Carte de l'achiplel des iles Gilbert..

Paris: Arthus Bertrand, 1827. Fine.. Map measuring 610 x 440 mm. (sheet size). Delicately engraved chart of the Gilbert Islands in present-day Micronesia, from the official atlas of the French scientific expedition of 1822-1825 under the command of Louis-Isidor Duperrey. The Duperrey voyage is of great importance to the history of European contact with the indigenous peoples of Micronesia. It was also the first time accurate maps of the region were produced. The expedition left France in the Coquille in August 1822, and after venturing through the Pacific and stopping at New Zealand they reached the Gilbert islands in May 1824. Overall, the experience of French sailors and scientists of the Duperrey expedition in Micronesia was peaceful (so much so that two sailors chose to remain on the Chuuck islands rather than remain aboard the Coquille and return to Europe). This contact was greatly different to earlier landfalls made by the Spanish, which were characterised by violence and pillaging of the native villages. For a full description of Duperrey voyage in this region see Francis Hezel The First Taint of Civilization. A history of the Caroline and Marshall Islands in pre-Colonial days (pages 95-102).

Narrative of Don Juan Van Halen's Imprisonment in the Dungeons of the Inquisition at Madrid, and His Escape in 1817 and 1818; to Which are Added His Journey to Russia, His Campaign with the Army of the Caucasus, and His Return to Madrid in 1821

Henry Colburn, London 1827 - First edition in English. Two volumes, pp. xix, 380, with frontis portrait and two folding facsimiles; xv, 496. with frontis portrait, two folding panoramas, and folding sketch map of the Caucasus and Georgia. Contemporary marbled boards, rebacked with modern calf spine with gilt rules and red label. Edges and corners rubbed. Bindings sound, text with some foxing and offsetting. A Spaniard of Dutch heritage, Van Halen (1788-1864) entered the Spanish navy in 1803, sailing to Cuba and Mexico. In 1808 he became involved in the Peninsula Campaign, first fighting for the Spanish, then briefly joining the French after being taken prisoner, and finally returning to the Spanish side, boldly fooling the French into surrendering three forts by dressing as a French officer and presenting forged documents announcing a treaty. He received a promotion for this coup, but in 1817 fell victim to the Inquisition and was (according to his own account) imprisoned and tortured. Escaping to Russia, he spent 18 months as a colonel in the Caucasus Dragoon Regiment under General Yermalov in Tblisi, Georgia. Despite some likely fictional elements, this account of his adventures is generally regarded as based in truth. British traveler and scholar John Frederick Baddeley describes it as "one of the best of the early books of travel and adventure in the Caucasus" (Russian Conquest of the Caucasus, p. 123).         Autograph letter draft. No place, 30. XII. 1827.

1827. 4to. 20 pp. on sewn double leaves. To Philip Henry, 4th Earl Stanhope (1781-1855, later custodian of Kaspar Hauser), discussing the political situation in Europe after the Battle of Navarino, which led to Greek independence from Ottoman rule. Gentz, no disciple of Philhellenism, anticipates the importance of the Battle's outcome for the European balance of powers and deplores the roles played by the political forces of the Great Powers. Gentz writes to the Earl, whose enthusiasm for all things German irritated his English countrymen, in German, penning only a draft and leaving the fair copy to his secretary, as he assumes his own handwriting might pose a problem to the unaccustomed reader: "[...] It cannot be [...]". - An extensive letter draft with numerous autograph insertions, deletions, and changes. Later publication note by a different hand (c. 1870) at the top of f. 1r; a quote which Gentz omitted from the letter (obviously intending his secretary to supply the text) bears the later editor's pencil note: "Die Stelle fehlt". - Highly characteristic document of Gentz's judgment of the European situation at the moment of the birth of modern Greece: one of the most talented statesmen of his time proves great skill in appraising the political results for the Great Powers; at the same time, the letter gives evidence that a visionary evaluation of the Greek cause, so highly regarded by many contemporaries, was beyond Gentz's capacity or inclination. Printed in normalised orthography in: Schlesier, Gustav v. (ed.). Schriften von Friedrich von Gentz. Ein Denkmal. Vol. V (1840), p. 138-146.

In a fine contemporary full calf binding. Spine with five raised bands, red and black morocco title vignettes and gilt floral patterns; boards with dentelles; lightly red-speckled edges.l Two large and very important papers by Cauchy, contained in the first volume of the Mémoires. The most important paper is Cauchy's cornerstone essay on definite integrals. It is essential in the history of mathematics, partly laying the basis for the Cauchy-Riemann equations. "In 1814 he submitted to the French Academy the treatise on definite integrals that was to become the basis of the theory of complex functions. In 1816 he won a prize contest of the French Academy on the propagation of waves at the surface of a liquid; his results are now classics in hydrodynamics." (DSB) Cauchy's method was significant because of his departure from the traditional use of geometry to treat the definite integral. The theory was read to the Academy by Cauchy in 1814, but only published in 1827 in this volume on pp. 599-799 and includes the rapport, introduction, parts 1 and 2, and two supplements. The second paper, on the "propagation des ondes a la surface" is on pp. 3-313. This volume also contains a memoir on the "theorie de la lune" by Damoiseau. Provenance: pictorial bookplate of the Radcliffe Observatory (the astronomical observatory of the University of Oxford from 1773 until 1934) on the front pastedown. Some small, skilful repairs, doing justice to an unusually fine and elegant contemporary binding. DSB III, pp. 137-138. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Read after drawings by J. Grant and Allan Hay) most with tissue guards, both map and plates with contemporary hand colour, additional leaf at the end with a manuscript index, high quality and very handsome modern half rich tan diced calf, spine panelled by broad raised bands each of which is highlighted by double gilt fillets and has a design composed of three gilt fillets and gilt ornaments on the top of the band, one panel direct gilt lettered, old marble on sides, old printed ticket (from an earlier binding) of "James D. Yeadon/ Bookseller, Stationer,/ and Librarian, 12 High Street, Elgin" replaced on front endpaper and likewise on verso of front endpaper "H. Sotheran & Co, 136 Strand, London",some light foxing throughout, foxing noticeable on 2 plates, else a very nice copy in a very handsome binding. The list names 159 subscribers of whom 59 took a "fine copy" (5 persons took 2 "fine" copies). "Alexander Stuart, Esq, Edinburgh" took a fine copy. In this context "fine" presumably means that the plates were coloured by hand. Shaw (1686?-1777), Church of Scotland minister and historian, "was a respected local historian who corresponded with many eminent figures ... Shaw was chiefly known for his History of the Province of Moray, published in 1775 and posthumously revised and republished in 1827 and 1882. During the early 1750s he also continued A Genealogical Dedication of the Family of Rose of Kilravock, written by Hew Rose in 1683-4 and printed in 1848. His 'Account of the family of Mackintosh', written in 1758, remained unpublished" [O.D.N.B.].

[but probably Osaka]: 1827. First edition. "The last monograph of importance on massage in old Japan was the Ampuku zukai, compiled and published by Shinsai Ota in 1827, which gave the technique of massage in text and illustrations."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books, II, pp. 485-86. This work by Ota, a physician in Osaka, serves as the foundation of modern Anpuku therapy.         Shigurf namah-i-velaët, or, excellent intelligence concerning Europe: being the travels of Mirza Itesa Modeen in Great Britain and France. London, James Duncan for John Taylor, 1827.

1827. XI, (1), 233, (1) pp. With a lithogr. frontispiece in original hand colour. Contemp. auburn calf with giltstamped rules to boards; leading edges gilt; spine rebacked. All edges gilt. 8vo. First edition of this account of a Middle Eastern civil servant's visit to Britain in 1765, translated from the original Persian manuscript by James Edward Alexander. Born in India, Itesa Modeen learned Persian and entered the service of the British. When Shah Alam wanted to send letters and gifts to King George III in England it was decided that these would be taken by a British army officer, accompanied by Modeen as his translator and secretary. Modeen wrote a record of his journey recording the sights he saw and the excited reactions of Londoners to the unusual sight of a high class "Hindoostanee" (as he called himself) visitor. It was not until some 60 years later that his manuscript account was translated and published. The Mirza spent about almost three years on his trip to Europe, staying mostly in London but also visiting Scotland and Oxford, before returning to his native India. - Insignificant foxing to title and final leaf. From the library of Sir Richard Strachey (1817-1908), the Indian administrator and father of Lytton Strachey (his engr. armorial bookplate to pastedown); later in the collection of Christopher Jower (bookplate to flyleaf).         Eigenh. Brief mit U. [Stuttgart, 22.1.1827].

1827. 1 S., verso Adresse (Faltbrief). 4to. Beiliegend Stahlstichportrait. - Verso in roter Tinte Empfängervermerk: "Dr. W.       1827. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo.

110 Slaves Owned by a Free Coloured Man - Belmont Estate - Parish of St. George

London, 10 July 1829. Signed manuscript document being an annual return to record the increase and decrease of slaves, by births and deaths, in the year 1827 at Belmont Estate, a sugar plantation in the parish of Saint George, Tobago, under the management and possibly the ownership of a Mr. McEwen Folio. 1 page manuscript text on one large double-leaf, laid watermark paper made by J. Green & Son and featuring a large fleur-de-lys emblem. Leaf measures approximately 48 x 33,5 cm. Docketed to verso. Signed in the original 10 July 1829, by Thomas Amyot, the Registrar of Colonial Slaves in Great Britain. With two plantations operating under the same name on the island of Tobago, and most of the surviving records naming Belmont Estate being ambiguous as to its district, the present document differs, and is most instrumental in determining the accurate history of one of the plantations. This is a slave register for "Belmont Estate... in the Parish of St. George," therefore representing the Belmont Estate which was owned by a "Free Man of Colour" - Robert Crooks, later a civil servant and police inspector who resided and worked in that parish. This Belmont estate is situated near Hope and Mesopotamia in Hillsborough Bay. Fascinating details pertaining to this plantation estate can be found in the digital database of the University College of London, UCL Department of History 2016, titled "Legacies of British Slave-ownership." This primary source document provides and elucidates previously unknown ownership history, of the Belmont Estate in Hillsborough Bay, St. George parish, Tobago, thereby completing the timeline between the original purchase of 1765 and the recipient of the slave compensation awarded in 1836. In 1807 when the Abolition of Slave Trade Act came into force, the trade of slaves from Africa to the British colonies became illegal. In 1819 the Office for the Registry of Colonial Slaves was established in London in order to combat ongoing illicit transportation. British Colonial administrators began keeping registers of black slaves who had been so-called "lawfully enslaved." Copies of the slave registers, such as, and including the present document, were submitted to the office in order to prove compliance. Registration generally occurred once every three years, and continued through to 1834 when slavery was officially abolished. A scarce surviving illustration of the great fortune available to the "Free Man of Colour" in contrast to the enslaved man, this uncommon manuscript provides invaluable answers regarding the history of a sugar plantation estate in Tobago, an estate for which there seems to be little else for conclusive documentation. British Colonial Administration in Tobago began in 1763 when the island was divided into seven parishes, and land was sold to prospective sugar planters. The parish divisions remain the same today. Historical documents show that there were two plantations named Belmont Estate, one in St. George, the other in St. John. Most of the existing records relating to the Belmont Estates are ambiguous, therefore are unclear as to which estate they belong to. The present document clearly states its placement "in the Parish of St. George" and thus represents the Belmont Estate which was owned by a "Free Man of Colour" - Robert Crooks, civil servant and police inspector. Furthermore, it provides the link between purchase and compensation for this particular estate. Belmont estate is situated along the coast of Hillsborough Bay, slightly east of Mount St. George and Barbados Bay. Both bays formerly known collectively as Barbados Bay, this estate first belonged to John Hunt who purchased in 20 May 1765. Thomas Orr bought it from him in 1773; 'Thomas Orr & Co.' appearing in archives as the owners of Barbados Bay (St George parish) Lots number 11 and 12, together with Lot number 22, became the Belmont estate. Thomas Orr died in 1787, leaving it to another Thomas Orr, "planter of Tobago" who is thought to be his nephew, whose will was proved in 1817. Six years later a return was filed for this estate, owned by a freeman named James Crooks. The "Official Return of Registrar of Slaves, Tobago" for the year 1823, records 85 slaves registered at Belmont Estate, owned by Tobago registrar James Crooks. His son, Robert Crooks (born in Tobago, 1810) inherited Belmont estate in 1826. He and his father were "free coloured" planters from a merchant family. Robert Crooks was appointed Inspector-General of Police at Tobago in 1854, Provost Marshal (prison warden), and a member of the Elective Legislative Assembly for the parish of St George in 1862, suggesting that his estate would have also been in the Parish of St George. In Tobago's Assessment Roll of 1881/82 he is recorded as still possessing 1 estate which was valued at £75. Robert Crooks and his brothers Thomas and William, as joint tenants by devise under the will of their father James Crooks, were awarded the compensation for the Belmont estate claim in 1836. The manager of the Belmont Estate is not found through online sources, although this document names a Mr. W. McEwen. Historical accounts state that Belmont estate was growing during the period of 1810s-1820s. The present register, made in 1828 and claiming 110 slaves, corroborates this as it shows an increase from the register filed in 1823 declaring 85 slaves. Document Heading: "Belmont Estate. Tobago. 1st January 1828 Annual Return of Plantation Slaves... for the Plantation Called Belmont in the Parish of St. George for the total number of all slaves belonging or attached to, or usually worked or employed thereon... additions to or deductions from the Stock of Slaves... between the first day of January 1827 and the first day of January 1828." Claiming to hold a total of 110 slaves, 54 being male and 46 female, the estate manager Mr. McEwen here documents only one birth in this particular year. Four deaths occurred, three African males dying of dysentery and the like, one Caribbean female (described only as yellow) having died from puerperal convulsions and other pregnancy related complications. None are named. Thomas Amyot (1775-1850) was an English antiquarian, a solicitor, private secretary to Secretary of State William Windham, Registrar of Colonial Slaves in the government offices of Great Britain, Secretary and Registrar of Records in Upper Canada, author and a founder of the Camden Society. Almost all the men and women awarded compensation under the 1833 Abolition Act are listed in what is called a Parliamentary Return, an official reply by a government body to a request from an MP. The return is often referred to as the Slavery Abolition Act: An account of all sums of money awarded by the Commissioners of Slave Compensation while its full title is Accounts of slave compensation claims; for the colonies of Jamaica. Antigua. Honduras. St. Christopher's. Grenada. Dominica. Nevis. Virgin Islands. St. Lucia. British Guiana. Montserrat. Bermuda. Bahamas. Tobago. St. Vincent's. Trinidad. Barbados. Mauritius. Cape of Good Hope. It can be found in House of Commons Parliamentary Papers 1837-1838 (215) vol. 48 and is 365 pages long. In 1832, before the abolition of slavery, there were 653 sugar estates in cultivation and over 500 coffee plantations in the British West Indies. The British Slavery Abolition Act provided grant totalling £20 million to compensate the slave-owners for the loss of their "human property"! The other Belmont Estate in Tobago, owned by Scott Alexander Gordon of Newton (d. 1824) and a family member, is not related to the above described estate, as it was situated in the Northeast division, St John parish. Archival documents record the following: 'Alex. & Nat. Gordon' were the original purchasers on 05/06/1770 of Northeast division (St John parish) Lots no. 35 and 36, which by 1773 were owned, together with Northeast division Lot no. 28 (which had originally been purchased 09/05/1769 by George Guise) by Alexander Gordon alone. Lots nos. 28 and 36 became the Starwood estate, and Lot no. 35 the Belmont estate. Nor should the Belmont estate described above be confused with Belmont, the suburb of Port-of-Spain on the island of Trinidad, which, although was initially a region containing coffee and sugar estates, it did not develop into a village until the British had abolished the slave trade in 1807 and the Royal Navy began to patrol the west coast of Africa to prevent slaves being taken to the New World. Many Africans were also freed by patrols at sea and were given an area on the island to settle, which became known as Freetown. After the emancipation of the slaves, in 1838, the settlement flourished, with former labourers turning to find independent employment, and the area rapidly developed into the suburb of Belmont.

"Severin v. Jaroszynski. Strafhause in Wien". Wohl Wien, bald nach 1827.

O. 1924). Ferner beiliegend handschriftliche Sammlungsumschläge um 1920 und 1950. Vgl. G. Ammerer, "... die Stunde hat geschlagen..."         Sketchbook/scrapbook containing drawings by the Princess and other artists, including sketches by William Daniell. [France and England], 1827-1851.

1827. 13 watercolours and pencil and ink drawings mounted on 60 leaves of white and brown-toned paper. Splendid red morocco binding by Alphonse Giroux of Paris with covers and spine gilt and inlaid (wanting the fore-edge lock). Small oblong folio (340 x 245 mm). Red moirée silk endpapers. All edges gilt. A magificently bound, early album containing sketches by the artistically gifted princess as well as by other artists. It was not until the year of her birth that her father Louis Philippe, the Duke of Orleans (1773-1850), who had had to leave Europe after the French Revolution and spent several years in America, returned to France, where in 1830 he accepted the crown, following the deposition of Charles X. Until the February Revolution of 1848 and his emigration to England he reigned as "King of the French". - The present album contains three unsigned portrait studies in pencil attributable to the princess, probably based on details from an old master painting (possibly a Crucifixion or Lamentation of Christ). In her youth, Clementine is known frequently to have copied details from Dürer, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Holbein, and Titian. Two of the present studies are dated "1831", when she was but fourteen years old: among the earliest of her known works, they show off her remarkably developed talent. - Among the other drawings in the album is a watercolour still life with fowl, signed "D. Pedro 1850" and inscribed, "Offert À Son Altesse Royale Madame La Duchesse de Saxe Cobourg Gotha le 3 Juin 1851", while a similar still life is signed "D. Suid [?] fecit / 20 Set. 1850". Other drawings include four pencil sketches by the English painter and engraver William Daniell (1769-1837), who had accompanied his uncle Thomas Daniell to India in 1784 and subsequently produced a wealth of highly regarded landscapes and scenes of Indian life (including work for the famous "Oriental Scenery" volume), many of which are in the Royal collections (cf. Thieme/Becker VIII, 361f.). His signed contributions are two boating scenes (1827, one entitled "Patience in a Punt"), an Indian riverside scene (1827) entitled "The Plantane tree, Bengal", and an "Indian Bull" (1830, inked and watercoloured). Another particularly finely executed watercolour shows a beach scene at Ingouville (in Normandy), dated August 1839 and signed "L. Laurent". In addition, there are three skilled but unsigned pen-and-ink sketches, apparently also by a trained artist, showing a watchman with a shouldered musket, the Falls of Clyde in Scotland ("Chute de la Clyde / Lanarke 11 Juillet 51"), and the profile study of a lady (all but the latter washed in ink). A few torn stubs show the album to have formerly comprised several additional leaves, while the faint nature-printed impressions left by plants between two leaves prove that the album was once also used to preserve botanical mementos. - The princess grew up in the Palais Royale in Paris. In 1843 she was married to Prince August of Saxe-Coburg; in 1861 she would give birth to Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg, who in 1887 accepted the crown of Bulgaria, against the wishes of the European Powers and indeed those of the house of Coburg. Having long lived under the same roof with the similarly aged Victoria of Kent, later Queen Victoria (1819-1901), Clementine maintained a lifelong correspondence with the Queen of England, and her more than 600 letters are now in the Royal Archive in Windsor. Also the Hoover Institution at Stanford University keeps material from the estate of Princess Clementine within the so-called "Czar Ferdinand I of Bulgaria papers". Her artistic productions have remained enduringly popular: in 1990, one of her pencil drawings ("Etude des chiens") sold for 20,000 Francs (Paris, Tajan, 5 Dec. 1990, lot 23).

1827. Kupferstich von Samuel Nagy nach Mikolai Tóth Istvan. 415:780 mm. 92tes Werk. Vollstandige Partitur. [Full Score]

      S. A. Steiner, Vienna - First edition of the Seventh Symphony, preceding the parts issue.  224 pages, 4to (c.24.5 x 20 cms), engraved title and dedication leaf to Moritz von Fries, lithographed music, plate no.2560, unpriced on title.  The prodigy organist William Crotch's signed copy dated August 1827. Later three-quarters morocco gilt, untrimmed. 10 1/4 x 8 inches (26.2 x 21 cm); with engraved title, dedication and pages 2-224 of lithographed music (p. 1 blank). Old dampstain to gutter causing short split to lower gutter margin and affecting first leaves, small paper replacement to lower right corner of title, p. 39, and final leaf, early London bookseller's stamp to title, spotted throughout, the binding rubbed along joints and extremities. [Hoboken 396; Fuld, p.561; Kinsky, p.259; Hirsch IV.346] This is the first appearance of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony in A major, written between 1811-12, which features an allegretto that was encored on opening night and was performed separately from the symphony on many occasions. Many were enamored of the symphony and Wagner described it as the "Apotheosis of the Dance." This copy with the interesting provenance of William Crotch, who at the time he dated the title page was Principal of the Royal Academy of Music. The modern endpaper of this copy is also signed by the organist A.H. Mann of Kingsfield, Cambridge. Rare. James Fuld's own copy, now at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, containing "at least 25 [errors] on the first page alone", is possibly a proof copy.

Catechismus Romanus: ex decreto Concilii Tridentini iussu S. Pii V editus.[Rome], Propaganda Fide, 1786 [= 1787]-1787. 2 volumes. 8vo. With an Arabic title-page on the second page of each volume. Set in 2 sizes of nashk Arabic type, with some preliminary pages set in roman and italic type. Early 19th-century half sheepskin parchment.

Schnurrer 308; WorldCat (2 copies); not in Smitskamp, Philologia orientalis. First unabridged Arabic edition of the catechism translated from the Latin version authorized by the Council of Trent and the most extensive Arabic catechism ever published, comprising 1827 pages plus preliminaries. It follows the Roman Catholic rite and was printed and published by the Propaganda Fide in Rome. It is based on the Latin text authorized by the Council of Trent under Pope Pius V, first published in Latin in 1566. While some small Arabic catechisms of a few dozen pages had been printed as early as 1580, only a few more extensive ones had appeared. The present edition is probably the most extensive Arabic work that the Propaganda Fide ever published. With 19th-century library stamps. With occasional minor and mostly marginal foxing and an occasional quire slightly browned, but otherwise in very good condition, with only an occasional tiny hole or small marginal chip. Only slightly trimmed. The most ambitious Arabic catechism produced to this date.
