        Political Letters and Pamphlets,

      - London- William Carpenter, 1831 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce copy of this collection of pamphlets by William Carpenter. With his publication of this work, Carpenter attempted to defy the stamp duty on newspapers, but in May 1831 he was tried and convicted of evading the law and was imprisoned. With a portrait of Carpenter bound in, and many small illustrations. William Carpenter, born in 1797 at St James, Westminster, London, England, died on April 21, 1874 at Islington, London, was a 19th Century theological and political writer, journalist, and editor. Carpenter was the son of a London tradesman. He received no formal schooling, but by self-study he taught himself several ancient and modern languages. At an early age he began working for a bookseller in Finsbury, first as an errand boy, and then as an apprentice. While in prison, he edited a political magazine which was republished as Carpenter's Monthly Political Magazine in 1832. He became intensely involved in the cause of political reform, publishing numerous tracts and books on the subject through the late 1840s. He was a strong proponent of the Chartist movement and a friend of William Cobbett. He was also an active Freemason and contributor to the London Freemason magazine. He continued to publish scriptural works throughout his life, which were also popular in America. His The Israelites Found in the Anglo-Saxons (1874) was an early work on British Israelism. Condition: In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, worn with slight straining to front hinges. Internally, generally firmly bound but with one or two pages starting. Marksand curling to some pages with the occasional ink stamp. Overall: GOOD ONLY.

        Illinois and Missouri

Philadelphia: H. S. Tanner, 1831. Folding pocket map, copper-engraved by Tanner, period hand colouring in outline. Within original roan covers, covers bordered in gilt, the upper cover titled in gilt 'Illinois & Missouri'. (Short separations at folds, light offsetting). 22 3/4 x 27 inches. A rare pocket map issue of Tanner's map of Illinois and Missouri. Henry Tanner's A New American Atlas was the most distinguished atlas published in America during the nineteenth century. The maps were carefully constructed from the best and most recent surveys. They were finely engraved on a large-scale, printed on high quality paper, and carefully hand colored. Tanner's map of Illinois and Missouri, done in 1823, was one of the earliest maps to show Illinois and Missouri as American states. A second edition of the atlas, including the map, was published in 1825 with significant revisions to the mapping of the headwaters of the Mississippi and significant additions. Besides publishing his maps within the two editions of his great atlas, Tanner offered the maps separately in pocket map format. The separately-issued pocket maps by Tanner are less frequently encountered than the sheet maps removed from his atlas. This copy of his pocket map of Illinois and Missouri dates to 1831 and shows a number of improvements and alterations compared to the previous editions. Interestingly, there are manuscript additions to this map in Ashington, St. Francis, Perry and Cape Girardeau counties in Missouri, where platted blocks of land have been shaded presumably by an early land owner. Cf. Rumsey, 4862.023 (1833 edition); cf. Phillips, Atlases, 1376 (1833 edition); cf. Ristow, American Maps and Mapmakers, pps. 191-198.

        Paris and its Environs

London: Jennings and Chaplin,, 1831. Displayed in a series of Two Hundred Picturesque Views, from Original Drawings, taken under the direction of A. Pugin, Esq. The engravings executed under the superintendance of Mr. C. Heath. With topographical and historical descriptions. Two volumes, quarto (267 × 210 mm). Contemporary orange half calf, spines in compartments with gilt and blind tooling, grey cloth sides stamped with geometric pattern, blind and gilt rules to sides, red speckled edges. Engraved title pages, and numerous engraved plates (each with two views) throughout. Bookseller's ticket. Spines sunned, some scratches and marks to covers, patterned cloth repair to hinges, with a bookplate tipped in at each, some light spotting throughout, but overall in very good condition. An attractively bound early edition of architect Augustus Pugin's attractive visual record of his native Paris, with both French and English descriptive text to the beautiful plates. The publication is very much part of the English enthusiasm for Parisian tourism which began to thrive after the defeat(s) of Napoleon, a vogue recently commemorated at the Wallace Collection's exhibition: The Discovery of Paris: Watercolours by Early Nineteenth-Century British Artists. The project was first published by Robert Jennings alone in 1829, and in this edition the plates are dated 1828-31, engraved title page of each volume dated 1830 and 1831 respectively, title pages both dated 1831.

ORNITHOLOGICAL BIOGRAPHY, OR AN ACCOUNT OF THE HABITS OF THE BIRDS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Edinburgh. 1831-1839.. Five volumes. A few in-text illustrations. Half title in third, fourth, and fifth volumes. Large thick octavos. 20th-century cloth, spines gilt. An occasional bit of tanning or a fox mark, but generally quite clean internally. Very good. This is Audubon's text, designed to accompany the elephant folio edition of THE BIRDS OF AMERICA, giving sketches of the birds described therein. Of great interest are Audubon's accounts of his travels and adventures in the American hinterland, scattered through the volumes as part of the bird descriptions and as separate anecdotes. Includes accounts of his experiences in the Florida Keys, along the Mississippi, and in Louisiana and Kentucky in the 1820s and '30s. Audubon published the text separately from the double elephant folio plates in order to avoid a stricture of the British Copyright Act of 1709, which would have required him to deposit a set of the plates with each of nine depository libraries in the United Kingdom. The publication date on the titlepage of the fifth volume is incorrectly printed as "1849." One of the classic texts of American natural history and travel. HOWES A389, "aa." MEISEL III, p.406. SABIN 2366. CLARK II:179 (ref). SERVIES 1532, 1677, 1743, 2120, 2302.

The Reformers Attack on the Old Rotten Tree - or the Foul Nests of the Cormorants in Danger (Printed Silk Ephemera)

1831. Softcover. Good. London, ca. 1831. Original printed silk scarf. Approximately 31 X 32" including small margins, with a large central design partly printed in colors depicting the parliamentary battle over the Reform Bill of 1832. Some spotting and stains, occasional tear or worn spot resulting in brief losses. Fragile and very scarce British political ephemera from the period just prior to the Victorian era. The large tree in the image is identified as the "Rotten Borough System" in which over a dozen nesting cormorants (each bearing the name of a particular Member of Parliament) are threatened with the need for a new home as a throng of several dozen men attack the tree's trunk with broad axes. The death of George IV in 1830 and the ascension of William IV to the throne opened the door for reformers to demand changes in the government. Legislation was passed in 1832 which helped to shift representation in Parliament from the gentry to the populace, and was instrumental in transforming Britain from an aged colonial power into the industrial empire that dominated the world's economy. Oxford appears to have a copy at the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford: John Johnson Collection. See our pictures.

Remarks Made on a Tour to Prairie du Chien; thence to Washington City, in 1829

Columbus: Isaac N. Whitting, 1831. First. hardcover. [3], vi-vii, [blank], [1], 1, 296pp. (untrimmed pages are uniformly toned). 12mo, rebound in full beige morocco; burgundy leather spine label, lettered in gilt. Columbus, O: Isaac N. Whitting, 1831. First edition. Nothing indicating the mission of Atwater appears on the title, yet the real object of the tour was to procure as Commissioner of the government, a cession of the title of the Winnebago, Potawatomi, Chippewa, and Ottawa Indians in the rich mineral lands, now forming the State of Wisconsin and part of Illinois. Much the greater part of the work is devoted therefore to a narration of the peculiarities of those tribes which he visited, biography of some of their cheifs, Indian poetry, specimens of their language, and incidents of his associations with them". -Field 54. Atwater was "a social and intellectual pioneer of the Middle West, and perhaps the first advocate of forest conservation; he was one of the first to predict the success of the railway, the first historian of his state [Ohio] and the founder of its school system". -DAB; ; Howes A379; Sabin 2335.

        Notre-Dame de Paris

Paris: Gosselin,, 1831. 2 volumes, octavo (220 × 137 mm). Uncut in contemporary quarter calf, rebacked with original spines laid down, black spine labels, sprinkled paper-covered boards, preserved in a half-morocco folding case. Each title-page with a wood-engraved vignette by Tony Johannot. Binding extremities worn, some foxing or browning, but still a very good copy. First edition, first impression. According to the publisher's own statement in the Journal des débats (10 May 1831), the first impression of 1,100 copies was separated into four groups, each bearing a fictitious "édition" statement on the title-page, a scheme designed to make the public believe that the novel was selling rapidly. All four "éditions" are textually identical (witness the identical pagination errors on II, 439 ["339"] and 491 ["391"]). The title-page of this copy reads "Quatrième édition".

A GENERAL CIRCULAR TO ALL PERSONS OF GOOD CHARACTER, WHO WISH TO EMIGRATE TO THE OREGON TERRITORY, EMBRACING SOME ACCOUNT OF THE CHARACTER AND ADVANTAGES OF THE COUNTRY; THE RIGHT AND THE MEANS AND OPERATIONS BY WHICH IT WILL BE SETTLED

Charlestown. 1831.. 27,[1]pp. 20th-century mottled calf, gilt with leather labels. Original wrappers bound in at rear. Boards scuffed, labels a bit chipped. Ownership inscription on front flyleaf, modern ownership ink stamp on titlepage and front wrapper. Minor soiling. Untrimmed. Very good. This is the first major proposal by visionary promoter Kelley, all of whose schemes came to nothing, but whose ideas encouraged many others. This pamphlet outlines his well reasoned plan for settlements in Oregon near the mouth of the Columbia River, with a woodcut plan of one of the proposed settlements printed on the last page. Kelley tried to obtain the assistance of the ministry in promoting his plan, with assurance of converting the Indians. This copy retains the original wrappers, noting a price of 12 1/2 cents on the front wrapper, and giving a list of agents on the verso. At the end of the text Kelley calls on newspaper publishers to print his circular in their papers as a public service. WAGNER-CAMP 44a. STREETER SALE 3345. HOWES K43, "b." TWENEY 89, 39 (note).         Lease in Elizabeth Street Hobart

Hobart Town,, 1831.. Vellum document measuring 341 x 417 mm. with circular paper seal to the top left-hand corner; letterpress with manuscript additions by a notary and signatures to the bottom margin. A fine parchment lease fully signed by Lieutenant-Governor George Arthur and the Colonial Secretary John Montagu. The grant awards 34 perches of land in Elizabeth street Hobart to lawyer George Brooks Legrew Hesse for the stated rent of 17 shillings per annum.Hesse was a lawyer who disappeared in unknown circumstances exploring wild country inland of Port Phillip in 1837. Hesse was accompanied by Joseph Tice Gellibrand, prominent member of the Port Phillip Association and a former Attorney General of Van Diemen's Land who had run foul of Arthur. Despite an extensive search the fate of the two men was never revealed. At the time it was conjectured they may have been speared by Aboriginals or perished in the wilderness after their horses bolted.Although little is known of Hesse's professional activities in Hobart and the Port Phillip district, manuscript additions by court registrars on the reverse of this grant reveal the Hesse defaulted on payment of the annual rent of 17 shillings from the commencement of the lease. One notation refers to a Government Notice published in the Hobart Town Gazette on 7 October 1836 of unpaid arrears on the property exceeding four pounds. In addition to the signatures of the Colonial Secretary and Lieutenant-Governor, the lease features a beautifully preserved Van Diemen's Land blind-stamped paper seal incorporating the Royal Arms. It is a fine example of colonial printing upon a large vellum sheet with very ample margins. The letterpress itself gives some insight into Arthur's sense of his own magisterial largesse. The lease concludes as follows (here interspersed with manuscript notations regarding the date of its issue): '...Witness our trusty and well-beloved Colonel George Arthur our Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen's Land and its Dependencies at Hobart Town in the said Island the Twenty sixth day of September in the seventh year of our reign.'.

ABPC records no copies seen at auction since at least 1923."Henry Heath (fl. 1822–1842), caricaturist, is a shadowy figure. Because of a similarity in style between William and Henry Heath and their collaboration on three prints, it has been suggested that they were related, even as brothers (George, Catalogue, 9.liv). Henry Heath etched theatrical portraits from 1822 and both social and political caricatures from 1824, his work being published by Fores and Gans. In 1831 he started to imitate the political caricatures of HB, changing from etching to lithography and adopting the monogram HH. About this time various sets of his comic vignettes in the manner of George Cruikshank were issued and were collected in 1840 under the title of The Caricaturist's Sketch Book; in the 1830s he also drew cockney sportsmen, following the example of Robert Seymour. One cartoon by him was published in Punch in 1842. In the same year he drew some amusing caricatures of Queen Victoria's visit to Scotland, after which, according to M. H. Spielmann (The History of Punch, 1895, 452), he emigrated to Australia. Dorothy George called him ‘a competent and versatile but very imitative caricaturist’ (George, Catalogue, 10.xliv)" (Oxford Online DNB).Not in Abbey or Tooley. [Attributes: First Edition]
