" Eccezionale politica invio di Henry Leroy, dedicatario della lettera finale di Parigi pubblicato su The Thief e testimoniare le conseguenze della rivoluzione di luglio, le ambizioni elettorali Balzac che influenzano profondamente la sua scrittura. Al di là del gesto politico, il dono di queste scene di vita privata per soddisfare le sue ambizioni pubbliche in forma fin dall'inizio del suo impegno, la regola del progetto letterario sull'azione politica dell'autore di La commedia umana . Anche se egli considera la monarchia luglio come un tradimento, offre Balzac l'opportunità di realizzare un sogno di lunga data di azione politica. Già nel 1819 scrisse alla sorella: "Se io sono un tipo [...], io possa avere qualcosa di diverso che la fama letteraria, è bello essere un grande uomo e un grande cittadino. "Cambiare le condizioni di ammissibilità al demiurgo offre la possibilità di partecipare a scrivere la grande storia. Balzac "le orme del suo modello, Chateaubriand pensatore vuole combinare le funzioni di attore e politico" (vedi P. Baudouin in Balzac e politica). La maturazione di questo obiettivo è attraverso le lettere di Parigi, 19 articoli pubblicati su The Thief tra il settembre 1830 e il marzo 1831 e la conclusione sulla famosa politica Survey of entrambi i reparti. Mai firmato, questi elementi sono la più grande riflessione politica di Balzac e suscitato, in quanto tali, numerosi studi e recensioni. Ognuna delle lettere è simbolicamente inviato a un destinatario designato solo iniziale e città. Se fossero stati a lungo considerati immaginario, la maggior parte di loro sono ora identificati, in particolare tra i parenti dell'autore e politici influenti. Quindi, si tratta di un risultato della Lettera XVI del 26 Febbraio 1831 indirizzata a lui, il suo amico Samuel Henry Berthoud suggerisce Balzac appaiono nel suo comune. Le principali speranze politiche Balzac sono infatti in Cambrai, che cerca di sedurre le élite, mentre Berthoud, redattore della Gazette de Cambrai, ne assicura la promozione e la popolarità tra la gente, "Mr. Balzac n ' non è solo un famoso scrittore, egli è forse ancora più profonda pubblicista. Dobbiamo citare a sostegno di questa affermazione che le lettere su Parigi pubblicati in Il ladro e dove si vede un giudizio così sicuro, così lucida precisione [...]. Inoltre, offerte signor Balzac con una politica di pubblicazione popolare per contribuire potentemente a diffondersi tra le classi più povere, l'istruzione, e migliori idee ancora in buona salute. " In tal modo, il giornalista ha scritto al suo amico e campione ", affrettiamo [...] a venire a Cambrai. Andremo la grancassa e la Società di emulazione servono come uno strumento. " Così, naturalmente, con Henry Leroy, presidente della Società influente di emulazione, Balzac, è diventato un membro corrispondente, distribuisce il suo fascino. Indagando da Berthoud del "tipo di lavoro politico [che] potrebbe sostenere il [suo] candidatura a Cambrai," Balzac sceglie stranamente questa edizione di Scene di privacy, ma molto pochi "politica", che offre Henry Leroy attraverso il suo amico. Lo testimonia la lettera di ringraziamento che l'avvocato lo ha inviato 7 maggio 1831: "M. Berthoud me tornare da voi due volumi Scene di privacy. [...] Accolgo con favore [...] per avere il possesso al suo autore, tutti sono d'accordo a posto tra i migliori scrittori. " A partire dal 19 marzo Berthoud annunciato nel suo Gazette Balzac ha donato due opere alla Società di emulazione, le scene di vita privata e Fisiologia del matrimonio. La lettera Leroy sembra moderare questa informazione dal momento che grazie l'autore per le scene. Balzac "avente diritto" come amava essere presente durante la sua campagna, otterrà senza posti a sedere e meno di due mesi dopo aver annunciato pubblicamente le sue ambizioni, si è ritirato dalla corsa. Nonostante elogi da alcuni seguaci di mezzi fan del grande uomo il cui ladro, il futuro o la revisione enciclopedica predire l'autore un grande futuro politico, o della moda non è paura di chiedere il successore di Chateaubriand "degno di combinare i due titoli dello scrittore e statista" (30 aprile 1831), la carriera politica dell'effimero di Balzac conclusa con un fallimento triste. Criticando altrettanto legittimisti signori che egli sostiene ancora, e le persone repubblicani - quel famoso anche affermare conoscere le aspettative "della parte solida della nazione, colui che ara, lavoro" - Balzac rivela povero uomo politico. Tuttavia ha mai abbandonare le sue speranze e subirà ulteriori battute d'arresto nel 1832 e il 1848, perché, come ha osservato Stefan Zweig nella sua biografia, il romanziere ha sempre trovato "in politica pratica - come nel mondo degli affari - dalla parte sbagliata ". Tuttavia, al di là della constatazione di fallimento, questo primo episodio determina quanto rivela la complessità del rapporto di Balzac alla politica che si caratterizza per un assoggettamento della politica letteraria. In Balzac e Boris politica Lyon-Caen prende atto delle ovvie Lettere "polifonia" letteraria di Parigi, mentre Pierre Laforgue sospettato di sviluppo molto precoce (contemporaneo di questa prima avventura elettorale) delle scene politiche che appaiono che nel 1842, ma inquietante opera dal 1830. Complete set of the only edition of a richly illustrated school book on zoology. The first two parts are devoted to mammals, the third part to birds and insects, and the fourth part treats fishes, invertebrates, shells, amphibians, reptiles etc. It was published by the Dutch Society of Arts, founded by King Willem II to promote book illustration in the Netherlands. The famous English wood-engraver Henry Brown was invited to The Hague to start a Dutch school of wood-engravers, which turned out artists like Rochussen, Ten Kate, Sam. Verveer, etc. The Society however, soon collapsed for want of funds, and the Society's stock of hundreds of woodblocks went mainly to K. Fuhri, a publisher of popular books at The Hague.With bookseller's label P.C. Dill at the Hague. Binding slightly rubbed and discoloured; stamp on verso of the title-page. Very good copy.

"Like Le siège de Corinthe (1826), Moïse et Pharaon can be seen as an experiment in handling the resources of grand opera and, as such, an important stepping-stone towards the creation of Rossini's one wholly original work for the French stage, Guillaume Tell (1829). Hannah More was an English religious writer and philanthropist. She wrote as a poet, playwright as well asan author on moral and religious subjects. More began her career writing plays and swiftly became involved with the literary elite in London, eventually becoming a leading member of the Bluestocking group. Her plays and poetry moved to being more evangelical as she became part of an anti-slave trade movement. Condition: In a full diced calf binding with gilt stamping to the spine and to the board edges. Externally, generally smart with light rubbing to the joints and to the head and tail of spines. A rare and attractive lithograph showing the first Russian steamboat on its run between Saint Petersburg and Kronstadt. The first steamboat to be built in Russia was constructed in 1800 by Charles Baird (1766–1843), originally from Scotland. He initially arrived to Saint Petersburg in 1786 accompanying Charles Gascoigne, whom Catherine II entrusted with the establishment of the Aleksandrovsk gun factory at Petrozavodsk. By 1792 Baird founded his own successful business, the Baird Works, specialising in steam-driven machinery. The Baird Works were responsible for the Elizaveta, Russia's first steamship, launched in 1815, and this early start gave them a ten-year monopoly on steamship routes from St. Petersburg, including the Elizaveta's run to Kronstadt.

The plates accompanying the text are superbly rendered, and include several Australian Aboriginal scenes: possum hunt; kangaroo hunt; bird hunt, and fishing in a canoe, as well as a group of warriors in ochres and a family in their encampment at night. The ethnological subjects are interspersed with delicate illustrations of botanical and insect specimens, dramatic whaling scenes and pictures of wild animals in combat. Copies are recorded in two Australian collections (State Library of New South Wales; National Library of Australia).

A superb scroll painting on silk, 39.5 cm. wide by 233 cm. long, painting size: 29.5 x 185cm., fine mounting, pale silk chrysanthemum patterned border, flawless flawless, excellent pastel colors, excellent condition.RARE! THIS IS A GREAT AND STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL HAND-PAINTED SCROLL * THE SUBJECT: Kato Kiyomasa [1562-1611] was the son of Kiyotada, a relative of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, and served him and distinguished himself as one of the seven most famous warriors of that time by his heroic acts at the Battle of Shizugadatake. . During the invasion of Korea, he followed Yukinaga Konishi [?-1600] to Pusan and on to Seoul in 1592 where he fought so fiercely, that the Koreans named him "Devil Kiyomasa." Yukinaga was a Christian warrior & retainer of Hideie Ukita and was appointed Lord of Settsu by Hideyoshi Toyotomi. . Hideyoshi appointed these two to spearhead the Korean invasion, with Yukinaga the commander. The plan was to launch waves of army corps by ship across the 56 mile wide Tsushima straits to Pusan. Some 300,000 fighting men, a truly serious force embarked. The first force of 9200 Samurai armed with matchlocks, bows and swords set out. Upon landing, they rapidly advanced North up the peninsula taking out Korean castles and subduing the regions through power of force. They advanced to Seoul as the armies divided into two parts, each racing to see who would enter Seoul first. . At Cho-ryung pass they united, then both advanced on Seoul & took the castle, as the Korean King and his entourage fled over the river at Imjin where the Koreans up their valiant effort to check the Japanese. This is a most magnificent painting of both Kiyomasa and Yukinaga as each holds a Naginada, while the Korean King prepares to rides a black steed effecting his escape while being protected by a retainer who also holds an elaborate Naganada with the Imperial banner. * THE ARTIST AND PAINTING SCHOOL: . This work was done in the Utagawa school style and was likely painted by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, or one of his star pupils. It was painted in the "Ukiyo-e" style, similar to that of a color woodblock print. . It is painted in a firm, solid, confident strong hand, this work is executed with most impressive brush strokes, style & manner, expressing the Bushido spirit celebrating triumph over the Koreans. Marvelous detail to the whole work renders this a major piece. Skillfully drawn & painted on silk which is the most difficult medium to control ink flow, this work is flawless and a fine example worthy of display in any Tokunoma. . Zu den wichtigsten und schönsten Münchner Veduten zählen, neben der Gesamtansicht, der Marienplatz, Odeonsplatz, Neuhauser- und Kaufingerstrasse, Hoftheater, Residenz, die Stadttore und Kirchen, ferner Karolinen- und Maximiliansplatz. Aus der Münchner Umgebung und dem Oberland sind dargestellt: Nymphenburg, Blutenburg, Fürstenried, Schleissheim, Bogenhausen, Harlaching, Menterschweige, (Unter-)Föhring, Thalkirchen, Großhesselohe, Schäftlarn, Leutstetten (3), Starnberg (4), Schloß Berg, Possenhofen, Bernried, Seeshaupt, Tegernsee (2), Kaltenbrunn, (Rottach-)Egern, Kreuth (2), Miesbach und Schliersee. Contemporary brown calf, flat spine ruled in blind, titles and double ruled frame in blind to front cover, marbled endpapers, red edges. Minor wear to very tips, slight scratching to covers, occasional faint foxing; a very good, clean copy, with bright plates. Text in French and Latin. Portrait frontispiece and hand-coloured frontispiece, 11 plates, of which 5 are hand-coloured and bound out of order, and various diagrams and sigils in the text. A superb early 19th-century French copy of two grimoires, printed by Simon Blocquel (1780–1863). Blocquel, a bookseller, freemason, and printer, published a number of grimoires from his publishing press in Lille, giving them fictitious imprints; a common practice with occult books dating back to the publication of French editions of Agrippa during the 16th and 17th centuries which "served the dual purpose of frustrating the censors and giving the grimoires an aura of venerable authority and foreign mystery" (Davies, p. 98). This clear, neat, and evocative example contains the works of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa (1486–1535), which credit the German philosopher Pierre D'Aban (c. 1257–1316) as the translator, and include his Heptameron, a concise book of magical rites concerned with conjuring specific angels for the seven days of the week. The first translation of Agrippa's work attributed to D'Aban appears to have been published in 1788; Agrippa's De occulta philosophia, the text from which this work is predominantly drawn, was first published in Latin in 1533. This work includes an explanation of how to train hairy flies to find buried treasure and instructions for the exorcism of aerial spirits, accompanied by wood-cut plates of the necessary pentacles. At the end of this work is a two page list of recommended reading, including the most notorious grimoires of the time, the Petit Albert and Le Veritable Dragon Rouge. Together with the works of Agrippa is The Enchiridion of Pope Leo III, a collection of prayers supposedly given to Charlemagne by Pope Leo III upon his coronation as Emperor of the Romans in 800; the earliest known edition is dated to 1633. This practical work is rife with religious language and justifications, including quotes from various psalms and references the teachings of saints such as St Jerome and St Augustine. Within the text, which must be read upon one's knees, with the face turned toward the east, are a series of talismanic prayers, such as those to ward off foxes and counter impotency. Such was the power of these prayers that many believed simply owning a copy of the Enchiridion was enough to offer protection from illness (p. 107). A. E. Waite, the noted mystic and historian of the occult described the Enchiridion "as an infamous storehouse of Black Magic". France was "the European centre of grimoire production" and throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries there was a mass publication of books with practical occult knowledge, most commonly in a cheap format known as the Bibliothèque Bleue, comparable to the English chapbook (p. 97). Many believe this outpouring was a reflection of the "wave of superstition unleashed by the Revolution . people faltered from the true path of Christian piety and moral sensibilities, leading to an era when blasphemous magic flourished" (p. 104).         Kiev-Pechersk Patericon: A Compilation of Stories about the Founding of the Kievo-Pechersk Monastery and the Lives of its First Inhabitants].

      1830 7335 - Folio (38.5 x 23.5 cm), fifteenth issue. Title, [1], 2, 6, 9, [1], 213, 15 ll., with an engraved plate, and multiple woodcuts in text; manuscript number on title. Contemporary full red sheep, covers with gilt borders, flat spine gilt in compartments, black morocco label with gilt lettering, all edges gilt and decoratively embossed; slightly rubbed. A lovely example of this richly illustrated chronicle, complete and unusually bound in full contemporary red sheep with gauffered edges. The Patericon is a famous collection of edifying tales, anecdotes, and apophthegms about saints, Church Fathers, and prominent monks of the Kiev Pechersk Cave Monastery. Originally compiled in the 13th century, it is largely based on two letters written by the monks of the Kiev Pechersk monastery, Simon and Polikarp, retelling the lives of the ascetics of the cave monastery who, by their sublime acts, glorified the Kiev shrine. Later manuscripts of Patericon incorporated also stories about the establishment and development of the monastery, its interior embellishment and its first inhabitants. The original printed edition was edited by the metropolitan of Kiev Silvestr Kossov (d. 1657) and published in Polish in 1635. The first translation into Church Slavonic appeared 26 years later under the initiative of the archimandrite Innokentiy and in the 18th century fine and decorative woodcuts were added to its well written text and engaging stories about the lives of Saints and monks. This made the work increasingly popular, and in 1759 the Moscow Synodal typography published a new edition, reviewed and amended according to the teachings of the Orthodox Church. The present edition is nicely illustrated with earlier woodcuts, showing great feats of the fathers, the Lavra itself and some caves. It is uncommon as we could not trace any copy of this edition in RGB or RNB, and Worldcat located no copies in Western libraries. Cf. for earlier editions Sopikov 814. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Charles was the elder brother of Alfred Tennyson and an ordained priest in the Church of England. He was married to Louisa Sellwood - the younger sister of Alfred's future wife Emily Sarah Sellwood. He changed his name to Turner after inheriting the estate of his great-uncle, the Reverend Samuel Turner of Caistor in Lincolnshire.

Rare - First Edition!Karl Heinrich Baumgärtner's (1798-1886) "Bildungskugeltheorie" was a precursor of the cell theory of Theodor Schwann."But the observations and writings of Milne Edwards may be looked upon as having given, more than those of any other author, position and popularity to the " globular theory." He examined all the principal tissues, and announced that the fibres of the then so-called cellular (fibrous) tissues, membranes composed of these fibres, muscle and nerve, were composed of globules of about the same size, from 1/8000 to 1/7500 inch, in diameter whence he concluded that these spherical corpuscles, by their aggregation, constituted all organic textures, vegetable or animal, and whatsoever their properties or functions. There is little doubt but that many of these so-called globules described by Edwards were' really cells, seen with indifferent instruments, and further distorted by the glare of direct sunlight.Similar, as regards the element of organization, were the views of Baumgartner and Arnold, who were joint observers. They considered the fundamental elements of organization to be the formative globule (Bildungskugel), and the molecular granule (Molecularkügelchen). The first is primarily formed by a simple aggregation of smaller granules first represented by the granules of the yolk united by a formless material. The " molecular granule " arises from a breaking up of the " formative globule." A modification of the " formative globule " out of an aggregation of which" the entire embryo is first formed, is the haematoid body (Hämatoidkörper). This is a nucleated discoid body with a distinct ring-like border (geringter Körperkern mit einem Ringe).Further, " Out of these two kinds of globules and out of formless material," says Baumgärtner, " all tissues are formed, namely, the tissue-fibres (threads) out of the molecular granules, and the haematoid bodies out of the formative globules and newlyformed tissue-fibres. The molecular form is not everywhere equally expressed, which is owing in the first place to the fact that often the molecular granules more or less fuse together, and second, that formless material surrounds the molecular granules and makes their ontline indistinct. The theory here brought forward of the fundamental form of organization in animals may well he called the globular theory."It is evident that the " formative globule," or at least the modification of it called the Haematoidkörper, is nothing more nor less than the nucleated cell, which, however, Baumgärtner did not admit, contending as late as 1842 against the cell doctrine asserting also that in the development of tissues the formative globule never divides to form two, in other words, that there is no such thing as cell division.*Arnold also says that all fluid and solid parts of the human body are resolvable first into a fluid or half fluid material of no determinate form, and second, into granules which are more or less completely spherical-, and in all solid structures appear for the most part as minute globules. The granules, which are the second more important element, occur not only in all fluids and solid parts of the completely formed human organism, but they are also the original and essential constituents of the human embryo.
