        Zelinda; A Persian Tale

Whittaker, Treacher & Co., London 1830 - Bound in full contemporary wavy grain calf with bold gilt vine and blossom pattern on both covers and spine, beautiful crimson wavy silk endsheets. Inscribed by the author to his son, William Badnall. A fascinating and vanishingly scarce book of poetry by Richard Badnall, silk, ribbon and button tycoon of the early 1800's in Leek, Staffordshire and a man whose riches to rags story could make an entertaining if not sad novel. Through bad investments, he lost his fortune and nearly landed in debtor's prison. Somehow, during this time he seemed to be able to write poetry, and this volume was received with some praise, though acclaim never landed Badnall reputation, much less remuneration from his writings. He also wrote a treatise on Silk Trade (1828), a book on politics (183) and another on Railroad Improvement (1833), all exceedingly rare. Besides our copy of Zelinda, no copies of any of these books were found at the time of research. Laid in is a handwritten memo from the Society of Geneaogist of London, from Howard H. Cotterell, explaining some details of Badnall's lineage and also citing some of his works mentioned here. Bookplate of Russell markland. Some rubbing to calf. Book is near fine internally.         Autograph Letter Signed "J. S. Buckingham" to 'J. Upcott Esq' (English librarian and antiquary William Upcott) regarding his lectures at the Library of the London Institution].

1830 - 12 February 1830. On a folded Octavo leaf (ca. 21x12,5 cm). 2 pp. Brown ink on aged paper. Text complete and legible, addressed on verso of the second leaf. Traces of the old mount and minor holes on the last page, caused by removal of the letter from a stub, otherwise a very good letter. Autograph signed letter by James Silk Buckingham, a noted British traveller, journalist and politician (MP in 1832-37), author of "Travels in Palestine" (London, 1821) and "Travels among the Arab Tribes Inhabiting the Countries East of Syria and Palestine" (London, 1825). The letter obviously relates to the twelve lectures on "the Countries of the Eastern World" given by Buckingham in 1830 in the Library of the London Institution [for the advancement of Literature and the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge] (see: A Catalogue of the Library of the London Institution. London, 1835, vol. 1, p. Xi). Addressing William Upcott (1779-1845), a sub-librarian in the London Institution at the time, Buckingham is sending him the paragraphs, which he would 'be glad to have written out in some other hand than my own if it were possible'. He will be 'infinitely obliged to the kindness of Mrs. Phillipps if she can procure their insertion in any of the Papers'. In a long postscript covering the whole of the second page Buckingham invites Upcott and Mrs Phillipps 'to attend the Public Lectures on the Indian Question' which he is giving. He is sending half a dozen tickets 'as a very poor return for your great civility.'

1 volume. Gedruckt bei Firmin Didot, Paris 1830. Large 4to. Printed on fine paper. XII+(131-318+(1)) pages. XXXIV-LXII engraved illustrations, of which 11 are plates and three are coloured. All engraved illustratrions with protective tissue paper. Untrimmed in publishers printed boards (Bauzonnet, Paris). Binding with a bit of wear and staining, bumped corners and slightly worn extremities. Inside with a bit of foxing. Name on the inner cover (Dorph).. Inscribed by P.O. Brønsted: 'Til min kjær Ven og Frænde Holger Aagard / Paris den 1ste Juli 1830 / Brøndsted'.** First edition of the second part. Pioneering work on Greece with focus on archaeological aspects by the Danish archaeologist Peter Oluf Brøndsted (1780-1842), who travelled and worked in Greece (then still under Osmannic occupation) from 1810 to 1813. He participated in excarvations in Athens and elsewhere in the country. It took him more than a decade to get the first volumes of his account published, but he succeeded in getting it out in both a German and a French version - in a worthy, state-of-the art bibliophile publication. Lack of fundings caused the magnificent work - planned in eight volumes - to remain a torso. Only a second volume was published in 1830. Brøndsted is thus considered a pioneer in modern classical archaeology, where the field work is considered a precondition for theoretical studies

The Ford?s Theater Owner Discusses The Entertainment Business: ?I Will Certainly Press Her Engagement With Great Vigor And Endeavor Successfully To Make Her A Permanent Star Favorite In The Two Cities?

ALS. 2pg. 5 ¼? x 8?. Sunday. No Place. A rare autograph letter signed ?J.T. Ford? to Mr. Wright, discussing theater business: ?Your anticipated and promised letter did not arrive. Respecting Mrs. Bowers? engagement, I will give her the terms for time in January and Feb. which will be in the least profitable part of the Season. I will certainly press her engagement with great vigor and endeavor successfully to make her a permanent Star favorite in the two cities. With this much understood leave from her if she accepts my offer I will locate the precise day of the commencement in reply after I hear positively from her. Mr. Tayleune has written a most admirable new version of East Lyme and is now engaged on some other dramatizations which I think will be very popular. Mrs. B. have them to read at an early period. Write me immediately.â? It is likely this was written to John B. Wright, the stage manager at the Ford Theater when Lincoln was shot. Ford was discussing an appearance by Elizabeth Crocker Bowers (1830-1895), a popular American actress in the mid-Nineteenth Century. Other than a paper clip impression on the top margin, the letter is in fine condition and has a bold signature in black ink.

The Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports: Volume I

Philadelphia: J. & T. Doughty, 1830. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. First edition. Volume I. 4to. vii,[1],298,[2];pp., plus 24 hand-colored lithographic plates, and uncolored engraved portrait of Charles Willson Peale. Engraved title page. Contemporary calf boards, rebacked to style in matching leather, and with the original spine laid-in. Text is brown and spotted, the plates less so with very good coloring. Several pages have been expertly remargined at the fore edge (no loss) else this is a very good copy. Gift inscription on the front free endpaper dated 1832. Very rare and among the first American books to be illustrated with lithographic plates. The Cabinet of Natural History was started by brothers Thomas and John Doughty in Philadelphia. It was issued in monthly parts and ran from the end of 1830 until the spring of 1834 However, despite its relatively short life, it left behind an important legacy: Bennett calls it the "first major sport print color plate book produced in America," the text includes firsthand accounts of hunting expeditions of all kinds and are among the earliest of their kind. The plates include the "first colored sporting prints made in America" (Henderson), and most importantly the work includes a significant number of original lithographs by one of the great names in 19th-century American art. The first volume (made up of twelve parts ) was certainly the work of both Doughty brothers, with virtually all the plates being the work of Thomas. "Artistically, Vol. 1 is much the most important, for it contains the original plates by Thos. Doughty, famous painter and founding father of the Hudson River School" - Bennett. Indeed the plates in the later volumes are from a multitude of hands and sources. "The coloured plates are important - being the first coloured sporting prints made in America. There is only one earlier American book with coloured plates that I know of, and that is a treatise on Medical Botany - published in Philadelphia in 1817. Many of these coloured plates of animals and birds are charming, the colouring is soft, correct as to details, and all are well drawn" - Gee.

A New General Atlas, comprising a complete set of maps, representing the grand divisions of the globe... compiled from the best authorities, and corrected by the most recent discoveries

Philadelphia: Anthony Finley, 1830. Imperial quarto. (13 7/8 x 10 3/4 inches). Engraved title, engraved index leaf, letterpress General statistical table, 60 hand-coloured engraved maps (2 double-page), 2 hand- coloured engraved comparative charts of mountains and rivers. Expertly bound to style in half red straight-grained morocco over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, original green-toned engraved title label on upper cover, the flat spine gilt in six compartments, divided by horizontal gilt fillets and blind-tooled decorative roll, lettered in gilt in the second compartment, Finley's small format letterpress trade label (2 1/16 x 3 3/8 inches) mounted on front pastedown. An important atlas from one of the greatest American map publishers of the first half of the 19th century. A contemporary review of the 1824 first edition of this work is equally applicable to the present edition: "The number of elegant maps and atlases which have come from the press within a short time in the United States, is a most flattering proof of increased attention of the community to the important study of geography. The present work contains sixty maps, about half of which are devoted to the American continent [30 in the present edition], and the remainder to other parts of the world, chiefly to Europe. The engraving is done almost uniformly with remarkable distinctness and the face of the maps is frequently beautiful, not overloaded with a confusion of useless names" (North American Review, July 1824, pp.261-262) Little is known of Anthony Finley, other than his published work "but he was probably born around 1790. Judging from contributors to his atlases, he apparently moved in the same Philadelphia circles of engravers and compilers as other contemporary publishers" (Ristow, p.268). Phillips Atlases 755; cf. Ristow p.268; cf. Rumsey 285 (1831 edition, with 'Atlas Classica' bound in)

[Fox Hunting] Unkeneling Plate 1; Breaking Cover Plate 2; In Full Cry Plate 3; The Death Plate 4

[London: circa 1830]. Aquatints, coloured by hand. 6 x 7 3/4 inches approx. 8 x 10 inches approx. 13 1/2 x 15 1/8 inches. A fine complete series of four anonymous prints of hunting scenes, possibly after the Alkens. The style and naming of these prints suggests an Alken origin for the series. Siltzer records a number of series by the Alken family in which the first plate is titled "Unkennelling." This title appears to be unique to them and supports the supposition that the present series are after the Alkens. Henry Thomas Alken was born into what became an artistic dynasty. He studied under the miniature painter J. T. Barber and exhibited his first picture (a miniature portrait) at the Royal Academy when he was sixteen. From about 1816 onwards he "produced an unending stream of paintings, drawings and engravings of every type of field and other sporting activity. He is best remembered for his hunting prints, many of which he engraved himself until the late 1830s...To many, sporting art is "Alken," and to describe his work or ability is quite unnecessary." (Charles Lane, British Racing Prints, pp. 75-76) Cf. Siltzer pp.57-76

Les Bons Exemples ou Jolies gravures morales et amusantes avec un petit conte pour chaque sujet Ce petit recueil Dedie aux Enfans des deux Sexes . . .

Paris: Chez Lecerf et Chez Blanchard, 1830. Fourth Edition. Paper pastedown on boards. Very Good. A juvenile charmer scarce with hand-colored illustrations. N.d., circa 1830. Oblong, 12 by 18 cm, 7 by 4.75 inches. 22 pp. plus 10 hand-colored plates in addition to allegorical vignette on title. Each of the illustrations accompanies a short story, or anecdote or apercu, that highlights a virtue. In a sense, this is an emblem book intended for children. The virtues, all of which are both titles of the individual pieces and captions to the plates, are Courage, Sobriety, Charity, Diligence, Filial Devotion, Fraternal Love (featured twice), and Modesty. The hand-coloring is delicately and elegantly applied, making this work an outstanding specimen of the genre from the Restoration period (Biedermeier, or Regency period as well). With a neat owner's inscription from 1833. Original paper pastedown boards are heavily soiled and worn but nonetheless survive with their integral qualities intact. Light soiling to the leaves, never disconcerting. A few leaves were cut sloppily, with the resulting margins uneven and the lines of text at a diagonal.

Taschenkalender für 1831 mit Theater Costüme aus der Oper Stumme von Portici

Augsburg: Joh. Blossfeld, (1830). (24)ff. An almanac in the German and Austrian tradition of the "sack calendar," with seven fine, hand-colored engravings of costumes from the opera "Stumme von Portici," by Daniel Auber. Auber found his inspiration for the opera in the folk music and culture of the Italian countryside, and "Stumme von Portici" was considered the first French Grand Opera when it debuted in 1829. Published not long after, this calendar is bound in blue paper boards printed with a scene from the opera. Housed in the original blue paper slipcase, which features engravings of the masks of comedy and tragedy on one side, and a lyre on the other. Slipcase shows light soiling and wear, and the almanac is slightly discolored at the top; else a fine copy of an uncommon almanac. (Welsh 6592). (2 1/8 by 1 3/8; 54x35mm).

U.S. Land Grant Office, Jeffersonville, Indiana 1830 - Nicely preserved, early Presidential document. Signed by Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States. Dated January 4, 1830, the document grants land in the Northwest Territory, sold from the land grant office in Jeffersonville, Indiana, to one Charles Dawson. Accompanying the document is a certificate of authenticity, signed by the esteemed Dr. Richard Saffro, author of the 6th and 7th editions of the Sanders Autograph Price Guide. A very framable piece, especially nice because the signature of President Jackson is still bold. At head of document in hand of clerk is stated in large writing "Andrew Jackson" followed in large type "President Of The United States." Also pleasingly bold. Document that follows a mixture of handwriting and typeface. Some fading to the old ink in the body of the document, which has turned light brown with age. But happily, as noted, one of the most bold portions of the document is the actual signature of Andrew Jackson as President. See photo. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Voyage aux Iles de la Mer du Sud

Paris,: Pillet, 1830.. Two volumes, octavo, three lithographic plates (two folding) and chart of the island of Mannicolo; a little foxing yet excellent, unopened in original green printed wrappers, housed in folding cloth case. A very appealing copy of the first French edition of the voyage which solved the riddle of La PÈrouse, unopened in the original printed wrappers.Forty years after the disappearance of La PÈrouse, Peter Dillon, a sandalwood trader, called at the Solomon Islands. When a silver sword guard was shown to him, he suspected that he might have accidentally discovered the solution of a mystery that had tormented the French for decades. At Vanikoro he found many relics including a portion of the stern of the Boussole, ships' bells stamped 'Bazin m'a fait', monogrammed silver, metal fragments and mill stones known to have been aboard. One islander (shown here on a folding plate) had a glass piece from a thermometer in his nose. In recognition of his discovery Dillon was made a Chevalier of the LÈgion d'Honneur, his expenses defrayed and he was granted a pension. His book was commercially successful, appearing in English and French editions promptly and eventually in a number of translations.Aside from the startling discovery of the fate of La PÈrouse, Dillon's narrative is a classic account of the south Pacific in the 1820s. Hocken describes the author as 'a splendid specimen of a wild Irishman and seaman' and his narrative reflects the excitement and dangers of a sole trader in the south Pacific during this era. It is rich in descriptions of Australia and New Zealand, where Dillon was active as a trader and entrepreneur for many years. The fine and dramatic plates are reproduced from the first English edition of 1829, and were prepared by Godefroy Englemann who developed the process of chromolithography.Interestingly, the publisher Pillet also issued the official account of the Freycinet voyage, and that work is advertised here in the publisher's notice at the end of the second volume.Davidson, 'A Book Collector's Notes', p. 107; Ferguson, 1336; Hill, 481; Hocken, p. 44; Kroepelien, 297; McLaren, 'LapÈrouse in the Pacific', 73.

"La Diligence": in excellent condition with the exception of two expertly repaired tears along left side of sheet. Framed and matted in attractive black wood frames. Image size: 13 ½ x 21 ½ inches. Frame size: 25 x 32 inches. A stunning pair of aquatints by Jazet after the celebrated French landscape painter Etienne Bouhot. This beautiful pair of aquatints by Jazet, after paintings by Etienne Bouhot, are a wonderful example of Bouhot's unique style. A Burgundian artist, Bouhot made a reputation for himself as a talented architectural landscape painter. He exhibited regularly at the Salon and produced many fine paintings of the countryside surrounding Paris. The Industrial Revolution did not take hold in France until the 1830's when slowly factories began to appear across the countryside and the railways made their way into smaller towns across France. The modernization of the countryside had a great impact on French landscape painters but it was not until the work of the Impressionists, at the close of the century, that the symbols of Industrialization began to appear in images of rural France. For many years artists tended to ignore the factories and railways that littered the countryside, opting to paint an idealize vision of the country as a bucolic paradise. Although not as obvious as the Impressionists, Bouhot was one of the few artists to hint at the encroaching clouds of modern industry. His moody paintings capture a pivotal time in French history when the countryside was slowly transformed by modern industry. This remarkable pair of aquatints are a superb example of Bouhot's complex paintings. Instead of depicting an idealized vision of the countryside, Bouhot has chosen to show the effect of modernization on rural life. Jean Pierre Marie Jazet was one of the most prominent aquatint engravers of the Napoleonic era. He worked almost exclusively in aquatint, reproducing the paintings of the grand Republican artists such as David, Vernet, de Gros, and Grenier. Although the majority of his prints were patriotic images, he also produced many fine aquatints of pastoral paintings and genre scenes. His fresh images exhibit he beauty of the medium and exemplify his amazing technical ability. His extremely complex prints are fluid yet detailed; they express the beautiful painterly technique of the medium while exhibiting the precision of the reproductive arts. This pair is a veritable tour de force and a superb example of Jazet's talents as an engraver. Grand Larousse du XIXe's

Book of Mormon: An account written by the hand of Mormon, upon Plates taken from the Plates of Nephi

E.B. Grandin, Palmyra, NY 1830 - 588pp. Octavo [19 cm] Original plain brown calf boards with seven gilt stamped double bands on the backstrip. Black leather label on the backstrip with 'Book of Mormon' gilt stamped on it. The light blue robin egg speckling to the fore edge is faint but visible. The front hinge is starting at the foot, and the text block shows sporadic foxing. Two endsheets are present at the front and rear of this book. This is an unsophisticated copy that has had no work. A nice copy of this important work. Printed in an edition of five thousand copies by Egbert B. Grandin in upstate New York. Printing took place between August 1829 and March 1830, in the Grandin building that Egbert rented from his brother, Philip. Before the 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon was officially published, sections were being printed in a local Palmyra newspaper called The Reflector. The newspaper was run by Abner Cole who used the pseudonym "Obediah Dogberry." After some discussion, Joseph Smith finally convinced Cole to stop his piracy of the book. This "preprinting" of excerpts from the book caused non-Mormons some concern about the doctrines of the Mormon church, and thus, began the initial persecution of the Mormons themselves. The 1830 first edition book of Mormon includes many variant copies with printing errors in pagination and spelling. Part of the reason for these variants may be explained by the fact that Joseph Smith used several scribes when writing the book. The scribes included: his wife, Emma Hale Smith, his brother-in-law, Reuben Hale, Martin Harris and Oliver Cowdery. According to Peter Crawley " it is possible that very few copies of the book exist which are entirely identical." A highly sought after book by historical, religious and Mormon book collectors alike.
