Milbert, who trained as an engineer, came to the United States in 1815, and stayed for 7 years. As drawing was a compulsory part of any engineers training, he was to show his talent in the quality of the 53 views he made of places he visited. They form one of the most accurate portrayals of the Northeast in the period. They are also an early example of the use of lithography for topographical prints. Garrison, NY; Jacques Milbert]
Ardit & Coindet, Paris & London, 1830. A striking color lithograph of Indian Brook in Garrison, NY with the rushing waterfall plunging into a quiet pool where two deer browse in the foreground. From Jacques Milbert's superlative collection of views entitled "Itineraire Pittoresque du Fleuve Hudson et des Parties Laterales de l'Amerique du Nord.". Milbert, who trained as an engineer, came to the United States in 1815 and stayed for 7 years. As drawing was a compulsory part of any engineers training, he was to show his talent in the quality of the 53 views he made of places he visited. They form one of the most accurate portrayals of the Northeast in the period. They are also an early example of the use of lithography for topographical prints. 'As an artist, Milbert loved to paint American landscapes, particularly those which showed the Hudson, "King of Rivers," flowing majestically through the mountains . The pictures of what he saw, as of the time he drew them, constitute a unique and valuable record.' (Sherman, 'A French Explorer in the Hudson Valley'). Titles in French, English, Latin and German; N°9. Pl. 1. Lithograph with handsome later hand color, a small amount of very faint foxing at margins, otherwise very good condition.

Walter Henry Medhurst
Batavia: printed by lithography, 1830. First edition of the first Japanese-English dictionary, printed on a lithographic press at Batavia, the present day city of Jakarta, Indonesia; 8vo, pp. viii, [2], 344; text largely in triple column, with the Japanese printed in both Roman and Japanese characters together with English equivalents; later half calf over marbled boards, black morocco label on gilt-decorated spine, marbled edges, with a note on the verso of the front free endpaper "3 dollars - Hong Kong. Bound 1860. Arthur Paget November 10 1857." A very good copy, in a quarter red morocco clamshell box. Walter Henry Medhurst (1796-1857) was an English missionary who served an apprenticeship in the printing trade before joining the Missionary Society. He was sent to Malacca in 1817 where he spent almost 20 years doing Protestant missionary work in what is now Indonesia. After the Opium War he moved to Shanghai in order to assist in a translation of the New Testament into Chinese, and remained in China until his return to England in 1856. Medhurst's long career in the Far East made him familiar not only with Malay and Chinese, but also with Japanese. Although he never visited Japan, he set about compiling the present work from whatever sources he could find at hand. As for the quality of printing, Medhurst writes in his introduction that "the printing needs a thousand excuses; but it must be remembered that the work has been executed at a Lithographic press, by a self-taught artist, and in a warm climate, where the Lithography often fails; also that the whole has been writt … [Click Below for Full Description]

[DARLING: SUDDS AND THOMPSON CASE] PARLIAMENT OF GREAT BRITAIN.
London: Ordered, by the House of Commons, to be Printed, 1 July 1830. Folio, 60 pp.; quarter calf, bookplate. A gritty insight into colonial politics of the 1820s, pitting individual liberty and the freedom of the press against the power of Governor Ralph Darling. As this publication records, William Charles Wentworth had attacked Darling for his contentious treatment of two soldiers of the New South Wales regiment, Sudds and Thompson. The argument was conducted largely in the pages of Wentworth's Australian newspaper, to which Darling responded with attempts to further curb the freedom of the press, imposing stamp duties on Sydney newspapers, and bringing libel charges against private citizens. These actions polarised the judiciary against the governor, and Darling came to believe that the judges acted against him in collusion with Wentworth. This report of 1830 ostensibly published all of the relevant documents; however, the Colonial Office was partial to Darling's case and edited the documents in a manner that misrepresented the affair, omitting a crucial letter from Wentworth to Sir George Murray. When this omission was revealed the Colonial Office was forced to publish the entire text of the Wentworth impeachment (as a parliamentary paper in 1832). Some years later in 1835 Darling was cleared of Wentworth's charges by a Select Committee of the House of Commons. Provenance: The Rodney Davidson copy, with bookplate. In fine condition in a good modern binding.

MELLET, [François Noel], & [Charles-Joseph] HENRY.
Engraved map on a scale of 1:50,000 of the second steam-operated railway in the whole of continental Europe, and the third in France. It linked the cities of Roanne and Andrézieux, both situated on the river Loire, near Saint-Etienne (France's coal-mining bastion), and was an extension of the first (horse-drawn) public railway in France, from Saint-Étienne to Andrézieux, a distance of 18 kilometres, which opened to passengers in 1831. Plans for the 67 kilometres of the Roanne-Andrézieux line were entrusted in 1828 to the civil engineers François Noel Mellet and Charles-Joseph Henry of the Compagnie du Chemin de Fer de Saint-Étienne à la Loire, both alumni of the famous École Polytechnique. The first section of the line was inaugurated in 1832. At Biesse the oldest railway building in France still in existence housed the fixed steam engine, built in 1832 for the inclined plane, which was the first such engine built in continental Europe.
