Personal ALS by Baudin veteran and later Commander-in-Chief of the French during the Mexican "Pastry War"

28 July Lyon,: 28 July, 1832.. Four page letter, single sheet folded to letter-size 258 x 207 mm., torn with small loss at original black wax seal, French postal marks, very good. A personal and revealing letter by the Baudin voyage veteran Charles Baudin, written at a time when his family fortunes were at a low ebb. After his return from the Baudin voyage Charles - no relation to Nicolas - was one of the naval officers to become a senior officer during the Napoleonic Wars. A fierce patriot, he counselled Napoleon to risk the naval blockade after Waterloo, and it is therefore not surprising that he was pushed out of the Navy, joining the merchant marine in 1816 and ultimately having great success. After the July Revolution of 1830 he rejoined the Navy, and took part in the Mexican "Pastry War" of 1838, before a long late career in the Navy which saw him promoted Admiral just before his death in 1854.Baudin has an unusual hand, but quite legible (with some patience). The letter is written to a close friend in Valenciennes, and deals predominantly with the recent loss suffered by his mother-in-law and wife, and notes that although the worst was over by April, both are still quite shaken by the death of his father-in-law. Worse, writes Baudin, financial disaster has overcome that part of the family, and its effects will be much felt, in no small part because of problems with gambling debts. Baudin is evidently troubled, and worried that it might touch his own family, and not just because of the sorrow of his wife.It is most unusual to have letters relating to the personal affairs of early voyagers, making this a fascinating glimpse into Baudin's life in the early years of his second naval career.

On Some Morbid Appearances of the Absorbent Glands and the Spleen,

London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longman,, 1832. [In] Medico-Chirurgical Transactions, published by the Medical and Chirurgical Society of London. Vol XVII. Octavo. Early 20th-century library cloth, general title to spine gilt. 4 folding plates at rear relating to other papers in the volume. Cancelled stamp of University College Hospital Medical School Library to title and top edge, plates a little marked, still a very good copy. First printing of one of the most influential papers in the history of oncology, the paper that gained its author eponymous fame, in which he described seven cases with an unusual appearance of the lymph glands and spleen. Sir Samuel Wilks made similar observations more than 30 years later, and recalling Hodgkin's earlier paper, named the disorder Hodgkin's disease. This is a remarkably rare publication, only one example having appeared at auction for 25 years: the Friedman copy, ex-Aberdeen University library which sold in 2001 for $18,000 plus premium.

1832 John E. Wool Writes to Lewis Cass

1832 - John E. Wool (1784-1844) was an officer in the U.S. Army from the War of 1812 through the American Civil War, obtaining the rank of Brigadier General in 1841. In the 1820s and early 1830s, the Army sent him to Europe to learn about others' military organization and operations. Lewis Cass (1782-1866) was an American military man and politician. In 1832, he was Secretary of War for President Jackson. This lengthy letter has superb content regarding the conclusion of the Siege of Antwerp. Wool begins, "I hasten to transmit to you the enclosed correspondence between General Chasse and Marshal Gerard," then transcribes an extract from a message dated December 24, Antwerp. In part: "The conditions of the capitulation exceed all that could have been expected; the Marshal has obtained everything that he could have obtained after a victorious assault. The garrison is to file off with drums at their head, and after having laid down their arms. surrender themselves prisoners of war." Wool goes on to offer his own opinions on Chasse's defense of the citadel, mentions an engraving of the citadel that he enclosed with the letter, and ends with friendly good wishes for Cass's family. Written on a full sheet of 9" x 14 3/4" paper, folded in half. The first and third pages of the letter are presented in the image here. A few small separations to the center fold, two of which are repaired on the interior with archival tape, one stain from an old tape repair, and a bit of light staining to the fold. The three pages of text are not affected at all, and are in fantastic shape.

Arenales was an Argentinian military, engineer and politician; as a military, he acted at the orders of San Martin at the Andes army, and then in the northern frontier and finally at the war with Brazil, probably during the last chapters of his career he obtained the information he would use to write this work. He was also chief of the topography department of Buenos Aires; the work was written by his son. Sabin, 1930, apparently never saw it.

Paris: chez l'Editeur.. Imprime par Sauniée, 1832. 19 5/16 x 23 ½ inches. A fine and rare separately issued view of the main French port on the north coast after `one of the earliest and most accomplished of English water-colourists' (DNB Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by Paul Legrand after Francia, printed by Sauniée. Francia (1772-1839) `was born at Calais…, and was brought early in life to London by his father, a refugee… He commenced to exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1795, and contributed from that year to 1821 (inclusive) eighty-five works in all to its exhibitions. He was one of the sketching society formed by Thomas Girtin about 1799… He was a member of the (now Royal) Society of Painters in Water-Colours, and for some time its secretary, but he resigned his membership, and became in 1816 an unsuccessful candidate for the associateship of the Royal Academy. The next year he retired to Calais, where he resided till his death on 6 Feb. 1839. Here he gave instruction to R. P. Bonington, whose coast scenes bear much resemblance to the later works of Francia. Francia's earlier drawings are broad and simple in execution, rich, but sombre in colour, like those of Girtin; but his later work, while still retaining its breadth and harmony, is brighter and lighter in tone, and more subtle in handling. Though he painted landscape of different kinds, his favourite subjects were shore scenes, which he executed with great truth and beauty of aerial effect. He was an excellent draughtsman of boats and shipping, and some of his drawings were engraved to illustrate a book of sketches of shipping by E. W. Cooke. He was one of the earliest and most accomplished of English water-colourists, and his works are distinguished by their fine colour and poetical feeling.' (DNB).

        Falco Candicans [Greenland Gyrfalcon]

      - London: [by the Author, 1832-1837]. Lithograph, coloured by hand, after J. Wolf and H. C. Richter, printed by Walter. (Slightly trimmed along the right side). 22 x 14 3/4 inches. A beautiful image from John Gould's The Birds of Great Britain: "A magnificent work with life-like portraits of birds of the British Isles" (Wood). This plate, from what Sacheverell Sitwell called "The most popular of all his works" (Fine Bird Books), shows a new liveliness of treatment that is not present in Gould's earlier works. This improvement is thanks to suggestions made by Joseph Wolf, who drew 57 of the plates and accompanied Gould on an ornithological tour of Scandinavia in 1856. Gould's illustrations were all painstakingly coloured by hand, as he states in his preface: "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however, is not the case: every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand; and when it is will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought."         Woodchat - Lanius rufus

London 1832 - ***If you frame up this item with Arader Galleries you can take a 50% discount off the listed price of this work of art.***This splendid hand-colored, folio size lithograph from John Gould's (1804-1881) monumental work "Birds of Europe" is in excellent condition, measures 14 ½” x 21 ½” and magnificently displays the author's scientific skill and attention to detail. John Gould was without question the most prolific natural history artist of the nineteenth century. He worked during a period of intense fascination with discoveries in natural history, especially regarding knowledge of the wildlife of exotic lands. Gould shared the romantic enthusiasm of his time for such subjects, as well as the popular impulse to catalog exotic wildlife. He combined his passion for natural history with outstanding scientific, artistic, and entrepreneurial talents. Drawing on these abilities, he embarked on a series of projects that would eventually make him the leading publisher of ornithological illustrations in Victorian Britain. Gould’s unparalleled career spanned five decades, and he produced a monumental series of books of birds throughout the world. Gould planned the Birds of Europe in an effort to redress the imbalance between the study of local and foreign ornithology. In his preface he stated his mission: “the Birds of Europe, in which we are, or ought to be, most interested, have not received that degree of attention which they naturally demand. The present work has been undertaken to supply that deficiency.” Gould portrayed birds native to Europe in a manner that had only been thought appropriate for the colorful species of distant places. In this way he managed to draw much popular interest back to native birds, which were suddenly considered equally beautiful to exotic species. Rich, vibrant color is an important attribute of the best 19th Century prints. Many prints by John Gould found on the market today have modern color that affects both the appearance and the value of these great works. John Gould died in 1881 still actively illustrating and producing fine bird books. His stock of unsold copies, unbound text and plates in various states, lithographic stones, drawings and paintings, amounted to nearly three tons. Many of the uncolored pulls from his monumental "Birds of Europe" have been recolored in the last thirty years, and these are often found on the market. Fortunately, the difference between original and modern color can be discerned by looking carefully at the print. When modern color is applied to 180 year old paper, the application is inconsistent; the cellulose of the aged paper has begun to breakdown and can no longer evenly absorb the watercolors, resulting in a splotchy uneven appearance All of the Gould bird prints in Arader Galleries' inventory have exquisite original color. The vastly superior quality of original color can be clearly differentiated from new color by its smooth and even appearance. The inks have noticeably deeper, richer tones. The difference can also be seen in the lovely surface "sheen" that results from the application of gum arabic when the lithograph was first pulled. The hand coloring of engravings and lithographs reached its zenith in the 19th Century. Works that still display their original color are more rewarding to view, and will better hold their value in the years to come.

The Rèpublic of Mexico in 1876. A political and ethnographical division of the population, character, habits, costumes and vocations of its inhabitants. Translated into English by George F. Henderson.

      - Palau 65704. Interesting work on the politics, history and ethnography of Mexico, by the Mexican scientist Antonio Garcia Cubas (1832-1912). In the third part on ethnography the focus is on several indigenous Mexican Indian families. "For a better knowledge of the races, their real characteristics, their uses and customs should be studied, as I have mentioned on another occasion, in the depths of the mountainous regions where they still preserve their ancient habits and their dialects with greater purity. Tlapacoyan at the foot of the Sierra of Tezuitlan, and Amatlan in the neighbourhood of Cordoba, both in the State of Vera Cruz, display to us the best types of the Mexican family" (pp. 67-68). The text is also clarified by tables, for example a 'Synopsis of the Indian languages of Mexico, formed according to the classification of D. Francisco Pimentel'.

THE SIAMESE TWINS. FOR [ONE] DAYS ONLY [caption title]

Ithaca: Mack and Andrus, [1832 or 1838].. Broadside, 15 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches. Some separation at folds, several closed tears at edges. Light soiling and moderate wear. Good. A promotional broadside for Chang & Eng Bunker, the original "Siamese twins." The broadside is printed with space for completing the date and times in manuscript, as has been done in the title - "one" is written in by hand. The top of the broadside has a large woodcut vignette showing the two boys, the band joining them at the center of their torsos plainly evident. The rest of the text reads, with the manuscript portions in brackets: "It is very respectfully made known to the Ladies and Gentlemen of [Salem] and its neighbourhood, that an opportunity is now offered to such as have a desire to see the young men known as the Siamese Twin Brothers, who have excited so much astonishment, and so many curious speculations among the scientifick men and the publick generally, from the extraordinary manner in which their bodies are joined together. They will be at [Mr. Henry Malls Tavern in Salem on Monday nest the 29th of October] admittance 25 cents." The hours of admission are also given, and it is advertised that "Pampohlets containing an historical account, and also a full length likeness of the twins, can be had in their room only. Price 12 1-2 cents." Chang & Eng Bunker, born in Thailand in 1811, were "discovered" by a British promoter in 1829 and taken on world tour. They eventually settled in North Carolina, in 1839, and led relatively normal lives, marrying two sisters and having between them twenty-one children. Printed in the 1830s, October 29th occurred on a Monday in 1832 and 1838, tentatively dating this broadside. Rare and interesting.

First Report of the Council of the Australian College

Sydney,: printed by Horatio Wills, at the Sydney Gazette Office,, 1832.. Octavo, 8 pp.; very good in original dark blue paper wrappers, stitch-sewn, bookplate of Australian entomologist Nancye Kent Perry (1972). Very rare, in very good original condition: the earliest report of the Australian College, and a rare Horatio Wills-printed work; Wills was the successor to Robert Howe at the Gazette. The Reverend Lang had always been interested in promoting education, opening a primary school in 1826, and planning the Australian College some time around 1831, with work on their premises in Bridge Street beginning the same year; the school 'survived with ups and downs till 1854; at its best in the late 1830s it appears to have been run very efficiently' (ADB). As this pamphlet attests, in the early days the school could certainly count on some high profile support from council members including Major Mitchell, and the great banker and benefactor Thomas Walker. This pamphlet sketches out the salient figures of the new college, with good notes on the four teachers whose employment was being sought; the Reverends Pinkerton, Anderson, Carmichael, and McGarvie (John, not his brother the printer William).Horatio Wills was an enigmatic figure. He was born in Sydney in 1811, and in 1812 his widowed mother married George Howe, printer and editor of the Gazette. His education was sketchy, and he seemed to positively dislike his step-brother Robert, the more so after Robert took over from his father and, in 1823, young Horatio became his apprentice. Over the next years he routinely absconded, but continued to work in the firm after Robert Howe's death in 1829. He took over the firm in 1832, beginning publication of The Currency Lad the same year, but he left the printery for good in June 1833; Morrison was able to list only a handful of books published over his name.Ferguson knew only his own copy and a second in the Mitchell Library.
