Bourrienne Louis Antoine Fauvelet de
Chez Ladvocat, 1829. 10 voll. in-8° (220x141mm), pp. 370-400 ca. ogni volume, brossura editoriale con titolo entro bordura tipografica. Restauri di minima entità ai dorsi. Ottimo esemplare in barbe.

Broadside, [2]pp., 17 x 12 1/2 inches. Previously folded, with tears along fold lines repaired by tape on the verso. A few minor chips and small tears at edges. Two other small holes not affecting text. Lightly tanned and dampstained. Good. A broadside prospectus for the Bolivian periodical El Iris de la Paz, which was published from 1829 to 1839. A united, independent Bolivian state was officially established only four years previously in 1825, and this statement of intent strikes a particularly nationalist tone. In describing his purpose, the author of the proposal writes, "A este papel se ha querido dar le nombre de IRIS DE LA PAZ, para que dsde su titulo prevenga los lectores de que el objecto primario de su direccion es tratar los medios de conservar la armonia social, fomentar el respeto las leyes, sostenar con sanos principios la necesidad de un slido rjimen para la nacion, y cuanto conduzca cimentar entre nosotros la paz esterior, y la tranquilidad interior del Estado." An interesting and rare document of early South American independence. Not in OCLC.

ROSSINI, Gioachino 1792-1868
Mainz und Antwerpen: B. Schott's Söhnen. [PNs 3173, 3173.1-3173.21], 1829. First German Edition of the first version. Gossett, p. 523. IMSLP (list of publisher's plate numbers). OCLC no. 25458764. Guillaume Tell, to a libretto by Etienne de Jouy and Hippolyte-Louis-Florent Bis, based on Friedrich von Schiller's play Wilhelm Tell, was first performed in Paris at the Opéra on August 3, 1829. "Guillaume Tell, Rossini's last opera, is the new grand opéra he had been contracted to write under the terms of the agreement with the French government drawn up in 1824 at the time of his arrival as a resident in Paris... The choice of Schiller's Wilhelm Tell (1804) was both adventurous and shrewd. Whether or not Rossini intended this to be his last opera, it brings together elements of his art he had successfully developed over the previous 17 years. Schiller's original play engages themes in which the mature Rossini showed a special interest: among them, the political ideals of a conservative people who seek independence with peace, and the psychology of paternal relations. It also enabled Rossini to exploit further an underlying interest in the related genres of folk music, pastoral, and the picturesque." Richard Osborne in Grove Music Online.. Folio. Espinosa Prieto, Jose Maria
N.d. [before 1829]. Santa Fe de Bogota. 257 mm x 153 mm. Watercolor on paper.- Espinosa Prieto (1796 - 1883) was a Colombian artist, engraver and caricaturist; his careful observation of the daily life during his youth, artistic skill, keen sense of humour and irony, facilitated his renderings of the social and political reality of Colombia during the years of the Independence and formation of the new republic. His reputation swiftly grew, mainly for his caricatures portraying the most relevant and influent men of the republican elite, as well as the local costumes and way of life of the inhabitants of Bogota. Amongst his most famous portraits are those of Simon Bolivar (1828, which gained him recognition from Bolivar himself), Archbishop Mosquera, and Francisco de Santander. South American artists saw most of their production go into portraits, for the simple reason that it was the most sought-after sort of painting -and immediately paid by the people commissioning them-, this caricature, representing a curious aspect of the Bogota way of life is extremely rare. The Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia holds a considerable number of portraits, caricatures and miscellaneous works by him, none -to our knowledge- like this one. The drawing represents a game being played at a tavern or brothel; it is accomplished in striking colours, and shows men of civil stature, an army officer, and women. Provenance: "Ce dessin m'a eté donne à Bogota, par M le Duc de Montebello, le 13 aout 1829"; the Duke of Montebello was Louis Napoleon Lannes (1801 - 1874), sent to Bogota in 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]
