Military Reminiscences extracted from a Journal of Nearly Forty Years' Active Service in the East Indies

London: Smith, Elder, and Co., 1830. 2 volumes octavo (213 × 132 mm). Modern red half calf, matching linen boards, title gilt to spines, foliate roll gilt to the spine and corner edges. Uncoloured aquatint frontispiece to each, and 20 other aquatint plates, 2 of them folding, 21 full-page wood-engraved illustrations, 14 maps and plans, 2 fo them folding one of these an aquatint, wood-engraved title-page vignettes and numerous similar illustrations to the text. Perhaps a little rubbed, some foxing and browning, and occasional offsetting to and from the plates, but overall a very good set. First edition. "Military Service in India and Ceylon, 1790-1829" (Bruce). Welsh (1775-1861) was born in Scotland, and in 1790 was commissioned as ensign in the army of the HEIC, the following year being posted to the 3rd European Regiment in Madras. He participated in the capture of Pondicherry, 1793, and in 1795 of Ceylon; served in the 2nd Mahratta War, 1803-5, being present at Ahmadnagar, Argaum, Gwilghar, and Makarsir; 1805-7 commanded a battalion at Poona, putting down a mutiny of native troops at Palamkotta; 1809 lead the assault at the taking of Arambooly, Travancore; and in 1812 put down a native rising in the Wainad. He spent 1829-37 in England before returning to India as GOC Northern Division, Madras, until 1847. Welsh's memoirs "methodically trace nearly every step of the imposition of British control over South India. For the major encounters with the French, Dutch, and during the Mahratta War, he often lists the 'order of battle' and summarizes the casualties. Of some interest are Welsh's recollections of service with Lord Cornwallis and Major General Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington" (Riddick).

Manual of Plain Directions for Planting and Cultivating Vineyards, and for Making Wine, in New South Wales

Sydney: R. Mansfield for the Executors of R. Howe, 1830. Small octavo, 96 [iv] pp., upper margin of title-page expertly repaired, moderate preliminary browning, contemporary manuscript note laid down on rear endpaper; very good in early papered boards, manuscript to front "Busby on Vine 1830", backstrip faithfully renewed. Presentation copy: Busby's rare second book. First edition, presentation copy: one of the rarer books by Busby, considered the founder of the Australian wine industry. The front endpaper is inscribed "Revd. Mr. Cartwright with the author's best regards, 26 June 1830" and this copy has, tipped in, a curious and quite significant early manuscript note on the wine-making method of Thomas Hobbes Scott at the Male Orphan School, established by Macquarie in 1819 at Liverpool, and the same place where Busby himself first taught viticulture (see below).James Busby (1801-1871) was probably the most important single figure in the early history of the Australian wine industry, and his property Kirkton on the Hunter River, which was taken over by Lindemans in 1914, is the oldest continually producing vineyard.Busby's three books on viticulture had an enormous effect on the early wine industry. He had published Treatise on the Culture of the Vine in 1825; it was largely a compilation from European writers, addressed to "the attention of the higher classes", but it prompted Governor Brisbane to encourage him in practical experimentation, the results of which appear in the present book. Here Busby attempted to convince "the more numerous portion of the community constituting the class of smaller settlers... that they, and each member of their families may with little trouble and scarcely any expense, enjoy their daily bottle of wine, the produce of their own farms...".This follow-up book has proved to be the rarer of the books on the market, perhaps because its practical nature made it more studied and used. It is also interesting to see that in his brief preface Busby takes some pains to compare the drinking of wine by the poorer peoples of southern Europe "with the unhappy effects produced by the consumption of spirits, or of malt liquors, among the same ranks": it seems plausible that this opening salvo was meant as a direct riposte to Atkinson's work on distilling of the previous year. Certainly Busby is keen to promote the ease and simplicity of life with a vineyard, and this book has the added attraction of many small asides relating to his successes, such as his evident pride that he recently opened one of his bottles at a dinner at the Male Orphan School, where it was pronounced to taste rather like a decent Burgundy. This copy has a wonderful colonial association, being presented by Busby to the Reverend Robert Cartwright (1771-1856), a philanthropic pastor based at Liverpool who was on friendly terms with Macquarie. Cartwright had been one of those encouraged to emigrate by Samuel Marsden, arriving in Sydney in 1810 and becoming an energetic and popular figure in the Hawkesbury before his transfer to Liverpool in 1819. It was Cartwright who accompanied Macquarie to Lake Bathurst in 1820, and who preached a famous sermon there. Apart from a brief unhappy stint at the fashionable St James in Sydney, Cartwright is remembered for a long and useful career in the remoter corners of New South Wales from Canberra to Albury. He had a lifelong concern for the Aborigines, and although many of his plans were met with polite indifference, he "had enunciated some important principles of Aboriginal welfare policy" (ADB). Busby is known to have been assiduous in making sure that copies of his book got into the hands of influential figures in New South Wales, particularly those who lived outside the city, and although Cartwright is not recorded as trying his hand as a vigneron, no doubt Busby hoped that it might yet be perused by interested settlers in the local vicar's library. This hope must explain the curious early manuscript note pasted in at the rear, which gives brief details of "Mr. Archdeacon Scott's instructions for the Vineyard & making wine at the M.O.S. here", followed by a brief but significant account of the process of making some 152 gallons of what must have been a rather robust local wine. This is significant because "Scott" refers to Thomas Hobbes Scott, who had worked as a wine-merchant in Bordeaux before travelling to New South Wales as the secretary to Thomas Bigge. Scott had been appointed Archdeacon of NSW (then part of the Calcutta diocese) in 1824. Indefatigable in his work, Scott took particular pains with his schools, and the initials "M.O.S." of course refer to the Male Orphan School. This connection with the M.O.S. is critical, as it was here that Busby himself had his first appointment in 1824, and where for three years he took charge of the school farm and taught viticulture, before he lost the position when the school came under the control of the trustees of the Church and School Corporation in 1827 (ADB). What this means is that this marvellous copy was at the epicentre of the fledgling Australian wine industry centred around the work of Busby, and itself provides a clue to the connection between Cartwright and Scott, and concrete evidence of Busby's book being used as a practical guide to winemaking in the colony (on Scott generally see R. T. Wyatt, 'A Wine Merchant in Gaiters: Thomas Hobbes Scott, Archdeacon of N.S.W., 1824-1829', Journal and Proceedings (Royal Australian Historical Society), 35: 3 & 35:4, 1949).

Views of the Country Seats of the Royal Family, Nobility and Gentry of England,

London: R. Ackermann and Co., 1830. - A Fine Selection of Hand-Colored Aquatint PlatesFrom Ackermann's Repository of ArtsIn a Beautiful 'Regency' BindingACKERMANN, Rudolph, publisher. [A collection of two hundred and thirty plates from Ackermann's Repository of Arts]. London: R. Ackermann and Co., [1809-1826]. Royal octavo (9 x 5 7/8 inches; 230 x 150 mm.). Containing 98 hand colored aquatint plates of the Views of the Country Seats of the Royal Family, Nobility and Gentry of England, plus 55 duplicate plates. In addition there are 75 hand colored and 2 plain aquatint 'furniture' plates including curtains, flower stands, tables, chairs, book cases, library tables and chairs, sideboards, etc. and two plain plates, making a grand total of 230 plates, one plate detached. A few of the Country Seats have their names corrected in ink and dated 1824.Contemporary full 'Late Regency' red straight-grain morocco, covers elaborately bordered in gilt surrounding a diamond-shaped central panel with a large and elaborate gilt design in the center, this in turn is surrounded on the four corners by equally gilt decorated green morocco onlays. Spine richly decorated and lettered in gilt, two elaborately gilt decorated labels, decorative gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt, pink paper endpapers. Joints and corners a little rubbed, binding at some time restored by the Abrams Bindery, Wellington, Somerset with their small ticket on rear paste-down.We have been unable to identify the binder but this is a very flamboyant and beautiful binding by one of the very best finishers of the early nineteenth century."No record of Regency society is more vivid than Rudolph Ackermann's celebrated journal . it devoted space to all things fashionable and every month for almost 25 years included hand-colored plates of furniture, drapery and interiors, providing an unrivalled visual record of Regency taste and design. Ackermann was an astute populariser, identifying what was fashionable at the time and presenting it to the public. It is therefore possible to follow the decorative ideas of the Regency period from year to year. Early issues of the Repository enthusiastically promoted the Grecian style, which had come from France and was introduced to London particularly by Henry Holland and Thomas Hope; later issues reflect the arrival of the French Empire style, with its Roman allusions, developed by the designers Percier and Fontaine. Sometimes Ackermann's plates represent the particularly English taste for the picturesque. The revived Gothic style is depicted most notably in the remarkable series of plates by the elder Pugin, and the Egyptian style also figures prominently.Furniture for dining rooms, drawing rooms, studios and boudoirs, cabinets, bookcases, bureaux, plant stands, chaises longues - indeed, every facet of Regency furniture from window drapes to mechanical chairs is accurately portrayed and described.Rudolph Ackermann was apprenticed at the age of 17 to a carriage designer at Hueningen, near Basel, under whom he worked for three years. In 1783, now a qualified designer, he took the first decisive step of his career and travelled to Paris, where he entered the employment of the fashionable carriage maker Antoine Carassi . When sometime before 1786, Ackermann moved to London, he therefore brought with him not only expertise in the design and fitting of Haute Carrosserie but also familiarity with the latest developments in fine arts in Europe . In 1795, he opened an establishment at 96 The Strand that was at once publishing house, print shop, art supplier and drawing school . By 1797, the business was so successful that Ackermann moved to 101 The Strand, closer to the Royal Academy's premises in Somerset House. The emphasis on fine art was now increased, with a larger drawing class and a picture gallery. Ackermann's confidence in his new status was marked in 1798 by the naming of 101 The Strand as "The Repository of the Arts." (Stephen ]ones).Abbey, Life, 212. Tooley, 13. Hardie, pp. 110-112.

Sylva Britannica; or, portraits of forest trees, distinguished for their antiquity, magnitude, or beauty. Drawn from nature

London: published for the Author by Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown and Green, 1830. Imperial octavo. (11 x 7 1/2 inches). Additional title on india paper mounted with etched vignette, 49 etched plates by Strutt, all on India paper mounted. Original oatmeal-coloured cloth, rebacked. Provenance: Edward Kynaston Bridger (d.1898, armorial bookplate); William Russell Grace (1832-1904, armorial bookplate) An attractive copy of the first octavo edition of this charming work: the deluxe issue with the plates all printed on india paper. Rather than concentrating on generic descriptions of species of trees (although these are given), Strutt here provides a portrait in words and pictures of 50 of the greatest trees or stands of trees in England and Scotland: a snapshot of the trees as they stood in 1830. "Greatest" is here interpreted by Strutt in various ways: tallest, largest girth, largest spread, oldest, etc. The preponderence of the examples given are oaks (21), but he also includes examples of elm (6), beech (2), ash (2), chestnut (4), cedar (3), yew (3) and one each of lime, poplar, willow, plane, maple, sycamore, Scotch fir, silver fir and larch. This work was first published by Strutt in 1826 in a folio format, and was available by subscription at 9 guineas for the normal issue or for the issue with the plates on india paper 15 guineas (a list of the subscribers to this folio edition is included in the present octavo edition). For the present work, the folio plates were reduced and the folio text was modified to allow for the re-ordering of the trees into more coherant groupings. As with the folio edition, this work was offered in two forms: at £1 11s. 6d. for the normal issue or 3 guineas for the deluxe issue with the plates on india paper (as here). The early owner of this copy, William Russell Grace, the co-founder of W.R Grace and Co., was an American success story who rose from relative poverty to be one of the richest men in the country. He was also a noted philanthropist and served two terms as Mayor of New York. Lowndes III, p.2534; Nissen BBI1907.

Vratislaviae (i.e. Wrocklaw, Poland): [Privately published by] J.D. Grueson, 1830. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. VERY GOOD. 4to. 58 pp. COMPLETE with 18 lithographic plates. Original nineteenth-century boards, printed label on upper cover. Some minor foxing, but overall in excellent antiquarian condition, completely unsophisticated, with many gatherings unopened. Important and very early work on plant pollens by the brilliant Bohemian polymath Jan Evangelista Purkinje (1787-1869), illustrated with 18 full-page lithographs. According to DSB, Purkinje was inspired by his colleague A.W. Henschel, and "studied plant structures, mainly the elastic fibrous cells of the anthers and the form of the pollen and spores in relation to the mechanism of their dispersion. In his extensive comparative study, combining anatomy with physiology, he distinguished structural types, and drew attention to mechanical factors and the role of cells in the differentiation of plant tissues. His dynamic concept was recognized mainly by French botanists." Purkinje is justly considered to be a pioneer experimental physiologist whose investigations in the fields of histology, embryology, and pharmacology helped create a modern understanding of the eye and vision, brain and heart function, mammalian reproduction, and the composition of cells. He may have been Swiss, or from Courmayeur. Bel exemplaire.. Exceptional large colorplate book on the traditions and customs in the city of Rome at the beginning of the 19th century and at the same time an important testimony for cultural history in general. Illustrated by 72 magnificent full page lithographs all originally colored by hand. The artist portrayed the inhabitants and their daily life in the city, from Pope to pauper, from the many religious processions and rites to the various entertainments such as horse races, bull fighting and ball games. Rather than roman sculptures and the remains of old temples, Thomas drew in great detail the things he saw in the city during his stay at the villa Medici from November 1816 to December 1818. Beggars, pilgrims, undertakers, merchants, missionaries. His work was lithographed by Francois le Villain in Paris and finely handcolored. The 44 p. of text are the author's descriptions accompanying the plates. In a fine, red half-morocco, recent binding with corners, and gilt spine. In all a fine copy.Seconde edition. Please notify before visiting to see a book.
