        Die galvanische Kette, mathematisch bearbeitet

      One folding engraved plate. iv, 245 pp. (lacking the errata leaf & leaf of ads). 8vo, cont. grey paste-paper boards (lower joint with short split at head & foot). Berlin: T.H. Riemann, 1827. First edition, and a splendid association copy, of this pioneering work which contains one of the most important discoveries in electrical science - "Ohm's law" - the basis of the present system of electrical measurement. Ohm discovered the unit of resistance in an electrical current. This copy belonged to the "Prince of Mathematicians" - Carl Friedrich Gauss - and has the "Gauss-Bibliothek" stamp on the title. It is quite exciting to be able to link two of the greatest 19th-century scientists through an important book like this. "In the field of electrical measurement Ohm was the great pioneer…Ohm's great contribution - 'The Galvanic Chain Mathematically Calculated' - was to measure the rate of current flow and the effects of resistance on the current. 'Ohm's law' - that the resistance of a given conductor is a constant independent of the voltage applied or the current flowing - was arrived at theoretically by analogy with Fourier's heat measurements (1800-14)."-Printing & the Mind of Man 289. It is known that the publisher was forced to pulp most of the copies of this book due to lack of sales. A very fine and fresh copy. Lacking the errata leaf (it clearly was never bound-in) and, as usual, the leaf of ads. With the stamp of the Royal Observatory at Göttingen on free front endpaper (with release stamp facing on the front paste-down endpaper) and title. ? Dibner, Heralds of Science, 63. Horblit 81.         Bibliotheca Sussexiana. A Descriptive Catalogue, accompanied by Historical and Biographical Notices, of the Manuscripts and Printed Books contained in the Library of His Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex..

      By Thomas Joseph Pettigrew. Frontis. port., 19 plates (some in color), & some illus. in the text (several printed in red). Three parts in two vols. Large thick 4to, fine cont. blue morocco, sides panelled in gilt with gilt fleurons in each corner, spines richly gilt, dentelles gilt, a.e.g. London: Longman et al., 1827-39. An extremely fine and well-bound set, probably a large-paper set on fine paper, of this handsomely printed catalogue of this large and famous library, which was pre-eminent in the field of Bibles, MSS., and early printed books. The Duke of Sussex (1773-1843), sixth son of King George III, formed the collection from about 1815 with the assistance of the surgeon and bibliographer Thomas J. Pettigrew. Upon the Duke's death, the library was sold at auction in 1844-45; the biggest buyers being Sir Thomas Phillipps and the British Museum. The library included a Gutenberg Bible, the 1462 Bible, the 1460 Catholicon, and many important early MSS. A most handsome set of this important catalogue, printed on fine paper. Stamp on verso of titles of the Gloucestershire County Library. ? Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, cols. 585-87. De Ricci, p. 118. Fletcher, English Book Collectors, p.12-"Of the sons of George III., the Duke of Sussex alone appears to have inherited his father's love of collecting books, and he formed a magnificent library in his apartments at Kensington Palace. The collection consisted of more than fifty thousand volumes, twelve thousand of which were theological. It included a very considerable number of early Hebrew and other rare manuscripts, and about one thousand editions of the Bible. An elaborate catalogue of a portion of it, entitled Bibliotheca Sussexiana, was compiled by Dr. T.J. Pettigrew, the Duke's librarian.".

        The Shepherd's Calendar: With Village Stories and Other Poems

      ondon- John Taylor, 1827 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. A scarce first edition of this collection of poetry by John Clare. First edition, with a frontispiece and original publisher's advertisements to the rear. A lovely untouched copy in the original publisher's cloth with the advertisements. John Clare was an English poet, known for his representations of the English countryside and his lamentation of its destruction. Often referred to as 'the peasant poet' or 'the labouring class poet', Clare is widely regarded as one of the most important 19th century poets. He wrote in his Northamptonshire dialect and thus introduced local words into the literary canon. Though he was praised in his time for his earlier volumes, Clare's third volume of poetry, The Shepherd's Calendar, met with little success, and the struggle between his public literary life and his private country life would prove a great strain. Sadly, Clare suffered from mental health issues and was eventually admitted into a private asylum and later to Northampton General Lunatic Asylum where he died. Condition: In a quarter cloth binding with original publisher's boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and bumping. Marks to boards. Chipping to spine label. internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean with spotting to the title page and frontispiece. Overall: VERY GOOD.

        THE O'BRIENS AND THE O'FLAHERTYS;

      1827. [4 volumes in original boards] A National Tale. In Four Volumes. London: Henry Colburn, 1827. 2 pp undated Vol IV ads. Original drab paper-covered boards with printed spine labels. First Edition of this~fast-paced tale of political intrigue and aristocratic vanity -- a romp through 1793 Dublin as Ireland pitches toward the United Irishmen Uprising of 1798. It follows Murrogh O'Brien as he tries to find his way between his nostalgic father, the politically savvy Irish-Italian nun Beavoin O'Flaherty, the dashing flirt Lady Knocklofty [yes, Lady Knocklofty], the idealistic United Irishmen, and his comically old-fashioned aunts -- only to be caught up in a sweep of arrests and revelations in the novel's dramatic fourth volume. [Wright].~Sydney Owenson (1778?-1859) was born to an Irish Catholic father who was a comic actor, and an English evangelical Protestant mother who disapproved of both Irishmen and the theatre -- and was raised in Dublin. Her novels spoke for the early movement of Irish nationalism; her three best-known novels are THE WILD IRISH GIRL (1806), a paean of praise to Ireland, O'DONNEL (1814), noteworthy for its realistic description of Irish peasant life, and this one.~In contrast to her outsized personality, Lady Morgan was physically diminutive in stature (according to the plaque on her bust at Victoria & Albert Museum, she was under four feet tall!); in an 1803 letter to Alicia LeFanu she wrote "I am ambitious, far, far beyond the line of laudable emulations, perhaps beyond the power of being happy. Yet the strongest point of my ambition is to be every inch a woman" [quote per Radcliffe].~These four volumes, still in their original delicate 1827 boards-and-label binding, are remarkably in fine condition (just a bit of trifling wear at some extremities); a better copy is unlikely to be found. Sadleir XIX 1777 (citing a binding of "pink boards, glazed black paper spines, labels"); this title not in the Wolff collection; NCBEL III 754. Housed in a pair of (scuffed and worn) morocco-backed slipcases.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. Wien, 14. XI. 1827.

      1827. 1 S. und 2 Zeilen auf 1 Bl. 4to. An Franz Xaver von Peball, den Verweser des Kommunitäts-Radwerks Nr. VI in Vordernberg (Steiermark): "Das ist doch etwas ganz neues mitten in einem halben Jahre den Preis vermindern zu wollen, und ich bin froh daß die mehrheit der Stimmen dagegen war. Ich hatte darüber mit dem Vorsteher gesprochen und wir waren übereingekommen, nicht vor dem Jahreswechsel etwas zu thun, sondern wenn es die Umstände Erforderten erst nach dem neuen Jahre auf den Preis von 3 f M. M. oder höchstens auf 8 f. Papiergeld zu steigen dann aber wieder fest Jahrlang zu bleiben; mir scheint daß er ganz darauf vergessen hat - [D]ie Stimme der Gratzer Eisenhändler ist eine sehr befangene und diese könne nie unsere Richtschnur werden da ihre Geschäfte ihre frühere Bedeutenheit [!] verlohren [!] und für uns der Platz Wienn [!] weit wichtiger ist. Dieses ewige Schwanken schadet nur dem Hammer Gewerkes und dadurch den für uns nothwendigen schnelleren und wichtigeren Zahlungen. Ich verstehe nicht wie so plötzliche Entschlüße entstehen da doch die möglichen einzutrettenden Umstände von jedem der seine Rechnung führet und sich um Getreidepreise [etc.] bekümmert vorgesehen werden könne; ob nicht andere Ausgaben des Hauswesens eine plötzliche Klassensteigerung Erfordern daß will ich nicht beurtheilen. Recht gut ist es daß Sie in meinem Namen sich dieser Steigerung wiedersezten [!] [...]". - Erzherzog Johann, der 1822 das Vordernberger Radgewerk Nr. 2 erworben hatte, sollte bis zum Ende des Jahrzehnts die anderen ortsansässigen Radmeister vom Eintritt in eine "Bergunion" überzeugen, deren Gründungsvertrag heute als eigentliches Gründungsdokument der Oesterreichisch-Alpine Montangesellschaft (

        A discourse on the Poor Laws of England and Scotland, on the state of the poor of Ireland, and on emigration.

      London: James Ridgway. 1827. 8vo., vi + 127 + (1)pp., wanting the half-title, early 19th century half calf over marbled boards, neatly rebacked and lettered, with the armorial bookplate of Ferguson of Raith> on front pastedown. A very good copy. First edition: uncommon. Goldsmiths 25374. Williams II, p.236. Not in Kress. An interesting and substantial essay in the operation of the old Poor Laws. While generally the author considers the Poor Laws to be better than indiscriminate giving, he is highly critical of emigration policy as a tool in the poverty puzzle. 'Of all the hopeless schemes that have ever been suggested, of all the methods of trifling away a most urgent and important subject; none ever exceeded the attempt so often made, so often abandoned, and now revived, of relieving the distresses of a country, or the payers of poor rates, by a plan of emigration'. [p.71]. He challenges the morality of 'creating new hopes and new expectations in the people' which were likely to be unfulfilled. The author is evidently au fait with the recent thinking of others on the subject, including Malthus, Hume, Ustaritz, Newenham, Hodgskin, Adam Smith, Ricardo and McCulloch.

        Carte de l'achiplel des iles Gilbert..

      Paris: Arthus Bertrand, 1827. Fine.. Map measuring 610 x 440 mm. (sheet size). Delicately engraved chart of the Gilbert Islands in present-day Micronesia, from the official atlas of the French scientific expedition of 1822-1825 under the command of Louis-Isidor Duperrey. The Duperrey voyage is of great importance to the history of European contact with the indigenous peoples of Micronesia. It was also the first time accurate maps of the region were produced.The expedition left France in the Coquille in August 1822, and after venturing through the Pacific and stopping at New Zealand they reached the Gilbert islands in May 1824. Overall, the experience of French sailors and scientists of the Duperrey expedition in Micronesia was peaceful (so much so that two sailors chose to remain on the Chuuck islands rather than remain aboard the Coquille and return to Europe). This contact was greatly different to earlier landfalls made by the Spanish, which were characterised by violence and pillaging of the native villages.For a full description of Duperrey voyage in this region see Francis Hezel The First Taint of Civilization.         Narrative of Don Juan Van Halen's Imprisonment in the Dungeons of the Inquisition at Madrid, and His Escape in 1817 and 1818; to Which are Added His Journey to Russia, His Campaign with the Army of the Caucasus, and His Return to Madrid in 1821

      Henry Colburn, London 1827 - First edition in English. Two volumes, pp. xix, 380, with frontis portrait and two folding facsimiles; xv, 496. with frontis portrait, two folding panoramas, and folding sketch map of the Caucasus and Georgia. Contemporary marbled boards, rebacked with modern calf spine with gilt rules and red label. Edges and corners rubbed. Bindings sound, text with some foxing and offsetting. A Spaniard of Dutch heritage, Van Halen (1788-1864) entered the Spanish navy in 1803, sailing to Cuba and Mexico. In 1808 he became involved in the Peninsula Campaign, first fighting for the Spanish, then briefly joining the French after being taken prisoner, and finally returning to the Spanish side, boldly fooling the French into surrendering three forts by dressing as a French officer and presenting forged documents announcing a treaty. He received a promotion for this coup, but in 1817 fell victim to the Inquisition and was (according to his own account) imprisoned and tortured. Escaping to Russia, he spent 18 months as a colonel in the Caucasus Dragoon Regiment under General Yermalov in Tblisi, Georgia. Despite some likely fictional elements, this account of his adventures is generally regarded as based in truth. British traveler and scholar John Frederick Baddeley describes it as "one of the best of the early books of travel and adventure in the Caucasus" (Russian Conquest of the Caucasus, p. 123).         Autograph letter draft. No place, 30. XII. 1827.

      1827. 4to. 20 pp. on sewn double leaves. To Philip Henry, 4th Earl Stanhope (1781-1855, later custodian of Kaspar Hauser), discussing the political situation in Europe after the Battle of Navarino, which led to Greek independence from Ottoman rule. Gentz, no disciple of Philhellenism, anticipates the importance of the Battle's outcome for the European balance of powers and deplores the roles played by the political forces of the Great Powers. Gentz writes to the Earl, whose enthusiasm for all things German irritated his English countrymen, in German, penning only a draft and leaving the fair copy to his secretary, as he assumes his own handwriting might pose a problem to the unaccustomed reader: "[...] Ich laße diesen Brief durch eine fremde, aber vollkommen sichre Hand schreiben, weil ich einmal weiß, daß deutsche Briefe Ihnen die liebsten sind, und doch besorge, daß Sie meine Hand mit etwas mehr Anstrengung als eine Kanzley-Schrift lesen möchten [...] Sie kehren, Mein Verehrter Lord, in einem höchst entscheidenden Augenblicke in Ihr Vaterland zurück. Nach allem, was sich in den letzten vier oder sechs Wochen in England zugetragen hat, scheint mir eine Ministerial-Revoluzion unvermeidlich. Die öffentliche Meynung spricht sich täglich stärker und drohender über das Attentat von Navarin, den Traktat von London, und die ganze verderbliche Politik, die diesen Traktat erzeugt hat, aus [...] Das alles hat in den letzten vier Wochen eine andre Gestalt angenommen. Ihre Minister hatten sich geschmeichelt, daß Oesterreich durch seinen Einfluß in Constantinopel die Türken zum Nachgeben bewegen, und daß ihnen dies einen Ausgang aus dem Labyrinth, in welches sie sich durch ein grundfalsches und verderbliches System verwickelt hatten, bereiten würde. Diese Aussicht schlug fehl. Obgleich unser Cabinet, mit altgewohnter Treue und Ehrlichkeit alle seine Kräfte anstrengte, um den letzten Bruch zu hintertreiben, so war doch, seit der Katastrophe von Navarin, und bey dem fortdauernden höchst unklugen und feindlichen Benehmen der drey Gesandten, nach dieser Katastrophe, jeder Versuch bey der Pforte fruchtlos. [...] Die französische Regierung ist die verachtetste, und die verächtlichste die es heute in Europa giebt. Hierüber sind alle Parteyen einig. Wie diese im Todeskampf begriffne, elende Regierung die Türkisch-Griechische Sache behandelt hat - wird man dereinst den Geschichtsschreibern kaum glauben [...] Für Rußland allein haben England und Frankreich gearbeitet, für Rußland allein den unseligen Tripel-Traktat unterzeichnet, für Rußland allein bey Navarin die Türkische Seemacht vertilgt [...] Der Weg nach der Hauptstadt des Türkischen Reiches ist jetzt dem Russen auf allen Seiten geöfnet [...] Und das alles setzt England für das lächerlichste aller Hirngespinste, für die sogenannte Befreyung der unwürdigsten Rebellen, die je die Sonne beschienen hat, aufs Spiel! It cannot be [...]". - An extensive letter draft with numerous autograph insertions, deletions, and changes. Later publication note by a different hand (c. 1870) at the top of f. 1r; a quote which Gentz omitted from the letter (obviously intending his secretary to supply the text) bears the later editor's pencil note: "Die Stelle fehlt". - Highly characteristic document of Gentz's judgment of the European situation at the moment of the birth of modern Greece: one of the most talented statesmen of his time proves great skill in appraising the political results for the Great Powers; at the same time, the letter gives evidence that a visionary evaluation of the Greek cause, so highly regarded by many contemporaries, was beyond Gentz's capacity or inclination. Printed in normalised orthography in: Schlesier, Gustav v. (ed.). Schriften von Friedrich von Gentz. Ein Denkmal. Vol. V (1840), p. 138-146.
