[Click Below for Full Description]

(reliure de l'?poque). ?dition originale tr?s rare. ? Baud, Jean Marie (author). Jacques Bernard Maassen (scribe)
Louvain, 1827. Hardcover. Very good. Dates: 1827-1829. 8vo. [2], 7, [12], 19-167; 147, 150-302 pp. (pagination skipped presumably due to a scribal error, resulting in the loss of one page of text?) + [15] pp. additional notes. Contemporary quarter morocco over recently renewed marbled boards, brilliantly executed in the antique style. Light dampstaining and light chipping to fore-edges of fly-leaves and several leaves at beginning (including title-page) and at end. WATERMARK: monogram "V D L" (doubtless Van der Ley family of papermakers, Zaanstreek, The Netherlands); countermark of a "palmette" or "shell" similar to Churchill 195. Manuscript of lost, unpublished lectures on Surgical Pathology by esteemed Louvain professor of medicine Jean-Marie Baud (1776-1852), a Professor of Medicine at the University of Louvain (1821-1830) and the Catholic University of Louvain until 1850. After describing Baud's distinguished career at length, Adolphe Quetelet, writing in the Biographie Nationale (Brussels, 1866, vol. I, cols. 781-785) states that of all Baud's writings, the unpublished lectures on Surgical Pathology "remain his most important. The manuscript exists in its entirety, but his last illness, it is said, did not give him time to revise the text, and the publication could not take place. Rather, we believe that, yielding to exaggerated scruples, he would not allow the impression of it." Quetelet would have been well positioned to know of the existence of the MS lectures, and would have been able to comment on their importance, having been Baud's close friend and colleague f … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

SOLIS, Antonio de, y Ribadeneyra
1829 Spanish Conquest of Mexico Solis Aztec Hernan Cortes Montezuma Conquista “The fleet was destroyed at the instance of the soldiers, that Cortes alone might not be obliged to make good the payment of the ships, but the troops.” – Solis, History (Townshend translation, 1770) A famous book on Spanish conquests – one of the most important European sources on Latin American history. Antonio de Solis’s “Historia de la Conquista de Mexico” was extremely popular in both Europe and in the Americas and was known by important colonial figures in Latin and European colonies. It deals, mainly, with Hernando Cortez and his command of invading forces of Moctezuma II and the Aztecs. Specific interactions include: • Cortez sailing from Trinidad to Havana, difficulties in voyages • Cortez at Cozumel, organizing his troops • Aztec opposition at the River of Grijalva • Spanish attempts to make peace with Cazique of Tobasco • Accounts of Moctezuma’s army and troop sizes • The Zempoalans, people of Zimpazingo • Conversion of Aztec temples into Catholic churches • Account of Hernando Cortez executing resolution to sink his ships • Manner of Aztec government • Prisoners and tortures • Mexican culture – festivals, marriages, rites and customs • Death of Cortez Item number: #3045 Price: $750 SOLIS, Antonio de, y Ribadeneyra Historia de la conquista de Mejico, poblacion y progresos de la America septentrional, conocida por el nombre de Nueva España Paris : Cormon y Blanc, 1827. [Murray, Hannah, & Mary Murray].
Imbert's Lithographic Office, 1827. Second edition of this variant of The Young Lady's Toilet, inspired by the original handmade books by Hannah and Mary Murray of New York, two young ladies who cut out pictures from periodicals and pasted them onto blank leaves, adding their own captions. Each lithographed vessel for a beauty product => displays a witty moral maxim behind a moveable flap (a concept that the Murrays may have adapted from the original 1821 London edition of The Toilet), providing the book's manipulator with emblematic instruction on true beauty, so that "A Wash to Smooth Wrinkles" is revealed as Contentment; "A Universal Beautifier" as Good Humor; "A Solution to Prevent Eruptions" as Moderation; and "An Elastic Girdle" as Benevolence -- well, that's a stretch! Each virtue is further described by rhyming couplet or two at the bottom of the page. Provenance: Faint pencil presentation inscription on front free endpaper, "Lizzie D. Karl from => M. Murray." Later in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.

Nodier, C.]
Paris, J.-S. Merlin, 1827-1844. Three works in one. 8vo (19.8 x 12.5 cm). I (1827): [2]-ii-58-[2] pp.; II (1829), iv-130-[2] pp.; III (J. Techener, 1844): viii-200 pp. Contemporary half morocco over marbled boards; spine with four raised bands; compartments with hand-tooled rectangular borders and gilt title. Marbled endpapers. A nicely bound ensemble of three very rare and important catalogues of the three auctions of the collection of the famous French author, librarian and book collector, Charles Nodier (1780-1844). The publisher of the third catalogue, J. Techener, wrote in its preface: "Voici l'une de ces perles précieuses dont la vue seule intéressera vivement tous les bibliophiles véritablement dignes de ce beau nom, c'est la collection de M. Charles Nodier". Many of the 15th- to 18th-century books listed, described and sold are - and were - very rare. All three catalogues with handwritten auction prices in the margins. An unmarked 24 pp. book catalogue - dated 1843 - of the "Librairie Historique et Curieuse de J. Techener" and listing 169 items, is bound in the rear. Light shelfwear to extremities; some minimal, scattered spotting; traces of a bookplate on the front pastedown; otherwise a very good copy. Brunet 4, p. 89. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A translation of DAS PETERMANNCHEN, his most popular work, a romantic thriller and ghost story set in the thirteenth century, first published in Prague in 1791-1792. "Spiess's romances were popular objects of English translation during the Gothic period and were adored for their fabulous medievalism." - Tymn, Horror Literature 1-370. Spiess (1755-1799) "... died [at the age of 44], almost insane, the result of his weird fancies ... Spiess, in his Ritter-, Räuber- and Geister-Romane, as they are called -- stories of knights, robbers and ghosts of the 'dark' ages -- the idea of which he borrowed from Goethe's Götz von Berlichingen and Schiller's Räuber and Der Geisterseher, was the founder of the German Schauerroman (shocker), a style of writing continued, though in a finer vein, by Carl Gottlob Cramer (1758-1817) and by Goethe's brother-in-law, Christian August Vulpius. These stories, though appealing largely to the vulgar taste, made Spiess one of the most widely read authors of his day." - Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11th ed., vol. XXV, p. 667. Comte, Charles.
Paris: A. Sautelet, 1826-1827. First edition. 8vo. 4 volumes: xiv, 517; (4), 478; (4), 492; (4), 538 pp. Charles Comte (1782-1837) was a French journalist, professor of natural law, and author of works on law, political economy, and history; he also served in the French Parliament and was a key participant in the liberal movement in 19th century France. His Treatise on legislation had a profound impact on his generation of French liberals. In this work he applies the same method of study to the moral world that had been used successfully in describing the physical; it is divided into five sections, the first dealing with the various theoretical underpinnings of law, the second with the nature of law, the power of the legislator, and the limits of law, the third with human development, a study of the various races and their varying degree of success in "perfecting" themselves, the fourth with theories of climate and the origins of slavery, and the fifth with the institution of slavery itself, its influence on political development and prospects for abolition. Some foxing, but a very good copy. Somewhat later green quarter morocco and pebbled cloth, gilt ornaments, rules, and title on spines. (#5252).

PIEMONTE - ATLANTE POSTALE (-)
Torino, Litografia F. Festa, 1827. Copertina originale muta in carta azzurrina. Manno, I/n. 2257).

But if you are serious make good your bost-throw the gantlett upon nutrill ground....""Jacksonian Congressman Samuel P. Carson dares his recent opponent Dr. Robert B. Vance to challenge him to a duel. Carson had won Vance's seat in 1825. In 1827, Vance tried to regain his old seat, in part by accusing Carson's father of turning Tory during the Revolutionary War. Carson's lopsided victory (by more than a two-to-one margin) apparently wasn't enough. On November 5, 1827, the men met near Saluda Gap, perhaps just over the border into South Carolina, where dueling was legal until 1880. Vance withheld his shot. Carson did not. Kyoto, 1827. Kawamura Kiho. Small quarto. 2, 31, 4ff. Illustrated with thirty color wood-block prints by ukiyo-e artist Kawamura Kiho. Kiho, who was also known as Shun, Goitsu, and Chikurikwan, was the adopted son and acknowledged disciple of artist Kawamura Bumpo. Both Bumpo and Kiho are stylistically similar to the the Shijo school, which preferred gray and black lines highlighted with pale blushes of color over the more vivid ukiyo-e style popular at the end of the eighteenth century. These light colors are perfectly suited to this sensitive collection, most of which illustrate simple and quiet scenes from everyday life. Farmers and fisherman are interspersed with portraits of plants and animals. Of especial interest are three prints of people reading-a farmer bundling rice while reading a book laid open on the ground, a bearded man huddling beneath a lamp, and man lounging beneath a full moon. The images are preceded by a four-page preface and one page of calligraphy, and followed by a closing note, eight pages of advertisements, and a colophon. In the original blue covers patterned with waves of mica, with a title label to the upper cover. Overall light soiling and wear to covers, with minor worming to inside covers and last two leaves; red stamp to lower right and small loss to fore-edge of front cover; unobtrusive ink inscription to inside front cover; re-sewn with new thread and housed in new chitsu. A beautiful book by an under-appreciated artist. (Ryerson, p. 388; Brown, p. 105; Mitchell, pp. 360-361, Example A; Franklin, pp. 75 & 79).
