Samling af 50 smaae Landkort I Træsnit til Brug for Skolerne paa Landet . [Collection of 50 small maps in woodcut for the use of the schools in the country]

S.E. Holm, [Denmark] 1829 - Small quarto, with 50 leaves of wood-engraved maps, handcoloured in outline; a very good copy in contemporary half calf, some wear to boards and extremities, slight worming at top of gutter barely affecting some of the plates, and some inoffensive early manuscript annotations. Charming world atlas for school children. A very rare Danish atlas for schools, the first such work published, with a wonderful double-page world map, and another plate depicting Australia and the Pacific. This simple but charming work was published by a Danish school teacher called Søren Eliasen Holm, who himself paid for the printing and publishing of the atlas. His main purpose was to give poor village children an idea about geography, and it was much republished in newer, often improved, editions. Not much is known about the enigmatic Holm, although the extraordinary and disturbing fact is recorded that he was banned from the education system in 1814 after he castrated himself to avoid having more children. As would be expected, many of the maps are devoted to Scandinavia and Europe, including 28 of various regions of Denmark and the Danish Islands. The atlas does include several attractive plates of the rest of the world: apart from the Australian map, there are also maps of individual European countries including Great Britain, France, and Turkey, as well as the continent of Africa, and the Americas (this last bound in upside down). Most of the maps are signed by Holm, and dated from 1818 to 1826; the Australian map is dated 1823. The atlas was released in numerous edition between 1819 and at least 1840, with the online catalogues of Det Kongelige Bibliotek recording a series of copies. The work is not, however, well known outside Denmark, with OCLC unable to list any copies of any edition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

JOURNAL OF A PASSAGE FROM THE PACIFIC TO THE ATLANTIC, Crossing the Andes in the Northern Provinces of Peru, and Descending the River Mara?on, or Amazon.

John Murray,, London: 1829 - 486 pp. First edition; 3/4, black polished calf; marble boards; red morocco label, gilt stamped, affixed to spine; fold-out map; numberous charts throughout. [vii]-xv; [1]-486. Binding tight; boards edges rubbed; corners lightly bumped; internally pristine; see additional image provided. Maw, a Royal Navy Officer, began his journey in the Andes and navigated almost the full length of the Amazon river where he made detailed soundings of its depth. Little description of natural history or surroundings. Borba 541. Quoting the Preface: "Having crossed the Continent of South America, from the shores of the Pacific to the Atlantic, by a route little known; having descended the Mara?on, the largest river of the world, for about three thousand miles; and, having been seized as a prisoner by the MIlitary Commandant of a district in Brazil, it became my duty, on my arrival in England, to report what had occurred at the Admiralty. I did so; mentioning at the same time, that I had some rough notes of a Journal; these notes I was directed to arrange, and sent in. ?Whilst occupied in preparing my Journal for the Admiralty, some friends recommended my publishing; and feeling that, however deficient I may be in the qualifications necessary to become a good author, it is possible my Journal may contain some information that may be of service to the public,--and, perhaps, tend to the improvement of the countries and the wretched people amongst whom I passe[d].         Autograph letter to John Wilson Croker with anecdotes of King George III, 1829

      - Two fine anecdotes of Kings George III and IV recorded by Princess Augusta and reported to John Wilson Croker by her Bedchamber Woman - autograph letter signed ("S.W") from Sophia Wynyard to Croker enclosed within her copy of her mistress's "memoranda": 2pp. 8vo, [no place given], 17 May [1829], within 3pp. 4to, [n.p.], [17 May 1829]. The outer sheet slightly torn, with small loss (not of text) at seal; addressed "/Private/ The Right Honble John Wilson Croker Admiralty". "The late King having heard of Mr Fox's death [Charles James Fox, 1749-1806] expressed his regret on that account to The King when they met at dinner - His Majesty immediately replied; I am truly sorry[.] Mr Fox's conduct to me during the last eight months, has certainly obliterated from my memory the misery he occasioned me for 23 years." Princess Augusta "sometimes made memm of any thing that struck her particularly", reports the writer to John Wilson Croker (1780-1857), Secretary to the Admiralty since 1809 but a consummate contemporary historian, "and has allowed me to copy two of them for you upon condition that you do not name the having received them from her" - otherwise "it might get her into a scrape". Her second anecdote relates to Edmund Burke (1729-1797). "When King George the 3d and Queen Charlotte heard of the death of young Mr Burke [Richard Burke, 1758-1794, son of Edmund], they desired Mr de Luc [Jean-André Deluc, 1727-1817] to write and enquire in their names after his afflicted friends. The next summer Mr and Mrs Burke came to visit Mr de Luc at Windsor from Beaconsfield and when walking on the South Terrace, they were met by The King and Queen . . ." Burke expressed his gratitude for their "benevolent recollections" of him and his wife in their grief - "I prayed God to bless you and The Queen for it, and I repeat it again now, may God bless you both" - and the King replied, "I know how to feel for you having lost two dear boys, but yours was the heaviest blow, for in your Son you lost a friend also." "Then," records Princess Augusta, "His Majesty added[,] I have read your Pamphlet on the French Revolution, it does great credit to your Heart and Head, and I shall read it again and again with delight." Princess Augusta Sophia (1768-1840) was the sixth child and second daughter of King George III (1738-1820), and a younger sister of George IV (1762-1830). Sophia or Sophy Wynyard (1774-1844), daughter of Lt-Gen William Wynyard, one of George III's equerries, served as Bedchamber Woman to Princess Augusta until her death; in 1841 she was granted a Civil List pension of £200 p.a. - "In consideration of the long and faithful service rendered by her to the Royal Family, as well as her impoverished circumstances"; she died at Kensington Palace three years later.

        Sir Thomas Moore

London - John Murray, 1829. London - John Murray, 1829 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. The first edition of this political and social commentary from poet laureate Robert Southey. His Colloquies of Society (1829) is a calm exposition of his mature social and political convictions: rejection of the Catholic claims and of constitutional reform, support for high taxation to redistribute wealth, and so on. The conversations are conducted with the ghost of Sir Thomas More, whose Utopia was a remote ancestor of pantisocracy. They are set in the neighbourhood of Keswick, and the beauty of the countryside tempers the generally gloomy tone of the conversation, as does the quiet of his splendid library (DNB) Including frontispieces to each volume and five other plates, collated complete. With circulating library subscriber's list and rules to front pastedown of volume I. Complete in two volumes. Condition: In cloth bindings with original spine labels. Externally rubbed, with marks to the boards and wear to the spines. Corners bumped. Ink to spines. Internally, binding tender with some pages detached. Front hinge of volume I has failed, and front hinge of volume II is tender. Pages are bright, with some scattered spotting (heavier to first and last few pages). Overall: FAIR..
