Ganka kinno [trans.: Causes, Diagnoses, and Treatments of Eye Diseases]

Woodcut illus. in the text. Printed on double leaves, oriental style. Four vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block printed title label on upper cover, stitched as issued in the oriental style. Edo: 1831. [with]:--. Zoku Ganka kinno [trans.: Causes, Diagnoses, and Treatments of Eye Diseases, Second Series]. Woodcut illus. in the text (several are color printed). Two vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block printed title label on upper cover, stitched as issued in the oriental style. Edo: 1837. First edition. "In 1831 Fuichi or Shinichi or Toshiatsu Honjo (died 1846) published his Ganka kinno, a Japanese work in four volumes comparing the theory and practice of Chinese and European (Dutch) ophthalmological methods. After the usual series of commendatory prefaces, that book presented the gross anatomy of the eye with particular reference to the ocular muscles and the optic nerve; following that, the description of the geometrical optics of the eye: the projection of an external object on the retina; and the degree or range of normal vision, from myopia to hyperopia, in relation to the curvature of the crystalline lens. All of these descriptions were illustrated with colored woodblock prints. Of unique interest is an illustration showing the different appearances of the doko ('apple of the eye' = the pupil) in the successive stages in the making of artificial eyes. Volumes 1 and 2 presented diseases or abnormal conditions of the external or accessory structures of the eye (e.g. the eyelids) and treated of trauma, trachoma and acute conjunctivitis. Volume 3 elaborated the diseases and pathology of the internal eye (i.e. the eyeball). Volume 4 consisted entirely of prescriptions for the treatment of eye diseases. At that time in Japan ophthalmological science was a combination or admixture of Chinese and Dutch knowledge, and the Ganka kinno was considered the best monograph on that practice... "A continuation of that work by Fuichi Honjo appeared in 1837 under the title Zoku ganka kinno, in two volumes. That was a sort of clinical section to the earlier work. A series of wood-block illustrations, some in color, showed a variety of ophthalmological instruments, with textual descriptions of their use, and pictures of their application. For example, an instrument for applying medicine to the eye was made by tying a bag containing the medicine around the end of a wooden handle, and used by squeezing it against the eye with the head tilted backward. An eye-dropper, syringes, and a magnifying glass for use by the oculist were figured. Ophthalmological instruments consisted of various kinds of spoons, tubes, loops, forceps, scissors, needles, lances, knives, and clamps. Illustrations of each of these are shown. Retractors for the eyelids were of bamboo or of copper. Metallic instruments (cautery irons) to be heated in a charcoal fire were shown, with an illustration of them in use. Other pictures showed the use of special needles in the treatment of cataract."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books With Miscellaneous Notes on Early Medicine in Japan. Part IV. Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Dentistry, pp. 334-35. Honjo was one of the most prominent physicians in Japan and was well-known as an educator who was familiar with Chinese, Western, and Japanese medicine. He worked very closely with P.F. von Siebold. The present book was the standard work on ophthalmology in Japan throughout the 19th century. Fine set. .

The animal kingdom arranged in conformity with its organization . . . translated by H. M'Murtrie

New York: Carvill, 1831. Cuvier, Georges L. C. F. D., baron (1769-1832). The animal kingdom arranged in conformity with its organization. . . . Translated from the French, with notes and additions, by H. M'Murtrie, M.D. 4 vols., 8vo. xxxii, 448 [2]; xv [1], 475 [1]; xx, 575 [1]; xii, 545 [1]pp. 20 engraved plates. New York: G. & C. & H. Carvill, 1831. 220 x 133 mm. Speckled sheep ca. 1831, gilt-ruled spines (slightly rubbed). Moderate foxing and browning, but a fine copy. First American Edition. See Dibner, Heralds of Science, 195, Printing and the Mind of Man 276, Garrison-Morton 327. The most influential exposition of the typological approach to animal classification, representing the greatest body of zoological facts that had yet been assembled; it served as the standard zoological manual for most of Europe during the first half of the nineteenth century. Cuvier's view of animal organization led him to an early recognition of the balance of nature, both with respect to the functional balance of parts in the individual and the interdependence of groups in the "network of nature." However, Cuvier's adherence to the concept of species as rigid, unchanging types rendered him unable to account for the immense variation within species populations. Coleman, pp. 94-98. DSB.

        The Long Song

Headline Review, 2010. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/n/a. Signed by Author. SIGNED by author. Fine unread copy in illustrated boards without dustwrapper as published. "You do not know me yet. My son Thomas, who is publishing this book, tells me, it is customary at this place in a novel to give the reader a little taste of the story that is held within these pages. As your storyteller, I am to convey that this tale is set in Jamaica during the last turbulent years of slavery and the early years of freedom that followed. July is a slave girl who lives upon a sugar plantation named Amity and it is her life that is the subject of this tale. She was there when the Baptist War raged in 1831, and she was also present when slavery was declared no more. My son says I must convey how the story tells also of JulyÀs mama Kitty, of the negroes that worked the plantation land, of Caroline Mortimer the white woman who owned the plantation and many more persons besides - far too many for me to list here. But what befalls them all is carefully chronicled upon these pages for you to peruse. Perhaps, my son suggests, I might write that it is a thrilling journey through that time in the company of people who lived it. All this he wishes me to pen so the reader can decide if this is a book they might care to consider. Cha, I tell my son, what fuss-fuss. Come, let them just read it for themselves" Nominated for the BOOKER LONGLIST 2010.

Insurrection of the Blacks [Nat Turner's Revolt]

Baltimore: Niles Weekly Register, 1831. Some of the earliest reporting on Nat Turner's revolt in Southampton, Virginia, which began on 21 Aug 1831. These are the first two issues of the Niles' Weekly Register (27 Aug 1831 and 3 Sep 1831) to recount the events. The 27 Aug paper, which is especially scarce, devotes 13.5 column inches and includes the initial report of the violent attacks published in the Norfolk Herald. The 3 Sep paper, which is less scarce though still uncommonly found, contains 18 column inches, corrects some errors from the previous week's report and provides additional details. The newspapers were once bound. Both are clean and supple with some light toning. The leaves of the 27 Aug edition have some edge wear at the upper right margins. Together these two newspapers provide an extraordinary contemporary record of the slaughter in which about 40 slaves hacked, stabbed, and clubbed to death 60 white people.         Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus; together with The Ghost-Seer by Schiller and Edgar Huntly; or, The Sleep Walker by Charles Brockden Brown

Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley, 1831 - Engraved frontispieces and additional titles (with very slight foxing and a small faint stain to blank margin of those in volume I) Two volumes Small 8vo Just a little rubbing at corners, otherwise an extremely nice copy This constitutes volumes IX and X of Colburn & Bentley?s Standard Novels and is so lettered on the spines. It is at its most complete with all three works included and is more often seen comprising just Frankenstein or only Frankenstein and The Ghost-Seer. This edition of Frankenstein is the first to be illustrated and so contains the first depiction of the monster and of course Frankenstein himself. It is also the first to bear the author?s name and has an entirely new chapter and new introduction telling the story of how the novel (now famously) came to be written. Contemporary black roan, sides with triple fillet in blind, spines ruled in blind and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, complete with series titles to the first two works and half-title to the third [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Six Coloured Views on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, with a plate of the Coaches, Machines, &c. From Drawings Made on the Spot by Mr. T.T. Bury. London: Published by R. Ackermann, and Sold by R. Ackermann, Jun., 1831.First edition. Large quarto (13 3/8 x 11 1/8 inches; 339 x 282 mm.). [2], Seven hand-colored aquatint plates by H. Pyall after T.T. Bury. First blank leaf watermarked: “1827” Plate seven watermarked 1831. All of the plates are dated “Feby. 1831.” The plates are captioned: 1. “The Tunnel;” 2. “Entrance of the Railway at Edge-Hill, Liverpool;” 3. “Excavation of Olive Mount, 4 Miles from Liverpool;” 4. “Viaduct across the Sankey Valley;” 5. “View of the Railway across Chat Moss;” 6. “Entrance into Manchester across Water Street;” 7. “Coaches, &c. employed on the Railway. Original quarter calf backed printed drab wrappers with printed advertisements on the inside front and inside and outside back. An exceptional copy, slightly larger than Abbey’s. Housed in a custom-made half brown morocco clamshell case.“A later edition with the plates re-engraved [many of them with significant changes] was issued in 1833” (Tooley). “This book was first published with six plates in 1831. It proved popular, and other editions followed…This classic record of the beginnings of the railway age was also one of the last significant books illustrated with aquatints. Lithography was already sweeping the field for pictorial records of this kind” (Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England).Thomas Bury (1811-1877), “a pupil of Augustus Pugin, was the artist responsible for the best-known views of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Published as hand-coloured aquatints in paper covers by Ackermann in February 1831 [titled Six Coloured Views of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, with a plate of the coaches, machines, &c], Bury’s work went through many editions covering a period of about three years. There were seven views in the first edition and thirteen in the second. A reissue appeared in 1832 followed by Spanish and French editions, while the prints were reproduced separately in France and Germany. After re-engraving, new editions appeared in England in 1833 and 1834…Ackermann clearly realized the potential of the British and European markets for railway prints as no other work passed through so many editions” (Rees). Abbey, Life, 400 (1833 edition). Prideaux, p. 329. Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England, 45 (1833 edition). Gareth Rees, Early Railway Prints, p. 21 and Plates 5-9 and 13.
