William Kitchiner; John Jervis [an old Coachman]
Henry Colburn, 1827. Full Leather. Second Edition. Kitchiner is one our favorite Regency eccentrics. An optician by trade (we would love to have his book on choosing opera glasses!) he also wrote a number of cookery books and traveled with a portable cabinet for his ketchups and other sauces, including a special sauce of his invention called "Wow-Wow" sauce (no joke; break out the Weber). He brings his medical advice in these volumes to the art of travel--"Strong Pepperment Lozenges are excellent Stomach warmers, and very comforting companions in Cold Weather" (p. 95). Delightful books, both rebacked in japanese tissue, with new paper spine labels. Very Good binding. [Attributes: First Edition]

Faraday, Michael
London: Printed and Published by W. Phillips, 1827. Hard Cover. First Edition. Near Fine. First edition, first printing. Contemporary three-quarter brown calf over textured brown cloth, spine ruled in gilt and stamped in blind, with a contrasting brown spine label lettered in gilt, green and red marbled endpapers and text block edges. A near fine copy, rebacked, some wear to extremities and soiling to boards, interior very fresh and clean with four previous ownership signatures to first free leaf and one to front free endpaper, some light foxing to prelims. Overall a handsome, sturdy copy of a very scarce book. Chemical Manipulation is a book detailing the author's knowledge of Chemistry, covering much of the same material as the lectures Faraday composed as a member of the Royal Institution, a British organization dedicated to scientific discovery. Although this volume does not put forward any new theories in the field, it contains a comprehensive description of many experimental laboratory procedures, drawn from the author's own practices, and inspired many subsequent pieces of writing on the same subject. Notably, despite his lack of formal education, Faraday had an enormous impact on both physics and chemistry. His discoveries in physics formed the basis for the modern understanding of electromagnetic fields, and his work as a chemist resulted in the discovery of the chemical compound Benzene, a main component in petroleum-based fuel, among other accomplishments. 1827. Notre blog : https://librairie-trois-plumes.blogspot.fr/ Notre mail : benoit@troisplumes.fr James Fenimore Cooper, The Red Rover [Le Corsaire Rouge], a Tale, by the author of the Pilot, etc., etc. The Red Rover & The Prairie. Son premier roman marin fut The Pilot. [Click Below for Full Description]

Funk, A. F.
Berlin, Duncker & Humblot, 1827. Tall folio (44.9 x 26.7 cm). xiii, 60 pp.; three fine, large, hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt lines; front board with red morocco label with gilt ornamental borders and gilt title. Edges yellow. The author, Adolph Friedrich Funk (1802-1830) might have become one of the foremost herpetologists of the 19th century, but his premature death intervened, and he published only this fine, well-illustrated work. It deals with all aspects of the fire salamander, a colourful species from Central Europe, including its anatomy, morphology, ontogenese (all illustrated on the three plates), its ecology and behaviour, the history of its descriptive zoology from Socrates to Gessner, and from Linnaeus to Merrem and Rusconi, and its place in human history, folklore, and literature, extensively quoting original sources (some even in Hebrew, Ancient Greek, German, French and several other languages). Funk dedicated his work to H. Lichtenstein, H. F. Link, and several others. The work was printed by Johann Friedrich Starck in Berlin in 1826 and published the next year. The story of his travels and early death is found in Wilhelm Holm's Reise durch Deutschland, Ungarn, Holland, Italien, Frankreich, Großbritannien und Irland: in Rücksicht auf medicinische und naturwissenschaftliche Institute, Armenpflege u. s. w. (Berlin, 1831). Boards a bit rubbed, small professional repair to the head and tail of spine. A near spotless, unmarked copy in a very nice, contemporary binding. MORRIS, William
1827. Two pages, folded 8vo sheet, on Morris's printed Kelmscott House letterhead. Item #404812 Morris writes to Holman Hunt (1827-1910), English painter and one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, about the exhibition in Brussels being organized by Octave Maus "to which I am contributing somewhat: he has asked me to mention him to you and I do so knowing that this is a growing interest and quite an intelligent one being taken in France and Belgium in the English schools of art, both decorative and more strictly pictorial. Yours very truly, William Morris." Maus organized two exhibitions entitled La Libre Esthétique in 1894 and 1895. These followed Morris's own model - but to even greater breadth - that exhibitions include all of the arts, including the decorative ones. These salons attracted the attention of many important early moderns. Morris's typography, wallpapers, fabrics, and designs were exhibited alongside works by Paul Gauguin, Lucien and Camille Pissaro, Paul Signac, Alfred Sisley, Odilon Redon, and Pierre Auguste Renoir. Also exhibited was Aubrey Beardsley, an artist Morris disliked intensely. Kelvin points to these exhibitions as evidence of the complicated relationship Morris had to early modernism, and writes of this letter: "And certainly of significance, Morris was quite ready in 1895 to write to Holman Hunt and speak approvingly of La Libre Esthétique and urge him to participate (he did). The strong impression made on him by this fact is that when Morris was properly approached, or perhaps approached by the Continent, an ambitious dream of … [Click Below for Full Description]

FOX, George Townshend.
Newcastle: T. and J. Hodgson, 1827. Octavo, with 13 engraved plates including a portrait of Tunstall; nineteenth century quarter calf, marbled boards. Pioneering work, which describes the contents of one of the most significant 18th-century collections of natural history and ethnography. The Museum grew from two important private collections: the naturalist Marmaduke Tunstall began collecting for his private museum in London in the 1770s, acquiring numerous 'curiosities brought by Captain Cook'; he moved the collections in 1776 to his new home at Wycliffe, Yorkshire; after his death the Wycliffe Museum was bought by George Allan, lawyer and avid antiquary, adding it to his own substantial holdings to form the Allan Museum. On his death the museum went to his son, and in 1822 the combined collections passed into the hands of the Literary and Philosophical Society of Newcastle upon Tyne. The collection remains intact in Newcastle today. Fox's Synopsis is an important work in the early cataloguing of collections of this type and remains the main source of information for this still extant collection. It is a rarity: Forbes records a single copy (Bishop Museum) and, despite much of Australian interest, it was not noted by Ferguson. Of significance are various ethnographic specimens brought back from Cook's voyages. The section "Utensils of Savage Nations" contains notes on artefacts from New Zealand, 'Owhyhee and other Sandwich Islands', Otaheite, Tonga, New Caledonia, and the Americas. Allan had mentioned 'curiosities brought by Captain Cook' in the title of a manuscript catal … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Kitchiner
London: Henry Colburn, 1827. Condition: Very Good binding. [Attributes: First Edition]

VITICULTURE.) PARMENTIER, André.
[New York?: , 1827]. Slim folio broadside, early addition of another 4 lines of printed instructions at foot. 324 x 128 mm. In very good condition. An apparently unrecorded broadside, intended as planting and growing instructions to be given to the purchaser of vines sold by the landscape architect André Parmentier (1780-1830). Parmentier came to America from Belgium in 1821, and founded the Horticultural and Botanic Garden of Brooklyn, where he sold European vines to the American market. The broadside was printed with a gap for manuscript additions relative to the specific vine, here filled in by a contemporary hand, probably Parmentier's, with a simple diagram and a few words describing the proper placement of the vine, as well as crossing out a few words (still legible). At the head of the broadside is written in the same hand "The black Muscat No 10 is turned. The others the same". It is this that allows the broadside to be identified to Parmentier; in the Rochester Daily Advertiser, 1 November 1827, Parmentier placed an advertisement for his vines, with number 10 being Black Muscat. Moreover, the advertisement also provides as references Colonel Gibbs and Doctor Vanderveer, both of whom are also mentioned on the broadside (George Gibbs was an authority on viticulture; the American grape variety Isabella is named after his wife). Finally, the advertisement specifies that the purchaser will receive "directions on the best mode of cultivating and planting the vine", which is of course what the present item is. Though Parmentier achieved fame as a landscape architect, … [Click Below for Full Description]

The plates are imperfectly numbered. The frontispiece is an aquatint, and is notionally plate [XIV]. He received a promotion for this coup, but in 1817 fell victim to the Inquisition and was (according to his own account) imprisoned and tortured. Whitehall: Or, The Days of George IV 1827 1st edition anonymous but author William Macginn Published by William Marsh, London Leather spine and corners marbled boards and end pages SIGNATURE on title page pencil note at the front states taht this may be British Prime mInister- George Canning The book is a satirical future history tale that claims to be an historical novel first published in the year 2227 in the capital of the great empire of Yankeedoodoolia, 400 years after the events in London described, and which gives "as graphic and correct a picture" as "the general current of our London historical novels give of the events of 400 years ago, when they treat of them" It satirized many of the bigwigs of the day including Wellington His only novel, "Whitehall" (1827) is a droll spoof of the vogue for historical novels as well as the contemporary political scene. William Maginn (1793-1842) was a colorful and important character in his day, a leading contributor to BLACKWOOD'S MAGAZINE in the 1820s, and in 1830 the founder of FRASER'S MAGAZINE. He was notoriously dissipated, and in 1837 was destitute and driven to debtor's prison. Thackeray (one of his protégés) depicts Maginn as "Captain Shandon" in his HISTORY OF PENDENNIS (1878). John Milton
Paradise Lost In Two Parts, John Milton, Illus John Martin, Septimus Prowett, 1827, 228 + 218ppKey feature: Martin's Mezzotints are absolutely unparallelled About the book: For sale is a true first edition of Paradise Lost illustrated by John Milton in remarkable condition. This copy has been specially bound, to collate the original two volumes into one. The beautiful fine binding retains the original covers and endpapers, while adding a stunning new spine. It's truly of the highest craftsmanship. John Martin's mezzotint illustrations were a breakthrough for their time, and are some of the finest ever printed. Often considered alongside Gustave Dore and William Blake, these plates are currently selling individually for up to £277. That'd make this volume worth £6648 if sold in the same way. An 1827 similar set of this same work is listed on eBay for £3900 and is in arguably worse condition than this one. A truly beautiful example, with remarkable binding, and good quality plates. Condition matters hugely with these illustrations - and these are some of the finer examples I've seen. Book measures 11.1 inches x 8.3 inches. Pages measure 10.8 inches x 7.4 inches Condition report: In Good to Very Good Condition See photos for accurate description. Fine binding is in good condition, although with some small marks and general wear Bookplate to frontpaper Some light foxing but overall pages clean Some toning and browning to pages pposite plates but a rather bright example in all. Oxford and London: Talboys and Wheeler; and William Pickering. 8 volumes, published 1827, old bookseller's note to verso of flyleaf 'proof portrait...only 100 printed' - a small quarto Large Paper edition (measures 10 x 6.5 inches; 26 x 16.5 cm) bound in contemporary half black morocco, marbled boards, raised bands, maroon spine labels. About very good set, all hinges and joints tight, but some rubbing to corners and joints, leather a little dry (we've dressed it and have redyed the rubbed parts), slight foxing to outermost leaves, first volume is lacking one of its spine labels (the volume number), volume number label for the eighth volume a little messed up; light dryness to spine ends and minute occasional chipping, eighth volume slightly leaning, slight residual dustiness (we found them in a basement and had to get rid of a lot of dust and cobwebs!). RARE and uncommon on the market -- the few 1827 sets at auction in recent years seem to be the 8vo and smaller editions of this set. With pencil signature of John C. B. Biddell ('bought at Pickering's, July 1846) - research reveals him to be Proctor for the Diocese of Canterbury. Another pen signature of Coker Adams, 1854 -- can't find anything on him. Very Good.
