History of the United States, or Republic of America: Exhibited in Connexion with its Chronology and Progressive Geography by Means of a Series of Maps... Designed for Schools and Private Libraries

New-York: White, Gallaher, & White. 1829. First. Second edition, revised and corrected. Tall octavo. 424, xliv pp. Publisher's legal sheep with morocco spine label gilt. Wear at the crown and extremities, some modest foxing in the text, but a tight and sound, pleasing very good copy. Inscribed by Emma Willard: "To Mr. Alexander from his friend The Author," followed by a contemporary re-gifting inscription: "Asa G. Alexander from his affect'e Uncle, Fr. Alexander. Oct. 11th, 1831" (our research indicates Asa G. Alexander of Killingly, Connecticut was either attending or was soon to attend Yale at the time of the inscription from his uncle, i.e. he is listed in the 1832 catalog of students; further evidence indicates he later became a teacher). Also contains an attractive later bookplate and pencil ownership signature, all neat and not distracting from the author's inscription.Emma Willard was an educational reformer who opened the Troy Female Seminary in 1814 which was the first school in the United States to offer higher education to women, and which survives to this day as the Emma Willard School. The school has graduated a great number of distinguished women including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lily Spencer-Churchill (Duchess of Marlborough), Jane Fonda, and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. Willard also wrote several textbooks and books on history and geography, most notably this title, History of the United States, or Republic of America, (1828). She was a strong advocate of science education for women. An early work by a woman that helped pave the way for higher education for American women. According to Margaret Rossiter: "'Willard, her school, and others like it provided the essential starting point for women in science and the professions" (M.B. Ogilvie, Women in Science pp. 19-20). Reprinted over several decades, this early edition is particularly scarce, and the earliest Inscribed book by Willard we've seen. .

Narrative and Successful Result of a Voyage in the South Seas, performed by order of the Government of British India, to ascertain the actual fate of La Perouse's Expedition, interspersed with accounts of the religion, manners, customs and cannibal practices of the South Sea Islanders.4504313

London: Hurst, Chance, and Co, 1829. In fine condition.. Two volumes, octavo, with two folding lithographs (one coloured), plate of a canoe, and a folding map of Mannicolo; bound without the half-titles in contemporary polished calf gilt, continental coat-of-arms in blind at centre of each cover. First edition: a very fine presentation copy in a handsome binding, inscribed "From the Author", with an unknown early owner's armorial stamps on the bindings, and later in the libraries of W.R. Griffiths and Rodney Davidson (sale 7 March 2005, lot 107), with bookplates. Forty years after the disappearance of La Pérouse, Peter Dillon, a sandalwood trader, called at the Solomons, and when a silver sword guard was brought out, suspected he had stumbled on the solution to the mystery of the great French voyage's disappearance. He returned to India, persuaded the government of Bengal to sponsor an expedition and sailed to the Solomons via Tasmania, New Zealand and Tonga. At Vanikoro, he conducted a careful investigation among the natives regarding the shipwrecks, and was able to obtain many relics including a portion of the stern of the Boussole, ships' bells stamped "Bazin m'a fait" monogrammed silver, metal fragments and mill stones known to have been aboard. One native (depicted on a folding plate) had a glass piece from a thermometer in his nose. On the successful receipt of his report and this material in France, Dillon was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, his expenses defrayed and granted a pension.Dillon, described as "eccentric, quick of temper and with a vivid vocabulary" (Dunmore), includes a scathing examination of the legal system of Tasmania and New South Wales. Aboard ship had been a Dr. Robert Tytler with whom relations were so strained that Dillon was accused of insanity, the doctor in turn arrested for attempts to incite mutiny, and upon arrival at Hobartown, assault charges were placed against Dillon and the ship sequestered. Over 40 pages relate to the questionable legal proceedings between judge and governor, and the appendix reprints articles from Australian and Indian sources on Dillon's treatment in what he called a "land of corruption and injustice".

The Practical Gardener. Volume I & II.

Thomas Kelly. London. 1829-1830. - VOLUME I AND VOLUME II FROM DIFFERENT EDITIONS: Volume I with a title page copyright 1830 (in addition to pictorial title page dated 1828); volume II title page is copyright 1829. BINDING OF VOLUMES DOES NOT MATCH. VOLUME I: Hard back volume, 8.25 x 5.5 inches, leather binding, xxviii+554pp, with pagination beginning with the Preface (iii thru viii) and a brief history of gardening (ix thru xxviii). The boards are scuffed and mottled with one plum-sized stain. 3.5 inch vertical crack (repaired) to front joint. The spine itself is dry and cracked and bumped at top and bottom. The bulk of the book (pp 1 thru 554) gives focus to the Culinary (or Kitchen) Garden and to the Fruit Garden. The volume contains a feebly imagined engraved frontispiece (tears and stains in margins of free edges) and four beautifully hand-colored plates depicting fruit: strawberry, pineapple, pear and apple (three dated 1828; one 1829). These plates suffer modest toning, light soiling and a light dampstain (.25 inch at deepest point) across the top margin, a condition also affecting, less detrimentally, the text portion of the Fruit Garden. The text remains tightly bound, save for a single loose page in the Fruit Garden section. VOLUME II: Hard back volume, 8.5 x 5.5 inches, half-leather binding, with pagination beginning at p. 555 and ending on index p. 1120. A 142 pp. Supplement follows the primary text; it is in two parts: "The Stove" and "Nursery and Planting." The last page provides Directions to the Binder and, on verso, an advert for "a new and elegant work" by McIntosh entitled "Flora and Pomona." The volume contains twenty-three full page plates, ten beautifully hand-colored depicting flowering plants. A black and white plate entitled Late Forcing Pit has suffered a vertical tear; only half the plate remains. The placement of plates appears to match the instructions to the binder appearing at the rear of the book. The volume is missing the front free end paper; previous owner's address on the blank page preceding the title page. One inch split to top of front joint. The index and final page at rear have separated from the text block and are held in place by the rear free end paper, resulting in wear to the fore-edge of these sheets. Scattered light foxing to the text block and black and white plates, the color plates are in very good condition: clean and bright. This was an extremely popular work which was published in several editions over a matter of just a few years, as the rage for gardening spread among the expanding British middleclass. VOLUME I: The complete information on the title page reads: "The Practical Gardener, and Modern Horticulturist; containing the latest and most approved methods for the management of the kitchen, fruit and flower garden, the green house, hot house etc. etc. for every month in the year; each department being distinctly and separately arranged; illustrated by numerous designs of the most eligible plans for the formation of Kitchen and Pleasure Gardens, the erection of hot houses, hot beds, green houses, conservatories, walls, fences, etc. etc. including the New Method of Heating Forcing-Houses with Hot Water Only; forming a complete system of modern practice, in the various branches of Horticultural Science. Embellished with highly finished engravings of some of the most choice and valuable fruits and flowers now cultivated in this country. By Charles McIntosh CMCHS Late Gardener to the Right Honorable the Earl of Braedalbane, and Sir Thomas Baring," etc. The first chapter is a brief history entitled "The Rise and Progress of Gardening"; subsequent sections are entitled "The Culinary Garden" and "The Fruit Garden," both of which are organized by the months of the year, beginning in January, with a discussion of gardening activities appropriate to the season and the specific vegetable or fruit. The final chapter consists of "The Forcing Garden" (or Hot House Garden) The four color plates are most attractive, wit [Attributes: Hard Cover]

London: John Hatchard & Son, 1829. First edition, [4], iv, 172pp., (2 leaves of publishers adverts at the beginning), orig. boards with printed title label, spine chipped and worn, uncut.         Mémoires du Duc de Rovigo, pour servir à l'histoire de l'Empereur Napoléon

      - Paris, Bossange 1829. 8 volumes in-12 reliés demi chagrin chocolat. Bel ensemble, complet. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Alterthümer Lief- Ehst- und Kurlands.

Riga 1829 - contemporary marbled boards with cover-lable on front. 8to. (16 x 10,5 cm) Manuscript with 72 (including 5 colored) original drawings of castles, ruins and places in Latvia, Livonia and Estonia, as well as some tombs of slavonic bishopfs and rulers. 6 of the drawings are signed by "A. Merkel", who most probably is Adolf Merkel, the son of Garlieb Helwig Merkel (1769-1850), who was a Baltic German writer, activist and an early Estophile and Lettophile. The manuscript bears the subdivision "Erste Abtheilung" (First Part), so probably more parts were planned, but due to the early death of Adolf Merkel in the year 1830 were never been finished. The drawings were mostly reproduced after older sources like the drawings by Augustin von Mayerberg, whose 17th century drawings were first published as engravings just two years before in 1827. Merkel stated the original date of the image on most of his drawings, so he mentioned the years 1661-1662 on the plates which were drawn after Mayerberg, but there are many other dates: 1634, 1775, 1788, 1790, 1792, 1793, 1794, 1797, 1799, 1800, 1805, 1817, 1820, 1821, 1826, 1827, 1829. The last 6 drawings are dated 1829 and are all signed by Merkel and are most probably drawn on-site. Most likely Adolf Merkel used the library of his father Garlieb for his sources and it also can be assumed, that not all drawings were reproduced after printed soures but after drawings and sketch-books of his father Garlieb Merkel as well. The plates are numbered 1-74, 2 plates were removed (both have shown the castle Kreutzburg (Kryžbarkas) nowadays Russia) - The manuscript includes drawings of the following castles and towns: Schloss Wenden (8 drawings with different datings), Kokenhusen (7 drawings), Schloss Segewold, Schloss Ronneburg, Schloss Freiden, Schloss Fellin (2 drawings), Schloss Doblen (2), Schloss Oberpalen, Schloss Marienhausen, Schloss Tolsburg, Schloss Borckholm, Schloss Smilten, Schloss Ringen, Schloss Tarwast, Burg Ermes (2), Schloss Karnus, Schlossturm zu Kida, Abtei Padis, Schloss Weissenstein, Schloss Warte zu Weissenstein, Schlosskirche zu Weissenstein, Schloss Wesenberg (2), Schloss Erla, Schloss Lemfal, Schloss Helmet, Reval, Schloss Pebalg, Schloss Ascheraden, Schloss Etz, Schloss Bauske (2), Trikaten (Trikata), Schloss Ludzen, Schloss Candau, Burg Lais, Schloss Burtnek (2), Schloss Neuhausen (2), Schloss Marienburg (2), Schloss Adsel, Schloss Tuckum, Schloss Lennewaden (2), Schloss Selburg, Schloss Ascheraden (2). -- condition: binding some rubbed, the last two leaves with browned spot at upper margin (also with little marginal loss to the last drawing-plate) -- A very rare pictorial latvian manuscript with very interesting origin.         A Plan of Hastings Harbour, in the Mergui Archipelago, and the Adjacent Islands, by Capt. Danl. Ross, F.R.S. Marine Surveyor General 1828.

James Horsburgh, Nov 2nd 1829, London: - A rare map of islands in the Andaman Sea, Burma, surveyed by Daniel Ross, known as the "Father of the Indian Surveys." Captain Ross was engaged in surveying the coast of China from 1806-1820. His highly accurate & trigonometrical charts were published as they were completed, and the whole were incorporated into Horsburgh's general charts. In 1823, he became the Marine Surveyor General. Clements Markham, in "A Memoir on the Indian Surveys" (1871) stated that "During the Burmese War from 1823 to 1826 the useful operations under his superintendency were interrupted." and despite a "fit of ruinous economy" in 1828, Ross resumed his good work and in 1830, again had two brigs (surveying) in the Mergui Archipelago. The map was surveyed on the heels of the First Burmese War, perhaps with thoughts of being prepared for another war, and another, which fortunately did not start again until the 1850s. The map shows the islands Hasting's, St. Matthew's and St. Luke's, now named Hastings, Zadetkalay and Zadetkyi. Other islands include Pine Tree, Russell's, Three Hill, Phipp's, Barwell's and Horse Shoe Island, mostly appearing as Kawthaung on Google maps. Sea chart backed on linen and edged in blue silk. Some spotting in the lower right corner (water) but otherwise remarkable clean and fresh, including the silk ties. "Engraved by Richard Bateman" beneath the title. The British Library holds a copy ( BLL01004857047) but not noted on OCLC.
