Annals and Antiquities of Rajast’han, or the Central and Western Rajpoot States of India

London: published by Smith, Elder, & Co. and Calkin & Budd, 1829-1832. 2 volumes, quarto. (12 3/8 x 9 7/8 inches). 3 letterpress tables (2 folding). 50 plates, plans and maps by Edward Finden and others after Captain Waugh, Ghafasi and others (including: 1 folding engraved map, hand- coloured in outline, 28 engraved plates after Waugh [1 folding], 11 engraved plates after Ghafasi, 3 lithographs [1 folding, 2 drawn on stone by Louis Haghe and on india paper mounted]). Later half calf over marbled paper boards, spine with raised bands in six compartments, red and black morocco lettering pieces in the second and fourth compartments, t.e.g. First edition of this valuable early study of the history, beliefs and topography of Rajasthan in north west India. The author went to India as a cadet in the Bengal army of the British East India Company in 1799. He commanded the escort attached to the Resident at Sindhia from 1812 to 1817. In the latter year he was in charge of the Intelligence Department which largely contributed to the break up of the Maratha Confederacy in the Third Anglo-Maratha War, and was of great assistance in the campaign in Rajputana. In 1818 he was appointed political agent for the states of western Rajputana, where he successfully acted as an aribitrator between rival chieftains, settling their feuds. While Resident in Rajputana, Tod collected materials for his Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan, a work of great importance for South Asian scholars. At the dawn of the archaeological and historical study of India, Tod presents the contemporary geography and a detailed history of Rajputana along with the history of the Rajput clans who ruled most of the area at that time. Tod's work drew on local archives, Rajput traditional sources, and monuments such as the Edicts of Asoka found at Junagadh. He returned to England in 1823 with a wealth of material for what became a fundamental study of Rajast'han's historical development. The work is ornamented with a fine series of plates, the majority of which are from drawings either by a local artist whose name is given as Ghafsi, or Captain Waugh, a friend and kinsman of the author who died just before the work was published. The work was much appreciated in the region at the time, to the extent that the ruler of Udaipur renamed a village in Tod's honour: Barsawada became "Todgarh" (or Tods fort) - a name that it still bears today.

New York & Philadelphia: Collins & Co/Harrison Hall, 1829. Hardcover. Folio (11-1/2" x 14-1/2") bound in contemporary half brown leather with leather corners, though the spine is lacking and both covers are detached. The atlas volume only consisting of a title page and 76 beautiful hand-colored plates, mostly multi-image. Wood (p. 360) notes that "the hand-colored drawings in the atlas are from the original copper plates, colored anew by pigments which seem to have been of better quality than those used by Wilson" in the first edition published 15 - 20 years earlier. A superb American production. Along with Audubon it is one of the color plate masterpieces of the 19th century, but significantly less expensive to obtain though becoming very difficult to locate. Colors still bright, occasional and light spot of foxing or small stain, but generally quite clean with most tissue guards still present. Minor edge tear on one or two plates not extending into image; a few plates detached. Both endpapers and blanks wrinkled to varying degrees.

I, Avertissement, p. VII). FIRST EDITION. VERY NICE COPY. COMPLETE. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Tome I-IV (instead of 5). Paris, Méquignon-Marvis, 1829-1834. 4 volumes. 8vo (230 x 150mm). pp. xiv, 400; 407, (1); 326; 486, with 223 handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary red half calf, gilt lettered spines (some hinges a bit weak). First edition. The stock of the first 2 volumes was destroyed by fire and both volumes were reprinted in 1837. The last volume 5, which is mostly lacking and not present in our set was written by Ch. Aubé and must have been issued in a small number. P.F. Dejean was called 'the first great coleopterist'. Together with Boisduval, who was his private curator, he published the above work on European coleoptera. "The great name in coleopterology during the early nineteenth century was P.F.M.A. Dejean (1780-1845), with a career quite exceptional among entomologists; a general who rose to the title "pair de France" and served as Napoleon's first aide-de-champ in the battle of Waterloo. Dejean was an ardent collector and eventually in part by purchase, brought together the largest private insect collection of his time. He lost no opportunity to fetch rare specimens, which is amply evident from what was told about his somewhat unmilitary behaviour during raging war" (R.F. Smith a.o. History of Entomology pp. 125-6). Dejean added insects to his collection from the fields of Waterloo. His collection numbered 22,399 species in 1837. Some foxing as usual. Horn & Schenkling 4602; Nissen ZBI, 1062

The Fishes of Cochin, illustrating Day's 'Fishes of Malabar' to which are appended some Fishes of Trichinopoly, Madura, &c Autographs of some of the Indian Ichthyologist, 1865.

Manuscript album containing, apart from the handwritten title, 102 original watercolours and 30 original pen drawings, mounted on 111 leaves (308 x 240mm), with some engravings, a leaf of photographs, and some original correspondence; in a contemporary binding of half red calf, spine skilfully repaired, lettered: "Illustrations of Indian Fishes, Day". A unique and splendid collection of watercolours and drawings of Indian fishes, some by the great ichthyologist Francis Day himself and others commissioned from a group of Indian artists, assembled as an album for his own use by Day. The collection comprises 30 original pen drawings, evidently the work of Francis Day, as well as a wonderful suite of 102 original watercolours by Indian artists. These watercolours and drawings are accompanied by a number of engravings extracted from Day's published work as well as a leaf of photographs and, at the end, a series of letters from other ichthyologists. On the flyleaf of the album is a superb small watercolour of an Indian river landscape with bridge. Francis Day (1829-1889), the most important ichthyologist ever to have written on Indian fishes, published several major works on the ichthyology of India. His first work was 'The Fishes of Malabar' published in 1865; it was followed in 1878 by 'The Fishes of India', while a further two volumes on fishes appeared in the 'Fauna of British India' in 1889. While two watercolours in the first section of the manuscript can be identified as the likely originals for plates 3 and 8 in Day's 'Fishes of Malabar', the remainder appear to have remained entirely unpublished. The album is a first portrayal of the fish fauna of the Malabar Coast. The Malabar Coast refers to India's southwest coast and is flanked by the Arabian Sea at the west. Many of the fishes of the Malabar Coast also inhabit the Arabian Sea and are hence found on the coastal waters of the Arabian Peninsula. "In 1852 Day joined the Madras medical service as surgeon, and began a career in the southern region of the Indian sub-continent. The years Day spent at Cochin on the Malabar Coast gave a unique opportunity for the study of its fish to which he added an interest in the problems of fisheries and food supply. In 1864 Day returned home on leave with sufficient material for a paper on the 'Fishes of Cochin' for the Zoological Society and for a larger work that came to be published under the title of 'The Fishes of Malabar'" (1865) (Gunther, A.E. A Century of Zoology at the British Museum?, p. 409). Day returned to India in 1866 and remained there until 1874. "Even today, Dr. Francis Day is considered to be the single most influential figure in the ichthyology of southern Asia. In 24 years of study he named 343 species of marine and freshwater fishes, based primarily on nearly 10,000 specimens from an area that today extends from Afghanistan to Burma?" (Australian Museum's website). The subject of the first part of this remarkable album is the 'Fishes of Malabar': this part contains 36 original watercolours and 25 pen drawings, on 41 leaves, mostly mounted 2 to a page. The second part of the album has its own title-page: "Drawings of some of the Fishes of Trichinopoly, Madura &c made by Native Artists under the superintendence of Assistant Surgeon Morgan M.D. Madras Medical service in 1863?". The 66 watercolours in this part, all mounted one to a page, are clearly the work of Indian artists, and some have Sanskrit inscriptions. Most illustrations are also captioned with the Latin scientific names. This part also contains 5 pen drawings and a page of old photographs as well as a number of letters to Day from contemporary scientists such as D. Horsfield, Emmerson Tennent, J.E. Gray, J. Couch, and P. Bleeker, as well as one from the London bookseller Bernard Quaritch. The pen drawings in both sections are similar in style and can be identified as the work of Francis Day himself. One is inscribed 'F. Day del ad nat et sculp. Madras 1864'. In the original publication of the 'Fishes of Malabar' all 20 plates were both drawn and engraved by Day, who must have been a very able draftsman. In the preface to that book he explained that "? having through the kindness of Colonel Sir Henry James, R.E. been shown the mode of engraving on copper pursued at the Ordnance Office, I have been induced to personally delineate most of the new species described in this work?". He also points out that very little is known about the ichthyology of the region, "..?so little has since been done in inquiring into its natural riches, that the national Collection in London appears to have obtained one solitary ichthyological species from the whole of that territory in the course of seventy years?". As we know, Day set out to correct that neglect, and this splendid collection is evidence of his working methods: it is an important and remarkably attractive album, in excellent condition. Provenance: Francis Day (with his label "Francis Day, Esq. Cumberland House, St. Thomas's Street, Ryde, Island of Wight" on front pastedown, and his signature on flyleaf).

Script is. slightly faded but legible in all volumes. Library discard stamp on. versos of covers of Vols. A and 8 and on ffep of Vol. 4. Overall, a. Good set.. When Jean Bernadotte was crowned Charles XIV King of Sweden and Norway in 1818 he began to introduce the ecomomic policies that would revitalize the country and move it towards industrialization. His government encouraged free enterprise and industrialized manufacturing, which soon helped to establish Sweden as a more powerful trade partner for major European countries and especially Great Britain. Sweden already had a complicated customs system in place that charged major levies on foreign trade. Charles XIV improved and promoted the tariff system, soon paid off all foreign debt, increased the national revenue, and greatly enriched his government. His next step was to develop a policy of peace abroad and beneficial diplomatic relations with SwedenÕs trade partners. Benjamin Bloomfield, 1st Baron Bloomfield, was EnglandÕs answer to blunt the edge of SwedenÕs aggressive customs policies. Named by his friend and confidant the Prince Regent as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Court of Bernadotte, Lord Bloomfield arrived in Stockholm in 1823. He apparently used these notebooks as a reference, as he and his legation took steps to influence the customs process to EnglandÕs advantage. As he took up his official duties in Stockholm, Lord Bloomfield encountered a wilderness of commercial negotiations that interrupted and particularly discouraged the trade of British manufactured goods for SwedenÕs valued bar iron, Baltic timber and oats. Fortunately, King Charles XIV appreciated the manners and conversation of a foreign minister who had spent the best part of his life at the center of a brilliant court. In no time, Lord BloomfieldÕs work seemed to consist chiefly of feasting, dancing and drinking champagne. He and Bernadotte became friends, cementing the harmony of the two nations, and as Lord Bloomfield hinted at the justice of rescinding the harder regulations, he began to establish a freer and more favorable importation system. The delighted King George IV noted that Lord BloomfieldÕs patriotism was unbounded. George Canning, the brilliant politician and orator, was BritainÕs head of the Foreign Office at the time of Lord BloomfieldÕs mission to Sweden. Lord BloomfieldÕs dispatches of which these notebooks were a part, were directed and addressed to him and his officers, and it was his liberal polices that Lord Bloomfield carried out. Most volumes contain columns of individual commodities and their tariffs printed in Swedish, with the same commodities, amounts traded in import and export, and their costs handwritten in English translation on opposite pages. The ordinances and proclamations are handwritten in English. There are no official court seals, but spaces are left for them. Although at this time the Swedish government was working toward a declaration against slave trafficking, the slave trade was still flourishing in the Caribbean. King George, Lord Canning and Lord Bloomfield were determined to create an alliance between their countries for the suppression of the slave trade. These lists do not mention slaves as a commodity, but laid in to the volume lettered A is a proclamation regulating slave trading in Saint-Barthelemy, a Swedish-owned island with a thriving duty-free port. The listed commodities vary from volume to volume and reveal the vast quantity of goods in almost all cases traveling between countries by ship: a single page from one notebook includes tariffs for arrack, brandy, coffee, glass, rum, wood (spars, staves), woven goods, ribbons of silk and velvet, cinnamon, cardamom, currants, fennel seeds, almonds, vanilla, liquorice, ginger, cloves, pepper, porcelain, tea, oranges, agates, alabaster, feathers, tiles and bricks, furs and hides, cannon, and gun stocks. Contents of Notebooks by Volume: No.2: On Exports of Sweden to Foreign Parts Published the 17 of April 1799 and continued in force to the year 1816. No. 3:.On Imports of Sweden from Foreign Parts Ð published the 20 March 1816 and continued in force to the year 1824. See Hillier, volume 2, pp. 768-70, in which he describes Chinnen's SONAN GAFU & this volume, the AZUMA NO TEBURI, as being "among the best known and most admired of all Japanese books". The 25 double page color prints of genre scenes in Edo done in Chinnen's inimitable Shijo style are very well printed. The colors are excellent and are those of an early printing. This is a very handsome book and an important cornerstone item for any ehon collection - Chinnen only produced two major works of book illustration, this and the iconic SONAN GAFU. Complete.

- Centro Naz.
