Landscape study of rocks, shrubs and trees

0.. Pencil sketch, 250 x 150mm., wove paper, signed 'Ann Piper', with manuscript poem of nine lines to reverse, initialled and dated 'J.P. March 21st 1831, (i.e. Jane Piper); slightly browned, very good condition. Framed. Attractive landscape study in pencil of an Australian scene, most likely in the Sydney region, by Mary Ann Piper (circa 1790-1871), wife of the prominent military officer and settler John Piper (1773-1851).Piper was commissioned as an Ensign in the newly formed New South Wales Corps and arrived in New South Wales aboard the Pitt in 1792. In 1793 he requested a transfer to Norfolk Island, possibly to avoid a scandal, but returned to Sydney in 1795 after distinguished service. A close associate of John Macarthur, Piper stood as a second for him in a duel with their commanding officer William Paterson; Piper was arrested and tried by court-martial in 1802 but was acquitted. In 1804 he returned to Norfolk Island, where he is thought to have commenced his liaison with Mary Ann Shears. 'Legend has grown up like a hedge of thorns about this girl until it seems impossible to discover the truth' (M. Barnard Eldershaw, The Life and Times of Captain John Piper, p. 27). The daughter of James Shears and Mary Wilson, two First Fleet convicts transferred to Norfolk Island, she was approximately 15 years old when Piper declared his love. Colonial records indicate she had borne two sons when the couple left for in England in 1811 and a further two children by the time of their return to Australia in February 1814. They married two years later on 10 February 1816.Ann Piper - as she was usually known - went on to become an important and cultured figure in the colony, painted in great state by Augustus Earle in the 1820s. The present sketch shows that she was versed in the skills of topographical drawing, and seems to date from around 1831, the date of a charming poem by the Piper's eldest daughter Jane to the reverse. Although uncaptioned, the scene with its accurate rendering of weathered sandstone is very reminiscent of formations in the Sydney region. We have not previously seen any work by Ann Piper and this slight sketch captures in a rare artistic way a higher ideal of daily life enjoyed by only few colonial women.

1831. Breese, Sidney [1800-1878], Compiler. Reports of Cases at Common Law and in Chancery, Argued and Determined in the Supreme Court of the State of Illinois, From its First Organization in 1819, To the End of December Term 1830. Kaskaskia: Printed by Robert K. Fleming, 1831. xii, [4], 333, 39 pp. Octavo (9" x 5-1/2"). Contemporary sheep, blind fillets and lettering piece to spine. Moderate rubbing, some wear to extremities, early owner bookplate and annotations to front pastedown. Moderate toning to text, faint dampstaining and foxing in a few places. "Presented to Judge Mayes by his friend Lewis V. Bogy of Missouri--1833" to head of title page, interiors otherwise clean, contemporary annotations in pencil to a few leaves. * First edition. This is the first compilation of Illinois Supreme Court cases. Though not authorized, the state sanctioned the publication by subscribing to 150 copies. It was reprinted with additions in 1861 and 1877. Breese was an estimable Illinois jurist who gained national prominence for his decision in Munn v. Illinois, upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, favoring the regulatory power of the state over business corporations. His fifty-year career spanned the legal and political development of Illinois. Mayes [1792-1861] was an important Kentucky legislator, judge and dean of the law school at Transylvania University. Bogy [1813-1877], apparently at the time one of Mayes's students, graduated the law school in 1835 and went on to become a leading figure in Missouri politics. Wallace, The Reporters 573.

A FINE COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR BOTANICAL DRAWINGS

1831-1858. 223 fine original watercolour botanical drawings (11 5/8 x 9 inches), each inscribed by the artist with their Latin name, common name, and where and when the specimen was collected. Preserved in 5 modern vinyl folders with pockets. Provenance: with correspondence to and from the Misses A. and F. Wilkinson and the British Museum (Natural History), Department of Botany, dated 1962; with correspondence to and from Mrs D.M.P. Phillips and the Glasgow Museums and Art Galleries regarding an exhibition of the watercolours in 1974. An exceptionally fine and comprehensive collection of original watercolour drawings of British flowers by Elizabeth Twining, the second of nine children of Richard Twining (1772-1857) the celebrated tea-merchant and banker. A carte de visite signed by Twining and dated 1886 is enclosed, as is a complete index, hand and type-written. "She was a talented portraitist of plants and flowers as well as being a competent botanist. The two-volume folio edition of her 'Illustrations of the Natural Orders of Plants' (2 vols., 1849) is considered to have a place among the finest lithographic flower books of the mid-nineteenth century. The 'natural order' is that of Alphonse de Candolle, who rejected the Linnaean or 'artificial' classification. The emphasis on the appearance of mature plants and their habitat rather than their physiology is echoed not only in her art but also in her lectures on plants, which as well as having a strong geographical theme also discussed how plants were used, particularly by women. She believed botany had a place in the education of women of all social classes and her approach was that of 'mother educator', whether she was encouraging the poor to grow plants for flower shows or promoting the cultivation of window boxes in institutions such as workhouse wards, where the glory of plants could be shared by sick inmates and staff alike" (Theresa Deane for DNB). Twining's original watercolours for the "Natural Orders of Plants" are held in the extensive collection of botanical art at the Natural History Museum in London. They were gifted to the Museum in 1962 by the Misses A. and F. Wilkinson. Edward Finden executed some separate works, among early ones being a set of etchings for Richard Duppa's Miscellaneous Opinions and Observations on the Continent and Illustrations of the Vaudois in a Series of Views. He was also a large contributor of illustrations to the annuals, books of beauty, poetry, and other sentimental works then in vogue. Complete in twenty volumes, with the additional volume one of the description of plates. Condition: All volumes are in their original publishers' paper wraps. Externally, all volumes are affected by light chipping, and slight loss to the spines. Some light marks to the front and rear panels. Three volumes have strained hinges.         The Narrative of a Voyage to the Swan River

London,: F.C. Westley, 1831.. Octavo, with a frontispiece map; an excellent copy in an attractive brown crushed morocco binding by Sangorski. First edition: rare. The first book, properly so-called, to describe newly-settled Western Australia, Powell's work was preceded only by some very scarce emigration tracts published in 1830.Powell's book is well known for the frontispiece map "A Plan of Swan River Settlement, and the Surrounding Country", which shows the coastline from Geographe Bay to just north of the Swan River, noting particularly Perth, "Freemantle", and the intended town of Clarence, as well as clearly delineating Rottnest Island. The "narrative and account are compiled from several letters addressed by a young man of respectability (now resident at the Swan River) to his relations in England... no statement is presented herein which is not in strict accordance with the truth" (author's advertisement). Powell dedicated the book to the conservative statesman Sir Robert Peel, whose cousin Thomas Peel was an influential settler.Powell's letters were dated from Fremantle in November, 1829.Ferguson, 1467.

Catalogue de la Bibliothèque de son Exc. M. le Comte D. Boutourlin

Engraved arms on title. [482] pp. 8vo, orig. printed boards (boards a bit soiled, extremities a little worn), uncut. Florence: [Privately Printed], 1831. Limited to 200 copies only, privately printed, on strong and large "papier vélin." Buturlin (1763-1829), Russian soldier, military historian, politician, librarian of the Imperial Russian Library, and one of the most outstanding book collectors of 19th century Russia, had formed earlier an important library but it was unfortunately destroyed during the burning of Moscow in 1812. The present catalogue describes Buturlin's very large second collection, formed during his retirement in Florence, which Brunet describes as being superior to the first. It contained 244 important early MSS., 964 15th-century books (many of which were unrecorded), very complete Aldine and Bodoni collections, and other outstanding later items. 7929 items in all are described. Edited by E.L.J.E. Audin. This is the first time I have had this catalogue with the original printed boards; it normally appears in printed wrappers or entirely rebound. Very good copy in original state. Occasional foxing. From the library of Jean Viardot. ❧ Brunet, I, 1642-43. Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, col. 422-He "réunit un grand nombre d'ouvrages bien choisis." .

[Computers] Table of the Logarithms of the Natural Numbers From 1 To 108000

London: Printed for B Fellowes, Ludgate Street. 1831., 1831. Second Edition, being the First Corrected Edition; the earlier printing featured nine errors which, given the content, were crucial. Tall octavo pp. xx, 202, [1 imprint]. A very attractive copy in a most elaborate full binding (for a table of logarithms) of straight-grain green morocco with heavy silk endpapers, all edges gilt with inner gilt dentelles; possibly a presentation binding (although unsigned) -both boards are intricately tooled with a geometric design of gilt rings. Later bookplate of historian Wilhem Voss of Hamburg-Altona to pastedown, some faint dampstaining to margin of first and final leaves, some sunning to covers. Very good indeed. Babbage is known for his advocacy of the "difference engine" an early calulating device and precursor of the modern computer.

Chez H. Scheurleer 1831 In 16, pp. (4) + 164; 284; 4 (ripiegate). Three Puzzle Plates: Purcell's Lithographic Drawing Book, "China" & "Crockery"; Figures of Fun, "The Fruiterer

London: Charles Tilt, 1831-1833. Fine. Three lithographic puzzle-plates, hand-colored with added gum Arabic. "China", 7 by 8½ inches, depicts a man smoking a pipe, with a body of china plates, containers, dishes, bowls, cups, saucers, vases and his hand a teapot. "Crockery", also 7 by 8½ inches, shows a woman made up from jugs, ewers, plates, teapot and sauce boats. Both "China" and "Crockery" are from Purcell's Lithographic Drawing Book, London, 1831. "The Fruiterer" is slightly larger at 7½ by 8½ inches and shows a lady with a dress of grapes, cantaloupe (?), lemon slice, plums, arms of melon, headdress of cherries and strawberries. The illustration is from Figures of Fun, London, 1833. All prints were sometime mounted on card and are now matted in 11 by 13 inch mats. Light age toning else in fine condition. Scarce; the books from which these are taken are rare. Only a handful of copies of "Figures of Fun" have been located, nearly all of them incomplete. See Gumulchain, 2527, describing this book for children as "so rare, that this is the only complete copy ... that has come to our notice. The work is inspired by 17th century French engravings done in the same spirit." No copies of "Purcell's Lithographic Drawing Book" have been located; the publication information is taken from Tilt's advertisement in "Landscape Illustrations of the Waverly Novels", London, 1831. The three prints are housed in a custom clamshell case.

Leipzig: Baumgartners Buchhandlung, 1831-32. 248 x 207 mm. Marbled boards c. 1832, a little worn, small splits in hinges. Minor foxing & browning, but very good. First Edition of the entire run of Radius's weekly cholera newspaper, published during the second cholera pandemic of the 19th century, which began in India in 1826 and by 1831-32 had extended via trade routes to Europe, Great Britain and America. "Cholera was the classic epidemic disease of the nineteenth century, as plague had been for the fourteenth" (quoted in Spink, Infectious Diseases, p. 162); it has been described as "the sanitarian's best friend" (Spink, p. 164), since fear of cholera did more to stimulate the growth of public health and sanitary reform during the 19th century than any other communicable disease. Radius's newspaper includes descriptions of cholera outbreaks in different European cities and in America, lists of books and articles on cholera, articles on the medical and public health aspects of the disease, etc. Scarce-NUC NA 0189361 and OCLC cite runs of the Allgemeine Cholera-Zeitung in only four North American libraries (Harvard, U.
