[Binding title:] Album costumes de théatre originaux.[France, ca. 1860]. Small folio (32.5 x 27.5 cm). Album with 178 watercolours and gouaches, and 3 prints (2 lithographs and 1 engraving) mounted on 195 leaves numbered in pencil. Including 73 signed by Jules Cornilliet, 66 signed by Abel Brun, 1 signed "Happel" and 1 "Stop" (pseudonym of Louis Morel-Retz), most of the others clearly matching those of Cornilliet and Brun. Near contemporary black half sheepskin.

For Cornilliet: Bénézit III, p. 177; Thieme & Becker VII, p. 443; both Cornilliet and Brun not in Colas; Hiler; Lipperheide. Substantial collection of original 19th-century designs for French theatre costumes. The designs can be roughly divided into the realistic and contemporary designs of Jules Cornilliet and the fantastic and humorous designs by Abel Brun; these include historical, oriental, satirical and allegorical costumes and costumes for specific types of theatre (ballet, drama, operetta). While Cornilliet often uses simple, but colourful and effective designs, Brun's designs are extravagant (like the pompously dressed-up noblemen "Le Prince Kolibrikiki"), absurd (like the doctor "Un Porte-Seringue", who is carrying an enormous syringe on his side) and monstrous (like the tailed blue and hairy beast "Le Scorpion"). The designs were most likely used for the fabrication of the costumes as they often include notes concerning the fabric and colours. We weren't able to match the costumes to any plays, but further research could be worthwhile. Most of the watercolours and gouaches are by either Jules Cornilliet (1830-1886) or Abel Brun. The latter is solely known from his art, including designs for colourful advertisements from the late 19th and early 20th century. The French painter Cornilliet was a pupil of Ary Scheffer (1795-1858) and Horace Vernet (1789-1863), who made his Salon debut in 1857. Both made more costume designs, surviving in a few similar, less substantial, albums located in the Bibliothèque nationale. A couple of the drawings with an unidentified owner's (?) stamp. Possibly lacking some plates as 14 numbered pages are left blank, but no traces of removal are found. Some occasional spots and smudges, otherwise in very good condition.

Album with Original Art and Hand Colored Lithography, musings and verse

England: , c 1830-1850s. England, c 1830-1850s. Covers show some wear, and the back strip and edges are slightly damaged due to rubbing. The binding is partiallyA few interior pages are loose and/or detached. There is some glue residue on the interior pages as well, due to the original owner pasting in prints, but nothing that affects any of the artwork.. An artist's scrap book filled with over fifty (50) pieces of original art work and hand colored lithography and other pieces. What makes this scrap book a unique find, is the consistent fine quality of the work within. Some of the hand-colored lithography is so expertly done that it becomes hard to tell whether or not it is a lithographic print. Pieces of note are: the portrait of a young girl with ringlets, and another portrait of a man in a turban. Some beautiful landscapes of farmland (rendered in pencil), an old stone bridge (watercolor), a boldly colored butterfly (color pencil) and bird (ink & color pencil), and 'A Pas de Deux' of crabs (ink).Additionally includes a pith watch paper with a thistle. A finely detailed tropical bird on a rose stem with nearby butterfly adorned with dried flora.Along with artwork there are several original pieces of music and poetry. There are two pieces of music, a ballad and a round, along with their music score. The poems are both original pieces, and quotes from other notable poets of the day. Once such quote, written in beautiful calligraphy, is from the poem entitled "Woman" by Eaton Stannard Barrett. "Would Woman govern tyrants? she concedesIn slight concerns, and hence in weight, leads.Opposes first, to make surrender prized,And while she gives advice, appears advised"Gilt and blind stamp leather. The pages are gilt-edged. The majority of the book has tipped in art work that has been secured to the page by glue and/or thread. Furthermore the majority of the lithographic prints within have been hand colored, but not all. Most of the artwork is unsigned, however when it is, the initials are general the same three names, E.B., E.T., and A.C. Wigan. There is reference to the Armstrong famil as well. A letter is included with the note "To my sister Daisy Armstrong, from my mother Mrs. Armstrong". The bulk of the material in the album dates from the 1930s.         A fabulous archive detailing the Second French Revolution, with significant battle content and mentioning all of the major players

Paris, France, 1830. Various. "An outstanding French archive offering eyewitness accounts of the major events of the second French Revolution. This archive contains thirty pieces, thirteen of which are letters dealing directly with the Revolution. Charles X precipitated events with the publication of three ordinances on July 26, 1830; these dissolved the chamber, virtually abolished freedom of the press, and modified electoral laws in such a way as to reduce the voting population to about 25,000 people, almost all landed proprietors. The people would have none of this. Printers' strikes and journalists' protests broke out, followed by armed demonstrations; barricades were erected all over Paris. The Marquis de Lafayette, who played so important a role in the American revolution, triumphed here as well. He called up, and took control of, the National Guard. After three days of fighting (known as les trois glorieuses July 27-29), the insurrection triumphed. Charles X was forced to abdicate in favor of his grandson the duc de Bordeaux (comte de Chambord). However, the duc d'Orleans was hailed as the citizen king, and took over the reigns of government. This archive, written in French, gives an amazing overview of these events as they occurred. A letter dated Paris July 26, 1830, the day before fighting broke out, states ""this morning's gazette... the charter... the Chambers... the freedom of the Press and change of the electoral law... will react after several days, but no one will have much faith in them. Yesterday the deputies... hours of convocation... the abyss of revolution... "" Paris, July 28, 1830, ""last night there was a bit of movement in Paris, almost all the shops closed, the light extinguished. The crowd... resist the police... they fired upon the troops... there are several regiments stationed in different places... this morning, some persons tried to reorganize the national guard, and those reassembled continued to regroup and disarm the police... I am told but cannot be certain whether a front regiment has refused to fire and sided with the crowd... One supposes that this agitation cannot last."" A letter dated July 29, 1830 informs that ""a very lively engagement has taken place in the streets and squares of Paris beginning yesterday at noon until 6 a.m., this morning... the troops were stopped everywhere by barricades that had been built. This morning at 10, almost all streets and boulevards were covered by barricades, a group of soldiers withdrew while the others no longer fought... two line regiments... declared that they were no longer willing to fight and went to place themselves... under the command of General Gerard. The Louvre and Tuileries [palace] are taken, the royal guard has withdrawn, and fighting has ceased. General Lafayette has taken, along with General Gerard, command of the National Guard. The Deputies have appointed Perier, Laffitte, Odier, Gerard [and] Loban to head the Paris municipal government."" A letter from Paris on July 30 gives more information. ""All is calm in Paris, the national guard is reorganizing... King Charles and the Dauphin [eldest son of the king of France] came... with two or three thousand men but no longer was able to do anything, as the guard refused to fight the people... one fought on the 28th and 29th, one has dislodged all the Swiss... national guard under the command of Lafayette... "" August 1st, 1830 has life returning to normal for Parisians ""people have undone the barricades... acceptance of the Duke of Orleans as the lieutenant of the kingdom has calmed everyone... the Chambers will assemble... to proclaim the Duke of Orleans king... this terrible and sudden revolution... astounding event... Charles X and his entire court left St. Cloud yesterday... almost the entire guard has abandoned their arms."" August 2, gives a hint of some remaining turmoil ""a powerful segment wanted a Republic, it has been quite difficult to set aside these notions... there is at present a segment which desires a Regency, but it appears to be impossible... order is being reestablished in Paris, no massacre, no plunder has tarnished the triumph."" Another letter of August 2 continues to provide post-Revolutionary information. ""I hope that his [Duke of Orleans] designation to royalty will experience no difficulty... this morning he appointed commissions of a provisional nature to head the ministries, fill the posts of prefect and police which had contributed a good deal to the revolution... court of Charles X has reached Normandy... I believe that within little time the tricolor flag will wave over all of France... Charles X has been abandoned by everyone and yielded."" A letter of August 3 continues the story of Charles X: "" [he] has refused to receive a body of deputies, he has a thousand men with him, no more... the address of the Duke of Orleans... announced that Charles X and the Dauphin had abdicated but he did not mention the Duke of Bordeaux."" An August 4, 1830 letter has more political content: ""it is my hope that it will not take them long to proclaim the Duke... king... not so easy for some associates... favor the Duke of Bordeaux... those who favor the Republic won't have the game in their hands, with their chief Lafayette in favor of the Duke of Orleans."" On August 7, 1830, the Duke of Orleans was offered the title of King. ""The Duke... shook the hand of Mr. Lafitte... then went... to seek General Lafayette whom he led to the window, and the ovation began all over again... one heard repeated shouts of Live the Duke of Orleans, long live the King, long live Lafayette... today our new king will be addressing the two chambers... the family of Orleans which it will be necessary to call henceforth the royal family."" A letter dated August 8 continues with news of the Duke of Orleans. ""[He] showed extreme emotion. He shook hands with the deputies... Mr. De La Fayette also appeared... it is said that the new king of the French will be called Philip VII... the poor royal family moves very slowly... no doubt it expects that somewhere someone will declare in their favor."" The final letter in the archive that touches upon the Revolution and its aftermath is dated Paris August 10, 1830. ""It is difficult to conceive that the general exaltation has not produced any imitation, not any excess... this unanimity of opinion give me hope that we shall be exempt from trouble from abroad... sorrow if the foreign countries failed to respect the force of opinion... I believe that France was never stronger... "" The remaining seventeen pieces in this archive touch upon a variety of topics. Two deal with a tax on bread, one with tobacco, one is a resignation letter of the Marquess Dalon, former Chief administrator of Lower Charente. Other tax documents are included, as well as applications for job licenses. In fact, this archive is so vast, and contains so much interesting and historical information, that it can not be fully appreciated unless it is seen, and read, in its entirety."

William Astor ALS, as Pres. American Fur Co, writes to Robert Stuart, his agent in Mackinac, about payment to G.S. Hubbard! Three movers and shakers of the fur trade

New York, May 5, 1830. 8" x 9". "Bi-fold ALS, 8"" x 9"", scripted entirely in William Astor's hand on the recto and verso of the first page, with the balance of the pages left blank. Docketed to verso of second page. Tipped into a backing sheet with second leaf inlaid to the page. Signed and dated by Astor ""New York May 5th, 1830"", and signed by William Astor as ""Wm B. Astor"". Expected folds, else unusually clean and well preserved. Accompanied by delicate near fine printed engraving of Astor, 2"" x 2"", along with documented provenance as noted below.William Backhouse Astor Sr. inherited most of his father John Jacob Astor's fortune. He worked as a partner in his father's successful export business who changed the name of his firm to John Jacob Astor & Son and engaged in the China trade. Although William's fortunes grew with his father's company, he became a truly wealthy man when he inherited the estate, worth around $500,000 (equivalent to $12.4 million in 2016), of his childless uncle Henry Astor I (1754-1833). When John Jacob Astor Sr. died in 1848, William became the richest man in America.Of interest is both the recipient of the letter, Robert Stuart, and the reference to G.S. Hubbard. In 1817, the American Fur company built their ""Agent House"" at Mackinac Island, (Michigan), Stuart became the resident agent of the American Fur Company. The Agency House was part of a four-building complex constructed to house the American Fur Company's offices. The other three buildings were a clerk's quarters (now demolished), a warehouse built in 1810 (now the Community Hall), and a trading post (subsequently altered, but later restored). Stuart was appointed to succeed the earlier agent in 1820, a position he then held for the next 14 years. Because of Stuart's national prominence and his lengthy association with the Agent's House, the building is still standing today and is nominally referred to as the Robert Stuart House. During Stuart's period, the American Fur Company thrived and the era of the 1820s and 1830s were boom years for the American Fur Company's operation on Mackinac Island. In 1822 more than three million dollars of furs were cleared through the Mackinac Island operation. Given his prominence, it was natural that Robert Stuart's house served as the social center of the island during this time. However, the fur trade began to decline in the 1830s, and in 1835 Stuart eventually moved on to DetroitAnd as the fur trade declined, Mackinac Island became a resort community. By the mid 19th century, the Agent House (now called the Robert Stuart House) was used as a boarding house in the years before and during the Civil War. And just to follow the building and the history of this island today, in 1871, the entire American Fur Company complex was purchased by James F. Cable and the three main buildings - the Agent's House, warehouse, and clerk's quarters[ - were linked with palisades and turned into the premiere island hotel of the time, the John Jacob Astor House. It remained the social center of the island until the construction of the Grand HotelThe other significant person mentioned in this letter is that of G.S. Hubbard (Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard ) an American fur trader, insurance underwriter and also one with an interest in land speculation. Hubbard led an odd path to John Jacob Astor when in 1818, through his family's misfortune, Hubbard was indentured to John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company for five years at $120 per year, and remained in the fur trade for a period thereafter. By the 1830s, Hubbard served in the Illinois General Assembly and became a leading figure in the fur trade and opened the first meat packing plant in Chicago as part of his work to supply Fort Dearborn with meat. In support of this business, he built the first warehouse, known as ""Hubbard's Folly,"" in Chicago. Building his own fortune in meats and furs allowed Hubbard to enter into the insurance business, and he was the first underwriter in Chicago. The path of the three men addressed in this letter were all of historical significance in US history. The direction of these important players in the fur trade sometimes intertwined and other times ran parallel to each other, but in this one letter the 3 men, Astor, Hubbard and Stuart were working together during the prominent era of the early 1830's. The letter in full is shown below:""Dear Sir, New York May 5, 1830Mr. G. S. Hubbard has presented one of your (illegible) bills in favor of Noel Vapeur for Four Hundred + ninety seven 087/100 Dollars with interest from 1st August 1827. Mr. Hubbard is in want of the money, but as it is a matter of your (illegible)a transaction of which I can have no knowledge I do not like to interfere, but to oblige Mr. Hubbard I have agreed to advance to him $250, say two hundred + fifty dollars, and there will remain the onsaid due bill including interest three hundred sixteen 11/100 Dollars from which is to be deducted any account which you may have against Vapeur and for the Balance you will settle with Mr. Hubbard.I send you a copy of the one bill which is now in the company ...I am truly YoursWm B. AstorPresdt Amn Fur CoFor American Fur CoRobert Stuart - Esq.Verso statement of:Mackinac august 1st, 1827$497.68 Due Noel Vapeur by the American Fur Company. Four Hundred + Ninety Seven 68/100 Dollars with interest at five percent from this date Robert Stuart Agent Am fur Co""Later, William Astor, in following the example of his father, also invested in real estate, principally situated below Central Park, between 4th and 7th Avenues, which rapidly increased in value. For about 13 years prior to 1873 he was largely engaged in building until much of his hitherto unoccupied land was covered by houses. He was said to own in 1867 as many as 720 houses, and he was also heavily interested in railroad, coal, and insurance companies. His management of the family real estate holdings succeeded in multiplying their value, and he left an estate worth close to $50 million. His house at Barrytown, New York, known as Rokeby, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.A letter induces the reader to an incredible amount of reflection of a phenomenal period history gone by, and the amazing lives of the 3 men mentioned within the letterProvenance: This item was recently discovered in an extra illustrated volume of "History of the City of New York" by Mary L. Booth, New York W. R. C. Clark, 1867. Originally two volumes, the monumental task of expanding the work to 21 volumes by none other than Emery E. Childs esquire of New York City. In volume 1 of this work exists a lovely india ink Drawing of Mary L. Booth along with a notation "presented by her to E E C" in pencil. Next to the title page we find an original letter of Booth to Childs dated April 4, 1872 " I am in receipt of your favor of the 4th inst., and am grateful to hear that you are taking the trouble to illustrate my History of the City of New York in the manner you describe. I shall be happy to see you, should you favor me with a callas I am usually in my office during business hours and should be pleased to facilitate your Enterprise by any means in my power"It is assumed that the book took several years to assemble at which point, assumedly through Childs, it made its way to Senator Charles B. Farwell of Chicago who took the seat of John A. Logan in 1887. Farwell had an extensive library that fortunately survived the great Chicago fire in 1871 having been housed in his Lakeside home. In the American Bibliopolist of November 1871 there is an article about the devastation to libraries caused by the tragedy . "Mr C. B. Farwell's library is also fortunately far out from the city, at his country house, and is safe, The same remark will also apply to the extensive collection of books and curiosities belonging to Mr. E. E. Childs." This establishes the Chicago connection between Childs and Farwell. That these letters were preserved for over 140 years and have never been on the market for that period is remarkable on many levels. It is the state of being wedged in these volumes that also account for what is mostly the pristine state of preservation."

Commonplace Book belonging to Jane - Poetry and Verse, Watercolors

1830s. Covers show moderate edge wear due to rubbing and age. Binding is partially damaged, partially towards the front of the album where several of the first pages are detached. Few loose pages.. A fcommonplace book full of poetry and verse, with several pieces of hand-colored lithographs and original art. With over 45 works of poetry, including sonnets, dirges, and ballads. One such poem, is from Metastasio, a Greek Poet: "Oh, could we read on every brow, the inward grief in silence bred, How many who we envy now would claim our pity while we read?" Some of the poems are about nature, like the Albatross at Cape of Good Hope, morality and love, or historical figures like Lady Jane Grey (otherwise known as the Nine-Day Queen). Along with the poems within the album are watercolors, sketches and several hand color lithographs. Some of these, like a boldly colored bird or a cloudy seaport, are meant to accentuate the poems, however there are also artworks that stand alone, like a beautifully rendered portrait in pencil of a man holding his hat. There are also a few lithographs that were not color in. With brown leather covers, with small embossed and gilded details. The interior pages are gilt-edged. Most of the artwork is tipped in. The bulk of the material within the album is undated, but were it is, dates from the 1830s. Measures 9 1/4" x 7 3/4". To view this album, please click on the following link:

Principles of Geology, Being an Attempt to Explain the Former Changes of the Earth's Surface, by Reference to Causes Now in Operation

London: John Murray, 1830-3 - First edition. Three volumes. 8vo. Recent period style speckled dark calf, spines with raised bands, gilt lettered green and red labels, all edges speckled red, the old armorial bookplates of George Fortescue Wilbraham to the front pastedowns. Frontispieces to each volume including two handcoloured aquatints, 3 maps, two of which are coloured, and 5 plates plus 133 illustrations in the text. Some foxing to the plates slightly affecting the adjacent leaves, otherwise a clean and attractive set. A classic of 19th century thought and of the young science of Geology. The work was an enormous influence on Darwin, who took volume I on the Beagle and received the second volume whilst in South America. He later wrote to a friend "I always feel as if my books came half out of Lyell's brain". ".Lyell probably accomplished more in the advancement of geological knowledge than any other one man. The world wide influence of his treatises and textbooks definitely established the principles of uniformitarianism" (Mather and Mason). PMM, 344. Donovan, pp. 87-89.
