REISSIGER, Carl Gottlieb 1798-1859
Berlin: Fr. Laue [PNs 116-139], 1829. First Edition. OCLC nos. 258468166, 472314707, 894942653. Libella, to a libretto by Pauline von Brochowska (pseud. Theophania), was first performed in Dresden at the Hofoper on January 4, 1829. In 1826, Reissiger was invited "to succeed Weber as director of the Hofoper in Dresden. As a champion of German opera, he was at first harassed by pro-Italian factions, but his excellent performances of Oberon and Euryanthe won him approval, and in 1828 he was appointed Hofkapellmeister with responsibility for sacred music, chamber music and the music for the court theatre, a post he held until his death... Under his direction the Dresden Opera became acknowledged as the best in Germany; in 1842 he gave the first performance of Wagner's Rienzi and in 1843 welcomed its composer as second Kapellmeister... Reissiger embodied the dying tradition of the Kapellmeister-composer, and despite sound craftsmanship (Schumann described the construction of his piano trios as 'exemplary') his music has largely been forgotten." Imprenta Nacional, Madrid, 1829. "The author rescued the earliest and rarest records of American discovery". 5vols; 4to; ¾ XIX century Spanish calf, 3 maps and 2 plates (complete). Mixed edition (as usual) of this important work. Volumes 1, 2 are second editions- vols. 3, 4 & 5 are firsts. Fine set of this relation of Spanish voyages from the end of the fifteenth century, containing the text of many historical and hitherto unpublished documents referring to the discovery of America. The folding maps depict (1) North America and the Atlantic, showing the route followed by Christopher Columbus; (2) Tierra Firme and the West Indies, showing Columbus's course; and (3) Southern Florida, Cuba and Tierre Firme. The fourth volume, which refers to the voyages and discoveries of Magellan and Juan Sebastian de Elcano, in the Moluccas, contains an engraved portrait of the former, and an illustration of a statue of the latter. The fifth volume treats of expeditions to the Moluccas and the voyages of Loaisa and Saavedra, and contains the text of many original documents relating to these expeditions. Mr. Rich (Vol. II., p. 179,) devotes almost a page of encomium to this valuable work. Brunet characterizes it as an "important collection," and Washington Irving drew from it most of the material which forms the basis of his "Life of Columbus." It contains the original diary of the voyages of Columbus, compiled by B. de las Casas, the expeditions of Amerigo Vespucci, and the subsequent voyages of the Spaniards, taken from inedited manuscripts or reprinted from rare printed works; also many si … [Click Below for Full Description]

BURR, David H.
New York, 1829. Map. Copper plate engraving with original hand-coloring. Image measures 12 1/2 x 15". This map depicts Monroe County in northwestern New York, divided into 16 towns outlined in vivid color. The Genesee River runs vertically up the center of the map through the city of Rochester. The map denotes major routes, waterways, and topographical details, and icons label villages, flouring mills, factories, forges, saw mills, and churches. This first edition of Burr's county map appeared in his "Atlas of the State of New York" of the same year, which was the second atlas of an individual state ever published. The map is in good condition with light foxing throughout and some ink stains in the lower right margin, not affecting the image. Full original margins. David H. Burr (1803-1875) served as Topographer to the United States Post Office and Geographer to the House of Representatives and was widely known for his accuracy and attention to detail. His "Universal Atlas" was the first to map each of the United States individually. This map is a lovely rendering of a hard-to-find county in New York State. [Attributes: First Edition]

DONKIN, Rufane Shaw
London: J. Murray 1829 - First edition. 8vo., x, 195pp., PRESENTATION COPY with title inscribed: 'The Earl of Eldon from the Author'. 3 folding engraved maps. Original drab boards, neat repairs to extremities, a fine copy. After Mungo Park had shown that a large river (identified as the Niger of the ancients) flowed from west to east, various theories emerged to explain its course beyond Sansanding, where Park's report ended. One of the strangest theories came from Donkin who suggested that the Niger flowed into Lake Chad, then out of Lake Chad toward the north, disappearing under the desert in an underground stream that finally emerged in the Gulf of Sidra.
