District Court of New Jersey.

North Ludlow Beamish (1797-1872) was an Irish army officer, military writer, and antiquary. Beamish's professional abilities brought him to notice, and he received a half-pay majority in the following year. While attached to the viceregal suite in Hanover he published Lectures on … Cavalry (1827), a translation of another work by Count von Bismarck, with original notes, in which he suggested various changes soon after adopted in the British cavalry. He also published History of the King's German Legion (2 vols., 1832-7), which was highly regarded" (DNB).
