Etwas stockfleckig. / Original edition in plain editors - brochure. Uncut/Unopened. Slightly foxed. RARE. August Wilhelm Hefter (auch: Heffter; * 30. April 1796 in Schweinitz; † 5. [Click Below for Full Description]

VANDERMAELEN, Phillippe Marie
Brussels: Vandermaelen, Phillipe Marie, 1827. unbound. Map. Large format lithograph with original hand color wash. Image measures 18.25 x 20.75". Sheet measures 21.25 x 27.5" This scarce map of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick is one of the most detailed maps of the region published in the first half of the 19th century. It extends to Prince Edward Island, St. John, Cape Breton, the Madelaine Islands, and the Sable Islands. Topographical features of landforms, water bodies, and fishing banks are labeled in addition to geographical features such as ports, counties, towns, and cities. As was typical of his cartographic style, Vandermaelen has included notations throughout the map that describe the region. The map appeared in Vandermaelen's "Atlas Universal." The map is in excellent condition, a dark impression on bright, clean paper. Deluxe margins with no chips or tears, minor wear to corners not affecting the image. Phillippe Marie Vandermaelen (1795-1869) was a Belgian cartographer and publisher. His Atlas universal was both the first lithograph atlas and the first atlas to map the world on a uniform scale. The maps were meant to join together to form a huge globe. This map is a fine example of his work.

TWO VOLUMES bound in one. 30 copper-plate engraved plates, marbled endpapers, xvi+466pp, 9 x 6 inches, leather spine and corners with marbled paper covered boards (hardbound). Cover worn with rubbing to extremities, previous owner's name in ink to front fly leaf, front hinge detached at frontispiece, toning and offset to frontispiece and pictorial title page, scattered foxing throughout; text block is tight. A painter and engraver, Dagley's illustrations are offered in support of texts by a variety of authors including Mrs. Hemans, Mrs. Hofland, S. Maunder, John Fitzgerald Pennie, and a host of others. The immediate success of the first edition was followed by a second edition with six more plates. Dagley writes in his Preface: "In the volume now presented to the Public, my part is little besides that of having projected the work, and furnished the designs. It is to the kind contributors who have so amply and ably illustrated the subjects of my pencil that I must attribute any success that may attend the work; and to them I embrace this opportunity of returning my most grateful acknowledgments." The volume also contains six pages of Extracts from the Press offering fulsome praise for the first volume. In each illustration Death is watching, usually in the form of a skeleton, but in the case of the Hypochondriac, Death is a spider with a skull for a body, waiting patiently on the hearth.

JARRIN, Guglielmo William Alexis.
London: William H. Ainsworth, , 1827. Or the complete economy of desserts containing the elements of the art, according to the most modern and approved practice. Octavo. Original green paper boards, rebacked, title label to spine, new endpapers. 2 engraved fold out plates. Rubbing and some loss to corners, chip to board at front fore-edge, occasional spotting. A very good copy. First revised edition, corrected and expanded, third edition overall. Originally published in 1820. "The book sits within an English tradition of publishing recipes for food and confectionery, but it reveals more about the techniques involved, and about the character of the author, than was usual in the genre. Written when confectionery production was on the point of being industrialised through the activities of such contemporaries as Joseph Terry of York, it represented the high point of artisan skills in the craft, which Jarrin believed could not be improved upon. He devoted several chapters to his speciality of making ornaments for the dessert table using various edible and non-edible materials. Other chapters covered more standard ground including recipes for small confections, preserving fruit, and making ices, but with details which throw light on both his own skills and continental practice. He provided instructions on modelling and wood carving (one wooden confectionery mould signed by him has come to light), and evidently possessed artistic talents, for he signed the two engraved plates illustrating confectionery equipment. Proud of his ingenuity as an inventor, Jarrin described inventi … [Click Below for Full Description]
