LOUDON, J.C. (Edt.). - BLYTH, EDWARD. - [THE ORIGINATION OF SPECIES]
- London, Longman et al, 1829-36 [Blyth-papers: 1835 + 1836]. 8vo. All 9 volumes in the original brown half cloth bindings. All uncut and with the original printed paper title-labels to spines (including the prices). Volume 1 somewhat work, especially at capitals, and front board detached. All in all an excellent set in completely original, unrestored condition. [Blyth-papers: vol. VIII: pp. 40-53 + vol. IX: pp. 393-409 + pp. 505-514]. Scarce run of the nine volumes that make up the entire first run of the great 19th century natural history magazine, which went on to merge into Annals of Natural History, later Annals and Magazine of Natural History. There are numerous highly important entries and papers in this first run of the magazine, but most noteworthy is probably the first printing of Blyth's seminal first article (consisting in three parts) on the origination of species, predating Darwin's "Origin of Species" by more than 20 years. The work is not only considered an important prelude to Darwin's theory of natural selection, many scholars now think that Blyth's paper was in fact a main inspirational source for Darwin and claim that he deliberately took his main ideas from this, plagiarizing Blyth and not acknowledging the original source. "The leading tenets of Darwin's work . the struggle for existence, variation, natural selection and sexual selection . are all fully expressed in Blyth's paper of 1835". (Loren Eiseley, 1959). "Although he was one of the very early converts to Darwin's theory of natural selection, Blyth had long entertained ideas of his own on the sp … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mühlenpfordt, Eduard August Emil.
Süd Mexicanische Alterthümer - 25 sheets with wash-colour pen- and ink drawings and watercolours with details of structures, archeological remains and wall paintings in Mitla. Most of them are signed by E. A. E. Mühlenpfordt, some of them are dated 1829-1831-1834. Gilt title on front cover: ‚Süd Mexicanische Alterthümer'. Loosely contained in cont. green half-leather port folio, gilt title to front cover. Imperial- folio. Extremeties slightly worn. Spine rubbed. Provenance: Royal House of Hanover. These drawings are similar, but not identical with a set of 21 drawings „Atlas of the Zapotecan palaces of Mitla" which is part of the holdings of the Biblioteca Nacional de Antropologia e Historia, Mexico. Los Palacios de los Zapotecos en Mitla'. Eduard Seler (1849-1922) famous professor of Latin American studies in Berlin knew this set of drawings and spoke highly of it as one of the finest studies depicting archeological remains in Mitla he had ever seen. Our set on Whatman paper with water marks dating from 1836 to 1840. This set contains all the plates depicted in Penafiels „Monumentos del arte Mexicano antiguo" Volume II plates 212-227 some with variations and ten additional plates. A close comparison with the facsimile edition of 1984 reveals the following substantial differences: I. There are ten additional plates in our copy (numbers VI-XVA-XVI-XVII-XX-XXI-XXII-XXIII-XXIV-XV). II. Six plates have distinct differences in quality regarding subject, coulouring and the level of execution of various parts of the drawings (numbers III-IV-V-X-XI-XIV). III. The portfolio contains all the drawings of the facsimile, but some of them joined on one leaf (numbers VII-VIII-IX-XI-XIX). IV. Millswood, G.
G. Wood, Liverpool, 1829. Title continued: ".CAREFULLY SELECTED FROM EXPERIENCED AND APPROVED RECEIPTS FOR THE USE OF HOUSEKEEPERS IN GENERAL, A GREAT NUMBER OF WHICH WERE NEVER BEFORE PUBLISHED." Bound in contemporary full leather binding with gilt horizontal lines across the spine, along with two additional titles both in Welsh: "DRYCH YR AMSEROEDD" by Robert Jones, published in Llanrwst, Wales by Hugh Jones and "TRUGAREDD A BARN," also published by Hugh Jones in Llanrwst, Wales. (The first Welsh title is a description of the Methodist revival in Wales, has no date of publication but its preface is dated 1820; the second Welsh title shares the same publisher, a Welsh Anglican clergyman who was rector of Llanruwst so it too presumably has religious theme and appears contemporary to the first. Pagination for the three titles is 60+(xvi)+224+(vi)+144. Polished contemporary calf with some separation of the leather along the front joint although the front board is holding solidly; the leather itself is very well preserved and has only very minimal wear. The rear joint has separated along the bottom inch or so, is very solid otherwise. The corner of one front free end paper has been separated but is present, could be easily repaired. There is occasional foxing, particularly to the bottom of the first title page. Neat owner name on front free end paper. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall

LITOGRAFIA (-) CHARLET Nicolas Toussaint
Riuniti in 1 vol. in-f° piccolo oblungo ((26 x 34). [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary green half morocco gilt, all edges gilt. Fine, fresh copy of the first edition. 'A representation drawn from Nature of some of the most beautiful, hardy and rare Hebraceous Plants cultivated in the Flower Garden' (Dunthorne). Large, thick 8vo, 228 x 134 mms., pp. [ii], [iii] iv -xxvi, 766, [8 - adverts], folding engraved map as frontispiece, folding "Chronology of the Persian and Grecian History," uncut, many leaves unopened, original boards, linen spine, paper label; ex-library stamp on title-page, edges a bit soiled, but a very good copy, inscribed on top margin of recto of front free end-paper, "The editor of the Literary Gazette."Even though many leaves are unopened, someone last left the marginal injunction "omit" beside this passage on page 433: "If the kings do not make their appearance at the public supper, two choenices of barley-bread are sent home to each of them, with a small pint of wine:--if they are present, they have a double portion of all.
