Malaria: An Essay on the Production and Propagation of this Poison, and on the Nature and Localities of the Places by which it is produced : with an enumeration of the diseases caused by it, and of the means of preventing or diminishing them, both at home and in the naval and military service.

Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, London 1827 - 8vo (216 x 132 mm). iv, [2], [1]-480 pp. Errata leaf. Later half calf over cloth, spine with gilt morocco label (rubbing to spine and boards, corners bumped). Internally clean, very little spotting in places. Provenance: Oxford, Bodleian library (armorial bookplate signed " "E. BIBL. RADCL." to front pastedown and deaccession stamp); The library of Hugh Selbourne. ---- Wellcome IV, p.7. - FIRST EDITION. John MacCulloch (1773-1835) was a Scottish surgeon and geologist, president of the Geological Society from 1816 to 1818, and fellow of the Royal Society. "MacCulloch inquiring mind and interest in medicine lasted throughout his life. His principal piece of medical research on malaria gained him great credit . and it is still a valuable contribution the the history of tropical medicine. This and his work on remittent and intermittent fevers, a reviewer commented, 'brought together such an amount of curious and instructive information as has rarely been collected on any one medical subject'. The work is presented as the study of the natural history of a disease and he stresses the significance of the environment in the spread of malaria, a term first used by MacCulloch." (C. J. Duffin et al., A history of geology and medicine, Geol. Soc. London, 2013, p.406). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Encyclop?die der philosophischen Wissenschaften im Grundrisse.

8vo., xlii 544pp., the paper throughout generally a little browned and foxed, original boards with a spine label lettered in gilt, wear to joints and extremities, red edges. A good, sound, copy with several early ownership inscriptions, including I.F.C. Kampe (mid 19th century), Jonas Cohn (1931) and Selly Oak Colleges Library (bookplate on pastedown and tiny inkstamp in lower margin of title). First published in 1817, this was one of only four works published by Hegel in his lifetime. As an Encyclopedia of the Philosophical Sciences, it was in fact a summary of his entire philosophical system and is thus therefore of enduring value.

The trial of Edward Gibbon Wakefield,

8vo., xv (1) 350pp., complete with the half-title and Appendix (pp.305-350), half-title rather soiled, rebound relatively recently in cloth with a leather gilt lettered spine label. A solid, workmanlike, but not very appealing binding. A good copy, nonetheless. The original account of one of the most celebrated English criminal trials of the 19th century which resulted in the young Edward Gibbon Wakefield (1796-1862), later to be the acclaimed colonial statesman, being sent to prison for three years. In 1816 he had made a runaway match with an heiress and ward in chancery, Eliza Susan Pattle, the orphan daughter of a Canton merchant. He afterwards returned to Turin as secretary to the under-secretary of the legation, and after his wife's death on 5 July 1820 he became connected with the Paris legation. In 1826, urged on by the persuasions of his friends in Paris, he made a foolhardy attempt to improve his prospects by a second marriage. On 7 March by a false message he beguiled from school Ellen Turner, the daughter of William Turner of Shrigley, a wealthy Cheshire manufacturer, inducing her, by representing that her father's fortune depended on her compliance, to go through a ceremony of marriage at Gretna Green. He took the lady with him to Calais, but forbore to consummate the marriage; at Calais he was overtaken by his bride's enraged relatives, who induced her to leave him. Wakefield returned to England to share the fate of his accomplice, his brother William, who had already been arrested. They were both sentenced to three years' imprisonment. The question of the legality of the marriage was involved in so much doubt that it was cancelled by special Act of Parliament. Some two years after his release he published the result of his prison experience and reflections, Facts relating to the Punishment of Death in the Metropolis (London, 1831, 8vo), a book remarkable alike for its insight and for its extraordinary power of portrayal. To his clear demonstration that punishment is deterrent according to its certainty, not according to its severity, the amelioration of English criminal law was largely due.

        O ubostwie i ubogich.

8vo. Original [?] plain wrappers; pp. [4], iii, 150, [2, blank]; apart from light toning, and the final blank partly stuck to rear wrapper, a fine copy in its original state. Rare first edition of an early Skarbek title on political economy, based on the Polish experience, his On Misery and the Poor, dedicated to Zofia Zamoyska (1780-1837), member of the Polish high nobility, hailed at the Congress of Vienna as the most outstanding beauty. 'The conception of the moral unification and solidarity of all social states was ... developed and popularized on a European scale by Fryderyk Skarbek, writer, activist, and educator, who today is too little remembered. In his book On the Misery and the Poor (O ubóstwie i ubogich), edited in 1827, speaking about duties of the privileged he applied a theory of social models which he later developed in his essay in French entitled Essai de Morale Civique (1860), touching upon the so-called active people' (Zygmunt Komorowski, Universal Values in Polish Culture, online). Skarbek was befriended by and godfather to the composer Frédéric Chopin (1810-49), who had been born on the Skarbek estate in ?elazowa Wola. As well as stage plays, Skarbek wrote on social issues, fiction, satires, worked on prison reform in Britain, Holland and Russia, and is responsible for the design of the infamous Pawiak prison in Warsaw. Count Fryderyk Skarbek (1792-1866) studied in Warsaw and Paris, where he obtained private tuition in economics from Saint-Aubin and Piotr Maleszewski. ?In 1818 he was called to the chair of political economy at the University of Warsaw, where he taught with great success until the closing of the institution by the Russian authorities after the collapse of the Polish insurrection in 1831 ... His literary legacy includes besides several works on economics, which established his reputation as the foremost Polish economist of his period, a number of studies in the field of history, criminology, statistics and general social reform. While Skarbek regarded himself as a follower and interpreter of the classical school of economics, he departed from its teachings in a number of significant respects. Even in his early writings he drew a sharp distinction between theoretical economics, which has for its purpose the discovery of universal principles on the nature and source of the wealth of nations, and applied economics, in which the general principles shoud be modified in accordance with the geographical location, degree of economic development and other peculiarities of the respective nations' (Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences).

Rieger'schen Buchhandlung, (1827) 1833-1858. 7 volumes. 4to (215 x 175mm), with the lithographed portrait of the author and 700 hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary green half morocco, richly gilt decorated spines with gilt lettering, green marbled sides. First and only edition. One of the rarest lepidopterological iconographies, published in 120 parts over a period of 25 years. Our copy has the rare portrait which is mostly not present. The plates were drawn, engraved and coloured by the author. The plates are very finely handcoloured and depict 2-4 butterflies each, often figured with its caterpillars and feeding plants. W. Junk in his 'Rara' (1926-36) states that the above work has become very rare: "Exemplare der 'Neueren Beiträge' sind sehr selten geworden". /Christian Friedrich Freyer (1794-1886) was to become the second famous Augsburg entomologist after Jacob Hübner. Hübner died in 1826 but Freyer had been in close contact with him. In order to keep the costs as low as possible Freyer taught himself the art of drawing, colouring and engraving. The last volume has irregular pagination as in all copies, pages 1-106, 105-168, 177-195 (the gap in pagination conforms to other copies; pages 169-176 were not printed, and two different leaves are paginated 105-6).//Hagen I, 251; Horn & Schenkling 7070.         Testacea fluviatilia quae in itinere per Brasiliam annis MDCCCXVII-MDCCCXX . collegit et pingenda curavit.

      - Lipsiae, T.O. Weigel, (1827). 4to (370 x 270mm). pp. [viii], 36, with 29 handcoloured lithographed plates. Contemporary quarter cloth and marbled boards (ends of spine with small repair). First edition of this monograph on the freshwater molluscs of Brazil, the first work devoted to Brazilian shells, and one of several publications resulting from Spix and Martius' expedition to Brazil from 1817 to 1820. The expedition was under the aegis of the King of Bavaria, Maximilian Joseph I. 'His plans for sending scientific explorers to South America were realized in 1817, when an Austrian expedition was sent to Brazil. Martius and several other Bavarian scientists, including his companion, the zoologist Spix, went along. They left Trieste on 2 April 1817 and returned to Munich in December 1820' (DSB).'Spix and Martius were the first European scientists to visit the Amazon after La Condamine. Their collections . provided material for a vast number of works by other scientists. Spix himself was occupied entirely with publishing his findings after his return to Munich. Weakened by the fevers that he had suffered on his voyage, he died [in 1826], leaving other zoologists, including Louis Agassiz, to complete the publication of his works' (ibid.).For this volume the descriptions were provided by J.A. Wagner. It was edited by Paula von Schrank and Martius.Borba de Moraes II 280; Nissen ZBI, 3954 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Calling Card" (sometimes called a bookplate) for George Cumberland.

      - [London: ?William Blake, ?1827] Printed in black ink on thick card. Very finely printed, in good condition though trimmed very close to the image at the left and right edges, once pasted down and thus with traces of mounting on the verso and pencil notes from an earlier collector (c. 1950?), image and plate mark exactly as per Essick 1DD. Blake's last engraving, executed for one of his closest friends. The images invoke one of Blake's greatest themes?the relationships between time and eternity. Although probably intended as a calling card, two books have been located with this card pasted in, both written by George Cumberland Jr. Thus it has on occasion been sold as a "bookplate". Examples on card not in Cumberland's book are exceptionally rare, and have been presumed to be of the earliest printing and possibly by Blake himself. All other impressions (on laid paper most often) are posthumous. Thirty-nine examples in all are known to Essick, not including examples now untraced, of which eight are on card, of which one is described as printed in green ink. Essick, The Separate Plates of William Blake, XXI, see entry 1DD for identical measurements (but not this copy). Bindman, Complete Graphic Works of Blake, 654.

1827 Autograph Letter Signed by Jurist Lemuel Shaw to Gettysburg

1827. Lemuel Shaw Asks Edward Everett to Help a Friend Seeking a Naval Commission Shaw, Lemuel [1781-1861]. Everett, Edward [1795-1865]. [Autograph Letter by Shaw, Signed, to Edward Everett with Everett's Appended, And Signed, Letter of Transmittal, Boston, October 4, 1827 and October 12, 1827]. Single leaf folded to form 9-3/4" x 7-3/4" bifolium with integral address leaf, franked in red on verso of second leaf. Some toning, old lines with short tears at ends, some remnants of paper from old mounting on back with no loss of legibility. * This 1827 letter from future Chief Justice of Massachusetts Lemuel Shaw to then Congressman and future Gettysburg orator Edward Everett contains two letters. It contains Shaw's original letter, requesting help for a friend who was seeking a commission as a purser in the Navy, and Everett's appended letter on behalf of Shaw's friend to the Secretary of the Navy, Samuel L. Southward. In the 19th century, Edward Everett was celebrated as a preacher and public orator. He is most famous for delivering a two-hour oration in 1863 at the dedication of the Gettysburg military cemetery. Everett's speech was subsequently eclipsed by President Abraham Lincoln's immortal, two-minute Gettysburg Address. At the time this letter was written Shaw had already served in both houses of the Massachusetts Legislature and had drafted the first charter of the City of Boston. In 1830, he became the Chief Justice of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He served on that court for 30 years and participated in such notable cases as the "Parkman-Webster" murder case and in Commonwealth v. Hunt, an important labor law precedent establishing that labor unions were not criminal conspiracies.

W. Junk in his 'Rara' (1926-36) states that the above work has become very rare: "Exemplare der 'Neueren Beiträge' sind sehr selten geworden".Christian Friedrich Freyer (1794-1886) was to become the second famous Augsburg entomologist after Jacob Hübner. Hübner died in 1826 but Freyer had been in close contact with him. In order to keep the costs as low as possible Freyer taught himself the art of drawing, colouring and engraving. The last volume has irregular pagination as in all copies, pages 1-106, 105-168, 177-195 (the gap in pagination conforms to other copies; pages 169-176 were not printed, and two different leaves are paginated 105-6).Hagen I, 251; Horn & Schenkling 7070.

108). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Tableau Encyclopédique et Méthodique des Trois Règnes de la Nature: VERS, COQUILLES, MOLLUSQUES ET POLYPIERS.

      - Paris, Agasse, 1827. 3 volumes. 4to (292 x 220mm). pp. viii, 180, with 493 engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, richly gilt spines with 2 blue gilt lettered labels, marbled sides. A fine complete copy of the invertebrate section of the 'Encyclopédie Méthodique.' The shell section covers plates 160 to 471, and all plates are suberbly drawn and engraved, many by De Sève, Marechal, Redouté and other famous artists of the period. 'Bruguière is chiefly remembered for his writings on invertebrates in the 'Encyclopédie Méthodique'; and his excellent work on lower animals earned him a high reputation in his day. Among the larger French collections in private hands was that of the eminent botanist Louis Claude Marie Richard, which was advertised for sale in 1819. If the advertisement is to be believed it must have been very fine indeed; for it included the valuable Hwass collection and 167 paintings of shells executed by J. Barraband, many of them being the originals from which the illustrations of the 'Encyclopédie Méthodique' were engraved' (Dance pp. 63 & 98).
