The Eclectic Fourth Reader: Containing Elegant Extracts in Prose and Poetry, from the Best American and English Writers. With Copious Rules for Reading, and Directions for Avoiding Common Errors

Cincinnati: Truman and Smith, 1837. Sixth Edition. Full-Leather. Good/No Jacket. 1838 sixth edition. Foxed throughout, front free endpaper absent, several gatherings a bit proud at fore-edge. Boards very well preserved, leather still supple. 1837 Full-Leather. xii, 324 pp. The title page states 'Enlarged, improved, and stereotyped.' with 'Sixth edition.' beneath; the preface, though, notes "Second edition. -- This second edition is considerably enlarge; and, it is hoped, improved. The volume is now stereotyped, and will not be subjected to alteration in subsequent editions." Therefore, this may more properly be described as the fifth printing of the second edition. Subsequent editions that did contain revisions also changed the title (e.g., McGuffey's Newly Revised Eclectic Fourth Reader; McGuffey's New Fourth Eclectic Reader). An early example of the popular readers compiled by McGuffey in the 19th century (he began to release these in 1836), and the last volume in the Eclectic Readers series. These were designed as graded primers for the use of school children, and became widely used as textbooks. They continue to be popular for homeschooling, and are still in print today. Original editions are widely collected as artifacts of early American schooling. This volume includes excerpts of writings from: Washington Irving; Samuel Johnson; Lord Bacon; Lord Byron; John Milton; William Shakspeare; the Holy Bible; etc. William McGuffey was a career educator, serving as a professor at Miami University of Oxford, Ohio, and later becoming president of Cincinnati College, and then Ohio University, and finishing his career as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Virginia.

Sketches by Boz (in 20 monthly parts)

Chapman and Hall, London 1837 - First Editions, First Printings in the ORIGINAL 20 monthly parts. A wonderful set. These monthly parts are bound in the ORIGINAL pink wrappers published from November 1837 through June 1839. Theses "Sketches" had appeared in various journals and magazines as early as 1832 under the pen-name "Boz" a Dickens family nickname. The first book form as a "First Series" in two volumes was published in February 1836 with a "Second Series" in Decemeber 1836. Therefore, the issue of monthly numbers post-dated the book form unlike the publishing history of other Dickens' novels. The first monthly issue coincided with the final installment of "Pickwick Papers". The pink wrappers all contain the front cover design by George Cruikshank. There are a total of 40 full-page plates drawn and etched by Cruikshank, two in each number. No imprint appears on the plates until the sixth number. This set is consistent and correct. All plates are toned around edges, occasional spotting within images. Numbers are discussed in following notes: Number 1 has a tipped-in catalogue listing for this copy. The issue is complete; Number 2 is complete with the very scarce "Address" dated November 30, 1837; Number 3 is complete with the very scarce MECHI'S CATALOGUE. The first page of the catalogue is torn at fore-edge with 3/4" piece missing. All Virtue ads are present but folded differently than the order in Hatton; Number 4 has ink name at top of front cover, several brown spots on rear cover; Number 5 is complete with the four-page "Proclamation" which is frequently missing; Number 6 has ink name at top of front cover, Chapman and Hall imprint begins to be included at bottom of plates; Number 7-12 complete without flaws; Number 13 has a small brown spot on the "Boarding House" plate; Number 14-17 complete with ink name on front cover of #15-16; Number 18 has a small bookseller's stamp on front cover; Number 19 has a small tear to spine, Number 20 has a Ink name rear cover.First issue point on last page of Number 20 with "reeledbefore" run together on last page, 6 lines up. In summary, 18 of the 20 issues are complete and correct, containing all adverts, the announcement, and the proclamation, and the elusive Mechi's catalogue. A few spines have had archival-quality repairs. Housed in a full green morocco custom slipcase made by SANGORSKI AND SUTCLIFFE, spine panels, gilt lettering, spine gently mellowed to dark brown. This piece of Dickensiana rarely comes to auction, five times in 25 years It has appeared in only two dealer's catalogues in the past 13 years. . We note 11 libraries world-wide listing it among their holdings. See Hatton and Cleaver pp. 91-128 and Eckels pp. 15-22. A wonderful set in collector's condition. We buy Dickens in parts.         [SIX PEN-AND-INK FIGURE STUDIES BY AUGUSTUS KOLLNER]

[Philadelphia. 1837, 1861-1867].. [Philadelphia. 1837, 1861-1867].. Six large sheets, ranging in size from 19 1/2 x 14 to 23 x 16 inches. Some light wear at edges. One drawing with some light foxing; relatively minor soiling otherwise. Very good. Six large figure drawings by German-American artist Augustus Kollner, depicting male nudes in various poses: standing, lying, and sitting. Though Kollner is best known for his lithographs and watercolors, he also produced etchings, woodcuts, and drawings, preferring pen and ink as his medium for these. Aside from the earliest of these studies, dated March 1837, the drawings were executed in Philadelphia during the 1860s, after Kollner's commercial ventures had mostly subsided. "German-born Augustus Theodore Frederick Kollner arrived in America in 1839 and enjoyed an artistically fruitful career in this country until his death in 1906...Associated at one time or another with each of the major lithographic firms in Philadelphia, he worked his way from journeyman to artist, to chief artist, to partner. Ultimately, he owned his own establishment" - Wainwright. After the Civil War his career flagged, but because of his wife's inheritance he was able to pick and choose what projects he accepted. This financial freedom also allowed him the luxury to paint at leisure, and in his later years he generated a tremendous amount of work, which he often kept bound up in albums. An attractive and unusual example of Kollner's artistic abilities. Wainwright, "Augustus Kollner, Artist" in PMHB, Vol. 84, no. 3 (ref).

Housed in a later green cloth clamshell case.Charles James Apperley (1777-1843), English sportsman and sporting writer, better known as Nimrod, the pseudonym under which he published his works on the chase and on the turf. A devoted fox-hunter, around 1821 Apperley began to contribute a series of articles to The Sporting Magazine, under the pseudonym of "Nimrod," that covered horse races, hunt meets and other sporting events. His references to the personalities of the people he knew or met at such events helped to double the circulation of the magazine within a few years. Mr. Pittman, the proprietor of The Sporting Magazine, gave Nimrod a handsome salary and defrayed all the expenses of his tours. He also gave Nimrod a stud of hunters. After Pittman's death, the proprietors of the magazine sued Apperley for the money that had been advanced. To avoid imprisonment, Apperley moved to Calais in 1830, where he supported himself by writing. Apperley is best known for his two books, The Life of a Sportsman, and Memoirs of the Life of John Mytton, both of which were illustrated with colored engravings by Henry Thomas Alken. Apperley eventually returned to England and died in Upper Belgrave Place, London, on 19 May 1843.The Plates:1. Preparing to Start.2. Getting Well Off.3. The Race - Epsom.4. The Melton Hunt.5.         The Naval History of Great Britain, From the Declaration of War by France in 1793, to the Accession of George IV. A New Edition, with Considerable Additions and Notes, and an Account of the Burmese War and the Battle of Navarino.

London, Richard Bentley, 1837 - 6 volumes, octavo (213 × 133 mm). Contemporary dark purple grained calf by Cross of Greenwich - tickets to pastedowns - double red morocco labels, raised bands with gilt rules, compartments filled with rope-twist blind tooling, single broad gilt fillet panel to the boards, enclosing a dentelle panel in blind, marbled edges, dun endpapers. A little rubbed at the extremities, light toning, a very good set. 24 portraits, 38 battle-plans in the text, 28 folding tables. A "monument of accuracy - it has stood the test of time and remains the best account of the naval side of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars" (Kemp, The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea, p. 425). First conceived of when he was held prisoner in America during the War of 1812 the Naval History is a remarkable work. Working under the motto "Verité sans Peur", James set himself standards of inclusiveness and accuracy extraordinary for the 19th century. His aim was to compile ". an exact account of every operation of naval war during the period named. He consulted not only published works, especially the official narratives, both British and French, but also the logs of the ships, and, whenever possible, the participants themselves" (ODNB). Successively mined by Forester and O'Brian for incident and colour, this well-written history is not only essential reference for the period, but makes excellent reading. NMM, V, 2158.

        Fieldfare, Turdus Pilaris; (Linn)

London 1837 - This splendid hand-colored, folio-size lithograph, Fieldfare, Turdus Pilaris; (Linn), from John Gould’s (1804-1881) monumental book "Birds Europe" (1832-1837) is in excellent condition. Measuring 21.5" x 14.5", this lithograph magnificently displays the author’s scientific skill and attention to detail. Fieldfares are member of the Thrush family and this songbird is finely illustrated with precise lines defining and detailing each feather. This fine birds has multiple colors and intricate patterns on its neck and underside. John Gould was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became an expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was able to meet with the country’s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, “A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.” For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. His wife Elizabeth and other artists were able to transfer his sketches to stone; hand print and hand-color them. One of the most accomplished and engaging natural history works of the 19th century, “The Birds of Europe” was also the first of Gould's works to feature plates by Edward Lear. A total of sixty-eight images bear Lear's name, and they are among the most remarkable bird drawings ever made. Lear endowed his illustrations with some measure of his own whimsy and intelligence, and his style is at once fluidly spontaneous and realistically precise. In this way, the images of “The Birds of Europe” are amazingly distinctive, while also highly realistic. Gould undertook this work partly in an effort to redress the imbalance between the study of local and foreign ornithology. Gould portrayed birds native to Europe in a manner that had only been thought appropriate for the colorful species of distant places. In this way he managed to draw much popular interest back to native birds, which were suddenly considered equally beautiful to exotic species.
