The Mushroom and Champignon Illustrated, Compared with, and Distinguished from, the Poisonous Fungi that Resemble them

London: Published by J. Sowerby, Jun. 1832. First and only edition, small 4to, [8]pp., 5 fine hand-coloured plates, orig. drab wrappers with printed title label on upper cover, a very good copy in unsophisticated original condition. James de Carle Sowerby assisted his father in several works and the appearance and composition of the illustrations of the respective mushroom types in each work are similar, though not identical. Nissen, BBI 1876; Freeman, 3503. Scarce, with Copac showing only 3 copies in the UK (BL, Oxford and Natural History Museum).

        Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Halbfigürliches Porträt.

      - Radierung und Kupferstich, 1832, auf aufgewalztem China. Darstellungsgröße. 24,6:20,7 cm. Lyon. 1832, In 4 (21x26cm), 59, 28, 16, 15, 15, 39, 19, 71, 37, 17pp., relié. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

On the Economy of Machinery and Manufactures

Charles Knight, London 1832 - Small octavo, engraved title-page, original maroon cloth, neatly rebacked retaining original spine. Babbage's most successful work. Second edition of Charles Babbage's most successful work: there were four editions between 1832 and 1835 and the book was translated into at least six European languages. Babbage wrote this at the time he was working on his famous calculating machine, his first forerunner of the modern computer; his study was based on a conscientious and detailed survey of factories and workshops, both in England and on the continent. In his preface he acknowledges that the book is a direct consequence of his research and the many hours spent visiting places of manufacture in connection with the development of the calculating machine.Babbage's work reflects his broader preoccupations with scientific and industrial life, political economy, and philosophy, which is perhaps why is was so successful with the general reading public. He advocated the decimalization of currency, foresaw the role of tidal power as an energy source, and predicted the exhaustion of coal reserves, later commenting that if posterity failed to find a substitute for coal then it deserved to be frostbitten. This small volume was a turning point in economic writing and firmly established Babbage as a leading authority of the industrial movement.Various handwritten notes on inside page pertaining to the rarity of the book and a private lending label adhered to front laid-down endpaper.         Domestic Manners of the Americans.

London: For Whittaker, Treacher, & Co., 1832. - 2 volumes. 8vo., (7 ¼ x 4 ¾ inches). Fine lithographed frontispiece in each volume, 22 lithographed plates (very occasional spotting). Contemporary half tan calf, marbled boards, the spines in six compartments separated by five gilt-ruled raised bands, red and black morocco gilt lettering pieces in two, bound by "Carss, Glasgow" (J. Carss & Co., 19th century, Glasgow, Scotland) with their binder's ticket (boards of volume one detached, hinges of volume two cracked but holding, extremities worn). Provenance: With the contemporary bookplate of Charles-Francis Stuart (b. 1780), younger son of Alexander, 10th Lord Blantyre. From the distinguished library of Wolfgang A. Herz, his bookplate on front pastedowns, his sale, Christie's 12/9/2009, lot number 266. Herz. First edition. A satirical (and rather unflattering) look at 19th-century American society by the mother of Anthony Trollope, with 24 (in all) humorous illustrations. "Trollope's book became a best-seller in England and caused an instant sensation when it appeared in the United States. As with earlier travel volumes that took an uncharitable view of the American republic, critics spied an ulterior motive. The book had been released during the parliamentary debates over the Reform Bill, prompting speculation that it was intended as yet another Tory indictment of democratic institutions Despite hostile reviews, public reaction proved to be more amused than indignant, the sheer mean-spiritedness of Trollope's memoir making it difficult to take seriously as a valid indictment of American society. "With the release of 'Domestic Manners,' the British critique against the United States was largely complete. Subsequent visitors would provide additional anecdotal detail, but for the most part they would do little more than echo the criticisms leveled by Trollope and her predecessors. In the compendium of republican shortcomings compiled by British travelers, one issue stood out as the root cause of the behaviors they abhorred: an unceasing pursuit of the main chance. What had come to be known in the colloquial parlance of the new nation as a 'go-ahead' spirit, the foreign visitor regarded as an unrelenting quest for money and material goods. The leveling impulse of democracy had failed to produce great achievements in the arts, conservative Britons averred, for all beauty and elegance had been trampled underfoot in the headlong rush to pay homage to the great god of commerce. Too busy in their pursuit of profit either for personal reflection or meaningful social intercourse, Americans lacked wit, erudition, or any appreciation for aesthetics. Even the common courtesies that had become the hallmarks of European bourgeois respectability seemed to have no place among a people whose one consuming passion was their own self-interest. What was worse, in such a rampantly acquisitive society, dishonesty and selfishness had become virtues; shrewdness and 'smart dealing' (an American euphemism for deceptive business practices) passed for intellect. Always wanted more, they seemed to Britons a restless, humorless, unhappy people, a nation of bottom feeders devoted to the bottom line" (Sam Walter Haynes, "Unfinished revolution: The Early American Republic in a British World").         An original manuscript page from James Fennimore Cooper's final work of fiction, the 1833 novel, The Headsman

[Paris], c. 1832. 9.5" x 14.25". "Autograph Manuscript, 2 pages, 9.5"" x 14.25"", [Paris, c. 1832-1833], a pair of draft pages of his 1833 novel, The Headsman, or the Abbaye of Vigneron, published just before he returned to the United States following an eight year sojourn in Paris. Moderate toning and dampstains, minor losses at corners and marginal tears expertly repaired and in-filled, else very good condition. Cooper's 1933 novel about the political and emotional consequences of the hereditary position of the ""headsman"", or public executioner, takes place in the 18th century near the Swiss-Italian border. The present manuscript, which covers the content found from pages 159 to 166 of the 1833 Paris edition, contains a conversation between the future baroness Adelheid de Willading and the commoner Sigismund Steinbach, the son of the current headsman. Adelheid and Sigismund wish to defy ""the system"" and marry each other. This was the last of several works Cooper completed and published during his eight-year stay in France. While he was ostensibly employed as the United States Consul at Lyons, he resided mainly in Paris. Cooper derived inspiration for the novel's setting from several extended trips to Switzerland undertaken between 1828 and 1832. The Headsman would be his final work of fiction?"upon his return from Europe, he produced primary political and historical works including a two-volume travelogue, Sketches of Switzerland (1836). Constance Ayers Denne, in a 1974 article characterized Cooper's novel as a ""genuine 'literary work of art.'"" She explained that ""a close scrutiny of this novel reveals a coherent unity at the heart of its structural complexity."" While at its heart, The Headsman is a sociopolitical critique, Denne noted that ""in wholeness of conception reveals not only Cooper's artistry but also much about his method of creation."" (Denne, ""Cooper's Artistry in the Headsman,"" Nineteenth-Century Fiction 29:1, June 1974, p. 77) Some have theorized that the basis of The Headsman was loosely based on the 1831 novel Jésus-Christ en Flandres by Honoré de Balzac. While Balzac himself credited Cooper's writing as an inspiration of his own work, there is no evidence that Cooper was personally acquainted with the output of the French author?"though he was fluent enough in French to read him. (Thomas R. Palfrey, ""Cooper and Balzac: The Headsman,"" Modern Philology, 29, Feb. 1932, p. 335) Balzac had become acquainted with Cooper's work when the American author's works became popular in France in the 1820s. Works such as The Spy and Last of the Mohicans became wildly popular there after they were translated into French. Balzac summarized it best when he said, ""Cooper a été bien compris, il a été surtout apprécié par la France"" (""Cooper was understood, it was mostly enjoyed by France."") That popularity was only magnified during his residence in France beginning in 1826: ""He was lionized from within a few weeks after his first arrival"" in Paris, ""Later, he presided at meetings and banquets and was undoubtedly a figure ... among the cultured."" (E. Preston Dargan, ""Balzac and Cooper: Les Chouans,"" Modern Philology, 1915, pp. 1-3)A similar manuscript leaf from the same work fetched $6,250 at Christies in 2012."

HURSTMONCEUX CASTLE Two watercolours, Front view and Ground plan.

1832 - Watercolours on paper. Front view, 31.5 x 21 inches. Ground plan, 21.25 x 21 inches. Signed on front, R.W.Billings, 1832. Titled on back, Hurstmonceaux Castle and priced at œ44. Signed, R.W.Billings. Date on front, 1440 is date of Billings' reconstruction drawing. The front view watercolour is an historical reconstruction of the architects's expert analysis of the castle as originally completed in 1440. To it he has added some contemporary figures, including three workmen on the left, one of them up a ladder. Standing on the bridge over the moat are several red coated soldiers and some ladies, who appear to be sightseeing. The ground plan is an outline (the castle having no interior walls at this time) but contains some detail of the gatehouse and also marks the well. Robert William Billings (1813-1874) was an architect and author, born in London. His best known publication was The Baronial and Ecclesiastical Antiquities of Scotland (4 vols, 1845-52) but he also produced numerous other works on cathedral and church architecture and on castles. Much of his graphic work was reduced down for the use of engravers. He was elected an associate of the Institute of British Architects in 1835 and many of the drawings he prepared for publication are now in the RIBA Library. Herstmonceux Castle, East Sussex, was rebuilt by Sir Roger Fiennes, a royal official in the household of King Henry VI in 1440, as a sumptuous country residence, with a pseudo-defensive facade. The interior was dismantled in 1777 to build a manor house nearby and the castle remained a picturesque ruin until it was reconstructed as a residence, 1913-33. It provided a library and offices for the Royal Observatory, located on this site, 1957-88, and since 1994 Herstmonceux has been an International Study Centre for Queen's University, Ontario. This painting has been extracted from an album used by several generations of the family of Thomas Law Hodges at his properties of Hemsted and Jennings, near Maidstone. They had intermarried into many of the other local landed families and were in the habit of visiting each other's houses and estates, inluding Herstmonceux. Hodges was Liberal MP for Kent from 1830-32 and for West Kent from 1832 until the dissolution of Parliament in 1841; he was again elected in 1847 and sat until defeated in 1852. He died 14 May 1857. Hodges is listed in Pigott's Directory for 1840 as living in Benenden; Hemsted House was subsequently sold and demolished by its new owner, Gathorne Hardy, later Lord Cranbrook and replaced by a new building which is the basis for Benenden School, one of the top private girls' schools in the country. An impressive and evocative watercolour of this magnificent early brick castle. TOPOGRAPHY SUSSEX 19TH CENTURY WATERCOLOUR ENGLISH SUSSEX ARCHITECTURE TOPOGRAPHY

Cfr. Vicaire, "Bibliographie gastronomique", 899. Westbury, pp. 69-70. Bitting, "Gastronomic Bibliography", 540: "The work is the adaptation of French methods in Italian ingredients, and is comprehensive in its scope". Catalogo B.I.N.G., I, n. 633.
