Interieur de New York, rue de Provost et Chapel, No. 3.

Ardit & Coindet,, Paris & London: 1830 - A handsome color lithograph of a snowy city scene at Provost Street and Chapel, from Jacques Milbert's superlative collection of views entitled "Itineraire Pittoresque du Fleuve Hudson et des Parties Laterales de l'Amerique du Nord.". Milbert, who trained as an engineer, came to the United States in 1815 and stayed for 7 years. As drawing was a compulsory part of any engineers training, he was to show his talent in the quality of the 53 views he made of places he visited. They form one of the most accurate portrayals of the Northeast in the period. They are also an early example of the use of lithography for topographical prints. 'As an artist, Milbert loved to paint American landscapes, particularly those which showed the Hudson, "King of Rivers," flowing majestically through the mountains . The pictures of what he saw, as of the time he drew them, constitute a unique and valuable record.' ((Sherman, 'A French Explorer in the Hudson Valley'). Titles in French, English, Latin and German. Lithograph with later hand color, very clean, some fox spotting and one closed tear in wide margins not affecting image. Printed image 12 1/2 x 9 3/4" includes caption, with large margins (19 1/2 x 13").

        Vidocq.

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

A Report of the Trial of Thomas Clewes for Murder of Richard Clewes

1830. The Oddingley Murder Trials [Trial]. Wills, William [Clewes, Thomas, Defendant]. A Report of the Trial of Thomas Clewes, For the Murder of Richard Hemming, And of the Proceedings Upon Several Indictments Against the Said Thomas Clewes, And Against John Barnett and George Bankes, Touching the Murders of the Said Richard Hemming, And the Rev. George Parker. At the Worcester Assizes, March 11, 1830, Before Mr. Justice Littledale. By Mr. William Wills, Attorney at Law; to Which Are Added the Defences Intended to Have Been Made by Bankes and Barnett; Inserted by the Permission of Their Attorneys. London: Longman & Co.; And J.C. Barlow, Birmingham, [1830]. 51, [1] pp. Octavo (8" x 5"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into recent marbled boards, printed paper title label to spine. Moderate toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves, internally clean. A rare title. * Only edition. The Oddingley murders took place in June 1806. Rev. George Parker, Rector of Oddingley, was found in a meadow in the village, dying from a gunshot wound to the stomach. Witnesses saw the assailant. From their description he was identified as Richard Hemming. He wasn't located alive, but his skeleton was found 24 years later buried in a barn. At the time of the 1806 murders, that barn was leased by a farmer named Thomas Clewes. After his arrest, Clewes admitted his knowledge of the murders. He said a trio of farmers hired Hemming to murder their late rector because of a long- running dispute over tithes. Then, without a stated motive, one of them killed Hemming. The discovery of the murderer's skeleton 24 years later, followed by a lurid confession, transformed a local story to a national event. People expected the trial of Clewes, John Barnett and George Banks, the two surviving conspirators named by Clewes, to result in a triple hanging. The men were not convicted, however, due to legal technicalities, witnesses who contradicted themselves and, most important, a lack of solid evidence beyond Clewes's confession.         JOHN MEREDITH READ - REPUBLICAN PARTY FOUNDER - LEDGER w/ 100s PENNSYLVANIA NAMES 1830-1880

1830. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. ACCOUNTS LEDGER BOOK of JUDGE JOHN MEREDITH READ of PENNSYLVANIA from 1830 through the SETTLING OF HIS ESTATE - AS RECORDED AND SETTLED by MICHAEL MEYLERT also of PENNSYLVANIA. JOHN M. READ was a FOUNDER OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, JUDGE ON PENNSYLVANIA SUPREME COURT, PROMINENT PENNSYLVANIAN. His Grandfather GEORGE READ was a SIGNER of the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE and the CONSTITUTION. MICHAEL MEYLERT was the FOUNDER of LAPORTE, PENNSYLVANIA, and a PROMINENT PENNSYLVANIAN. From the front pastedown: "With the above exceptions, all the Accounts in this RED BOOK... are in the Schedule made out by MEYLERT for JUDGE READ". FILLED with NAMES and TRANSACTIONAL ACCOUNTS of HUNDREDS of Notable PENNSYLVANIANS. Dates run from 1830 to 1883, the year of death of MICHAEL MEYLERT who was settling the estate. Leather Bound Ledger Book, 5.5x7.5, 209 pages. All pages, including endpapers, filled in with manuscript writing and accounting. An important look at the estate of JUDGE JOHN M. READ and his extensive list of Creditors and Associates. READS LIKE A WHO'S WHO IN PENNSYLVANIA at the time. Each account lists the name of the creditor or debtor. Transactions are listed by date. When settled the accounts were lined out in blue. The amounts of MONEY and LAND settled in these accounts is quite significant for the time. Many of the accounts were passed on from one deceased person / estate to another to another, with all being named (e.g. one account title: Chester Bucks late, Martin Blodier late, Irad Goodell late, Ezekiel Barr). Pennsylvania counties involved include: Luzerne, Lycoming, Sullivan, Philadelphia, and others. Named Accounts in this Ledger include William Nesbitt, Daniel and John Brewster, Clark Camp, Henry McCracken, Francis Strathers, Hiram Washburn, Archibald Snell, Joseph Snell, Samuel Kellum, Isaac McPherson, William F. Middaugh, Eli Gibbs, Rosanna Barr, Michael Fee, Philip Steel, Joel Miller, George Hunsinger, Christian Hunsinger, Daniel S. Robinson, Levi Walker, Harry L. Pepper, Michael McIntyre, Ellis Dunlap, Abel Platt, Calvin W. Churchill, Abraham Van Fleet, William Sweet, and many more. The names deserve researching. The few I researched were significant, including "Isaac McPherson, late," who was a correspondent of Thomas Jefferson. The accounts are not arranged alphabetically, however there is a manuscript alphabetical index of all the names on the early pages. LOTS of names, lots of cross-referencing. The accounting contains detailed notes regarding what was paid and what it was paid for, exact dates of payments, what land transacted and the land values, etc. Many of the accounts also have notes, some regarding relatives who were unhappy with settlements and who had to be informed of the exact details by "M" (Michael Meylert). Condition: The covers are worn, scraped and rubbed, worn through at the corners and spine ends, with the leather covering peeling at some places; nonetheless these original leather covers are still doing their job well. The binding is shaky but holding, the inner hinges have fully split at a number of places exposing the inner binding and threads that still hold the pages together. There is a stain with shorelining to the front margin area of the first and last 15 or so pages, dark on the endpapers growing lighter until it disappears, the manuscript writing is always legible beneath. The manuscript writing is clear and written legibly, it is lighter on some pages than others but always readable except on 2 pages that are very soiled, like those two pages were stepped on with muddy boots back in the 1800s. An important and rare look at the genealogy of notable families of Pennsylvania that had business or other financial ties to Judge John M. Read. You can find a lot about JOHN MEREDITH READ and about MICHAEL MEYLERT by searching various Pennsylvania Historical websites.

Herbarium Album of dried flowers and leaves

England. Half Calf, Marbled Boards, Leather Ownership Label on Board. Very Good. Neatly organized and labeled herbarium, with calligraphic writing throughout. N.d., circa 1830, based on binding. 4to. 32 by 27 cm. 82 leaves with herbarium on rectos. An example is what is called the "First Grand Division: Acotyledonous plants", which is divided into Fungi, Algae, Licenes, Hepaticae, Musci, Filices, all of which have a multitude of examples tightly arranged and quite striking on the page. Mrs. Hitchcock sets forth 101 categories, with two other "Grand Divisions": Moncotyledonous Plants, Dicotyledonous Plants. There are often multiple samples in a particular category, and so the number of separate samples is easily more than 200. Generally there are one to four specimens on a page, with occasionally far more, as in the first few categories. The arrangements are sometimes artistically arranged into a bouquet, but most of the time they are just neatly arranged as in any carefully compiled herbarium. Many, but not all, samples also carry there own hand-written label. The organization of the whole herbarium shows that this was not an album in which the collector merely pasted samples as they were found, but rather, things were done with an over-arching purposefulness, and while Mrs. Hitchcock may have been an amateur botanist, she had a serious intent and design. The dried flowers are generally well-preserved, with occasional losses, as tends to occur with thin, dry organic material. Offsetting rampant on versos, as inevitable with organic material. Rebacked, with matching calf to corners, and raised bands. Original spine label preserved and mounted. Original marbled boards and centerpiece leather label.

London: N. Whittock 16mo (12.2 x 112.9 cm, 4.75 x 44.45"). [1] f.; 17 col. plts.. [ca. 1830] Marvelous Oxford memorabilium offering => 17 hand-colored illustrations (two with two figures) of men in various types of academic dress associated with the University of Oxford, drawn, engraved, and published by Nathaniel Whittock. The contents unfold accordion-style in one long strip, in a => leporello binding. The background of the images is blank, but in other copies we have had, there is continuous from panel to panel, a panorama of the University. Fully extended, the array of images is => over three and a half feet long. Binding: Publisher's red cloth, front cover with gilt-stamped title in decorative gilt-stamped medallion and blind-stamped corner fleurons. Binding as above, hinge (inside) with loss of paper and boards slightly askew; cloth a little loose or bubbled and with some lightened sections.         AN INQUIRY INTO THE DOCTRINES OF THE ANGLO-SAXON CHURCH, IN EIGHT SERMONS

Oxford: Samuel Collingwood, Printer to the University, for C. J. G. and F. Rivington, 1830. FIRST EDITION n. Hardcover. With an Especially Beautiful Painting of Canterbury Cathedral. 220 x 140 mm (8 3/4 x 5 1/2"). xxvii, [i], 478 pp. FIRST EDITION. Very decorative contemporary deep purple straight-grain morocco, covers with a frame of multiple gilt and blind fillets and featuring a dense gilt roll, interlacing at medians, and broad-leaf ornaments, broad raised bands, spine compartments with interlaced lobed ribbons, cornerpieces, and central massed tools, turn-ins gilt-ruled, moir? silk endleaves, all edges gilt, and WITH A VERY PLEASING FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL. Housed in an unusually fine heavily gilt pebble-grain morocco clamshell box in convincing imitation of the present binding. Front pastedown with an armorial bookplate ("Souvenez St. Quentin"), front free endpaper with the morocco bookplate of Lucy Smith (Doheny) Battson. Lower cover with uneven fading, spine darkened (with consequent dulling of gilt), light wear to extremities and joints, otherwise an excellent copy, the once extremely pretty binding still appealing (with glistening gilt on covers), the text very bright, fresh, and clean, and the fore-edge painting perfectly preserved. This is a volume containing a work of substantial interest in its time and enhanced by a splendid fore-edge painting that reflects the book's content. The well-balanced painting here depicts an imposing Canterbury Cathedral against a richly blue sky with large, billowing gray and white clouds. Pairs of trees flank our view of the town of Canterbury in the proximal foreground, and a small herd of cows is right of center. The distinctive treatment of clouds and pointilistic brush strokes for detail are hallmarks of the style of the very skillfull artist called the "Dover Painter." The work of this artist is always excellent, but this painting takes a place among his best for its multiplicity of detail, its convincing sense of space, and the deftness of its execution. A provincial schoolmaster, rector, and vicar before becoming chancellor of St. Paul's Cathedral, Henry Soames (1785-1860) authored a number of significant works on ecclesiastical history. Now rarely seen for sale, the present group of sermons was part of the prestigious Bampton Lectures, a series of annual addresses that began in 1780 and that especially in the 19th century occasioned considerable interest and controversy.

THE DOOM OF DEVORGOIL, A MELO-DRAMA. [and] AUCHINDRANE; OR THE AYRSHIRE TRAGEDY

Edinburgh: Printed by Ballantyne for Cadell and Company, Edinburgh, and Simpkin and Marshall, London, 1830. First Separate and Complete Edition n. Hardcover. A Presentation Copy from Sir Walter Scott. 229 x 152 mm (9 x 6"). 2 p.l., iii, [iii], [9]-337, [1], 4 (ads) pp. First Separate and Complete Edition. Attractive late 19th century dark green armorial morocco by MacLehose of Glasgow (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers gilt with the heraldic pelican crest of Thomas Glen Arthur of Garrick House, Ayr, flat spine with title at head and author at tail and five gilt ornaments in between (comprised of three thistles and two heraldic devices), gold endleaves, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed (front hinge and joint with careful repairs, front free endpaper and first flyleaf cut near gutter and reattached with cellotape). A LARGE PAPER PRESENTATION COPY, first preliminary blank with neat ink inscription, "From the Author." Front flyleaf with later pencilled inscription, "To my dear friend / Frank P. Leffingwell / From / Harry A. Sickles / Christmas / 1917." Todd and Bowden 239A. Short crack beginning at bottom of front joint, a hint of fading and leather dressing residue to covers, otherwise in excellent condition, the binding solid and lustrous, the text clean and fresh, and the margins very commodious. A thoroughly Scottish item, this volume was appropriately and attractively bound by a Scottish binder, was once owned by an important Scottish collector, and was a presentation copy from one of the greatest authors Scotland has ever produced. The first English-language author to be recognized internationally in his lifetime, Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was, in the words of DNB, "a radical inventor of literary forms," including, especially, the modern historical novel. Our two pieces are short works of poetic drama that involve homicide, ghosts, goblins, and fairies. Originally intended for presentation on the stage, they were deemed unsuitable as dramatic vehicles and ended up being published as extracts in periodical publications. Our 1830 printing is the first complete and separate form of the text, which Scott revised in anticipation of this edition. James MacLehose (1811-85) began his career in 1838 as a Glasgow bookseller, at first in partnership, and then on his own. In 1862 a bindery was added to the enterprise, and in 1881 he brought into the business his two sons, who continued it after his death. The MacLehose workshop produced high quality bindings, and catered in particular to book collectors. The man who commissioned this binding, Thomas Glen Arthur (1858-1907) of Garrick House, Ayr, was a successful clothing merchant and textile manufacturer in Glasgow. He was an avid collector of books, of Dutch and Barbizon paintings, and of fine prints (particularly by Whistler). In 1888, he married the eldest daughter of Sir James Coats, Baronet of Auchendrane in Ayrshire ("Auchindrane" in the title is a variant spelling). In an amusing coincidence, the murderous John Mure of Auchendrane in the second work here is an Ayrshire baron. In light of Walter Scott's immense popularity, it seems strange to note that presentation copies--in his hand or (as here) in the hand of a publisher or secretary--are quite uncommon.

Observations on the Dimensions of the Ships of the Line and Frigates in the French Navy

London: Printed for Private Distribution,, 1830 . Translated from the French by a British Officer. Octavo. Original drab boards, paper spine label. Armorial bookplate of Admiral Sir Thomas Cochrane to the front pastedown. A little worn, some splitting and chipping with minor repairs to the spine, light toning, else a very good copy. First edition in English of a French study which first appeared in the Annales Maritimes in 1822, "it was also printed by order of the French Government at the Royal press, for distribution among its own functionaries" (translator's preface). In emulation of this principle of limited distribution, a note verso of the title reads, "It is requested that none of the copies of this translation be used for purposes of publication". Uncommon, Copac shows just 7 locations, OCLC adds a further 9, mostly in the United States, all unattributed. A pencilled inscription to the title page "From Captain Wm. Jones RN" suggests that it is the work of the William Jones, who made captain in 1828, and is commemorated by a memorial at Haslar Hospital, Gosport: "'Sacred To The memory of Commodore William Jones Late Commanding Her Majesty's Ship Penelope on the West Coast of Africa, where by his judicious arrangements 115 Slave Vessels were captured and 6738 Human Beings were released from Slavery between 1st April 1844 and 12th March 1846. Unwilling to relinquish his Labours until the Energies of Life were Exhausted, he returned to Spithead on the 8th but to die in this Hospital on the 24th of May 1846 aged 54 Years. Intelligence, Zeal, and Perseverance marked the Course of his Active Life and in his Last Hours". Tupinier's work suggests the adoption of the American system of construction, and the translator is concerned that the result would hand an advantage to the French fleet. The two-decked French ships which had originally carried 80 or 74 guns were being replaced by two new rates one of a hundred 30-pounders, and the other with 96. Their frigates, originally armed with 18-pounders, were similarly being upgraded to carry either 60 30-pounders, or 52 24-pounders. These changes strike the translator as ominous; "I presume, that there can be no question, as to the right of every country, to prepare its naval or military means of defence, upon such a scale as may not give reasonable umbrage to its neighbours. But, this new mode of naval construction, is in fact, anything but defensive …", and he signs off with the watchword "Keep foreigners from fooling us". Jones directed the work at "those whose stations, or service, entitle them to hold influential opinions on naval affairs", and he could not have chosen a more suitable recipient than Thomas Cochrane, Britain's pre-eminent exponent of frigate warfare; the man dubbed Le Loup de Mer by Napoleon; and who had just recently returned to Britain following his exploits in the wars of liberation in South America and Greece. An unusual, uncommon and interesting title with superb provenance.

The costumes of the members of the University of Oxford

The series begins with a "scholar," proceeds to a pair of commoners, then to a "Gent[lema]n Commoner, undress gown," on to a "Gent[lema]n Commoner, dress gown," with noblemen, bachelors, masters, doctors, proctors and so one, closing with the impressively bedecked Chancellor; the Doctor of Music is notably fetching in this rendition, with a gracefully rippled music score held in one hand. Staining to front pastedown and endpaper, and action of old glue visible at two "seams" where plate sequences are joined, but interior otherwise clean and with all images bright and crisp.
