1832 - Esparraguera. 1832. 4h. 32X22. Primer Doc. Ref 30 Biblioteca A. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Experimental researches in electricity. Bound extracts

London, 1832-56. <p>Faraday, Michael (1791-1867). Experimental researches in electricity. 30 series of papers, plus supplement to the 11th series, extracted from Philosophical Transactions. 4to. 18 plates. [London, 1832-56]. 285 x 224 mm. Extracts bound in 1 vol., modern morocco gilt. Fine set.</p><p>First Editions. An extremely rare, fine complete set of Faraday&#39;s epochal papers on electricity, as they originally appeared in the Philosophical Transactions over 24 years. It was through his "Experimental researches" that Faraday announced his major findings relating to electricity and magnetism, the most important of which was his discovery of the means of generating electricity from electro-magnetic induction-the principle behind the dynamo and the transformer, and the foundation of the modern use of electricity. The "Experimental researches" also contain Faraday&#39;s demonstration of the identity of all forms of electricity, his discovery of the laws of electrolysis, his announcement of the fundamental relations between light and magnetism, his first general theory of electricity as a function of interparticulate strain, and his last series of researches on magnetism, containing the germ of the modern field theory, in which Faraday rejected his earlier model of the transmission of magnetic energy in favor of one locating the manifestation of magnetic energy in the field surrounding the magnet. Our set includes Faraday&#39;s 30th and final series of the "Experimental researches," published in 1856 and not included in the book-form edition (1839-55) or in the collected papers, like ours, cited as no. 64 in Dibner&#39;s Heralds of Science; this 30th series contains Faraday&#39;s papers on "Constancy of differential magnecrystallic force in different media" (no. 38), "Action of heat on magnecrystals" (no. 39), and "Effect of heat upon the absolute magnetic force of bodies" (no. 40).         Autograph 'Proposal for an Alteration in the Introductory Rule of the Unitarian Association', in a letter to Watson.

18 May ; Great Yarmouth. 1832 - Small folio, 1 p. Twenty-seven lines of text. Clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged and worn paper, with thin strip from previous mounting adhering at head of reverse, which, with two small red wax seals and two postmarks, is addressed to 'John Watson Esqr. | No. 55 & 56 | Near St. Andrew's Ch. | Holborn Hill | London'. The text is entirely devoted to the subject under the heading. In a neat exposition of his position, Alexander proposes and defends three changes. The substitution of 'promulgation' for 'promotion' would, 'as our worthy friend Dr. Channing probably would say', have 'a more quickening effect'. The greater part of the document relates to the substitution of 'Christian Unitarianism' for 'Unitarian Christianity'. (According to his obituary in 'The Christian Reformer', Alexander 'distributed 20,000 copies of a little tract called "Christian Unitarianism"'.)

Autograph letter signed to Mr. Chauvin presenting a copy of the official account of his voyage

no date but circa, no place 1832 - Single sheet of laid paper, 207 x 260 mm., folded vertically to form a letter, written in a small and neat hand to first page and addressed - but not stamped - to the last, old folds; excellent. Dumont d'Urville presents his new work to a scientific opinion-maker. Attractive letter in which the great Pacific and Antarctic explorer Dumont d'Urville presents the first parts of his official voyage account to the natural historian F.J. Chauvin of Caen, active in botanical studies in the mid-nineteenth century. Chauvin's herbarium is still held at the Université de Caen, and his name is memorialised in several plant names. In the letter, Dumont d'Urville sends Chauvin the "first two parts" of his voyage account, in the hope that they will of interest. It may be that he was sending the first parts of the historical narrative of the voyage, first published in 1830, but given Chauvin's botanical studies, it is probably fair to assume that he was being sent the two parts of the Botanie volume, edited by Lesson & Richard (I. Essai d'une Flore de la Nouvelle Zelande. II. Sertum Astrolabianum, Paris, 1832-4). Only as a postscript to the letter does Dumont d'Urville remember to offer his regards to Chauvin's wife and little girl. Dumont d'Urville had sailed on the Astrolabe (Duperrey's old ship the Coquille, renamed in honour of La Pérouse) from Toulon in April 1826. He was instructed to explore the principal island groups in the South Pacific, completing the work of the Duperrey voyage, on which the commander himself had been a naturalist. Because of his great interest in natural history, huge amounts of scientific data and specimens were collected, described and illustrated in sumptuous folio atlases. The expedition stopped at the Cape of Good Hope, passed through Bass Strait visiting Port Phillip, and arrived at Sydney on 1 December 1828. Extensive visits were made to both Sydney and Parramatta, where Dumont d'Urville visited Samuel Marsden; the expedition sailed for New Zealand in January 1827, explored Tasman Bay, found a pass between an island in Cook Strait and the northern shore of South Island (the island consequently named D'Urville and the strait French Strait) and worked up the coast of North Island, completing the 'most comprehensive exploration of the islands since Cook's death'. They made Tonga in April 1827, explored the Fiji Archipelago, New Britain and New Guinea. In November, after a stop at Amboina, they coasted along the north-west coast of Australia and reached Tasmania. In 1828 they continued to Vanikoro in search of traces of La Pérouse, and stopped at Guam in the Marianas, before returning via the Cape of Good Hope, reaching Marseille on 25 March 1829.

Viaje alrededor del mundo hecho en los años 1768, 69, 70 y 71 por el célebre Comandante del navío del Rey El Endeavour? Traducido del francés por D. Santiago de Alvarado y de la Peña

Imprenta de Don Tomás Jordan, Madrid 1832 - Six volumes, duodecimo, 6 engraved plates (one in each volume), original blue printed wrappers preserved, early owner's name on the title-pages, old stamps from Barcelona library, bookplates of José Gallart Folch; a charming set in contemporary Spanish quarter calf, gilt. Very uncommon first Spanish edition of Cook's first voyage, published in 1832 as part of a series called the "New Library of Modern Voyages useful and interesting for Spanish youth." This work has a charming series of six plates which include a scene in Tahiti featuring the Chief Mourner, two New Zealand scenes (a warrior in profile, the war canoe), and concluding with a dramatic scene on board the Endeavour. The presence of the original printed wrappers bound-in is of more than passing interest as the back wrappers give an interesting overview of how the set was marketed, being sold for 6 reales per volume as they were issued whether in Madrid or in the provinces, and stressing the value of the work for the instruction of youth. Each volume would subsequently be priced 8 reales per volume. The translator, Alvarado y de la Pen?a, based his work on the French edition. He also prepared at least one other work of Australian interest, an edition of George Barrington published in Madrid circa 1815. Beddie listed copies in the Mitchell and National Library.         Humanity to honey bees; or practical directions for the management of honey bees upon an improved and humane plan, by which the lives of bees may be preserved, and adundance of honey of a superior quality may be obtained

Wisbech: H. and J. Leach, 1832. Wisbech: H. and J. Leach, 1832. First Edition. Boards. Very good. First Edition. Boards. 8vo (200 × 130 mm), pp. xxiii, [3], 240, [2, plus advertisement slip]; folding engraved frontispiece and 12 further engravings; bookplate of Pamela Lister to the front pastedown; very good in original blue sugar-paper boards with original title label to a later paper spine. First edition of this rare work promoting the &#8216;humane'; treatment of honey bees. From an uneducated background as a draper';s assistant, Nutt claimed to have invented his collateral hive before ever reading a book on bees. &#8216;Collateral boxes had been previously described by S. White (1756), and W. Dyer (1781)';; Nutt';s other great innovation was in his use of a thermometer, &#8216;probably among the first'; to use one in his hives. (British Bee Books, p. 118).Nutt's book ran to several later editions. This first edition is scarce, however, since the list of subscribers printed after the prelims accounts for only 232 copies; it is likely, therefore, only 300 copies were printed in this edition.British Bee Books, 215.

It is the most famous of all works, paint or print, by Le Poitevin, whose "Devilries" established a genre in the wake of the Romantic school&#39;s Mephistopheles and Faust, from scenes to fright to scenes that, as here, delight with lively charm. Le Poitevin&#39;s devilries with their light, devilish humor became extremely popular with other artists, such as Michael Delaporte and Bayalos.Le Poitevin (1806-1870) was a French painter and lithographer. As a painter, he specialized in marine art , as a lithographer he is best-known today for Devilries. He was a contributor to The Journal of Painters and Charles Philpon&#39;s La Caricature. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, a pupil of Louis Hersent and Xavier Leprince. Very popular in his time, he exhibited at the Salon from 1831 until his death in 1870 ."Tout autre est Eugène Le Poitevin, le peintre de marines, qui popularise un genre bien différent mais dont le retentissement ne fut pas moins grand. As a painter, he specialized in marine art , as a lithographer he is best-known today for Devilries. He was a contributor to The Journal of Painters and Charles Philpon&#39;s La Caricature.         The Heidenmauer; or The Benedictines

London - Henry Coleburn andRichard Bentley, 1832. London - Henry Coleburn andRichard Bentley, 1832 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The Heidenmauer; or The BenedictinesA Story of the Rhineis a novel by James Fenimore Cooper, first published in 1832. First UK edition. In three volumes complete. The novel is a socio-political novel set in 16th century Germany that focuses on the competition between various socio-political classes and the tension caused by the Reformation. The Heidenmauer is Cooper&#39;s second novel in what one critic would call his European Trilogy, following The Bravo and preceding The Headsman. Like the other novels set in Europe, The Heidenmauer is intent on showing the darker side of European institutions in favour of an American perspective. James Fenimore Cooper (1789- 1851) was a prolific and popular American writer of the early 19th century. His historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature. Cooper is best remembered as a novelist who wrote numerous sea-stories and the historical novels known as the Leatherstocking Tales. Among naval historians his works on early U. S. naval history have been widely received but were sometimes criticised by Cooper&#39;s contemporaries. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans, often regarded as his masterpiece. With a booksellers&#39; label to front pastedown of volume one. Condition: In halfleather bindings with marbled paper boards. Externally, sound but with some wear to extremities and slight rubbing andmarks to boards, minor loss to spine labels, lifting slightly.         The Poetical Works of Hemans, Heber and Pollok

Philadelphia - John Grigg, 1832. Philadelphia - John Grigg, 1832 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. The collected poetical works of Reginald Heber, Felicia Hemans and Robert Pollok. Including a Memoir of Heber followed by his poetical works, The Course of Time, A Poem in Ten Books by Pollok and The Poetical Works of Mrs. Felicia Hemans. Three volumes bound in one complete. Reginald Heber (21 April 1783- 3 April 1826) was the Church of England&#39;s Bishop of Calcutta (a bishopric now part of the Church of North India) who is now remembered chiefly as a hymn-writer. Heber&#39;s hymns and other poems have style, pathos and soaring aspiration. Felicia Hemans (25 September 1793- 16 May 1835) was an English poet. Hemans&#39; works appeared in nineteen individual books during her lifetime. After her death in 1835 they were republished widely, usually as collections of individual lyrics and not the longer, annotated works and integrated series that made up her books. For surviving women poets, she was a valued model; and for male poets including Tennyson and Longfellow, an influence less acknowledged. To many readers she offered a woman&#39;s voice confiding a woman&#39;s trials; to others a lyricism apparently consonant with Victorian chauvinism and sentimentality. Robert Pollok (c. 1798- 15 September 1827) was a Scottish poet best known for The Course of Time, published the year of his death, a ten-book poem in blank verse, first published in 1827. The first edition of the poem sold 12,000 copies, and by its fourth edition it had sold 78,000 copies and become well known even in North America. Condition: In a cloth binding. Externally, generally sound but with bumping and wear to extremities. With staining and marks to boards and with facing to spine and marginally to boards. Hinges slightly strained. Internally, generally firmly bound and foxed throughout. With very slight loss and closed tear to front blank. Overall: GOOD ONLY.

The most popular of these was The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan (1824) and its sequel The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan in England (1828).       Santiago de Chile, Imprenta de la Independencia, 1832. - Small woodcut vignette of a tree on the title page. Small woodcut of an eagle at end. (1 l.), 55 pp. 4°, disbound. Small brownstain at one corner. Overall in good to very good condition. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Fascinating account of a legal dispute between Isidora Meri y Briceño, a woman over 80 years old who was lured to Santiago from her home in Tollo (in the cordillera) and persuaded to sign a document that gave her worldly goods to a much younger woman, Maria del Carmen Quintano. Meri later revoked the donation. The lawyer reviewing the case argues that Quintano unscrupulously manipulated Meri and that although Meri had filed for a divorce from her husband, Dionisio Bravo, the divorce had not been finalized so Meri could not donate her property without the husband's consent. The lawyer also argues that women should never be allowed to make legal decisions such as this donation, due to their "inesperiencia, debilidad, falta de instruccion en sus derechos."---- Briseño I, 106 (without mention of the title page). (and) Parker&#146;s &#147;New Semaphoric Signal Book.&#148; Bos. 1836. x-40, 132, 19 pp. The three paginations refer to the three parts of this work - Parker&#146;s system, Holyhead signals, and the Boston Harbor Signal Book. This work contains five hand colored plates of signal flags, and proceeds in much the same way as the earlier &#147;American Signal Book&#148; did, with numbers corresponding to vocabularies that could be looked up in the book. &#147;Addenda to 1837 is tipped onto the back pastedown. Sewing loose, illustrated covers worn. Both volumes
