The works were originally anonymously published and so became collectively known as 'Waverley', after his first novel. Sir Walter Scott
Edinburgh, Scotland: Ballantyne and Co, Edinburgh, 1829. Collectible Condition, COMPARE my clean tight bindings with no chipping, the pure pages without stain or discoloration, strikingly clear illustrations, and there is zero foxing. LOOK at other sets closely. This is the jewel of my collection. 190 years old and pages look new. A book plate of the original owner, Elisha Rhodes Brown, is on the inside cover of each volume. Progeny. Stored in a closed book cabinet for the last two decades that kept all sunlight out to protect the full polished calf leather. Books weren't opened in that time. Written by Sir Walter Scott under the name Waverley because he didn't think it manly for a knight to write romance fiction... This set is just shy of 200 years old and has been preserved by literature loving collectors who knew their responsibility to history. The title page says this set was printed for Robert Cadell, Edinburgh and Whittaker & Co LONDON. A page later "Printed by Ballantyne and Co, Paul's Work, Edinburgh. The photos are deceptive regarding size. These are roughly 6.5" high and 4.25" wide. Five linear feet of shelf space. I stored them on a 30 inch shelf with the back row elevated behind the front row. FIFTY volumes. A very reflective mirror like thick gold gilt is on all three edges, which is what keeps pages clean. At a modest 100 dollars a volume (you can't even bind them for that price) that would make 5,000 dollars more than fair, which is why I was happy to pay Brown and Bill of McNeil's Books in Charlotte their asking price of 3,500 dollars less my usual 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

BURY, Priscilla Susan Falkner (1799–1872).
R. Harrison's Esquire 16th April 1829. BURY, Priscilla Susan Falkner (1799–1872). Amaryllis Picta. R. Harrison's Esquire 16th April 1829. Fine original watercolour and gouache drawing (21 4/8 x 16 4/8 inches) of a Hippeastrum hybrid, commonly grown at Christmas, captioned and signed by the artist "Amaryllis Picta. R. Harrison's Esquire - 16th April 1829. [Drawn from na]ture by Priscilla Bury", with the number "9" in red wax crayon on the verso (left- and righthand edges with old folds, insect damage to the lower edge affecting the image of the bulb, some light toning and spotting). Provenance: Private Collection, Hertfordshire; with Cheffins, 9th March 2016, lot 480 Published as plate 5 in Bury's celebrated "A Selection of Hexandrian Plants": "From some mistake of labels it cannot be asserted positively whether the bulb was imported from Maranham, or raised from seed of Solandriflora, in the collection of R. Harrison Esq. where it flowered as here represented, in April, 1829. there is a strongly marked character of individuality in the whole appearance of the plant, and if not a distinct species, it is at least a very beautiful novelty as a variety". Bury grew up in Lancashire and drew plants "raised in the greenhouses of her family home, Fairfield (demolished 1913), 2 miles east of Liverpool and, by 1829, had enough studies of lilies and allied plants for publication, a venture promoted by her friend, William Swainson. Richardson, John, Charles Wilkins, & Francis Johnson
London printed by J. L. Cox, 1829. New, enlarged edition. One volume bound in three, folio (31 x 25.5 cm), pp.9, [1, blank], lxxxvi, 1-530; 531-1156; 1157-1714, [2, errata]. A sound set, suitable for rebinding. A little spotting and a handful of marginal stains to text. Bound in 19th-century half morocco over cloth. Spine leather perished and flaking. Discreet stamps of the East India College, Herts. The last significant edition of a landmark in the British study of Arabic and Persian, which was first issued in an abridged edition in 1777 and 1780 by the Scottish orientalist John Richardson (1740-1795). Charles Wilkins published a new edition in 1806, adding some 20,000 words; Francis Johnson, in revising the text for this edition, had to restrain his impulse to further addition, as the dictionary's size ballooned. This dictionary's sheer scope made it an invaluable resource for students of Arabic and Persian throughout the 19th century, and it remained in print well into the 20th century.

Carlsruhe, 23. His journeys included trips to North Africa, the Horn of Africa, West Africa and Eastern Europe in the West, and to the Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and China. - The account known as the Rihla, is esteemed for its lively descriptions of his travels, giving notable information on the history, geography and botany of the countries and cities Ibn Batuta visited. He describes, for example, the city of Aden as follows: "From this place I went to the city of Aden, which is situated on the sea-shore. This is a large city, but without either seed, water, or tree. Krug, Wilhelm Traugott, Philosoph (1770-1842).
Leipzig, 21. II, 1829. 1 S. 4to. Mit eh. Adresse verso (Faltbrief). - Papiergedecktes Siegel. [Description de l'Égypte]
Paris, C. L. F. Panckoucke, 1820, 1829. A total of 36 vols.: 26 text vols. (4to) and 10 atlas vols. (elephant folio). With coloured frontispiece and 899 engraved plates and maps, many double-page-sized and folded. Slightly later English half calf, professionally repaired in places. Second edition of this monumental work (the first was published from 1809 onwards), the first comprehensive description of ancient and modern Egypt. Commissioned by Napoleon during his Egyptian campaign between 1798 and 1801, this encompassing historical, archaeological, art-historical, and natural-historical account of the country was realised through the efforts of the Institut d'Egypte in Cairo. Its influence was enormous, establishing Egyptology as an intellectual discipline and nurturing a passion for Egyptian art throughout the Western World. Edited by some of the leading intellectual figures in France, the Description also includes contributions from celebrated artists such as Jacques Barraband, Pierre-Joseph Redouté, Geoffrey Saint-Hilaire, Jules-César Savigny and others. More than 150 scholars and scientists and some 2000 artists, designers and engravers were involved in its preparation. The success of the publication was such that work on the second edition (known as the "Pancoucke edition") began before the first was completed. The text was expanded into a greater number of volumes, now printed in a smaller format; new pulls were taken from the plates, and these were bound with many of the large-format plates folded into the new, reduced dimensions. - A splendid, clean copy, complete w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nevertheless I expect to keep my word and take a chance Wednesday in the role of Zerlina [in Mozart's Don Giovanni] for our good [Carlo] Zucchelli. Saturday I will play Rosina [in Rossini's La Barbiere di Siviglia] if you do not object to this opera, which is the least tiring of all my roles and which will put me at least risk of a relapse. Please therefore put in all the newspapers that my performance will take place Sunday, because if you don't plan to announce it until Wednesday evening there will not be enough time to inform the public about it. Mr. [Charles] de Bériot is kindly taking charge of the letter I have addressed to Mr. [Louis] Véron. You will have the reply as soon as it is written to me." Paris: 1829. London, Printed by J. L. Cox, 1829. Large 4to. Mid 20th-century half-calf over cloth covered boards, spine with gilt raised bands and red morocco lettering-piece, signed by the binder on rear tun-ins; pp. [3]-9, lxxxvi, 1714, [2, Corrections and Additions], half-title discarded a long time ago (offsetting from title to old initial blank); spine a little sunned; internally, apart from the occasional very light spotting and toning a very good and clean copy; weight just under 6 kilos. Published as late as 1892 (edited by Francis Joseph Steingass; sixth impression 1977, published in Beirut in 1970 and reprinted 100 years after Steingass' edition in New Delhi), this impressive and very rare trilingual dictionary-cum-cultural reference work was issued for the employees of the East India company (dedicated to the Honourable Court of Directors), published first from 1777 to 1780, in two volumes by the Clarendon Press in Oxford. John Richardson (1740/41-1795) was an ambitious and talented Scottish orientalist. 'With the growth of British territorial power in India the potential market for a Persian dictionary had aroused the interest of London publishers and by 1770 Jones and Richardson were working on a new version of Franciscus Meninski's Thesaurus linguarum orientalium, first published in 1680-87. Progress was very slow, and Jones withdrew to concentrate on his legal career, leaving the field to Richardson. Thanks to his "ingenuity and perseverance" (memorial of A. Hamilton and G. The author gathered information on the names and usage of Greek vases during his travels in Italy in 1823 and 1829. In Naples he made extensive notes on the vases in the local museum. This work is perhaps the first to treat Greek vases systematically. Brunet states 1830 as the publishing date. Very rare. There are no copies on the internet, and no auction records in the last 50 years, perhaps longer. Scattered spotting to the boards and text leaves, the plates hardly affected at all. A very good copy. Brunet, 29618. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Click Below for Full Description]
