A German autograph album containing over 80 elements (laid-down or tipped-in), including many original watercolors, gouache paintings, pen and ink drawings, pencil drawings, autographs and inscriptions, a few prints and photographs, etc., spanning the years from the 1830s to the early 20th Century. Among the many notable pictures are: two oval ink drawings (double-portraits of two young women and two girls), and one pencil drawing of Frederic the Great, all identified by the album's owner as works by the painter and printmaker Daniel Chodowiecki; a watercolor and charcoal portrait of an actor by Karl Alexander Wilke; two watercolor drawings of troopers in costume by Johann Nepomuk Hochle, and two fine gouache and watercolor portraits of the actor Christian Rub by an unknown artist. Also included is an ink drawing of the escape to Egypt by Karl von Binzer, and a charcoal drawing of a woman reading by Alexander Goltz, drawn directly on an album leaf. Many other portraits and landscape drawings, theater scenes and designs, flowers, etc., and including several inscriptions and autographs. A very charming album of high artistic value. A detailed list of the 80+ illustrations is available on request. .

Leopoldo Cicognara handwritten letter in Italian to his friend Alessandro Zanetti

[Italy]: Leopoldo Cicognara, 1830. 1st Edition. No binding. Good. 26cm x 20.5cm (10-1/4 x 8 inches), Handwritten letter in Italian, 2 sided, was folded to 8.7cm x 10.5cm (3 x 4-1/8 inches) now flat. Letters from Leopoldo Cicognara do not often come to market and this 1830 letter to his friend Zanetti will present more insight into Cicognara. Some spotting and two right edge pieces of paper are missing affecting a couple of letter in the text, otherwise in good condition. Leopoldo Cicognara was born to a noble family in Ferrara, Italy. He was an Italian poet and an amateur artist, a patron of the arts, and one of the founding fathers of the discipline of Art History. He held various political and diplomatic posts and was also president of the Fine Arts Academy of Venice from 1808 to 1827. He possessed a magnificent library of over 5,000 works on painting, sculpture and architecture, as well as the relationship of these arts with literature, music, philosophy and other branches of knowledge. The Cicognara Library also contains biographies of artists and poets, treatises and manuals on various arts, studies of emblems, funeral rites, numismatics, Roman and Greek antiquities, and architectural dictionaries. It was acquired by the Vatican Library in 1824, under the pontificate of Leo XII, creating the Cicognara Collection. Cicognara had published a catalogue of his library in 1821 (ragionato Catalogo dei libri d'arte e d'Antichità posseduti Cicognara Conte dal), which has become an irreplaceable guide to art history sources from antiquity to the early nineteenth century. quoted from University of Navarra web site.Alessandro Zanetti: After Cicognara s death in 1834, his relative Alessandro Zanetti, with whom he had been closely associated, prepared a catalogue of his nielli and engravings, with a view to their sale, which was published at Venice in 1837, by the title of " Le Premier Siecle de la Calcographie." quoted from The Early Italian Prints in the British Museum, 1886.

A' Marosvasarhelyt 1829-be nyomtatott Arithemetika Elejének részint röviditett, reszint bovitett, általán jobbitott, 's tisztáltabb kiadásaMarosvasarhely: Kali Simon, 1843. First edition.

An exceptionally fine copy, in the original boards, of Bolyai's work on the foundations of mathematics, and the last of the great works of Farkas Bolyai. It is in part based on the author's Az arithmethica eleje published in 1830 and on the second volume (the first volume being on geometry) of his magnum opus the Tentamen juventutem studiosam elementa matheseos purae, 1832-33, to which it frequently refers. This work enlarges and extends Bolyai's investigations into the principles of mathematics. Farkas Bolyai (1775-1856) was a close friend of Gauss and regarded by the latter as the only man who fully understood Gauss' metaphysics of mathematics. "He can be taken as a precursor of Gottlob Frege, Pasch, and Georg Cantor; but, as with many pioneers, he did not enjoy the credit that accrued to those that followed him" (DSB). He had worked on the parallel postulate and the possibilities of a non-Euclidean geometry from his earliest days as a mathematician in Göttingen, and had corresponded with Gauss on the subject, even sending him a manuscript entitled Theoria parallelarum, but it was his son János who was to achieve the breakthrough.
The text refers frequently to Gauss and Lagrange, along with other mathematicians such as Maclaurin and Taylor.
Bolyai began this work in 1829 but only a short introduction and an excerpt were printed (in 1830) because he was under pressure with preparing for publication the Tentamen. At the time when this work was published, Bolyai was in despair as neither his son Janos nor he himself had received any recognition. He desperately wrote to Gauss (January 18th, 1848): 'Some years ago I have published another attempt [the present work] in Hungarian but without any results - Mathematics does not grow in this "China".' Only one more letter to Gauss followed (February 6th 1853) before Bolyai's death in 1856.. 8vo (207x123 mm), pp. xliv, 386, with two folding lithographed plates on blue paper, one with six folding slips with grey and pink wash colouring; some very occasional and light foxing, a very fine copy, entirely unrestored in original blue boards with paper label to spine. Very rare

        LETTRE AUTOGRAPHE SIGNEE

Book of Mormon: An account written by the hand of Mormon, upon Plates taken from the Plates of Nephi

Palmyra, NY: E.B. Grandin, 1830. First Edition. 588pp. Octavo [19 cm]. Rebound in an attractive full brown striated calf with raised bands and the title gilt stamped on the backstrip. New pastedowns and endsheets. Textblock is complete including a front and rear free blank. A nicely rebound copy of this important work. Printed in an edition of five thousand copies by Egbert B. Grandin in upstate New York. Printing took place between August 1829 and March 1830, in the Grandin building that Egbert rented from his brother, Philip. Before the 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon was officially published, sections were being printed in a local Palmyra newspaper called The Reflector. The newspaper was run by Abner Cole who used the pseudonym "Obediah Dogberry." After some discussion, Joseph Smith finally convinced Cole to stop his piracy of the book. This "preprinting" of excerpts from the book caused non-Mormons some concern about the doctrines of the Mormon church, and thus, began the initial persecution of the Mormons themselves. The 1830 first edition book of Mormon includes many variant copies with printing errors in pagination and spelling. Part of the reason for these variants may be explained by the fact that Joseph Smith used several scribes when writing the book. The scribes included: his wife, Emma Hale Smith, his brother-in-law, Reuben Hale, Martin Harris and Oliver Cowdery. According to Peter Crawley "…it is possible that very few copies of the book exist which are entirely identical." A highly sought after book by historical, religious and Mormon book collectors alike. Crawley 1. Flake/Draper 595. Bibliothica Scallawagiana 230. Howes S 631. Mormon 50: 1. Auerbach 1168. Sabin 83088.
