John Gould
This remarkable ornithology lithograph with hand-finished color is from the esteemed John Gould’s "The Birds of Europe". The work was published in London between 1832 and 1837. --- John Gould created nearly 3000 hand-colored plates of animals in his extensive career. Gould gained much of his knowledge by observation and experience and contributed greatly to scientific knowledge at the time. Gould is believed to have done the original sketches for all of the plates. --- The majority of this work is believed to have been drawn and lithographed by Elizabeth Gould. It was also the first time Gould employed the masterful Edward Lear. "There is no doubt that Edward Lear was the first person to understand the art of lithography, and to use it to its fullest potential. It was a legacy that granted the fabled works of Gould their success, and took them into the forefront of nineteenth-century illustration" (Tree). Of Lear's lithographs: "they are certainly among the most remarkable bird drawings ever made, it is evident that Lear endowed them with some measure of his own whimsy and intelligence, his energetic curiosity, his self-conscious clumsiness and his unselfconscious charm." (Hyman) --- Overall Very Good to Excellent. The condition of the paper and color is excellent overall with this set. Some of the lithographs may exhibit faint text offset or a minor imperfection. Nullification] South Carolina
[Columbia, S.C., 1832. 11, [1 blank] pp. Disbound, lightly foxed, blank top margin clipped from title leaf. Good+. A heated denunciation, by a group of distinguished Carolinians, of South Carolina's Ordinance of Nullification. Its "natural consequences are DISUNION AND CIVIL WAR...[W]e cannot regard the threatened destruction of a mild and rational system of liberty, without apprehensions of the keenest anxiety." The Ordinance "has insidiously assailed one of the inalienable rights of man, by endeavoring to enslave all freedom of conscience by that tyrannical engine of power-- a Test Oath," binding the individual first and foremost to the State rather than the United States. The Ordinance violates the Constitution, the rights of the citizen, and "has virtually destroyed the Union, by carefully preventing the General Government from enforcing their laws through the civil tribunal of the country, and then enacting that if the Government should pursue any other mode to enforce them, then this STATE shall no longer be a member of the Union." Thomas Taylor was President of the Convention. The four Vice Presidents included Henry Middleton and Richard I. Manning. Pages 10-11 print, in double columns, the names of about two hundred Carolinians, including James Chesnut, Henry DeSaussure, Mitchell King, Daniel and John Legare, C.G. Memminger, Alexander Moultrie, J.L. Petigru, W. Gilmore Simms. Franklin J. Moses [born Israel Franklin Moses] and James Edward Henry are listed as Secretaries of the Convention. II Turnbull 285. Pereire, Émile & Isaac.
1832. 5 volumes. Large 4to (200 x 290 mm). 4760 pp. & preliminary and final pages. Publisher's original printed wrappers. Rare, complete set with the usually lacking fifth volume. A vast collection of documents on 19th century French railways by the brothers Émile (1800-75) and Isaac Pereire (1806-80), prominent French entrepreneurs inspired by Saint-Simonian ideas. Their "complete works" were planned to run to 28 volumes, of which twelve would be dedicated to the development of French railways. Only four of these volumes actually appeared: the fifth volume here present was never brought into the trade; while some copies of the text were printed, folded and stitched, they were never equipped with preliminaries or wrappers. This final volume includes documents for the years 1851 and 1852. - The Péreire brothers were prominent Parisian financiers of Sephardi descent, rivals of the Rothschilds. As early as 1835 they founded, with Rothschild, the "Compagnie du Chemin de fer de Paris à Saint-Germain". Later they founded the Crédit Mobilier bank which specialized in mining exploration and funded the booming railway construction of the mid-19th century. - Sewing of Volume 1 somewhat loosened; wrappers chipped. Mostly uncut and untrimmed as issued. From the library of David Saul Landes (1924-2013), professor of economics and of history at Harvard University, with his ink ownership to the upper wrapper cover of the first volume. Walch 419. OCLC 24938043.

BABBAGE, Charles.
London: Charles Knight, 1832. First edition, very rare large paper issue, of Babbage's pioneering work of political economy, "a remarkable performance of a remarkable man" (Schumpeter, p. 541), and "a turning point in economic writing" (ODNB). "The first edition of On the economy of machinery and manufacturers was issued in two versions: a large-paper version, of which a small number were printed for presentation only; and the regular version of which three thousand copies were issued" (OOC). "Babbage undertook the analysis of machinery and manufacturing processes to discover ideas and techniques that could be applied to the construction of his Difference Engine no. 1, which he knew would stretch the available mechanical technology to its limits. Primary themes of the book were the division of labor and the division of mental labor, to which Babbage devoted chapters 19 and 20. His chapter on the division of mental labor was an analysis of the methods used by de Prony in the production of his celebrated mathematical tables. Babbage had seen de Prony's manuscript table in 1819, and around 1820 began planning the Difference Engine no. 1 based on the principles of division of labor. With this goal, Babbage visited factories throughout England, inspecting every machine and every industrial process. Rather than a study limited to engineering and manufacturing techniques, his book turned out to be an analysis of manufacturing processes within their economic context. Written when manufacturing was undergoing rapid development and radical change, the book represents an original cont … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Abt. - Abt. III: Beiträge zur Geschichte von Japan. - Abt. IV: Künste und Wissenschaften - Abt. Graah, Wilhelm August
Copenhagen, 1832. xviii,216pp. plus eight handcolored plates and a large folding map. Quarto. Contemporary three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Spine worn, front joint partially split. Two 20th-century bookplates, moderate foxing, folding map laid in with minor edge wear and toning. Good plus. The first edition of this important narrative, and the chief source of information concerning Greenland in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The text appeared in various translations soon after this original edition was published. Graah led an expedition to investigate what, if any, of the old European settlements survived on Greenland, and his detailed narrative is a source of archeological, ethnological and geographical data. The fine plates are mainly devoted to the Greenland Eskimos, showing boats, houses, ceremonies, and costumes, but two of the plates show the ruins of the old settlements. None of the later editions contain these superb plates. PILLING 1591. SABIN 28178. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]
