Ritson, Joseph, ed.
William Pickering; York: J. & G. Todd, 1832. The earliest scholarly effort towards compiling and analyzing the surviving historical Robin Hood ballads, along with a carefully constructed argument regarding the identity of the "real" man behind the myth. This second, enlarged edition was the first published by Pickering, with the printing done by Charles Whittingham, and it showcases => Bewick's original wood-engravings from the 1795 first edition. The advertisement here notes that Ritson, following the original publication, "continued . . . to make additions to his own copy, from which the present edition has been carefully printed" -- and also claims that "from the improved art of wood-cut-printing," the Bewick illustrations are actually clearer and more beautiful here than they were in the first edition. Tunes for "Robin Hood and the Tanner," "Robin Hood and the Bishop of Hereford," "A Freeman's Song," a round that begins "Robin Hood, Robin Hood," and "Robin Hoods Delight" are supplied, along with a glossary of archaic vocabulary. Binding: Signed binding done by => Francis Bedford, stamped as such in turn-ins on front pastedowns and on front free endpapers: 19th-century calf framed in triple gilt fillets with small corner rondels, spines gilt extra with gilt-stamped red leather title-labels and green leather volume labels, board edges with double gilt fillets, turn-ins with gilt roll. All edges gilt. Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear of each volume.

ANSLIJN, N.
Leyden, Du Mortier en Zoon, 1832-1838. 4 volumes bound in two. Folio (340 x 240mm). With 265 fine handcoloured lithographed plates. Contemporary half cloth. One of the first scientific works with lithographed plates published in the Netherlands. The fine plates are after drawings by the author. Only 116 copies were subscribed and probably 130 copies were printed. It was issued in 53 parts and published over a period of 5 years. The publishing history of the work is complex. The first 5 plates were printed by Van Sander and Co. and published by J.C. Sepp and Son. Sepp discontinued the publication which was taken over by Mortier. Mortier issued the first 5 plates again. For this reason copies are sometimes found with 5 extra plates, and hence most bibliographies quote the wrong number of plates. Landwehr gives 266 plates, which is incorrect as plate 232 was never published. In the lists of plates in volume IV plate 232 is not listed. A fine and clean complete copy. //Landwehr 6; Nissen BBI, 39.

CLAUSEWITZ, Carl von.
Berlin: Ferdinand Dmmler, 1832-1837. Berlin: Ferdinand Dümmler, 1832-1837. First edition. Very scarce, fine, and complete set of Clausewitz´s writings on warfare, <i>Hinterlassene Werke über Krieg und Kriegführung</i>, with all 10 volumes, including the celebrated <i>Vom Kriege</i> (PMM 297), appearing in the first 3 volumes. “These thousand pages of ‘On Warfare' occupy a unique position among military writings of any age and nation. The book is less a manual of strategy and tactics, although it incorporates the lessons learned from the French revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, than a general inquiry into the interdependence of politics and warfare and the principles governing either or both. War, Clausewitz maintained, must always be regarded ‘as a political instrument'; for war, his most famous aphorism runs, ‘is nothing but politics continued by different means'. Consequently, he scorns the notion of ‘the harmful influence of politics upon the conduct of war', since blame, or praise, must be attached to politics itself. If the course of politics is sound, political influence on the conduct of war can only be advantageous: ‘The French revolutionary victories over twenty years resulted mainly from the faulty politics of the opposing governments'. <br/><br/> “His basic conception, that military decisions must always be subordinate to political considerations, is buttressed by the emphasis laid on morals and morale as the decisive factors in war. He therefore condemns all rigid blue-prints for campaigns and battles, defines strategy as ‘a perpetual alternation and combinat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Large octavo (242 x 150 mm). Modern green library buckram, spine lettered in gilt, red sprinkled edges, cloth inner hinges. Presentation leaf printed in purple. From the collection of British Arabist and colonial officer Samuel Barrett Miles (1838-1914), deposited at Bath Municipal Reference Library, with associated mounted slips and manuscript shelf-marks as usual. Like Champion, Atkinson starts with the story of Kayumart, and concludes with the death of Sikandar, or Alexander the Great. He employs a slightly disjointed variety of forms for his renderings into verse, but his prose renderings are "eloquent and vivid … [and] his notes and annotations are informative and include comparisons with Homer" (Ency. Iran.) This copy belonged to subscriber Philip Yorke, 3rd Earl of Hardwicke (1757-1834).

[Click Below for Full Description]

CLAUSEWITZ, Carl von.
Berlin: Ferdinand Dümmler, 1832–4. 3 volumes, octavo (200 × 119 mm). Contemporary brown skiver-back and tips on streaked paper boards, green morocco labels to spines, edges stained green. Externally somewhat rubbed and a little soiled, some judicious restoration to the spines and corners, tan-burn at the corners of the endpapers, pale toning to the text-blocks, but overall very good. First edition. Clausewitz's works were published posthumously, edited by his widow, and these, the first three volumes of ten, contain the first appearance of Vom Kriege (On War), his dialectical analysis of the function of war in human society. "The book is less a manual of strategy and tactics, although it incorporates the lessons learned from the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, than a general enquiry into the interdependence of politics and warfare and the principles governing either or both. published by his widow [it] won immediate recognition as the most profound exposition of the philosophy of war - a place that has never been disputed" (PMM). Carter and Muir's estimation in 1967 of the continuing relevance of Clausewitz's work is confirmed by Daniel Moran in his article on Clausewitz in The Oxford Companion to Military History (2001) where it is described as "the most important general treatment of its subject yet produced". This set with the small contemporary ink-stamps, ownership inscriptions, and press-marks of the Bibliothek der leichten Infanterie Halb-Brigade to the front endpapers, and to the title pages together with a slightly later ink-stamp of the Erstes Königlich … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contenu: Avertissement. Préface. I. Considérations générales. II. Constitution médicale et constitution épidémique du choléra. III. Des causes du choléra-morbus. IV. Symptômes du choléra. V. Des lésions cadavériques du choléra. VI. Pièces à consulter [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Gregory Greendrake [J. Coad].
Dublin. Grant and Bolton, 4, Dame-Street, and Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longman, London. 1832. Fourth Edition (First Combined Edition). 12mo. (6 ½ x 4 ½). vi, 313 pp. Alas, this copy doesn't have the frontispiece called for. Let's be generous and say this work emphasizes its excursions more than it does its angling. But it is, in places, a fine account of Irish fishing and manners, and it has a decent "Table of Flies. Most effective for Angling on the Lakes of Westmeath." To help you find your way within the book, a nineteenth century enthusiast has included an inked index to key passages, bound in at the back of the book. The book is bound in brown calf and marbled boards. The spine has been rebacked at some point. There is scattered foxing in the text, the contemporary marbled boards are rubbed with edge wear. A good-very good book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

KLAPROTH (Heinrich Julius).
