        Manuscript, Langdon Lottery Society Book of Records Jan'y 24th 1826 . . . [autograph title, also includes a later cash account book and journal kept by Brooks after his move to Royalton, Vermont, ca. 1826-1851].

      Langdon, N. H., January 4, 1826 to May 29, 1827. Worn and somewhat soiled; in good condition.. Blank book, original sheep spine, blue boards, approx. 7 x 6 inches, 36 pages of lottery company records. With 117 pages (plus a few scattered entries) of additional personal cash accounts, 1838-1852. A detailed look at a cooperative effort to beat the system in state-sanctioned gambling in the America of John Quincy Adams. This manuscript compiles the original establishment papers, meeting records, membership records, and investment records for the Langdon Lottery Society, "for the purpose of raising money to purchase lottery tickets in some regular lottery." For one dollar, a member of the Society would become a shareholder in pooled investments in various lotteries; lotteries were a common means of fundraising for infrastructure and state investments in early America. Brook was elected the organization's secretary at the initial meeting and here records the Society's Constitution, lists shareholders (some 99, including women like Sally Fletcher and widow Sally Ganzy), and keeps records of the costs and specific ticket numbers (and occasional winnings paid out) invested in lotteries ranging from the 1826 Pennsylvania State lottery ($42.50 invested) and the Rhode Island Lottery ($30 invested, evidently seventeen cents in return) and the State Lottery of Maryland, as well as such enterprises as the Windsor Lottery or the Dismal Swamp Canal Lottery of June 22, 1826. (This latter lottery held to raise funds for substantial improvements to this important Virginia-North Carolina canal, a major part of John Quincy Adams's system of extensive internal improvments.) By mid-1826, the Langdon Lottery Society was organizing a scheme to allow shareholders to be bought out, and investments in later lotteries seem less substantial than earlier purchases, until the final puchases of tickets in the Brattleborough Lottery and the Grand State Lottery. Per Lovejoy, History of Royalton, Vermont (Burlington, 1911) John Brooks (13 February 1782-25 January 1852) was born in Alstead, N.H. and came to Royalton around 1836--Parmelia, his first wife died in 1834 in Langdon, and he married Abigail Clark in March, 1836--and he bought part of Wright's Mills in Royalton. Brooks uses the balance of the book for cash accounts and occasional daily journals, with money laid out for molasses, silk, oats, travel, interest paid on notes, etc. His journal records weather, occasional local news, who has left for Boston with a shipment of pork, etc. The accounts give a detailed look at a personal economy right up to the day before his death; on the last day of his life, Brooks spent $2 on hay, twelve and a half cents or sawing wood, and fifty cents to have his clock cleaned--this last perhaps the most poignant expense in the book. For more on the lottery in early America (especially the growth of its use to raise funds for the government), see John Samuel Ezell, Fortune's Merry Wheel: The Lottery in America (Harvard University Press, 1960).

        Die galvanische Kette, mathematisch bearbeitet

      - One folding engraved plate. iv, 245, [1] pp. 8vo, cont. half-cloth & marbled boards (ends of spine almost invisibly repaired), spine gilt. Berlin: T.H. Riemann, 1827. First edition of this pioneering work which contains one of the most important discoveries in electrical science - "Ohm's law" - the basis of the present system of electrical measurement. Ohm discovered the unit of resistance in an electrical current. "In the field of electrical measurement Ohm was the great pioneer.Ohm's great contribution - 'The Galvanic Chain Mathematically Calculated' - was to measure the rate of current flow and the effects of resistance on the current. 'Ohm's law' - that the resistance of a given conductor is a constant independent of the voltage applied or the current flowing - was arrived at theoretically by analogy with Fourier's heat measurements (1800-14)."-Printing & the Mind of Man 289. It is known that the publisher was forced to pulp most of the copies of this book due to lack of sales. A very fine and fresh copy with the bookplate of Alfred Schmid. ? The Duke of Sussex (1773-1843), sixth son of King George III, formed the collection from about 1815 with the assistance of the surgeon and bibliographer Thomas J. Pettigrew. Upon the Duke's death, the library was sold at auction in 1844-45; the biggest buyers being Sir Thomas Phillipps and the British Museum. The library included a Gutenberg Bible, the 1462 Bible, the 1460 Catholicon, and many important early MSS. A most handsome set of this important catalogue, printed on fine paper. Stamp on verso of titles of the Gloucestershire County Library. ? Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, cols. 585-87. De Ricci, p. 118. Fletcher, English Book Collectors, p.12-"Of the sons of George III., the Duke of Sussex alone appears to have inherited his father's love of collecting books, and he formed a magnificent library in his apartments at Kensington Palace. The collection consisted of more than fifty thousand volumes, twelve thousand of which were theological. It included a very considerable number of early Hebrew and other rare manuscripts, and about one thousand editions of the Bible. An elaborate catalogue of a portion of it, entitled Bibliotheca Sussexiana, was compiled by Dr. T.J. Pettigrew, the Duke's librarian.". [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      Numerous illus. in the text (many full-page). 30 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. patterned wrappers (rubbed & a little worn), orig. block printed title label on upper cover, new stitching. N.p. [but probably Osaka]: 1827. First edition. "The last monograph of importance on massage in old Japan was the Ampuku zukai, compiled and published by Shinsai Ota in 1827, which gave the technique of massage in text and illustrations."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books, II, pp. 485-86. This work by Ota, a physician in Osaka, serves as the foundation of modern Anpuku therapy. "Anpuku," which means to "ease or calm the abdomen," is a massage therapy which can be traced back to the Nara and Heian periods in Japan (710-1185 A.D.). It is still practiced in Japan. The illustrations depict the therapist applying pressure to various parts of the body, pressure points, a baby receiving a massage, an expectant mother receiving a massage, a self-massage, the therapist massaging the breasts of a woman to stimulate her breast milk, etc. A very nice copy.

        Leges Oscillationis oriundae si duo Corpora diversa celeritate oscillantia ita conjunguntur ut oscillare non possint nisi simul et synchronice exemplo illustratae Tuborum linguatorum. Dissertatio Physica..

      One folding engraved plate (some foxing) & seven printed tables (five in the text & two on a separate folding sheet). 2 p.l., 40 pp. Large 4to, orig. green patterned boards (some foxing). [Halle]: G. Haack, [1827]. First edition, and a very evocative association copy, of the rare Habilitationschrift by Wilhelm Weber (1804-91) on acoustics, specifically on the acoustic coupling of tongue and air cavity in reed organ pipes; his work in this area led, in a slightly roundabout way, to his close and enormously fruitful association with Gauss, which began in September of 1831. This copy belonged to Gauss - with the "Gauss-Bibliothek" stamp - on title. It is hard to imagine a more appropriate association as it led, in part, to their intimate collaboration and friendship. Weber met Gauss at a scientific conference organized by Alexander von Humboldt in Berlin in 1828 (this was the only scientific convention Gauss ever attended). Weber delivered a lecture in which he summed up his work on the acoustical qualities of organ pipes. It attracted the attention of both Humboldt and Gauss, both of whom attended the lecture. Gauss immediately recognized the young physicist as a worthy colleague in his new-found interest in geomagnetism. Weber moved to Göttingen in 1831 and in the following six years, the two scientists invented the telegraph, developed a magnetometer, and performed much important research in electricity and magnetism. Weber here describes for the first time a process in which sound is engraved on a metal plate with a scraper, and reproduced in differing frequencies by passing the scraper across the grooves - the basic principle of the gramophone record. Had this process been known to scientists during the heyday of recording-apparatus research in the 19th century, our present-day phonographs would very likely have been developed at a much earlier date; at least, Edison and Berliner would have been spared some of their abortive experiments. The plate depicts various reed organ pipes. Fine copy. With the stamp of the Royal Observatory at Göttingen on free front endpaper (with release stamp facing on the front paste-down endpaper) and title. ? Gauss: D.S.B., V, pp. 304-06. Weber: D.S.B., XIV, pp. 203-09.

First edition of this pioneering work which contains one of the most important discoveries in electrical science - "Ohm's law" - the basis of the present system of electrical measurement. Ohm discovered the unit of resistance in an electrical current. "In the field of electrical measurement Ohm was the great pioneer...Ohm's great contribution - 'The Galvanic Chain Mathematically Calculated' - was to measure the rate of current flow and the effects of resistance on the current. 'Ohm's law' - that the resistance of a given conductor is a constant independent of the voltage applied or the current flowing - was arrived at theoretically by analogy with Fourier's heat measurements (1800-14)."-Printing & the Mind of Man 289.         THE APPEAL OF L. LOUAILLIER, SEN. AGAINST THE CHARGE OF HIGH TREASON, AND EXPLAINING THE TRANSACTIONS AT NEW ORLEANS

      [New Orleans], 1827. 28pp. Stitched as issued. Spine reinforced with tissue, some splitting. Minor soiling and wear, last two leaves lightly dampstained. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt. During the War of 1812, Andrew Jackson had established martial law during his occupation of New Orleans. State senator Louis Louaillier wrote an article criticizing Jackson's military dictatorship and was arrested; subsequently Judge Dominic Hall objected to Jackson's suspension of habeas corpus and Louaillier's arrest, and Hall was also arrested for treason. Upon his release, Hall fined Jackson the immense sum of $1,000, which was later deemed by several official parties to be an outrageously large fine. This pamphlet, issued during the presidential campaign of 1828, speaks of the injustices perpetrated by Jackson against Louaillier, urging citizens to vote instead for John Quincy Adams (who lost anyway).         Bibliotheca Sussexiana. A Descriptive Catalogue, accompanied by Historical and Biographical Notices, of the Manuscripts and Printed Books contained in the Library of His Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex..

      By Thomas Joseph Pettigrew. Frontis. port., 19 plates (some in color), & some illus. in the text (several printed in red). Three parts in two vols. Large thick 4to, fine cont. blue morocco, sides panelled in gilt with gilt fleurons in each corner, spines richly gilt, dentelles gilt, a.e.g. London: Longman et al., 1827-39. An extremely fine and well-bound set, probably a large-paper set on fine paper, of this handsomely printed catalogue of this large and famous library, which was pre-eminent in the field of Bibles, MSS., and early printed books.

        The Shepherd's Calendar: With Village Stories and Other Poems

      ondon- John Taylor, 1827 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. A scarce first edition of this collection of poetry by John Clare. First edition, with a frontispiece and original publisher's advertisements to the rear. A lovely untouched copy in the original publisher's cloth with the advertisements. John Clare was an English poet, known for his representations of the English countryside and his lamentation of its destruction. Often referred to as 'the peasant poet' or 'the labouring class poet', Clare is widely regarded as one of the most important 19th century poets. He wrote in his Northamptonshire dialect and thus introduced local words into the literary canon. Though he was praised in his time for his earlier volumes, Clare's third volume of poetry, The Shepherd's Calendar, met with little success, and the struggle between his public literary life and his private country life would prove a great strain. Sadly, Clare suffered from mental health issues and was eventually admitted into a private asylum and later to Northampton General Lunatic Asylum where he died. Condition: In a quarter cloth binding with original publisher's boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and bumping. Marks to boards. Chipping to spine label. internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean with spotting to the title page and frontispiece. Overall: VERY GOOD.

        THE O'BRIENS AND THE O'FLAHERTYS;

      1827. [4 volumes in original boards] A National Tale. In Four Volumes. London: Henry Colburn, 1827. 2 pp undated Vol IV ads. Original drab paper-covered boards with printed spine labels. First Edition of this~fast-paced tale of political intrigue and aristocratic vanity -- a romp through 1793 Dublin as Ireland pitches toward the United Irishmen Uprising of 1798. It follows Murrogh O'Brien as he tries to find his way between his nostalgic father, the politically savvy Irish-Italian nun Beavoin O'Flaherty, the dashing flirt Lady Knocklofty [yes, Lady Knocklofty], the idealistic United Irishmen, and his comically old-fashioned aunts -- only to be caught up in a sweep of arrests and revelations in the novel's dramatic fourth volume. [Wright].~Sydney Owenson (1778?-1859) was born to an Irish Catholic father who was a comic actor, and an English evangelical Protestant mother who disapproved of both Irishmen and the theatre -- and was raised in Dublin. Her novels spoke for the early movement of Irish nationalism; her three best-known novels are THE WILD IRISH GIRL (1806), a paean of praise to Ireland, O'DONNEL (1814), noteworthy for its realistic description of Irish peasant life, and this one.~In contrast to her outsized personality, Lady Morgan was physically diminutive in stature (according to the plaque on her bust at Victoria & Albert Museum, she was under four feet tall!); in an 1803 letter to Alicia LeFanu she wrote "I am ambitious, far, far beyond the line of laudable emulations, perhaps beyond the power of being happy. Yet the strongest point of my ambition is to be every inch a woman" [quote per Radcliffe].~These four volumes, still in their original delicate 1827 boards-and-label binding, are remarkably in fine condition (just a bit of trifling wear at some extremities); a better copy is unlikely to be found. Sadleir XIX 1777 (citing a binding of "pink boards, glazed black paper spines, labels"); this title not in the Wolff collection; NCBEL III 754. Housed in a pair of (scuffed and worn) morocco-backed slipcases.
