Fiume Latte prés Varenna (scritto a mano)

The two missing volumes are William John Swainson, Shells and Shell-fish and Anon., Cities and Principal Towns of the World. Volumes were originally made available at a price of six shillings each (or £39, 18s cloth lettered for all 133 volumes), which was later reduced to three and six as public enthusiasm for them tailed off. They were not, however, all issued in sets; the History of England, for instance, are Volumes VIII, VXIII, XXXVII, XLII, LXIX, LXXXI, XCV, CIV, CXIII and CXXIV in the series. It is estimated that 4,000 copies of each of the early volumes were published and that this was reduced to 2,500 copies for each of the later volumes. A very rare set in matching bindings of Lardner's great project. 12mo, half blue leather over blue marbled boards, gilt lettering to spines within five panels, volume number, when necessary, to base of spine, page edges brown speckled. Bound without advertisements, sometimes without half title and title pages but always with title frontispieces with vignettes after Corbould by Finden, these often off-set. Damage to the bindings is mainly confined to the top and base of the spine with rubbing (but no splits), corners mildly bumped, however, the marbled boards have suffered with rubbing and losses of paper to varying degrees, possibly the result of having become damp at some stage and having stuck together. There is no residual mustiness. The interiors have tanned end papers and frontispieces, occasional foxing but very minor and the very occasional folded corner but they are substantially unread.         Album van Buitenzorg. Een souvenir aan de residentie van Insulinde. Vier en twintig onveranderlijke lichtdrukken.Buitenzorg (Bogor, Indonesia), [ca. 1888]. Folio (43 x 33.5 cm). With photolithographed title-page and 24 numbered collotype reproductions of photographic views. Loose in the original publisher's portfolio: gold, black and blind-blocked red cloth over boards.

      - Cat. KITLV, p. 14; NCC (1 copy); WorldCat (4 copies); Haks & Maris, pp. 162-163; not in Bastin & Brommer; KVK. A rare album of 24 excellent photographic views (18 x 23.5 cm) of the palace and botanical garden of the governor-general of the Dutch East Indies, as well as architectural and topographic views in and around the city of Buitenzorg, Java (now Bogor, Indonesia). The first eleven plates cover the governor's palace and gardens, with lakes, roads, fountains, waterlilies and a great variety of trees, many with native Indonesians in the background adding to the atmosphere and giving an indication of the scale. The last thirteen plates show various buildings (including the train station), roads, mountains (including a smoking volcano), forests, rivers, villages and farms in and around the city of Buitenzorg, many with natives engaged in various activities. One shows shops and people in the Chinese quarter, and one shows a European with (apparently) his native workers. The attractive title-page, with its border and decorative initial letter, may have been executed by Lang himself. A letterpress key to the plates, in Dutch and French, identifies each view in a few words. The German-born Carl Lang (1830-1906) went to Indonesia in the 1860s, where he made his name as photographer and lithographic artist. He obtained government posts as lithographer of the Topographic Bureau in Jakarta and draughtsman of the Botanical Garden in Buitenzorg. He moved to the Netherlands shortly before his death. In very good condition, with only a couple very minor blemishes in the views. The portfolio also very good, with the spine slightly worn. A rare and fascinating set of photographic Indonesian views.

Mémoires de Lord Byron publiés par Thomas Moore

Original French edition, translated by Louise Belloc, published the same year as the original English. Dedication to Sir Walter Scott. Half cherry shagreen. Smooth back decorated with irons cold and hot wheels; title and volume number browned. Flat black glossy croisillonné. Cloudy few bites. Some friction on the back. Nice copy. In accordance with the wishes of Byron, Thomas Moore undertook memories of the author. By bringing together its various parts diaries which were entrusted to him, many letters and documents, Thomas Moore tried a realistic biography, far from the sultry legend that has long hovered on the existence of Lord Byron, for which the women fainted as his diabolical reputation preceded him.         [Osaka Bay and City w/ New Rice Fields]

Japan: Unknown. unbound. Color woodblock map. Sheet measures 17" x 20.75". This unusual Tenpo era (December 1830 - December 1844) Japanese map feature Osaka city and bay. By Matsuo Kado, the map focuses on the distribution of new rice fields throughout the region. A table along the right border includes a list of land owners and other important statistics.<br><br>Osaka city, also known as the 'nation's kitchen', was popular for rice farming from as early as 250 BC. Over time, it grew to become the capital city for the Osaka prefecture and a major economic center and served as a hub for the rice trade during the Edo period (1603 - 1868).<br><br>Between 1833 to 1837 Japan suffered from the Great Tenpo Famine mainly caused by poor weather conditions. Failing crops and rising prices, particularly for rice - a staple for the Japanese, led to starvation and disease. The conditions also sparked many rebellions and riots across the country. This particular map is perhaps a hopeful view at agricultural developments and distribution during those trying times.<br><br>Beautifully rendered, the map is an exceptional example from the Golden Age of Japanese cartography, and notes temples, individual houses, islands, bridges as well as sea walls. The map is in good condition with minor foxing.

A Vision Scarce 1830 Political Satire

London: Thomas McLean, 1830. Engraving and etching. Hand color. Image measures 9.25 x 13.25". This scarce satirical print by William Heath dates to February 9, 1830. The title of the print simply reads 'A Vision'. The print presents the past and present two phases in the career of Arthur Wellesly, the 1st Duke of Wellington. On the left half of the print is Wellington in his military uniform standing on a cloud above the tomb of Napoleon, who he defeated at Waterloo. The figure of Fame is seen floating near him blowing her trumpet and holding a wreath above his head. The right half of the print we see a much older and seemingly alarmed Wellington, dressed as a civilian, kneeling on a globe covered with continents labeled 'Free Trade', 'National Debt', 'Currency', 'Taxes'. Below the distorted globe, the masses are seen being crushed under the weight of a financial world. In the top center, dividing the two scenes is a throned king (Charles X) dressed in royal robes. Instead of a head is a fluer-de-lis, on which rest the crown and the words 'all for me'.The print seems to convey the contrast of Wellington's military success with his political position, and the implication that Naploeon's defeat only served to restore the Bourbons. The print is in good condition with minor foxing. Original plate mark is visible. Published by Thomas McLean, publisher to William Heath.

LES QUATRE ELÉMENS. LE FEU. LA TERRE. L'EAU. L'AIR. (cover titles)

(Paris) n.d. (ca. 1830). Four decorative miniature volumes, each with two hand-colored plates, printed by Maulde-Renou of Paris. Complete in their original decorative box. The two handsomely colored plates in each volume show man at the mercy of the particular element and man commanding the element for his benefit. A very appealing children's science miniature. OCLC shows 6 copies, the one at Oxford having Volume 2, only. There is also a copy at the Bibliothèque des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. Copies exist in different colored papers over boards. Gumuchian 4665. Four volumes , 7.8 x 5 cm; 24;24;24;24 + 8 hand-colored plates, in box measuring 9.8 x 6.9 cm.         Deck officer's navigational cyphering book

1830 - This manuscript lesson book contains 45 pages of navigational problems, one hand-drawn map ("A Chart from England to the Cape de Verde Islands"), and two illustrations (one of a sailing vessel and one of a Hadley Quadrant). The book was created by Silas Elden of Buxton, Maine in 1812, probably while training to be a deck officer or perhaps serving as a third mate on a commercial vessel. The pages are in nice shape and soundly bound together, however they have separated from their heavy paper cover. The cover is worn with considerable name-doodling by Silas. The pages are in nice shape and soundly bound together, however they have separated from their heavy paper cover. The cover is worn with considerable name-doodling by Silas. Silas has added what are, presumably, his brothers' names to the rear cover. The lessons cover general navigation, Middle Lattitude (sic) Sailing, Mercator Sailing, Navigation by Projection, by Construction, by Inspection, by Calculation, by Gunter, by Travis Sailing, the use of the Hadley Quadrant, and finally "A New Method of finding the Latt. at Sea.". Silas was born into a Saco River farming family whose home and lands were near Salmon Falls. Census records through 1850 show his occupation as "Sailor," however subsequent records indicate that he returned home to stay after inheriting the family farm following his father's death. The Elden family home still exists and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Apparently a fairly scarce genre of lesson book for as of 2017, no similar books are in the trade, none are listed at OCLC, and there are no auction records at ABPC or the Rare Book Hub.

Ulysses und Nausikaa. Nach einer skizzirten Federzeichnung von Prof. Julius Schnorr. 1827.

      - Federlithographie, um 1830, auf Velin. 26,4:41,5 cm. Olivier (1785-1841) und J.A.
