A diploma from Marischal College, Aberdeen, handwritten in Latin and signed by James Beattie (Professor of Logic and Moral Philosophy), George Campbell (Professor of Divinity), Alexander Donaldson (Professor of Medicine), Patrick Copland (Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy, and a co-founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh), Robert Hamilton (Professor of Natural Philosophy) and John Stuart (Professor of Greek), awarded to the Reverend James Hall in November 1789.
- Vellum, 38cm x 28cm, folded several times to make a packet, dusty on the outside and along some of the folds, text and signatures clearly legible, with the red wax seal of Marischal College finely preserved in its container attached by the original ribbon, also a handwritten paper document from around 1830 concerning James Hall D.D. (1755-1826). This accompanying document records two memorial inscriptions to James Hall in Edinburgh, one on his headstone at the Calton New Burying Ground, the other on a marble tablet inside the United Associate Synod Chapel at 33 Broughton Place, where he had been minister. Nowadays this grand building ("unusually pretentious for a Secession church", G. Hay) is the headquarters of the auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull.

Wood-engraved frontispiece and 5 plates after Robert Cruikshank. viii, [9]-33, [3, ads] pp. 12mo. First edition of the expanded issue of this satirical poem written jointly by Coleridge and Southey and first published in The Morning Post for 6 September 1799 as "The Devil's Thoughts." The original poem's seventeen stanzas were expanded by Southey to fifty-six for this new edition. "The first three stanzas of this inspired piece of political cartooning were composed by Southey as he hummed in front of the shaving-mirror one morning at Stowey; the remaining fourteen were dashed off by Coleridge over breakfast" (Holmes, Coleridge: Early Visions, p. 240). A series of pirated editions appeared during the Reform Bill debates of 1830-2, the poem falsely credited to Coleridge's old professor of Greek, Richard Porson. Plate 2: Le Colibris Grenat - Le Huppe-Col - Le Rubis Topaze.' (Garnet Throated Hummingbird - Crested Green Hummingbird - Ruby Topaz Hummingbird.) The second plate is actually a unique proof print before lettering, additional engraving / etching and final coloring. Sold as a set. Original hand coloured engraving and stipple engraving on vellin type paper. Description: These delicate plates originate from an unknown work or series of plates. We have not been able to find any reference anywhere. As the collection this originates from also contains these proof prints, we assume this plate to be extremely scarse and probably a workshop item, never bound. The Pauquet brothers did engrave birds in the more encyclopedic but rare works: Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux d'Europe. (not dated c. 1830) and Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux Exotiques., by C.L. Lemaire and Florent Prevost, first publ. 1836. On our plates bird and other species are combined with plants and appear to be designed for decorative rather than ornithological purpose. Age estimate: 1830.Artists and Engravers: Engravers Hippolyte Louis Em. Pauquet (born 1797) and Polydore Pauquet (ca 1800 - 1860). The freres Pauquet, were reknowned 19th-century illustrators of a number of very popular and nowdays expensive works. Condition: Image good. General age related toning and light staining. , ca. 1830-1832. ca. 1830-1832.A large 4to album consisting of approximately 80 leaves, containing a variety of 19th century prints and ephemera, together with over 40 signatures, the owner of which is identified on the first leaf, in ornate calligraphy, "THE SCRAP BOOK. Elvira F. Smith... JEFFERSON BARRACKS: February 12, 1830." The album was kept by Elvira Loraine Foster Smith (1804-1878), the wife of infantry officer Henry Smith (1798-1847), who was stationed at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri from 1830-1832. The album is mostly disbound but still retains the original marbled boards, most of the pages bear marginal tears and losses together with some light soiling. Other signatures found in the album include: Daniel Webster ("Danl Webster U.S. Senate"), Rufus King, John C. Calhoun ("J.C. Calhoun"), Timothy Pickering ("Timothy Pickering Secy. of War"), William Eaton ("Your Mo. Obed. Servt, William Eaton"), William Dayton ("Wm Dayton"), Lewis Cass ("Lew Cass"), actor and playwright John Howard Payne ("John Howard Payne") and numerous others. How Mrs. Smith obtained these signatures is unknown, but it would appear that the signatures, which are mounted in this album, were cut from letters, and probably addressed to her husband. Elvira Smith's husband was an 1815 graduate of West Point who served in a variety of posts, including working as Quartermaster at Sackett's Harbor and Plattsburg, New York from 1819-1822 and in the same capacity at Green Bay, Wisconsin (1822), Fort Brady, Michigan (1822-1823), and Fort Smith, Arkansas, (1823).
