Mémoires de Lord Byron publiés par Thomas Moore EDITION ORIGINALE

Paris: Alexandre Mesnier, 1830. Fine. Alexandre Mesnier, Paris 1830, 5 tomes en 5 Vol. in 8 (12,5x20,5cm), relié. - Original French edition, translated by Louise Belloc, published the same year as the original English. Dedication to Sir Walter Scott. Half cherry shagreen. Smooth back decorated with irons cold and hot wheels; title and volume number browned. Flat black glossy croisillonné. Cloudy few bites. Some friction on the back. Nice copy. In accordance with the wishes of Byron, Thomas Moore undertook memories of the author. By bringing together its various parts diaries which were entrusted to him, many letters and documents, Thomas Moore tried a realistic biography, far from the sultry legend that has long hovered on the existence of Lord Byron, for which the women fainted as his diabolical reputation preceded him. Buffer Amirault in title page. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

[Op 66] Autograph musical manuscript sketches for the Études caractéristiques for piano, op 66, signed "H J Bertini" at upper right corner of fol 6r

[ca. 1830]. Folio (350 x 265 mm.). 1 bifolium + 5 single leaves, all uncut. Notated in ink on various papers, mostly of 18-staves; one leaf (fol. 2) in significantly smaller format (293 x 225 mm.) with 14 staves only. With numerous autograph annotations in French and deletions in red crayon. Undated. fol. 1r: "Suite du Rondo. (Petite Partition)" fol. 1v: "Etude 31" fol. 2r.: "Suite de L'Etude 31" fol. 2v: "Etude 30" fol. 3r: no title fol. 3v.: no title (different composition) fol. 4r.: "Etude 33" fol. 4v: "34e Etude" fol. 5r: continuation of previous fol. 5v: no title (different composition; notated upside down) fol. 6r: "Suite aux Etudes dédiés a [?]Cramer 24me Etude" fol. 6v: "27e [originally: 26e] Etude" fol. 7r: continuation of previous; then "Etude 26" fol. 7v: various untitled sketches, the last of them with instrumental cue, "Violons" The following etudes can be identified, all with differences from the printed editions: "Etude 25" = op. 66, no. 1 "Etude 26" = op. 66, no. 4 "Etude 27" = op. 66, no. 9 "Etude 30" = op. 66, no. 12 "Etude 31" = op. 66, no. 5 "Etude 33" = op. 66, no. 21 (beginning different) "Etude 34" = op. 66, no. 3 Some other sketches, including the one with the instrumental cue, remain unidentified. Slightly worn and soiled; some stains and bleeding; edges slightly frayed. . Bertini's twenty-five Études caractéristiques, op. 66, were first published by Schott in Mainz in 1830. They are but one installment of his approximately 500 published etudes for piano, which range from simple exercises for beginners to concert etudes like the op. 66 set. These pieces by Bertini were among those that formed the background for Chopin's Études. Interestingly, the deletions in red crayon relate to passages eventually included in the published editions. "[Henri] Bertini spent his childhood in Paris and was the pupil of his father, but more especially of his brother [Auguste Bertini], who passed on the fruits of ClementiÂ’s teaching. At the age of 13 he was taken on tour by his father, playing in Belgium, Holland and Germany. Later he spent some time in London and Scotland before settling in Paris in 1821. His life was uneventful, devoted to giving concerts, teaching and the production of an immense number of compositions, reaching 180 opus numbers. As a player he had ClementiÂ’s clarity of technique and a style of phrasing akin to HummelÂ’s and MoschelesÂ’s. He was less brilliant in manner than Kalkbrenner and Herz, and was, according to Marmontel, no dreamer or Romanticist despite his association with the leading figures of the 1830s; he concentrated more on strict pedagogy. His compositions include numerous rondos, fantasias, variations, divertissements etc., and his studies were used for over a century. He published a nonet, six sextets for the piano and strings, and many smaller chamber works. Three nonets and three symphonies for the piano and orchestra are among his unpublished works." PRESENTATION COPIES "W(illiam) L(onsdale) (geologist see below) from the author" inscribed on half-title to Volume I and "Lieut. Lonsdale from the author" on front endpaper to Volume II (see below). 8vos, approximately 215 x 135 mm, 8½ x 5½ inches, Volume I: engraved frontispiece, 2 maps, 1 folding, 1 half page, 1 half page engraved view and 33 woodcuts in the text; Volume II: hand coloured aquatint frontispiece, folding hand coloured map, 8 woodcuts in the text, pages: Volume 1, xvi, 511 including index plus 17 page Murray catalogue dated June 1830; Volume 2, xii, 330, including index plus 16 page catalogue dated December 1831, half-title in Volume I, not called for in Volume II. Frontispiece in Volume 1 lightly spotted, plate 3 with 2 images lightly browned and slighly foxed, light offsetting on page 1 from folding map in Volume II, very occasional small pale mark to margins in both volumes, otherwise very good clean tight pair. This work has been called the most important scientific book ever. A stunning claim, but certainly Charles Lyell's Principles of Geology, published in 1830, shook prevailing views of how Earth had been formed. His book was an attack on the common belief among geologists and other Christians that unique catastrophes or supernatural events -- such as Noah's flood -- shaped Earth's surface. Lyell argued that the formation of Earth's crust took place through countless smaller changes occurring over long periods of time, all according to known natural laws. His proposal was that the forces shaping the planet have operated continuously throughout its history. He also wrongly assumed that these causes must have acted only with the same intensities now observed, which would rule out asteroid impacts and the like. Darwin read Lyell's landmark text while on the Voyage of the Beagle, and was much inspired by it. His own experiences during the voyage backed up Lyell's theories of how the shifting crust of the Earth was one of these long-acting, gradual, shaping forces. William Lonsdale (1794-1871) became a serious geologist and palaeontologist after a career in the army which ended in 1829. He wrote several papers on fossiles and won the Wollaston medal in 1846 for his research on the various kinds of fossil corals. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. Lonsdale from the author" on front endpaper to Volume II (see below). 8vos, approximately 215 x 135 mm, 8½ x 5½ inches, Volume I: engraved frontispiece, 2 maps, 1 folding, 1 half page, 1 half page engraved view and 33 woodcuts in the text; Volume II: hand coloured aquatint frontispiece, folding hand coloured map, 8 woodcuts in the text, pages: Volume 1, xvi, 511 including index plus 17 page Murray catalogue dated June 1830; Volume 2, xii, 330, including index plus 16 page catalogue dated December 1831, half - title in Volume I, not called for in Volume II. Handsomely bound in modern sdark green full morocco, single gilt ruled border with inset blind stamped border, gilt raised bands to spines, 5 gilt framed compartments with gilt motif, gilt lettering, new endpapers. His book was an attack on the common belief among geologists and other Christians that unique catastrophes or supernatural events - - such as Noah's flood - - shaped Earth's surface. His own experiences during the voyage backed up Lyell's theories of how the shifting crust of the Earth was one of these long - acting, gradual, shaping forces. William Lonsdale (1794 - 1871) became a serious geologist and palaeontologist after a career in the army which ended in 1829. He wrote several papers on fossiles and won the Wollaston medal in 1846 for his research on the various kinds of fossil corals. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE.         The Genealogy of the House and Surname of Setoun... with the Chronicle of the House of Setoun, Compiled in Metre

Edinburgh: William Aitken, Printer, 1830 Small 4to. Full calf, heavily blind-embossed and with gilt borders. xiii, 64pp. Frontispiece, full-page engraving, marbled endpapers and page edges. Very good. Expertly rebacked in calf with crimson leather label titled in gilt; mildly edgeworn; heavy foxing and bit of discoloration, mainly to preliminary leaves. Tight and attractive second edition of this slim study first published in an edition of 100 copies in Glasgow by Hutchins and Brookman in 1829. Maitland (1496-1586) was a Scottish poet, antiquarian, lawyer and statesman known as "Manly Maitland." In 1828 a Maitland Club was founded in Glasgow to continue his explorations into Scottish literary antiquities. This interesting copy bears a unique provenance, for it hails from the library of Prince Augustus Frederick (1773-1843), the first Duke of Sussex, sixth son of King George III. In 1844 Messrs. Evans auctioned off his vast collection of books in a six-part auction taking 61 days, selling 14,107 lots. In August the third part consisted of history, topography, voyages and travel. The right inner flyleaf of this volume bears a note in rich brown ink: "Bought by Boone Aug. 15, 1844 at the Sale of HRH D of Sussex's Library / Lot 904 [illegible but likely a price figure] Derby / Knowsley." The left inner flyleaf notes, "Knowsley / Private Library North Bookcase D / [East?] Division Shelf No. 11." The "Derby" who penned these statements was none less than Edward Smith-Stanley, the 13th Earl of Derby (1775-1851), English politician and well-known naturalist often remembered as artist Edward Lear's patron -- and, by the way, an officer of The Maitland Club. "Boone" was an agent or perhaps bookseller who is known to have acquired items for the Earl. "Knowsley" is Knowsley Hall, ancestral home of the Earls of Derby, still standing today, where many of the 13th Earl's natural history book collection still resides. The Earl of Derby's handsome armorial bookplate (with "Sans Changer" motto in scroll) graces the front pastedown. A choice association copy.

A treatise on the law of libel and the liberty of the press; showing the origin, use, and abuse of the law of libel: with copious notes and references to authorities in Great Britain and the United States: as applicable to individuals and to political and ecclesiastical bodies and principles

New-York: printed by G.F. Hopkins & Son, 1830. 8vo., xxxviii + (39)-184pp.,with a single page Catalogue of Liberal Books for Sale by G.W. & A.J. Matsell> of New York bound in, well bound in strong mid-20th century cloth, spine lettered in gilt. A very good copy of an influential book. First, and only, edition. McCoy C.558. Sabin 16619. A powerful argument favouring 'untrammelled discussion, in its utmost latitude'. 'The liberty of the press is a phrase in every body's mouth. It forms one of the common-place panegyrics of what are called free governments. It is one of the boasts of those who admire that nonentity the British constitution. It is supposed to flourish particularly in these United States, and to form a distinguishing feature of our American governments. I hardly know in which of them to look for it.' [p.39]. Thomas Cooper (1759-1839), 'president of Columbia College, in South Carolina, had 30 years earlier been the defendant in a sedition trial. His doctrines on a free press, he writes, grew out of the earlier statements of Milton (Areopagitica>, 1644), Anthony Collins (1724), his own earlier tract (1787), Robert Hall (1821), Samuel Bailey (1821), and Thomas Herttell (1828). His legal researches led him to protest against the common law doctrine of libel and blasphemy. Appendix I deals with heresy and blasphemy. The series was planned to secure a wide diffusion of good literature in cheap five shilling volumes, and Scott?'s ?"Letters,?" written and published in 1830, formed one of the earlier books in the collection."In the autumn of 1832, on the 21st of September, Sir Walter Scott died. The first warning of death had come to him in February, 1830, with a stroke of apoplexy. A few years yet of his own battle, while the shadows of night and death were gathering about him, and they were re-united. In these ?"Letters upon Demonology and Witchcraft,?" addressed to his son-in-law, written under the first grasp of death, the old kindliness and good sense, joined to the old charm in story-telling, stand firm yet against every assault; and even in the decay that followed, when the powers were broken of the mind that had breathed, and is still breathing, its own health into the minds of tens of thousands of his countrymen, nothing could break the fine spirit of love and honour that was in him. When the end was very near, and the son-in-law to whom these Letters were addressed found him one morning entirely himself, though in the last extreme of feebleness: his eye was clear and calm-every trace of the wild fire of delirium was extinguished: ?"Lockhart,?" he said, ?"I may have but a minute to speak to you. My dear, be a good man—be virtuous, be religious—be a good man. Nothing else will give you any comfort when you come to lie here.?" (Henry Morley. An introduction to Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft).Cohn, 188 (for the plates), Cohn, 731 (for the book)

- (1 l.), 55 pp., (1 p. [first table]), 5 additional tables [3 folding] on 4 ll. 4°, contemporary red morocco (minor wear at extremities), covers with gilt roll-tooled border and fillets, spine heavily gilt, green lettering piece with title, all edges gilt. Small stain along inner margin of title-page, otherwise clean and crisp. Overall in fine condition. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION (?) of this report on how Spain's provincial regiments had been reorganized and strengthened between 1823 and 1830. Alarmed by the sorry state into which the military had fallen since the Peninsular War and how ineffectively it had protected Ferdinand VII during the revolution of 1820, the Spanish government resolved to restore public order through military strength. The @Memoria offers a chronological account of the reforms instituted by the Conde de San Román, inspector general of the militia. Described are the "purification" of politically suspect persons and incompetents from the officer ranks; the retraining of officers in standard procedures; the formation of special Guardia Real divisions to protect the king; the procedures followed in instituting an unpopular draft; the mechanisms established to ensure financial accountability; and the provisioning of units with new uniforms and equipment. The report closes with a summary of the military actions throughout Spain in which the provincial regiments were engaged between 1824 and 1830, including the Catalonian uprising of 1828. Supplementing the report are six tables, broken down by region, listing various expenditures made and provisions distributed.---- Not in Palau. Not in Almirante. Not located in NUC.
