[Buckingham, James Silk (ed.)].
1827. 8vo. (2), 210, (2), 211-422, (2), 423-664 pp. With a wood-engraved title vignette. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Brown marbled endpapers. A volume from James Buckingham's important journal which he founded in January 1824 under the significant title, "The Oriental Herald and Colonial Review", though the subtitle was renamed "Journal of General Literature" the following year. Several pieces are of direct relevance to the Arab world and the Gulf region: the transcript of a Debate at the East India House on the Bombay Marine (pp. 146ff.) variously discusses the "pirates in the Persian Gulph", the climate and various mishaps befalling ships there, while a review of the 1826 book "Sketches of Persia" (pp. 77ff.) gives an account of the "burning sandy plain which skirts the gulf". Johann Gottfried Eichhorn's "Historical Sketch of the Trade with India Before the Age of Mohamed" (pp. 437ff.) includes a discussion of Arabian and Gulf-region trade in the third century, and literature is represented in reviews of the Arabian tales "Abassah" (pp. 239ff.) and "Karmath" (pp. 557ff.). - "Except for 'The Asiatic Journal', the official publication of the East India Company, England had no paper devoted to colonial affairs. 'The duty of nations to enlighten and improve the condition of the people they subjugate,' he said in an introductory essay, 'can scarcely be required to be enforced by argument.' From this point of view he proposed to treat colonial problems in terms of colonial interests and at the same time to show the English people that conditions in the colonies … [Click Below for Full Description]

Notre blog : https://librairie-trois-plumes.blogspot.fr/ Notre mail : benoit@troisplumes.fr James Fenimore Cooper, The Red Rover [Le Corsaire Rouge], a Tale, by the author of the Pilot, etc., etc. The Red Rover & The Prairie. Son premier roman marin fut The Pilot. [Click Below for Full Description]

John Milton
Paradise Lost In Two Parts, John Milton, Illus John Martin, Septimus Prowett, 1827, 228 + 218ppKey feature: Martin's Mezzotints are absolutely unparallelled About the book: For sale is a true first edition of Paradise Lost illustrated by John Milton. This copy has been specially bound, to collate the original two volumes into one. The beautiful fine binding retains the original covers and endpapers, while adding a stunning new spine. It's truly of the highest craftsmanship. John Martin's mezzotint illustrations were a breakthrough for their time, and are some of the finest ever printed. An 1827 similar set of this same work is listed on eBay for £3900 and is in arguably worse condition than this one. A truly beautiful example, with remarkable binding, and good quality plates. Book measures 11.1 inches x 8.3 inches. Pages measure 10.8 inches x 7.4 inches Condition report: In Good to Very Good Condition See photos for accurate description. John Milton
The Paradise Lost of Milton. With Illustrations, Designed and Engraved, by John Martin. London: Septimus Prowett, 1827. Vols I & II, Complete.A TRULY STUNNING FIRST JOHN MARTIN ILLUSTRATED EDITION SET OF MILTON'S EPIC PARADISE LOSTClassic 1st edition stunningly bound set of small a folio sized prose/poetry collection by John Milton, the first with the appearance of the 24 fine full-page mezzotint plates by John Martin (1789- 1854). This was one of the most famous illustrated books published in England, and the only book for which John Martin is now remembered. "The publication was a complete success, and Martin's plates won lasting renown . There have been many ambitious schemes of publishing which have failed because the artist did not rise to the height of his opportunity, but this was emphatically not the case with Martin. Among the plates of Paradise Lost there is a high proportion of unique and original design" (Balston). "Martin's imagery was drawn partly from the mystical and partly from the industrial, while being an incurable romantic, he was also a child of the Industrial Revolution and his vast palaces, gorges and subterranean caverns have a quality of fact and experimental engineering about them" (Houfe). John Martin was one of the earliest practitioners of the mezzo-tint steel-engraving process, beginning his career in 1825, producing these illustrations for the first time through 1827 for this Prowett imprint, the true 1st edition. Rare large 8vo editions, in great shape with stunning thick gilt bordered red leather, the well-designed spines featuring thick gi … [Click Below for Full Description]

LASTRA, Francisco de la.
[Santiago de Chile], Imprenta de la Biblioteca, dated 9 March 1827. Folio (30.5 x 20.5 cm.), unbound. Caption title. Two columns. Uncut. In fine condition. Broadside. *** Lastra reports the news gathered from the British brigantine Macard. First is a list of army officers who had been disgraced by their opposition to General José Antonio Páez during the "Cosiata" in Venezuela, which had begun in mid-1826 and had only recently been ended by Simón Bolívar's intervention. Also mentioned are new ministers chosen in Gran Colombia (modern Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, northern Peru, and northwest Brazil), and the call for a Congreso Estraordinario Constituyente to write a constitution. This resulted in the Convention of Ocaña, whose failure to achieve a compromise among warring parties in Gran Colombia led Bolívar to take over as dictator, and by 1830 to resign and retreat into self-imposed exile.Francisco de la Lastra (1777-1852) was an early advocate of Chilean independence and in 1814 served briefly as the country's first supreme director, before signing the Treaty of Lircay. Deported to the Juan Fernández Islands from 1814 to 1817, he returned to take up a position as intendant of Santiago. In the absence of Ramón Freire, Lastra was again the supreme director of Chile for a few months in 1823-1824. Lastra later led the liberals in the Civil War of 1829. After being defeated by General Prieto at Ochagavía, he became a judge and was elected to the Camara de Diputados del Congreso Nacional. This document is signed in print by Lastra as Señor Ministro de Estado y de relac … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Kitchiner
London: Henry Colburn, 1827. Condition: Very Good binding. Kitchiner is one our favorite Regency eccentrics. An optician by trade (we would love to have his book on choosing opera glasses!) he also wrote a number of cookery books and traveled with a portable cabinet for his ketchups and other sauces, including a special sauce of his invention called "Wow-Wow" sauce (no joke; break out the Weber). He brings his medical advice in these volumes to the art of travel--"Strong Pepperment Lozenges are excellent Stomach warmers, and very comforting companions in Cold Weather" (p. 95). Delightful books, both rebacked in japanese tissue, with new paper spine labels. [Attributes: First Edition]

Weinhaus [d. i. Wien-Währing], 30. VIII, 1827. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. [Providence, Rhode Island, c.1827]. [94]ff. with about [12]pp. of manuscript additions. 8 x 5 inches. Full brown calf with gilt stamped and rolled decorations; each cover with a tinted panel further inset with a diamond-shaped and faux wood-grained lozenge; gilt turn-ins; blue paste paper endpapers; all edges mottled. Contains watermarked papers of R. Hubbard of Norwich, CT and John Butler of Bristol, RI. The name "Sarah Allen" tooled in gilt on upper lozenge. Some scratches to covers and brief wear at tips; very good. Striking and most unusual American 1820s woman's album decorated with gold tooling and with tinted panels including an unusual faux wood-grained diamond-shaped lozenge on both covers. The album is stamped with the name Sarah Allen on the upper cover. A presentation inscription to her by Thomas Rivers is datelined 1827 in Providence, Rhode Island. Various other Providence datelines within and the presence of watermarks from Connecticut and Rhode Island on some leaves suggest the album was bound in that city. Interestingly, a number of the album's entries are later datelined 1829 Copenhagen which suggest Allen brought the album with her on a trip abroad. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

LEOPARDI, GIACOMO.
Milano, Antonio Fortunato Stella, 1827. In 12mo (mm. 173x103). Pp. [4], 255, [1]. Stella, cit. in Besomi, p. lxx). [Click Below for Full Description]

Leipzig Barth, 1827. (23 x 14 cm). XXIV, 454 S. Mit 4 gestochenen Falttafeln. Pappband um 1920, unbeschnitten. Erste Ausgabe seines wissenschaftlichen Hauptwerks. - "Möbius' 'Der barycentrische Calcul.' was not only his most important mathematical publication, but also the source of much of his later work. Möbius constructed a mathematical system, the fundamental entities of which were points, to each of which a weight or numerical coefficient was assigned. The position of any point could be expressed in this system by varying the numerical coefficients of any four or more non-coplaner points. Möbius went on in his treatise to apply this method with noteworthy success to many important geometrical problems. He was the first mathematician to make use of a system wherein geometrical entities, such as lines, plane figures, and solids, were consistently treated as spatially oriented and to which a positive or negative sign could be affixed. Moreover he presented in this work the construction now known as the Möbius net" (DSB). Oxford and London: Talboys and Wheeler; and William Pickering. 8 volumes, published 1827, old bookseller's note to verso of flyleaf 'proof portrait...only 100 printed' - a small quarto Large Paper edition (measures 10 x 6.5 inches; 26 x 16.5 cm) bound in contemporary half black morocco, marbled boards, raised bands, maroon spine labels. About very good set, all hinges and joints tight, but some rubbing to corners and joints, leather a little dry (we've dressed it and have redyed the rubbed parts), slight foxing to outermost leaves, first volume is lacking one of its spine labels (the volume number), volume number label for the eighth volume a little messed up; light dryness to spine ends and minute occasional chipping, eighth volume slightly leaning, slight residual dustiness (we found them in a basement and had to get rid of a lot of dust and cobwebs!). RARE and uncommon on the market -- the few 1827 sets at auction in recent years seem to be the 8vo and smaller editions of this set. With pencil signature of John C. B. Biddell ('bought at Pickering's, July 1846) - research reveals him to be Proctor for the Diocese of Canterbury. Another pen signature of Coker Adams, 1854 -- can't find anything on him. Very Good.

Mirza Itisam al-Din, a Bengali munshi and agent of the Mughal emperor Shah Alam II travelled to Britain in 1766 with Captain Archibald Swinton (1731-1804), an Edinburgh-trained surgeon who had reached India in 1752 and served under Robert Clive in the Carnatic. Clive and the emperor each sought the support of King George III after the East India Company's forces crushed the Mughal army at Buxar in 1764. The linguistically-talented Captain Swinton negotiated the emperor's surrender and the Treaty of Allahabad's humiliating terms, which granted the collection of Bengal's entire revenue to the Company in 1765. Itisam al-Din's mission was to persuade the British Crown to restore Shah Alam to his throne at Delhi, but Clive prevented the emperor's gifts and letters from sailing with Itisam al-Din in 1766 and Swinton ensured that the munshi was never presented at court. Despite this bitter failure, and his scathing descriptions of the duplicitous Clive, Itisam al-Din remained in Britain until 1769. Swinton was an educated man, who collected Persian manuscripts and Indian miniatures, and he introduced the munshi to a young William Jones at Oxford, where they consulted on some Persian translations; later they travelled to Glasgo … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
