Marquis de Lafayette
1830. In overthrowing a dictatorial monarch, he writes a British Parliamentarian, saying the alliance between England and France, “will bring with it the liberty, peace, and happiness of Europe.” This would be his swan song, his final major act as a revolutionary, written just days after the abdication of the King in the August 1830 Revolution On December 7, 1776, Silas Deane struck an agreement with two French officers in sympathy with the American cause, Baron Johann DeKalb and his young protégé, the Marquis de Lafayette, to offer their military knowledge and services to help achieve American independence. King Louis XVI feared angering Britain and prohibited Lafayette's departure, but Lafayette purchased his own ship and readied for the trip. The British ambassador to the French court demanded the seizure of Lafayette's ship, and Lafayette was threatened with arrest. He managed to set sail nonetheless and arrived in America on June 13, 1777. Lafayette then traveled to Philadelphia and tendered his services to Congress. Although his youth (he was just 19) made Congress reluctant to promote him over more experienced officers, the young Frenchman's willingness to volunteer his services without pay won their respect and Lafayette was commissioned as a major-general. He became Washington's aide-de-camp, and a close personal, virtually father to son, relationship developed between the two men. Lafayette was active at the Battle of Brandywine on September 11, 1777, and was wounded; after the battle, Washington cited him for "bravery and military ardor." He was with Was … [Click Below for Full Description]

HIROSHIGE, Ichiryusai. II et al.
[Edo c.1830-44 Suwaraya]. Stiff orange stitched wrs., covers worn, thumbed, 29 double folded leaves, [58]pages, profusely illustrated in 3 colors Sumi, black & pale pink, vol. 3 only of a 3 volume set, 16 x 23 cm. FIRST EDITION Delightfully interesting subjects, portrayed with a strong pen. Sketches of human figures, landscapes, flowers, birds, insects, animals of all varieties, done in light tints. The work is reminiscent of Hokusai's most celebrated book series THE MANGA. * THE ARTISTS: Executed in a collaborative effort by two famous artists: Hiroshige I [Ichiryusai 1797-1858] aka Ando and Keisai Eisen [Yoshinobu 1790-1848]. Working in concert they produced a lovely set of books with superbly charming and quaint illustrations. A fine example of the best of Japan's great master artists. * SUBJECT OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS: The work reflects all genres and subjects of life, work and leisure in Japan during the mid-1800's. Its a virtual dictionary of human and animal activity. This encyclopedic work gives us an insight to what most Japanese saw and were familiar with during their life-time. Illustrated in shades of Sumi gray, black and pastel orange. * PUBLISHERS, PLACES & DATES: Not all volumes state the publisher, per Kerlin, a 'second copy' was published in Nagoya by Eirakuya, and was a Meiji period reprint. One can conclude that Kerlin's observations were limited to those he found in the Netherlands, which was void of a matching set published in Edo by Suwaraya. Inside covers show adverts for Hokusai books, inside back cover shows adverts for various Edo, Osaka publishers an … [Click Below for Full Description]

During the invasion of Korea, he followed Yukinaga Konishi [?-1600] to Pusan and on to Seoul in 1592 where he fought so fiercely, that the Koreans named him "Devil Kiyomasa." Yukinaga was a Christian warrior & retainer of Hideie Ukita and was appointed Lord of Settsu by Hideyoshi Toyotomi. . Hideyoshi appointed these two to spearhead the Korean invasion, with Yukinaga the commander. The plan was to launch waves of army corps by ship across the 56 mile wide Tsushima straits to Pusan. Some 300,000 fighting men, a truly serious force embarked. The first force of 9200 Samurai armed with matchlocks, bows and swords set out. Upon landing, they rapidly advanced North up the peninsula taking out Korean castles and subduing the regions through power of force. They advanced to Seoul as the armies divided into two parts, each racing to see who would enter Seoul first. . At Cho-ryung pass they united, then both advanced on Seoul & took the castle, as the Korean King and his entourage fled over the river at Imjin where the Koreans up their vali … [Click Below for Full Description]

CAILLIE, Rene
Colburn, 1830. First English Edition Frontispiece portrait (Volume I) and 7 plates, including 2 folding maps (Volume II). Contemporary boards, rebacked in cloth, spine labels; preliminary and end leaves quite browned with a tear on second folding map, text otherwise clean. An uncut copy. First edition in English (published the same year as the original French). This was the very exciting first description of Timbuktu by a European to visit that city and return alive to tell his tale. Caillié was awarded 10,000 francs by the Société de Géographie in Paris for his official "discovery." Disguised as an Islamic convert, he was able to travel from Senegal through Soulimana, Jenné, and along the Dhioliba River to Timbuktu and then on to Morocco. His experience was unique among Western adventurers, and the narrative recounts his personal interactions with religious leaders and local clans, as well as reporting economic details for his European audience. Even in his youth the orphaned Caillié (1799-1838) lusted after adventure. With an imagination bred by Robinson Crusoe and books on African adventures, he set off on a ship bound for Senegal. Caillié survived scurvy and tropical fever, only to succumb to tuberculosis a few years after his triumphant return from Africa. Unlike other colonial explorers, Caillié believed one had to understand local culture in order to have successful expeditions. He spent a year with the Senegalese Braknas tribe studying Islam and Arabic in preparation for his journey to Timbuktu.
