The Pilgrim's Progress with A Life of John Bunyan by Robert Southey

John Murray, London 1830 - Three volumes, complete Octavo. full burgundy morocco decorated in gilt, spines with raised bands and lettered in gilt, inner gilt and morocco dentelles, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, silk bookmarks, by Root. Illustrated with engravings. This set is extra illustrated with 313 plates. The Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come; Delivered under the Similitude of a Dream is a 1678 Christian allegory written by John Bunyan. It is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature, has been translated into more than 200 languages, and has never been out of print.Bunyan began his work while in the Bedfordshire county prison for violations of the Conventicle Act, which prohibited the holding of religious services outside the auspices of the established Church of England. Early Bunyan scholars such as John Brown believed The Pilgrim's Progress was begun in Bunyan's second, shorter imprisonment for six months in 1675, but more recent scholars such as Roger Sharrock believe that it was begun during Bunyan's initial, more lengthy imprisonment from 1660 to 1672 right after he had written his spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. The English text comprises 108,260 words and is divided into two parts, each reading as a continuous narrative with no chapter divisions. The first part was completed in 1677 and entered into the Stationers' Register on 22 December 1677. It was licensed and entered in the "Term Catalogue" on 18 February 1678, which is looked upon as the date of first publication. After the first edition of the first part in 1678, an expanded edition, with additions written after Bunyan was freed, appeared in 1679. The Second Part appeared in 1684. There were eleven editions of the first part in John Bunyan's lifetime, published in successive years from 1678 to 1685 and in 1688, and there were two editions of the second part, published in 1684 and 1686. - wikipedia. In June 1816 he opened a workshop in Paris. Engelmann is largely credited with bringing lithography to Franc and later, commercializing chromolithography. In 1837 he was granted an English patent for a process of chromolithography that provided consistently high-quality results. Throughout his life, he produced large numbers of prints, including numerous plates for Baron Isidore Justin SŽverin Taylor's celebrated collection of lithographs, ÇVoyages pittoresques et romantiques dans lÕancienne FranceÈ. Engelmann's Paris printing company, Engelmann et Graf was passed on to his son, Godefroy Engelmann II (born 1819), who carried on his father's work with the same high artistic quality until his own death in 1897.

Autograph letter signed; "H Bülow," to Hermann Wolff, September 13, 1892

-. A rectangular portion of a blank facet has been torn away; folded and spit at folds, with two old mends.. Two and a half pages, on three sides of a bifolium, approx. 5 X 8 in. A substantial and somewhat agitated letter from the great conductor to the concert impresario. Hans von Bülow (1830 -1894) was perhaps the most renowned conductor in Germany in the nineteenth century, instrumental in establishing the prominence of Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt, and Richard Strauss, among others. Hermann Wolff (1845-1902), the Jewish concert agent and impresario persuaded von Bülow to accept the position of principal conductor at the Berlin Philharmonic, helping to cement that orchestra's longterm reputation.

Early 19th Century Handwritten Mechanic's Lesson Book

Eastern Pennsylvania, 1830. Manuscript. Very Good. Folio. 40 pages, 33 of which have been written upon. No cover. Appears to be missing the first page of text, perhaps it was written inside the front of the missing cover. Sound string binding. Light wear and soiling to the first and last pages. The text is written in a very attractive hand with ornate calligraphic headers. Beautiful, detailed mechanical drawings throughout, two in color. This copybook is divided into three sections, "Mechanical Power," "Mechanics," and "Machinery". Theoretical lessons begin with the lever and progress through simple machines, forces, dynamics, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, and pneumatics. This is followed by lessons on various categories of machinery: steam, water, wind, gravity, etc. An exceptionally scarce piece of educational Americana. From an eastern Pennsylvania estate and said perhaps to have been created by an early student of Philadelphia's Franklin Institute of the State of Pennsylvania for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts which was founded in 1824. Engineering education was virtually non-existent before the Industrial Revolution and didn't begin in earnest until 1821 when the first Mechanic's Institute (the predecessor of Heriot-Watt University) was established in Scotland.

        Strafford: Tragedie en cinq Actes

[France] 1830 - A unique manuscript copy of Lally-Tolendal’s French tragedy Le Comte de Strafford, dedicated by a grateful pupil to her tutor. The play ‘en cinq actes et en vers’ was first published in London in 1795, and provides a dramatic interpretation of the life of Thomas Wentworth, First Earl of Strafford (1593–1641), a major figure in the period leading up to the English Civil War. From 1632–39 he was Lord Deputy of Ireland, where he established a strong authoritarian rule, and upon recall to England became a key adviser to Charles I, attempting to strengthen the royal position against Parliament. After failing in this, and making various advisements not to Charles’s liking, Wentworth was impeached and condemned to death for his ‘high misdemeanours’. Although more than a century after his death, the French Revolution saw an increasing vogue for Wentworth in royalist circles on both sides of the Channel and an ‘extraordinary Strafford cult seems to have developed among French conservatives both before and in the wake of the revolution’ (Merritt, The Political World of Thomas Wentworth). Indeed, the first biography of Strafford was published by a group of French exiles. The play’s author, Lally-Tolendal (1751–1830), was the legitimised son of a French landowner and military general of Irish Jacobite ancestry who was executed for failing to capture Madras, losing the Battle of Wandiwash and ultimately ceding French control of Pondicherry. Lally-Tolendal only discovered the secret of his birth on the day of his father’s execution, and thereafter devoted himself to clearing his name. With support from luminaries such as Voltaire he succeeded in persuading Louis XVI to annul the decree which had sentenced his father, but the parlement of Rouen ultimately decided in favour of Lally’s guilt, and his innocence was never fully admitted by French judges. In the play he draws explicit parallels between Strafford’s story and the destruction of his own father. Whilst the pupil here does not transcribe Lally-Tollendal’s dedicatory epistle or the list of subscribers, the text is clearly taken from, and is a faithful reproduction of, the printed play. Small 4to (209 × 168 mm), pp. [134], followed by 15 blank leaves; the first two pages with coloured floral calligraphy and the text of the play transcribed in neat cursive; original maroon morocco and stippled boards, somewhat scuffed, spine ends a little frayed, upper board slightly bowed; early ownership inscription.         Elémens de chimie théorique et pratique, avec l¿indication des principales applications aux sciences et aux arts, ouvrage dans lequel les corps sont classés par familles naturelles.

      - Paris, Méquignon-Marvis, 1830. 2 volumes in-8, [6]-IX-717-[1]p, 3planches & [4]-826-[1]p, 2 planches.

The Noble Game of Billiards wherein are exhibited extraordinary & surprising strokes which have excited the admiration of most of the Sovereigns of Europe, by Monsieur Mingaud, formerly Captaine d'Infanterie in the service of France ... Translated & Published by ... Thurston

London: published by John Thurston, 1830. Imperial octavo. (11 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches). Engraved title, folding uncoloured aquatint frontispiece, 1 engraved introductory plate, 40 hand-coloured engraved diagrammatic plates of various plays, extra-illustrated with a smaller-format (10 x 6 1/4 inches) 1p. letterpress prospectus tipped-in at the front. Original dark red half roan over marbled paper-covered boards, upper cover mounted with original green glazed-paper label with engraved title, the flat spine divided into compartments with double gilt fillets A fine copy of the rare first English edition of this highly-influential work, here with the very rare original prospectus. François Mingaud is variously credited with the invention of the modern leather cue tip or, more narrowly, with the rounded leather cue tip. His skill as a player and as an innovator and introducer of controlled spin to the game of billiards is universally acknowledged. He first shared many of the secrets of the techniques that he developed in his publication, Noble Jeu de Billard published in Paris in 1827. The present work is the first English edition of Mingaud's original: it was translated from French into English and published by the London billiard table manufacturer, John Thurston, who also had engraved plates prepared from the lithographic originals. In the preface, Thurston vouches for Mingaud's assertion that he had come up with "the most brilliant discoveries of modern times ... Fully impressed with the great merits of M. Mingaud's Illustrations, the Translator has felt anxious to lay them before the British Public. He is aware that, to the novice, many of the strokes in the work, may appear impracticable. He has, however, not only had the satisfaction of seeing them performed on his own tables, at his Ware-rooms ... by M. Mingaud himself; but has been surprised to perceive, how readily the results have followed, when attempted, according to the rules laid down, by gentlemen who boasted no superiority of skill." The popularity of Mingaud's work in England can be judged from the fact that it was re-issued in 1831, a second edition was published in 1833 and a third in 1836: all are now rare (there is only one other record of the present edition having sold at auction in the past thirty five years).         Silhouettes Militaires. De la Révolution et du 1er Empire Collection Bernard-Franck

      - An magnificent collection of 20 military costume mixed media oil paintings that were once part of a major French collection of militariana. N.d., 1830 to 1860 -- these were nostalgic portraits created during the reigns of Louis Philippe and Louis Napoleon (Napoleon III). Brisquet, the artist, apparently was set-up on the esplanade by les Invalides, certainly a logical place for a creator of military-related bric-a-brac to set up shop, so to speak, and seek to sell his wares. A variety of sizes, ranging in height between 34 and 45 cm, and width, 10 to 29 cm. We have 21 panels in all, with one containing a short textual description of the group. By mixed media, we are referring to the application of cut-outs, made mostly of very thick card, on board, giving the portraits and accessories a dimensionality. Some of these applied pieces are movable -- arms in particular -- or were meant to be so. Largely by dint of these cut-outs, the portraits have a folk art or naive quality. The soldiers are shown carrying firearms, flags, musical instruments, etc. Seldom is the portrait without some other element of interest, and always the background is enriched with a landscape suggestive of a rural battlefield or training ground. The portraits are all by the same artist, Brisquet, and they all are done in the same style. Based on the short explanatory panel, which describes him as a "Tir", which translates as a shooter, we would surmise that he was himself a veteran and possibly a resident himself of les Invalides. Portrayed are the following military figures, rendered in the original French and translated to English if needed: Generale Barthélemy Catherine Joubert, General Eduard Mortier (unlabeled on front), two panels of grenadiers (without further specificity), grenadier hollandais, grenadier de la Vistule (Polish grenadier), tirailleur (sharpshooter), sapeur de dragons, lancier Espagnol, fusilier, inspecteur aux regnes, porte-drapeau (flag bearer), tombour des volontaires (volunteer drummers), eclaireur a cheval jeune garde (young mounted guard and scout -- the portrait doesn't show the guard on horseback though), musicien chapeau Chinois (musician with a Chinese hat), two panels, not identical, of musicien d'Etat-Major, Legion Italique 1800, Flanqueur chasseur and a voltigeur (a member of a skirmish unit created by Napoleon). Each of the paintings is framed by brown strips of thick card, about 1 cm in width. At the base of each picture, excepting one, is a thin label, attached with brad nails, identifying for us who is being portrayed. We can assume that Brisquet made many more of these, and it seems probable that Bernard-Franck himself had many more, based on the numbering on the backs of many of the paintings. Still, we would consider this grouping to be more than ample and not conspicuously lacking in anything. Bernard Franck (1848-1924) was recognized as a leading collector of both militariana and Napoleonic era souvenirs. Born in Paris of a Jewish family, Franck ran a family business that manufactured military equipment. During the Franco-Prussian War he volunteered as a Zuoave. During his lifetime parts of his collection were loaned out for exhibition, starting with the Paris Exposition of 1900, and a part of his collection would be acquired by J.P. Morgan, who contributed it to the Metropolitan Museum. Many of the figurines in his collection are now owned by the Musée de l’Armée which is located in les Invalides. All the panels have rings on their back that can be used for hanging them. The majority of the paintings are darkened and could benefit from a cleaning. This we can discern based on a few that are considerably brighter and thus are obviously closer to their original, intended state of color. Never, though, are featured blurred beyond recognition. A few chips to the applique pieces -- a missing hand, a missing piece to a wood stump, etc. Some of what were meant to be movable pieces no longer function as such. None of thes

A report of the trial at bar, Rowe v. Brenton, tried in the Court of King's Bench, Westminster, Michaelmas Term, 9 Geo.IV. as to the right to minerals in the assessional lands of the Duchy of Cornwall, with explanatory notes; and an appendix, containing the records and documents as given in evidence. By George Concanen.

London: W. Walker. 1830. 8vo., folding coloured lithographic map (of 'Lands showing the situation of Nan Smellyn alias Lamellyn'), xliii + (2) + 334 + (1) + 236 + 8*pp., some general paper browning and scattered foxing, title-page foxed, several near-contemporary ink amendments and emphasis marks, contemporary half calf gilt over marbled boards, neatly rebacked preserving the original gilt spine, a presentation copy inscribed by the compiler ('Mr Wells with Mr. Concanen's compts'), >with the 19th century armorial bookplate of John Davies Enys>, a further presentation inscription, dated Feb. 1849. (Hardy Wells to William Eagle), and the small inkstamp on the fly-leaf of Cornwall Record Office. First edition: scarce. A landmark trial in the long and contentious history of the legal (and constitutional) status of the Duchy of Cornwall, mineral rights of private landowners, the power of the Stannary courts, and, by extension, the whole matter of Cornwall's peculiar semi-separate status within the United Kingdom. The Rowe-Brenton case itself was brought to 'try the right to copper ore raised from the East Crinnis mines' at Tewington in Cornwall. * This copy is further enhanced by the addition, at the end of the volume, of A short statement of the case of the late Sir William Clayton, Bart. and his lessees holding an estate at Kennington, under the constitution of the Duchy of Cornwall> (8pp. London, 1834). A very rare pamphlet of which we can locate a copy at BL but no other (not in OCLC).
