RINGGOLD, Samuel (1796-1846)
Supposedly the first officer killed in the Mexican-American War (the May 11th Battle of Palo Alto) was this U.S. Army artillery officer known as the "Father of Modern Artillery" for innovations such as a better saddle and the "flying artillery" -- lighter artillery pieces that can be moved from place to place. ALS, 1p lettersheet, 8" X 10", Ordnance Offices, New York, 12 December 1829. Addressed to Major Hoops. Very good. Handsomely, swiftly penned in rich brown ink, Ringgold here writes the military store keeper at Watervliet, New York, that "In October last I had the honour to transmit to you thro' the Quarter Master at this post by direction of the Ordc Department, together with invoices of the same certain ordnances and stores for which I have to beg you will furnish the usual receipts as the Quarter is nearly closed." After lengthy salutation and hurried signature, he adds rank of "Lt on ordc post / Com'g ordc dept." Integral address leaf also in his hand (and notes "'On public service'"). This is clearly a speedily penned note, and Ringgold's signature lacks the decorative paraph sometimes seen.

(Spain) Ballesteros, Louis Lopez
Cadiz: 1829. 4 pp with integral blank. 1 vols. 8 1/2" x 11" A translation of the Spanish King's decree making Cadiz a free port. Following the REgulations on the third page is a printed statement "... The King of Spain ... had declared Cadiz a Free port. The Regulations have since been received, and I now enclose You a translation of the same ..." Spain was clearly eager to attract traffic to the port and produced this document for English speaking sailors. The printed latter is signed "A. Burton" and is addressed to Jacob Wendell, who has also docketed it. Very good, a small tear from the seal being opened.

C.V. Laviosne
1829. This highly unique map was made by C. V. Lavoisne and published by John Satchell in London 1829. This map was originally published in "Lavoisne's Complete Genealogical, Historical, Chronological, and Geographical Atlas." Special to these maps is the fascinating description surrounding the map. This text discusses many of the following topics: boundaries, principal towns and populations, language, climate, produce, natural history, rivers, canals, mountains, government, islands, battles, colonies, seaports, and more. The map itself is very detailed, showing cities and towns, lakes and rivers, common roads, mountains, and canals. A wonderful map, full of history!

Rik230957 Versand D: 5,00 EUR
