Humboldt, Alexander:
London. 1814-1829. Seven volumes. Eight folding maps and charts. 19th-century three-quarter black morocco and marbled boards, spines gilt. Moderate rubbing. Occasional foxing and toning, mainly at first and last few leaves. Alexander von Humboldt's account of his monumental scientific expedition to South America and Cuba. Originally published in French between 1814 and 1825, this is the first edition in English, except volumes three and four which are stated second editions. This classic of scientific exploration was based on the researches of Humboldt and his companion, Aimé Bonpland, during their five-year excursion in South and Central America from 1799 to 1804. The volumes describe the voyage from Spain and the stop in the Canaries; Tobago and the first steps in South America; explorations along the Orinoco; Colombia and the area around Caracas; explorations in the northern Andes; and a visit to Cuba. "Humboldt and Bonpland traveled widely through South and Central America, studying meteorological phenomena and exploring wild and uninhabited country. At Callao, Humboldt measured the temperatures of the ocean current which came to bear his name." - Hill. The work is crammed with details and observations on every conceivable area of knowledge. A nice set of an important work. SABIN 33770. HOWGEGO H122. HILL 848. Coats, THE PLANT HUNTERS, pp.337-41. [Attributes: First Edition]

GRANDVILLE, Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard (1803-1847)
Paris: Bulla; and Brussels: Borella, [1829]. Oblong folio (250 x 338 mm). Scarce one-leaf letterpress introduction signed Achille Comte. 72 hand-colored lithographic plates by Joseph Langlumé after Grandville. Early-20th-century blue half morocco, spine gilt-lettered. Some occasional foxing, plate 31 shaved at outer margin, possibly inserted from another copy. Provenance: purchased from Marlborough Rare Books, 2004. FIRST EDITION OF GRANDVILLE'S FIRST MAJOR SUCCESS. "Hélas! Hélas! Quand donc les humains seront-ils aussi vrai, aussi naifs, aussi charmants que ces illustrations de Granville" (Carteret). In this series, Grandville satirizes the vices of contemporary society by substituting human heads with those of animals. Plates 1-71 are numbered and published by Bulla in Paris; plate 72 unnumbered but with the number added in manuscript (it was published by Borella in Brussels). There was another suppressed plate, not present in this copy. According to Renonciat, eight plates are in the first state and four with titles in French and English. While later impressions of this work are common, the first edition is quite scarce. Carteret III, pp. 282-4; Ray, French Illustrated Books, 132. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow.

D'Oyly, Sir Charles & Christopher Webb Smith
[Patna]: Behar Lithographic Press, 1829. Lithographed title page with vignette of hand-coloured birds within uncoloured frame and clouds. 25 x 30 cm approx. Charles D'Oyly was the best-known and most productive amateur British artist in India in the early 19th century. He studied with Chinnery in Calcutta in 1808. While acting as the East India Company's Opium Agent and later Commercial Resident at Patna, he founded the "Behar School of Athens", a light-hearted society of dilettanti artists like his wife and himself, and his friend Christopher Webb Smith. D'Oyly was the first artist to publish his own works through the newly-arrived medium of lithography. His first press sank to the bottom of the Ganges in a squall while being transported up-river from Calcutta, but a replacement arrived in September 1826. Most of D'Oyly's output comprised picturesque landscape and river scenes, but the leisure pursuits of hunting, shooting and fishing also featured prominently. Abbey suggests the superb colouring was done by Smith.

Printed by Subscription. London: Printed by R. Brown, 26, St. John-Street, Clerkenwell. 1829. 16mo, 11 x 17.8 x 4.8cm. Lodowicke Muggleton, 1609-98, "English religious leader, a journeyman tailor. With his cousin John Reeve, also a tailor, he founded a new sect, whose adherents were known as Muggletonians. In 1652, Muggleton and Reeve claimed to have been appointed by revelation as the two witnesses of Rev. 11.3, Reeve as the messenger and Muggleton as his mouthpiece in declaring a new spiritual dispensation. They denied the doctrine of the Trinity, teaching that God came on earth to die and left Elijah to be his vice regent in heaven. They held that God had a human body, that Eve was the incarnation of the evil spirit, and that the sun travels around the earth. Both Reeve and Muggleton were imprisoned (1653) for blasphemy; the former died in 1658."--"Muggleton, Lodowicke." The Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th ed. 2015. Encyclopediadotcom. 28 Sep. 2015 . The Muggletonians did not believe or practice any sort of evangelism but rather accepted those who came to them. In the long run this contributed to their demise. They were active through the 18th century and then again there was a revival of interest in the early 19th century encouraged in part by the efforts of the Frost brothers, Joseph and Thomas. Having made their fortune in the Derby Brass Foundry business, they moved to London and proceeded to use their resources to publicize Muggletonian literature and thought. Our volume of hymns is a product of their efforts. Bound in original plain gray paper over boards with printed t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Knight, Paul Slade:
Oxford, 1829. CLEAN!! No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Leather bound - Calfskin - Leather worn along edges. Has been professionally rebound. 5 raised bands and red leather pasted title block on spine with gilt decoration. Marbled edges. Thomas Cranmer (2 July 1489 â€" 21 March 1556) was a leader of the English Reformation and Archbishop of Canterbury during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI and, for a short time, Mary I. He helped build the case for the annulment of Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon, which was one of the causes of the separation of the English Church from union with the Holy See. Along with Thomas Cromwell, he supported the principle of Royal Supremacy, in which the king was considered sovereign over the Church within his realm. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
